Review: For deep house diggers, Soichi Terada has long been a source of inspiration. While he's still active, it's the early '90s material he released on the Far East Recordings label - an imprint he founded soon after his graduation in 1990 - that most excites. Following the 2014 re-release of his sublime hook-up with Nami Shimada, "Sunshower", Rush Hour has decided to put together this excellent retrospective. Compiled by self-confessed fan Hunee, Sounds From The Far East contains a mixture of hard-to-find Terada originals, collaborations, and tracks by fellow Far East Recordings artist Shinichiro Yokota, all in the label's trademark melody-rich, evocative deep house style.

Patrice Scott - "Journey To The Unknown"
Keith Worthy - "Cyclops"
Luke Hess - "Tolox"
Kai Alce - "Rockin K-Tel"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: For those turned on by the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired sounds of Detroit deep house and techno, this EP from Michael Zucker's Finale Underground imprint (an offshoot of his Finale Sessions label) should be an essential purchase. With the likes of Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy and Luke Hess involved, you'd expect the quality threshold to be high. It is, of course, resulting in a quartet of killer tracks. Hess' hypnotic techno jam "Tolox" is a definite highlight, though it pales in comparison to the analogue futurism of Keith Worthy's brilliant "Cyclops". Best of all, though, is Scott's "Journey Into The Unknown", which bobs, weaves, bubbles and spits to the rush-inducing deep house sound of undulating synthesizer melodies and classic, Transmat-style Motor City rhythms.

Review: Rawax drop another stunner of a reissue and it's by none other than Uwe Schmidt aka Atom Heart! The Milagro EP was originally released in 1994 on Our Choice as a CD and on London's Rough Trade as a 12". However, the German imprint has done us the favour of saving a L100 price tag on the black market, and have even remastered the tracks from the original tapes. Gorgeous, deep house swelters from start to finish, each track sounding as fresh today as it did over twenty years ago in a sweaty basement club. We're particularly fond of "Opcaity" and its cavernous bassline - a truly cutting-edge affair!

Review: Its early days for M5K, and equally Voyager Recordings is slowly emerging with a particular style, but already the future looks rosy for both artist and label on the strength of this synth soaked release. "Sassy Typhoon" comes on like Space Dimension Controller, before "Marcy Ave Parlay" and "Ford Capri" ramp up the Moog basslines and let the 80s electro funk shine through in a classy house framework. IMYRMIND drops a bugging remix of "Ford Capri" for all the wonky beat heads out there, and then M5K rounds the EP with the peppy strut of "No Time For Sheisty Types" and the low-slung breeze of "Rockaway Beach".

Review: Abstract Cuts is the first EP of a series produced by the French Dj & Producer Tomska. For this new project, Tomska explores raw and abstract sounds. Dirty kicks and phat basslines with dark synths on the A side, and a deep experimental track with a nice drum kick on the flip side. Since his debut on Vibes And Pepper Records, Tomska has been gaining steady growing attention by Underground House Music lovers and DJ's.

Kangaroo Ground
Ferntree Gully
Review: Over his last few releases, Australian producer Tornado Wallace has crafted a trademark sound that blends colourful, kaleidoscopic melodies with dreamy chords and an almost Balearic sense of glassy-eyed release. Interestingly, these aural trademarks are played down a little on this follow-up to his 2013 Beats In Space debut. Sure, they can be heard in the picturesque, luscious beauty of flipside "Ferntree Gully", but the title track is an altogether rougher concoction. "Kangaroo Ground" sees the Melbourne man successfully try his hand at acid house, layering twisted 303 lines and occasional cosmic chords over a clanking drum machine rhythm. It's a surprise, but a very impressive one.

Review: Well, what can we say apart form the fact that we'd been waiting on this one for quite some time? Mister Saturday night casual and The Trilogy Tapes member Anthony Naples drops his debut LP on Four Tet's Text imprint, and if you weren't expecting that at first, well, neither were we when we heard about it! Moving away from his usual style of jerky, lo-fi house, Body Pill spews a significant air of ambient and the totally abstract. While we were expecting a straighter dancefloor kinda joint, Naples has gone for something a little more wide-eyed. Tracks like "Ris", "Changes" and "Pale" are totally beatless and the New York kid manages to create playful groove out literally out of thin air. It's not all soundscapes and, however, and cuts such as "Refugio" or "Miles" boast some of the dude's most complex club arrangements to date. An interesting and enthralling debut LP, that's for damn sure.

