Review: Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai served up his self titled debut in 1972 and many of the tunes will be familiar with people who have dance to a set by the likes of Floating Points in recent times. Before this record, Verocai had been producing for musicians such as Elis Regina, Jorge Ben, and Ivan Lins. Though the record wasn't a huge success the time, over the years it has grown to become a hugely appreciated work of folk, Latin, jazz and funk, with Arthur's smooth vocals soaring above mellifluous grooves. Original copies are hugely sought after, so snap this up while you can.

Kilario (2:51)
Pernalonga (2:46)
Review: The latest essential missive in Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45 series offers up two gems from the 1975 debut album from singer, poet and painter Di Melo (real name Roberto De Melo Santos). Given that the album is both relatively hard to find and really rather good, the Brighton-based imprint has once again pulled off a blinder. A-side 'Kilario' is a jaunty, MPB-era chunk of bass-heavy samba-funk with a rhythmic swing reminiscent of ska and some seriously tasty lead vocals from De Melo. 'Pernalonga' continues on the MPB-with-a-twist theme, delivering another hugely sunny Brazilian sing-along rich in weighty bass, shuffling funk drums and jangling acoustic guitars.

Review: Rewind to 1975, Brazilian supergroup Azymuth hit their richest creative vein with this self-titled full-length. Just as the band remain so themselves, this is still hugely relevant and ridiculously on-point considering it's 40 years on the clock. Proof can be found on every track from the sedative harmonic charms of the opener "Linha Do Horizonte", the raw slap bass funk, velvet keys and soaring synths on "Seems Like This" and the frenetic, almost techy mentality of "Wait For My Turn". An essential addition to any collection, this would have blown minds to pieces back in 1975.

Review: From an early appearance on G.A.M.M. to more recently gracing Soul Clap Records, Afrobeat-inspired outfit Sol Power All-Stars have a warm, uplifting sound which is true to their name. Now they land on Rocksteady Disco with an EP that will leap out of your speakers and get you dancing before the first bar is up. Featuring contributions from players and signers such as Amma Whatt, Frank Martins, Scott Baylis, Max Grunhard and Besufekad Tadesse, the troupe romp their way through jubilant, big-band tracks, with a little club nous edged into the B side versions for those wanting to get busy in the mix.

Review: With this new 12", Ten Lovers Music introduce a Latin American Series that will deal in lush South American sounds from across the genre range. They kick it off by putting two artists in the spotlight, with first up from Mexico, a super talent in the form of the Stretto band, who serve up a trio of sunny, happy Latin-jazz tunes to make you groove. Then on the flip, from Sao Paulo in Brazil, multi keyboard instrumentalist Erik Escobar steps up with a trio of deeper broken beat jams with some exceptional key work defining each one.

Review: Mali's musical culture has thus far not been celebrated in the same way as, say, Nigerian, Ghanaian or Ethiopian music, but as this excellent collection from Mr Bongo proves, the country has produced just as many cross-cultural classics as any other African nation. The 13 tracks stretched out across this double, blue vinyl LP provide a vibrant and colourful snapshot of Malian sounds of the sixties, seventies and eighties, flitting between organ-heavy psych-funk (Idrissa Soumaoro et L'eclipse De L'ija's 'Nissodia', bustling Afro-funk ('Mouodilo' by Rail Band), bluesy riffs on tropical dance styles (Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako's 'M'bouram-mousso', Sorry Bamba's glistening and attractive 'Yayaroba') and, as the set unfolds, synth and drum machine-powered 1980s classics (Zani Diabate Et Le Super Djata Band's 'Fadingna Kouma'). In a word: superb.

Unite Africaine (18:36)
Mede Ma Gnin Messe (15:56)
Review: Orchestre Poly Rythmo De Cotonou continue to pick up new fans as reissues of their crucial old records continues apace. Unite Africaine is next in the spotlight thanks to this work from Acid Jazz, and was first recorded in 1977. It actually features two epic full-side tracks from a pair of late 70s Orchestre Poly-Rythmo albums that were written when the band was at the peak of its powers. Infectious Afro-Latin vibes, master trumpeting, interwoven rhythms and big horn stabs make the record bristling with vitality and rhythm for the full duration. Copies of the OG albums with these tunes on are hard to find so don't sleep on this one.

Review: The Gulf of Tadjoura is a basin of the Indian Ocean in the Horn of Africa, south of the entrance to the Red Sea. It's an area rich in natural flora and fauna, with a bustling and lively music scene to match, as proven by this new compilation on Ostinato's Djibouti Archives series. It all features a 40 person Somali ensemble of dancers, actor, musicians, percussionists and singers called 4 Mars (named after the founding date of The People's Rally for Progress in 1997. The group served as house band for that collective and here show their sound is full of soulful and sassy grooves that tend to go slow but build you up big. Elements of African, Asia and Mediterranean culture all permeate the tracks, some of which are studio recordings, other live performances.

Review: Selected from thousands of singles, World Circuit brings together the greatest recordings from Colombia's legendary record label Discos Fuentes, recorded between 1950 - 1988 on Cumbia Cumbia 1 & 2 . The label was founded in Cartagena in 1934 by Antonio Lopez Fuentes and was long considered the most important in the country, becoming a significant outlet for Colombian music, and responsible for thousands of hits over six decades. Fuentes hand-picked musicians and singers to perform on his immaculate productions, which were all recorded in-house. Existing since the 17th century, Cumbia is the music and dance synonymous with Colombia.

Review: This is a glorious example of the highlife sound with some extra digital funky touches that really make it pop. The Ghanian producer Frimpong Manso is the man who made it so when it was recorded back in 1987 at the Ghana Films Studio in Accra. The title Boafo Ne Nyame can be translated as "Helper is god" and the super sweet voice of K. Adusei is the lead vocalist who helps lodge these tunes deep in your soul. Each of the five tracks goes long and is filled with hypnotic hi-life grooves, deeply funky guitar licks that bring plenty to each tune, and tight drumming that oils the whole affair nicely.

Review: Two years ago, Ostinato Records was granted access to the bulging archives of Radiodiffusion-Television de Djibouti (RTD) in order to compile a series of releases showcasing the best of East African music of the last 50 years. This fine compilation showcases some of the results of the label's tireless digging. It focuses on music recorded by 4 Mars, a 40-piece Somalian supergroup which was initially established by a political party. Musically it's an astonishing melting pot of sounds and styles, with Somalian vocals rising above fuzzy 1970s synthesizers, funk guitars, North and East African rhythms, jazz and soul horns, surprise Asian instrumentation and, intriguingly, nods towards Jamaican reggae. The result is a range of vibrant, Kaleidoscopic cuts that genuinely sound like nothing else around.
