Why Can't There Be Love?
I Can Deal With That
Review: The late great Alabama babe Edwards was last re-introduced by Adidas in 2010 via a very cool Pilooski remix. Cleverly revisited in 'original' form, the 1971 version is quite subversive for its time thanks to its distorted rhythm guitar providing a unique backbone. "I Can Deal With That" takes us forward to 77 on a slinkier, sexier soul vibe. Beautiful. Shoe companies should run labels more often...

Stevie's Lady (Scrimshires Golden edit)
Handle It (Scrimshires Sylver edit)
Review: Wah Wah 45s have been championing Scrimshire for a long, long time. His original productions shimmer with a fine-tuned sense of musicality and lush cinematic textures and his edits are exemplary examples of respectful pimping (most notably his recent Merry Clayton renditions). Here we find him in 'edit mode' as Stevie Wonder gets a dreamy extension with a heavy emphasis on the fluttering piano and The Sylvers are playfully tweaked and teased into more of a dubbed out bass version. Scrimshire? Pimpshire, more like.

Syl Johnson - "Different Strokes"
Divine Force - "My Uptown Beat"
Review: Another clever release from Originals, Syl Johnson's "Different Strokes" has been sampled by some of the biggest names in hip-hop history; Kanye, Jay-Z, Wu Tang, J Dilla, Public Enemy... The list genuinely goes on and on. A classic piece of soul funk, it's hard to spot the breakbeat sample as the tune's so embracive and funky. For a remix-rendition Originals have picked Divine Force's "My Uptown Beat". Probably the rarest of the lot, it's a formative piece of late 80s hip-hop when b-boys were gearing up to jump the shark. An excellent, not to mention damn funky, history lesson!

The Revolution Of St Vincent - "The Little You Say"
St Maarten's Rolling Tones - "It's A Feeling"
Review: More consistent deep funk supremacy from Milan's coolest label, Record Kicks. Here they head west to the Caribbean for two rare-as-hens-teeth tropical funk joints that have never been released on 45. With a crisp plucked guitar and Hammond riff, Harold Lewis's rich vocals and a hip-swaying groove, it's not hard to hear why "The Little You Say" has been sought after for years in funk circles. Meanwhile on the B the Dutch Caribbean act Rolling Tone go for more of a frenetic horn-heavy riff that drops into a softer bed of tightly woven vocal shooby-dooby harmonies.

Review: Released the same week as his retrospective on King Street, Louie Vega is currently reminding us of who the boss is. And with such a warm, wide-armed creative vision, no one's going to argue. Take this; his first Elements Of Life LP in almost eight years. Armed with full live band, it's a nonstop adventure into Latino, Afro, R&B, house driven by organic, orchestrated grooves and supersized production values. Highlights include the raw Afrobeat and sweet jazz fusion of "Overtake Don Overtake Overtake" and Josh Milan's sugar-sweet harmonies and lyrical depths on the neatly mirroring opener and finale "Children Of The World" and "Dream A World". Beautiful.

Spanky Wilson - "Sunshine Of Your Love" (re-edit)
Spanky Wilson - "Sunshine Of Your Love" (1968 original)
Peggy Lee - "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay" (re-edit)
Peggy Lee - "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay" (1970 original)
Review: Warehouse Find! Released in 68, resurfaced in 05 and back with a very polite, well-polished edit, Spanky Wilson's cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love" is one of the best funk cover versions ever pressed to wax. It is quite criminal it never enjoyed the exposure it deserved back in the day. As for Peggy Lee covering Otis Reading; do we need to spell out how good it is? The drums on the edit are especially well executed. Vinyl was invented for releases like this!

Boss Lady
Good Things
Review: Detroit funk collective Will Sessions sounds like they've jumped four five decades directly from the 60s. Their fuzzy, loose tightness works as a perfect bed for Coko's fiery emotional vocals as they treat us to two Sharon Jones-level funk sessions. "Boss Lady" is a direct strutter with spit fire vocal passion and an overwhelming JBs style swing while "Good Things" is more of a bluesy, sultry workout with a killer percussive breakbeat breakdown. Listen to the boss lady! She knows what she's talking about!