Demuja - "Everytime"
The Knight Cats - "We Know That"
TIJN - "Dis You"
Jekyll - "Transition Dub"
Review: Launched last summer, the 124Black series has been a fine addition to the more established 124Recordings label that promotes a darker, harder sound whilst remaining firmly rooted in the underground. A third release on the series retains the focus on new and upcoming producers with Demuja, The Knight Cats, Tijn, and Jekyll all present. Building on the raw and crisp style of house shown on numerous digi releases, Demuja sets the tone perfectly with the stripped back throbbing delight that is "Everytime", whilst Paris duo The Knight Cats add some '90s flavour with the excellent "We Know That". Tijn arrives on 124Black after impressing with a recent outing on Djebali and "Diss You" is a fine B side burner along with Jekyll's rattling 'Transition Dub'.

MIST
Twilight
Crush
Review: After wowing the deep house heads with his double pack debut on Wild Oats last year, this 7" curio from K15 for the Detroit label's new sister operation No Room For Air brings some wholly different sounds to bear. "Mist" keeps things strictly melancholy with moody keys draping themselves over a most gentle of downtempo beats in a style that would gel perfectly with Floating Points' most mellow moments. "Twilight" goes even further out with a beautiful ambient excursion, but the real star of the show is the ethereal remix of Zhane's "Crush", adding a haunting emotional dimension to the '90s RnB classic that will melt every heart in a ten block radius. A real talent this one!

Time To Go
Origin (Stwrd deepdubz)
Review: With labels like Local Talk and Qalomota in his repertoire, it's clear from the off that DJ Steaw is a man keeping the fire burning for deep, 90s rooted garage house. Always a regular fixture on Rutilance Recordings, he's back on the label once more with his classic sound, but its not all New Jersey swing and nothing else. As well as lead track "Static" sporting an instantly recognisable bounce and swagger, there's more techy fare to be enjoyed on "Deepstep" with its snaking Detroit drum patterns and heavy chord washes, before "Time To Go" nudges back to a more shuffly kind of house groove. The "Stwrd Deepdubz" version of "Origins" meanwhile brings that adventurous rhythm programming back to the fore with an uptempo yet soulful approach that balances out the laid back house styles perfectly.

BitterSuite - "Familiar Currents" (part 2)
Review: Having established DeepSystems as a radio show some years back, Matt Pond (one third of the BitterSuite collective) has decided to launch a record label under the same name. Given his contacts, it's a smart move. Two close pals - BitterSuite member Jon Gray and Dan '1Dan' Rodgers - join forces as Tales Ov Rossi, laying down a slowly shifting chunk of deep, heads-down house that stretches across one side of the 12". On the flip, Gray goes solo under the BitterSuite banner, delivering the two-part "Familiar Currents". Both versions sound heavily inspired by the dense percussion, expansive musicality and rich soundscapes of Ron Trent.

Alongside the heartbreaking melancholy of 'I Keep Doing This' and 'Waterlily' and their yearning melodies, Arnaldo takes us to the nearest sweatbox with the funk flecked deepness of the brilliantly titled 'Communal Disco Lung'. An essential release for any house heads with a sophisticated palate.

Shorthand
Review: Established back in 2010, the Sudden Drop sub label from Fear Of Flying tends to choose it's output wisely with just over ten releases in this period coming from a respected cast of producers like Iron Curtis, Bleak, Roger Gerressen, and Leif. We can add to this list Ethyl & Flori, a long standing production partnership that has always stood for quality, whose 3 track Transcripts 12" shows the pair at their most diverse. "White Lotus Rebellion" is characterised by playful drums and fluttering, bird like sonics atop a Chicago indebted groove whilst "Sidestep" lives up to it's name as the pair veer off into abstract broken UK house territory. B side hogger "Shorthand" is heads down techno at it's finest.

Run Out Jam
Review: With a title like Dutty Grooves, you'd expect the resultant EP to be packed with the kind of sweaty, raw and, well, dirty material that makes you want to dance on tables in various states of undress. Predictably, that's exactly what John Swing provides on this excellent EP for the Relative label he co-runs with sometime studio pal EMG. While there is a deeper, loopier track included (closer "Run Out Jam"), it's the surging, balls-out material that really hits the spot. Top of the class is probably the bumpin' basement jam "I'm Here", though the throbbing dirty disco-house cut-up "Build It Up" is similarly big.

Tunnel Down (Brassica remix)
Review: Rothmans are back with their 3rd release of 2014 and back in the squad is Brooklyn beat master Aimes. You might remember his substitiute appereance on Rothmans 2 alongside Fairplay & Strunz. The release plays homage to informous French defender Marius Tresor who hard nosed defending earned him a place in Pele's top 100 players of all time. He also made waves off the field with a brief singing carear but we will leave you to research that yourself!!. Back to the release and we find Aimes following on from where Ste Spandex left off with an up tempo trancy, acid belter 'Tunnel Down' . Tracks 2 lowers the tempo a little and feels a little more classic Rothmans with that Nu-Disco/Italo feel too it , a sound that served them so well through Roth 3 - 5. The remix comes in on the B side from the legendary Brassica , and he doesent pull any punches at all, the remix takes all the aspects of the origianl and weaves them into an 8min piece of original music that just keeps on giving! One of the remixes of the year from the London based wizard. Again Rothmans pull it out fo the bag in the last minute and deliver andother stella EP

