Review: Derek Carr's reputation as a treasured force in UK deep techno is well established now, at least compared to before his mammoth reissue campaign with For Those That Knoe began. Label and artist deliver once again, this time with a mammoth quadruple pack vinyl that gathers together some of the best digital-only releases Carr has put out. This package is incredible value for money, positively overflowing with thoughtfully rendered sci-fi soul that will keep you returning to make new discoveries for years to come. Whether it's the aqueous funk of "Angels" or the airy electro of "25th," every one of these 17 tracks is gold.

Inner Rhythm (Higher World mix) (8:11)

X-Out (8:06)
Sitting In A Tree (Time Flies) (6:21)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: It's been a while since we saw a decent reissue of material relating to Psychick Warriors Of Gaia, and no doubt there's plenty of great material to mine out there. Thankfully Platform 23 are on hand and turning their attention to Robbert Heynen's work as Exquisite Corpse, which peaked in the early to mid-'90s. Drawing on a range of EPs from that time, Between Rhythms I is loaded with heady, psychedelic fare hovering in a liminal zone between primal techno, proto trance and something more mystical altogether. "Inner Rhythm (Higher World Mix)" is a prime candidate for wigged-out dance moves and eyes-closed reveries, while "Kupuri" takes things slower and deeper. "X-Out" is a minimalist, rugged, acid-flecked beast, and "Sitting In A Tree (Time Flies)" presents the kind of off-kilter techno you might expect to hear from Terrence Dixon.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Niles Cooper had a very productive past year, and he strides into 2019 with some of his most refined productions to date. Melbourne label Kyoku is the latest outpost to carry his funky wares, and "The Juuc Miks EP" leads in with the sumptuous delights of "Strygere & Klaver," which then gets swiftly remixed into a peppy deep house jam by Joe Corti. On the B side Cooper starts flexing with some heavy samples to create a deadly heads down jam on "Joe's Gruv Juuc", before rounding the record off with the piano-lead pump of "Easy Listening Miks Juuc".

Review: Back in 2016, Crackazat created a bespoke EP for Z Records in which he blended vocal acapellas from the label's archives with his own jazz-fired deep and soulful house grooves. Three years on, he's decided to repeat the exercise, in the process serving up four more killer cuts. He begins by layering Sunburst Band vocals atop bouncy pianos and rich Latin house instrumentation on "Fly Away", before effortlessly joining the dots between deep house, disco and jazz-funk on the superb "Crystal Eyes". "I'll Be There" is a colossal slab of gospel-tinged revivalist New Jersey garage smothered in weighty organ riffs, while "Some Day" offers a deeper and jazzier spin on the same retro-futurist sound.

Gig In The Ocean (5:41)
Review: Zouk-loving Gallic eccentrics The Pilotwings have been relatively quiet since wowing the world with their deliciously Balearic, '80s-influenced debut album "Les Portes Du Brionnais" in 2016. In fact, this outing is only their second release of note since. There's a wonderfully intergalactic, out-there feel to chugging opener "Trance En Aubrac", where synthesizer flute solos and sparkling electronic washes ride a chunky bassline and swinging, electro-influenced drums. "Futur Glouglou" sounds like it could have appeared on the soundtrack to a low-rent, acid-fuelled early '80s sci-fi film, while "Yakado" is a throbbing, floor-friendly re-make of an obscure Japanese dancefloor workout from the tail end of the '80s. If that lot's not bonkers enough for you, feel free to check the impossible-to-pigeonhole brilliance of closing cut "Gig In The Ocean".

Mitchell's Fold
Fontaine Bleau
Swelted
Review: REPRESS ALERT: London's Default Position label has thus far released music by Sebastian Mullaert, Terry Francis and many more. Now El Choop and Tim Gee step up to the plate with two seriously deep immersions. Bristol-based producer El Choop has previously popped up on a tape release with Heavenchord and also released a solo 12" last year on Etui, while this single marks Tim Gee's first outing to date. The two sound utterly at home in the dub house furrow they're digging into, leading in with the cavernous echo chamber meditations of "Mitchell's Fold" before slipping into the slightly more energised "Fontaine Bleau." "Swelted" graces the B side with the most upfront set of drums on the record, while maintaining the shimmering elegance of the dub chords that permeate the other two tracks.

