Party & Get On Down (Full Length mix) (5:37)
Party & Get On Down (3:51)
Review: Original pressings have been previously spotted passing hands for well over L1000: Big Apple Band's 1976 deep funk classic has been rarer than hen's teeth for most of its 41 year life. Its sought-after status accelerated by Keb Darge for last 15 or so years - that and the fact it's an out-and-out soul-stirring, honey-vocalled, low and slow funk burner - AOTN have finally unleashed it in it full length for all of us. And we should all be eternally grateful.

You Wouldn't Know (3:03)
Special People (3:50)
Review: The final single to be taken from Moneyshot and Rackabeat's hugely successful debut album As We Do Our Thing, "You Wouldn't know" and "Special People" close the LP cycle with fitting party spirit. The former is a dense weave of horn samples and well-known vocal hooks over some deliciously swashbuckling beats while the latter is a sweatier funk groove that's reminiscent of the classier end of big beat's golden era but with more original funk spirit. Rumour has it they're already deep into their second album...

Horizon's Theme (Pt 1) (3:26)
Horizon's Theme (Pt 2) (2:49)
Review: Prior to this year, funk connoisseurs and collectors have known only one record from the 70s Bay Area funk troupe Brass Horizon. That was "We Just Want To Play" and it's been known to go over $1500 in the past. 39 years after its release Super Disco Edits have incredibly unearthed an unreleased gem! So large it takes over both sides, "Horizon's Theme" is a groove heavy instrumental jammed with that classic laid back Berkley vibe where all players get a chance to shine. Part one is all about the organs while part two lets the horns tear the groove a new one. What a find.

It Ain't Fair But It's Fun (3:38)
Side Hustle (3:39)
Review: Who says the USA ain't putting out fine soul these days? If Detroit's Funk Night Records is anything to go by, then the scene is very much alive and kicking. This new EP by The Soul Motivators, a vast collective of musicians from the Detroit area, offer a magnificent cover of 1971's "It Ain't Fair, But It's Fun" by The Fabulous Originals, doing a great job of keeping the same raw, sketchy form of the original. The flip of this 7" features "Side Hustle", a slower, freakier funk swinger with a sublime blend of psych guitars and pure, unadulterated brass. Lovely.

Tito's Revenge (3:22)
Aftermath (4:14)
Review: The Soul Motivators made quite an impact with their Do Right! Music released 2013 debut album, Free To Believe. Somewhat surprisingly, Tito's Revenge marks their first appearance on wax since. The title track is, predictably, something of a horn-heavy gem. It effortlessly joins the dots between fuzzy early '70s funk, Hammond-heavy grooves, and the kind of dusty Afro-funk that's all the rage right now. The Afro-funk influence is even stronger on similarly killer flipside "Aftermath". While sadly not a funk cover of the Nightmares on Wax rave classic of the same name (now that would have been something), it nevertheless packs a serious punch - thanks, in no small part, to a series of sparring horn solos.

Review: Way back in 2002, Soundway Records announced their arrival with a fine collection of Ghanaian funk and Afro-beat delights. Since then, the vinyl edition of Ghana Soundz has become a sought-after item online, prompting Soundway to put together this welcome reissue. It contains a wealth of sought-after fare, from the heavyweight Afro-funk of Marijata's "Mother Africa" and percussive Afro-beat brilliance of Gyedo Blay Ambolley & The Steneboofs' "Simigwado", to the Africa '70 style shuffle and chated vocals of The Ogyatanaa Showband's, via the hot-to-trot high-life thrills of "Self Reliance" by The African Brothers. While other labels have since showcased the effervescent of the Ghanaian scene during the 1970s, few compilations have hit the spot quite like Ghana Soundz.

What You Gonna Do (3:47)
Life Is A Challenge (4:20)
Review: One of 2016's finest funk stories was, without question, when AOTN suddenly dropped this incredible unreleased album by criminally slept-on Jacksonville troupe Fruit. A stunning piece of work, even by Fryer's standards it was a coup-de-grace. Now two of the album's finest, funkiest, sweatiest jams are available on limited 45. Instant floor burners, just like the rest of the album, before the tracks are over you'll feel you and your floor have known them forever.