TV (feat Jacob Phono)
Review: The long running One Records overseen by Adam Shelton and Subb-An returns with it's 32nd release and first of the year; more importantly Warp is the first full EP for the label from Mr. Ashique Subhan! With a style very much cultivated across releases on Spectral, Crosstown Rebels, Visionquest, Cocoon, a new record from Subb-An will always be greeted with anticipation. Lead track "Warp" is a typically classy slice of effervescent house music, funnelling deep and dubby textures underneath a strident bassline and crisp, intricate drum programming. Complementing this, "TV" is an equally charming production who's worming bass surges work well against the vocal contribution from Jacob Phono.

Review: To say this second album from Linkwood has been a long time coming is to present yourself as a candidate for Understatement of the Year. A follow up to Nick Moore's fine 2009 debut System has been regularly alluded to by Firecracker boss Lindsay Todd within the context of the label's other releases. It wasn't until an unreleased Linkwood track appeared in Prosumer's fine fabric mix last year that the notion of a new Linkwood album began to take on a semblance of reality. We still can't quite believe it's happened, despite the rather dashing copies of Expression sitting pretty in the Juno warehouse. The triple vinyl set holds a weighty 12 cuts from Linkwood and is a real sumptuous listen, taking in new age ambient vignettes, bass heavy beat down, deep house workouts and plenty more.

Review: London's irrepressible Lobster Theremin are evidently developing something of a class crush on Hungarian producer Route 8, with This Raw Feeling his third release for the label. As you'd expect from the title , the four tracks here will quench anyone with a thirst for some raw house music and undercooked pseudo techno. Sounds range from the dreamy patters of "Sunrise In Her Eyes", to the distinctly distorted poundings of "This Raw Feeling", the broken patters featuring on "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" and even the glitchy, off-kilter percussive charm of "Ash Dub". Strong stuff from the Lobster camp!

Groove On (Point G remix)
Review: On his first outing for Music Is Love, French producer Mr KS invites us to Take A Trip through his Chicago house influences. There's a rolling warmth and Chez Damier-ish bounce to the lead cut, with spoken word vocals and a superb bassline riding a Swag style rhythm. "Groove On" treads a similar path, sounding like a contemporary tribute to early '90s Windy City deep house. Both tracks get the remix treatment, with Oli Furness providing a hypnotic, dub techno minded rework of "Take A Trip". Arguably even better is the Point G version of "Groove On", which turns the melodious original into a raw chunk of darkroom funk complete with subdued acid lines and clandestine chords.

Overstappen
Review: On the back of 2 well received releases on Dirt Crew & Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings, Dutch native Nachtbraker drops a beauty on Hudd Traxx. Zachtjes kicks things off in fine melodical style with live drums, lush keys and a smooth sax lick for good measure. Borrowed Identity mixes things up on the remix tip with a more upbeat dubby tool which is likley to find it's way into the hands of DJ's like Derrick Carter & Prosumer. The title track 'You Is What You Aint' is a moody groover with slick keys and sleezy beats perfect for warm ups or end of the night vibes. Nachtbraker rounds off the EP nicely with Overstappen last, but by no means least. Skippy beats and a killer bassline ensure that this EP is another 'must have' for the Hudd faithful as they near 50 releases and 10 Years in the business.

Review: Cuthead's most recent release, 2014 album Total Sellout, portrayed him as a producer equally at home making swinging, off-kilter experimental hip-hop instrumentals as sample-heavy, soul-flecked deep house. It's these contrasting but complimentary styles that are once again explored on Presets Of Your Mind, a thrillingly warm and woozy mini-album for French imprint Sampling As An Art. While there's much to admire about the gentle dancefloor deepness of "From The Basket To The Casket" and "Bring Back The Snares", the standout house tracks here are undoubtedly "Presets of Your Mind" (built around a killer disco rhythm) and the shimmering electronics of "Dubchords". Best of all, though, are the head-nodding interludes, with the Fly-Lo style "Badly" standing out.

Review: Brighton's ever-cultured Black Key label pushes on with another house connoisseur for its next release, namely the venerated Scotland-based deep house producer Brad Peterson. Opening up the EP is "Monsoon" a nice and propulsive house jam that journeys through deep space with infectious drum hits and radiant synths fleshing out the rubbery groove. "Sit Back" is a more reflective and sombre cut, with wallowing, liquid chords draped over a ponderous, snaking bassline. The classy, cultured work continues on closer "Cloud Remedy" with its reverb coated hits, decisive drums and carefully spraying, ever shifting synth patterns. Classic but not overly reverential of the past, it's a beautifully musical bit of deep house with gently tumbling, starry night sky melodies to die for.
