Te Conoci/Pia/Alejandro/Oooophi (26:24)
Descanse/ADMSDP/Juntos/Mmmm (feat LA Warman) (22:10)
Review: DJ Python's hypnotic take on dembow is second to none. The New York DJ and producer can send you wild with the slowest of tempos and does that again here on his second superb album on Incienso. His tactile drum programming weaves and wanders beneath the most bendy and gooey of synth lines. The tension between those percolating drums and the star gazing keys and pads up top is what makes his music so enthralling - life is slowed to a crawl and everything seems to take on more beauty and resonance as a result. Tracks here are variously coloured with eerie vocal samples, field recordings or deconstructed jungle percussion, and every single one snakes its way into your mind, body and soul. "Mas Amable" may just be one of the albums of the year.

Review: In many ways, the debut solo album from Ed O'Brien could have sounded like anything - the Radiohead guitarist has been involved in plenty of sonic experimentations with that outfit, while comrade in arms Thom Yorke has managed to triumph both on the indie rock and electronic club music circuits, elements that could easily have found their way onto this record. The truth is 'Earth' doesn't really sound like Radiohead, or most contemporary electronic permutations. You could almost argue there is an air of nostalgia running through the release, certainly 'Shangri-La' feels that way, shades of Madchester and the great indie-dance crossover days are more than audible. From there we have lo-fi pop edginess ('Banksters'), the sweet and innocent acoustic job 'Long Time Coming', and the breathy, loose, broken and floaty 'Olympik'. In short, it grooves, grows, ebbs and flows in a way that shows a true master at work.

Review: Turin techno stalwart Andrea has been serving up slabs of goodness on Ilian Tape since way back in 2012, though "Ritorno" is remarkably his very first full-length excursion. The 12 track set is far more varied than his fine club-focused singles, with the Italian variously turning his hand to swelling, Global Communication style ambient techno ("Attimo"), ultra-deep breakbeat dreaminess ("SKLYN"), melodious, jungle-influenced IDM ("LS September"), bassbin rattlers ("TrackQY", the skittish brilliance of moody roller "Reinf"), dreamy soundscape techno ("LG_Amb"), angular fusions of bass music and dark Italo-techno ("Drumzzy") and picturesque ambient dub slow jams ("Twin Forests").

Review: Fresh from tidy 2019 EPs on Sector 7 Sounds and System Music, Drone returns to the latter label with his first missive of 2020. There's plenty of highlights stretched across the EP's two slabs of wax, with our favourites including the creepy mix of deep dubstep rhythms and Autechre style melodies that is "20 K", the slow-burn headiness of "Flooded" - where picturesque watery melodies ride a skeletal beat and vibrating sub-bass - and the aggressive late night dancefloor paranoia of "Fear". SP:MC provides a tasty rework of that cut, focusing the action on a crunchier rhythm track and pulverising waves of distorted analogue bass.

Review: With tracks from the likes of Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Carly Simon, John Lennon and Rod Stewart featuring on this ode to the great musical decade that was the 1970s, clearly the partnership of alternative rocker Matthew Sweet and The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs doesn't lack ambition. Re-imagining significant work from equally significant artists in a way that's unique to the pair was never going to be easy, but they've pulled it off. Highlights include an epic version of Mott The Hoople's 'Some Young Dudes', a loud and riff heavy take on 'I've Seen All Good People' by Yes, and a seductive, pared back interpretation of Queen's wonderfully camp 'Killer Queen'. The combination of Sweet's guitar prowess and experimental instrumentation with Hoffs' country-leaning vocal delivery adding a surreal, New Wave movie score edge to proceedings.

Review: The hotly anticipated debut album from Minor Science is finally here. After a run of acclaimed singles on Whities, the Berlin-based producer has built on his supple, shape-shifting sound to present a kaleidoscopic long-player that reveals a well-read musical mind with the imagination and studio chops to weave a broad tapestry of sounds into one constantly engaging, dynamic whole. "Second Language" spans a lot of ground from delicate ambient electronica to Autonomic drum & bass, stopping at Gqom, rave, micro house, dubstep and plenty more along the way, but crucially all these motifs are given a thorough treatment until everything sparkles with originality. It's also a boisterous and fidgety record, especially on the playful chops, edits and fills of "Blue Deal". You won't hear another record quite like it this year, and yet it will go down with a strangely familiar ease. Hats off to Minor Science, firmly delivering on the promise of his early 12"s.

Review: DJ Amir has long been a fan of "The Jupiter Effect", the sole album by multi-instrumentalist Larry Rose and his backing band of Dutch and American session musicians, and it was on his suggestion that BBE put together this fully re-mastered reissue. The album was first released in 1978 - the year it was recorded in an Amsterdam studio - and offers a unique take on jazz-fusion that variously doffs a cap to smooth grooves, jazz-funk, Steely Dan, blues, Latin and Cajun rhythms and the hard-to-pigeonhole soul sound of Rotary Connection. It's a warm, attractive and hugely enjoyable collection of songs that have aged remarkably well, making this edition one of the reissues of the year so far.