Time To Breathe (3:37)
Long Gone (4:14)
Review: The Templebys like to do their own thing. That's been crystal clear since their first, self-released soul EP on Funkaphrenic, and the outfit is back with another two-part stunner. "Time To Breathe" rolls its funky bass over some magnificent soul vocals, and the tune takes us into the light, welcoming in the new year and the warmer months ahead thanks to a fun, upbeat little groove. "Long Gone", on the other hand, is the more seductive of the two; a sleek, pensive and seductive punch of melodies that is easily playable on repeat for a couple of days. Top stuff, and hell-a limited!

You Win Some, You Lose Some (part 1) (3:21)
You Win Some, You Lose Some (part 2) (3:03)
Review: Washington D.C-based Jim Bennett is probably known for his numerous contributions to the "go-go" sound during the early-to-mid 1980s. Before that, he was a mainstay of the D.C funk scene, right at the moment when "go-go" was beginning to become a fully codified style of its' own. "You Win Some You Lose Some" was recorded in 1981, and sounds like it was inspired, in part, by "E Flat Boogie", a 1980 proto-go-go funk jam from future scene legends Trouble (later known as Trouble Funk). The A-side "Part 1", which boasts chanted vocals, rubbery slap bass from Bennett and some seriously punchy horn work, is particularly potent. Both sides sound like a party in the studio that we're eavesdropping on, such is their excitable vibrancy.

Amin Payne & Roughsoul - "Bad Juice" (3:22)
Amin Payne & First Touch - "Wait A Minute" (3:35)
Review: Born To Shine fly down under for the first time for a dangerous pair of collaborations from Melbourne's Amin Payne. Teaming up with fellow Aussie Roughsoul, "Bad Juice" lives up to its name as it quenches our thirsts with refreshing looseness and meaty, deviant boogie dynamics. German troupe First Touch tag-up on the B as "Wait A Minute" offers a dreamier departure with layers of keys and vocodered soul weaving in and out of the lolloping groove. Majestic.

I've Learned My Lesson (2:55)
Don't Do What I Do (2:23)
Review: Nebraska-raised, California-based soul man Vernon Garrett was at the peak of his powers when "I've Learned My Lesson" was first released back in 1974. He'd scored a number of dancefloor hits at the tail end of the '60s via 7" singles on such labels as Kent and Venture Records, and by '74 was happily releasing material on the Watts U.S.A imprint he'd established as a vehicle for his own work. "I've Learned My Lesson" is arguably Garrett's strongest song of the period - a James Brown style heavy funk workout full of rousing horns, blistering drum breaks, jammed-out organ lines, gospel style backing vocals and, of course, his own scorching lead vocal. Since original copies are pretty hard to find these days, this reissue is more than welcome.

Review: James Brown's 44th album, Everybody's Doin' The Hustle & Dead On The Double Bump enjoys its first official vinyl reissue in decades and it remains every bit as funky and cool as it was when it was released 41 years ago. Beyond the usual suspects (the punchy lead title track and version of "Brand New Bag") there are some of JB's most criminally overlooked jams such as the laid back restraint on "Turn On The Heat And Build Some Fire" (which is ironically very cool) and the muted trumpet tooted jazzy adventures "Superbad & Superslick" and the almost bluegrass "Calm & Cool". Timeless soul magic.

Review: Since its' release in 1981, this quirky debut album from Louis' Band - a short-lived studio outfit put together by arranger and producer Louis Vanni - has become a sought-after item amongst record collectors. Happily, Mondo Groove has decided to make it available digitally for the first time. It's an eccentric but hugely entertaining affair, featuring a range of tunes that variously touches on jazz-funk, AOR disco, flute-laden instrumental soul, synth-laden rock-and-roll revivalism, sax-laden sleaziness, and the kind of oddball, library music style fair that some may consider 'Balearic'. Given that original vinyl copies are hugely difficult to find, this digital edition is well worth picking up.