Hurricane (Purple mix) (6:25)
Review: Norwegian producer Henning Severud AKA Telephones has decided to launch his own label. Fittingly, he handles the imprint's debut himself, dipping into his archive to serve up three tracks recorded at different times between 1998 and 2018. Our pick of a warm, colourful and loved-up bunch is "Aquatrak (FM AM Mix)", where jangling, Balearic house style piano riffs and dreamy chords splash around atop a chunky disco bassline and rolling drums. The quality threshold remains high throughout, though, with the '90s New Jersey-influenced deep house flex of "Amerikadegari (453-459 Mix)" and the late '80s Italian deep house vibes of "Hurricane (Purple Mix)" being almost equally as good.

Review: Bobby Donny head honcho Frits Wentink is back with the third edition of his BODOX remix/edit series, serving up more two bar house and chord stuff than you can shake an MPC at. Hear the Amsterdam-based house hero (and sometime Will & Ink man) get freaky like Adina - whatever time of day - on the smooth and smoky Rhodes-led vibe of the A side's first joint, while more dusty and evocative late night deepness awaits you on the flip. This is chased up by the rather upbeat shuffle of the S.A.D. Mix on B2, which is sure to get the hands in the air with its big piano chords. Review: The ever on-point Kimochi crew has described this label debut from talented Finn Lauri Saine as "a deceptively simple series of compositions that rewards deeper listening". We get what they're saying. One of the EP's greatest strengths is the way the intricate details and subtle layers of Saine's productions creep up on you on the third, fourth or fifth listen. It gives all four cuts a super-deep feel, putting them somewhere between lovely warm-up workouts, horizontal home listening fare and Sprinkles style peak-time hypnotism. Highlights include the sunset-ready jazz-house fluidity of "Swirl", the undulating, wonderfully picturesque ambient shuffle of "Saw U" and the dub-techno influenced soundscape flex of "Babel".

Review: The Swedish deep house duo of Alexander Berg (Dorisburg) and Nils Krogh (Arkajo) aka Genius Of Time are back outside of their established Aniara imprint for the second time on Running Back since 2014's Juno Jam EP. It has been a long time between drinks, with Krogh pursuing some great solo stuff as Arkajo and Berg performing in Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live. This terrific new EP features the bittersweet "Peace Bird" that follows through with warm Rhodes keys, woody percussion and an all-round lo-slung swagger. The spacey and understated "Smiling Into Eternity" follows through on the B side, followed by the reduced and emotive disco of "Rymd01". Great stuff once again by the Gothenburg-based duo.

Review: SlothBoogie, the London-based record label are back with their fifth instalment in their edit series. These lo-slung disco jams are exactly the sort of business you can expect their DJ crew to be throwing down at their much loved party series. First up we have Carlo with the super sexy and looped-up guitar licks of "Jumba Jooki" followed by Melbourne's Cassettes For Kids with the late night deepness of "No More Faith". Enter The Maze (6:30)
LFO Reprise (6:28)
Smoke (5:34)
Review: Vincent Floyd's Dawn Notes label scores a big one here with a new release from the legendary Chicago house producer Wyndell Long. Long's legacy reaches back to the '90s when he landed himself a deal with Peacefrog Records, kick starting a prolific run through all kinds of labels from Fiji to Isophlux, Djax-Up-Beats and beyond. You can hear the experience woven into his productions, but they're far from throwback jack tracks. "A History Of Warmth" is a heady opener, all submerged bass and hazy pads. "Enter The Maze" is a little more forthright but still comfortably rocking in the deeper end of the house music pool, but then "LFO Reprise" flips the script on the B side with a pepped up set of box beats and nagging synth lines to make heads turn. "Smoke" rounds the EP out with dusty samples and streamlined rhythms - a functional, funky workout.

Raw, atmospheric house are offered on the City Life EP. Review: Some two years after dropping his debut album, "Broken Knowz", Jay Daniel delivers a follow-up. Interestingly, the fast-rising Detroit producer opted to move away from his usual club sound on "Tala", recently telling Resident Advisor that it was, "an invitation to know me outside of DJing". It's as deep, jazzy and musically rich as you'd expect, with Daniel flitting between jazz-funk/broken beat fusion, spacey ambient soundscapes, head-nodding hip-hop beats, intergalactic R&B instrumentals, super-smooth beatdown fare and the kind of hushed, glassy-eyed grooves that are best enjoyed while lying flat on your back at six in the morning.