Review: As you'd expect, Aleksi Perala has made the most of his self-developed, 128-note "colundi tonal scale" on "Oscillation 1", the first of a two-part album release on Clone's Basement Series. Perala's blueprint is relatively simple - think inventive, interesting electronic rhythms rooted in techno and electro, overlaid with ear-pleasing melodies, colourful aural textures and emotive chords - but the results are anything but standard. The album's six tracks are largely dancefloor focused, but the emphasis on melody - a nod towards vintage '90s IDM and classic electronica - means that they make for gorgeous, life-affirming home listening too. It would be a little churlish to call it an 'instant classic', but "Oscillations 1" is certainly superb - particularly the fifth track, which sounds like a tooled-up take on Orbital's "Attached" with added bass-weight.

Hazy House Vol 1 (5:53)
Hazy House Vol 2 (5:35)
Review: Church and All My Thoughts founder Seb Wildblood has been in great form of late, with last year's atmospheric and sun-kissed "Sketches Of Transition" album being particularly inspired. Here he returns to club-focused EP action in fine style with two slabs of "Hazy House". The A-side "Hazy House Vol 1" is warm, dreamy and alluring, with Wildblood wrapping rising and falling melodies, sustained chords and sunrise-ready electronic flourishes around a swinging house groove. Flipside "Hazy House Vol 2" is a more robust and forthright affair. While it utilizes some dreamy chords, the track's allure comes from the producer's deep sub-bass, jacking beats and some especially spacey electronic noises.

Review: Since Seahawks have traditionally made vivid, atmospheric and picturesque music capable of taking you to vibrant imaginary worlds, we're not that surprised to find that their latest album, "Island Visions", was recorded as a tribute to the legendary library music label KPM. As a result, it's a varied affair, with their usual blissful Balearic soundscapes - all humid tropical sound effects, glistening slow guitars and psychedelic grooves - being bolstered by extra glassy-eyed rhythms, jazzy musical flourishes (flutes etc), tribal style drum work and fretless bass courtesy of guest musician Sven Atherton (whose killer cut "The Cove" operates within similar sonic territory). The whole thing makes for superb, sun-kissed listening of the type that can brighten up even the most miserable of days.

Do It To The Music (vocal) (6:32)
Do It To The Music (dub mix) (5:06)
Review: West End Records is arguably more celebrated for its disco output, though to our ears the legendary NYC imprint put out better records during the boogie-era of the early 1980s. There are few better boogie jams in the label's catalogue than "Do It To The Music", the 1982 debut from Ron Dean Miller and Bert Reid's trio Raw Silk. If you've yet to get a copy, bag one of these reissue 12s ASAP. Like the original 1982 12", it features the sublime electrofunk original on the A-side - think sweet music, warm grooves, colourful synthesizer lines and jaunty sax lines - and the arguably even better Dub Mix on the flip. You can imagine Larry Levan going crazy for the dub the first time he heard it, and there's no greater praise than that.

Donato Dozzy - "Aquatica" (5:46)
Eric Cloutier - "Ekpyrosis" (6:24)
Review: Eric Cloutier has decided to launch a new offshoot to his consistently impressive Palinoia label. The basic idea seems to be limited edition EPs featuring tried-and-tested club cuts from like-minded machine abusers. To begin this sub-label debut in style, he offers up a killer cut from pal Donato Dozzy that's as hypnotic and mind-altering as you'd expect. Built around a rock solid kick-drum pattern, hissing cymbals and a deep bassline, "Aquatica" is sparse, unearthly and intoxicating, with trippy noises, metallic electronics and watery sounds bubbling across the sound space. Cloutier takes over on side B with "Ekpyrosis", a thrusting, muscular mixture of locked-in grooves, faintly foreboding psychedelic acid motifs and the kind of swelling chords that make your synapses snap.

Blank Cheque (6:18)
Flats (4:43)
Lemon Sunrise (4:50)
Plutonium (4:03)
Review: Bologna crew Alley Version return with a new 12", this time welcoming Richard Smith in his scintillating L/F/D/M guise. Smith has more than proven himself as a techno outlier par excellence, and so it continues on this gnarled and knotted batch of tracks. For all the lo-fi crunch, there's vitality and verve spilling out of all these tracks, especially the artfully messy "Flats". "Lemon Sunrise" is more decidedly unhinged, and "Plutonium" takes a slow and suffocating glide through freaky soundscapes teetering between the netherworld and the sunkissed boulevard. For DJs looking for the most club impact, "Blank Cheque" is the one though - a dishevelled banger for disjointed souls.