Worries In The Dance (4:31)
Earth People (6:39)
Review: After two years spent flirting with the Good Morning Tapes and Second Circle labels, Parisian producer Dang-Khoa Chau returns to the warm bosom of regular home Antinote Recordings. Title track "Mystic Warrior" is every bit as melodious and emotion-rich as his previous outings, with chiming synthesizer melodies, starry chords and tropical samples rising above a chunky, loose-but-locked-in groove. "Elements" is a little more alien sounding but no less humid, with new age style lead lines tumbling down over a loved-up drum machine groove, while the sub-heavy "Warriors In The Dance" brilliantly breaks up the beats and ratchets tropical tropes. If that's not enough to set the pulse racing, "Earth People" sounds like an unlikely jam between Steve Reich, Vangelis and early '90s ambient house sort Tetsu Inoue.

Review: Whut!? DJ Qu, Peven Everett and Josh 'Blaze' Milan on a cut together? That's correct the latest Strength Music transmission pairs up label boss Qu with two of house music's most iconic names in Everett and Milan for the A Side two parter "The Way". On the opening version, Everett's fragile vocal, is the perfect foil for one of Qu's deeper spacious arrangements which is blessed by Milan's key playing skills, with the latter element even more prominent on 'part two'. Face down and it's DJ Qu in solo mode for the excellent "Liquid" which sees a mainframe of clipped percussion and gurgling analogue basslines lifted towards the stars by the most wondrous of Utopian synth patterns and gurgling analogue basslines. Do check the accompanying heads down, bugged out "Liquid Beats" version too. Big release from NYC!

Jealousy & Lies (instrumental) (4:43)
Review: For their latest dive into house history, Italian reissue specialists Groovin' Records have decided to take us back to London in 1988. "Jealousy & Lies" was one of the earliest solo singles by Julian Jonah, a producer who later found greater fame as part of 187 Lockdown. It remains a wonderfully evocative chunk of dreamy deep house, with Jonah's impassioned spoken word vocal riding jacking drums, a chunky bassline and synthesizer sounds reminiscent of Larry Heard's late 1980s work. There's also a more raw-sounding "Alternative Dance Mix" that throws additional drum machine percussion and some tasty piano riffs into the mix, as well as a vocal-free instrumental take that's close in sound and feel to the A-side version.

Review: "The Cry", John Beltran's 1997 album under the Placid Angles alias, remains one of his most beautiful, picturesque and well-rounded works. This belated sequel - the first Placid Angles outing since - is therefore hotly anticipated. It's wonderfully warm, melodic and atmospheric, with Beltran - a producer renowned for his ambient and techno works - expertly fusing elements of dreamy deep house, futurist Motor City techno, purist 1990s tech-house, early '90s IDM, rolling jungle/early D&B and intergalactic ambient techno. The result is a set of tracks so emotion-rich and evocative that you may want to marry it, or at least take it home to meet your parents. In a word: stunning.

Innersoul Voyage (10:03)
Review: The latest missive on Alex Attias' revitalized Visions Inc. label comes courtesy of Thomas Arroyo AKA L'Aroye, a producer whose outings on Faces Records and Magic Black caught the ear of many deep house DJs. It's something of a doozy, too, with L'Aroye serving up two sparkling workouts that are almost rush-inducing in their layered melodiousness and rhythmic shuffle. The headline attraction is undoubtedly A-side "Inspiration", where Latin house beats are wrapped in squiggly P-funk motifs, talkbox vocals, rich chords and sun-kissed, Kai Alce style flourishes. "Innersoul Voyage" is an altogether deeper but arguably heavier affair, where dreamy chords, rich bass and blissful melodic motifs slowly rise above a particularly percussive, Osunlade style rhythm track.

He's in club mode on this second instalment of his "Sev Was Here" series, but this time round it's not quite as edgy as its predecessor. Davis Jr's vocals are out front, dealing with matters of the heart over those crucial, distinctive deep house bumps. "Your Lover" is a snappy, sexy number that works around an addictive, looped up hook, while "Rollercoaster" takes things a little more jacking. "Birds & Bee's" keeps the percussive pressure up, before the husky vocals come back in full force on killer closer "Cupid."

Following a couple of solid outings on Dekmantel, Hivern Discs and Secretsundaze, this first release since 2017 is a more than welcome sight. The three tracks on offer are rather good, too, if a little different from his early work. Mainly synthesizer-heavy, Donaldson employs a rush-inducing mixture of colourful lead lines, glistening chord sequences, spacey pads and glassy-eyed electronics. The most floor-friendly of the trio is undoubtedly the Italo-disco-influenced rush of "To Paradise", with the other two cuts exploring deeper, mellower shades of Serotonin-boosting instrumental '80s synth-pop.
