Review: Given the length of his career, it's rather surprising to find that Under The Sun is Mark Pritchard's first under his given name. As critics have pointed out, it's an overwhelmingly beautiful and poignant set, built around an intoxicating fusion of ambient electronics, soft touch instrumentation, bubbling beats, grandiose chords, and on-point collaborations (check the vocal contributions of Beans, Thom Yorke, and Linda Perhacs). In some ways, it recalls Pritchard's pioneering work with Tom Middleton as Global Communication, while feeling altogether more grown up and musically complex. Regardless, it's an undeniably brilliant album.

The Weatherman
Review: A Colourful Storm inaugurates its vinyl label with a reissue of a long lost Oz classic. Formed by Brian Hall in 1982, Denial originally appeared on the legendary M Squared label, home to industrial and wave outfits Systematics, SPK, Scattered Order and The Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast. Until now, Hall's own work has only surfaced once - in 2012, under his Aural Indifference moniker on the Minimal Wave Tapes Volume Two compilation. Here, Denial's version of the Mamas and Papas' classic, and melancholy The Weatherman are presented in their original format and deservedly remastered. A Colourful Storm is a label co-run by Moopie, who contributed the second mix CD for Silent Servant's Jealous God imprint.

Review: Frequent Jeremy Greenspan and Morgan Geist collaborator Jessy Lanza was hailed as a future star on the release of her 2013 debut album, Pull My Hair Back. That album projected her as some kind of New York freestyle chanteuse dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, backed by an all-electronic band fascinated with the potential of future R&B and left-of-centre synth-pop. This belated follow-up, which was once again produced in cahoots with Jeremy Greenspan, is even better. Colourful, vibrant and attractive, the ten songs are truthful to their '80s NYC inspirations, but smartly avoid the pitfalls of such blatant retro-futurism. In other words, it's a superb collection of future R&B and pop gems.

Review: Danny 'Legowelt' Wolfers describes the music he makes under the Occult Orientated Crime alias as "an accumulation of 20 years of musical research and training, and what affect it has on the brain". Read into that what you will; in practice, his OOC output allows Wolfers to explore the more deep and cosmic end of the ambient spectrum, with sly nods towards jazz and movie soundtracks amongst the Motor City synthesizers, buried spoken word vocals and intergalactic chord progressions. The fantastically titled Just A Clown On Crack is the first OOC release to make it to wax, and effortlessly recalls the early '90s glory days of ambient house and intelligent techno, whilst still retaining many of Wolfers' stylistic trademarks.

Review: Long players from L'estasi Dell'oro, D.A.R.F.D.H.S and Kartei signalled a move into artist albums from Dutch label Field that felt wholly right, and they've scored a real treat again in securing this Cold Radiance LP from Japanese artist IORI. Known for a potent brand of deep techno that has seen releases on Semantica, Prologue and DJ Nobu's Bitta label, Iori Asano is offered the chance to explore something different on this, his second album. Encourage to dabble in more explicitly ambient and experimental composition, Asano positively revels in this creative freedom for an eight-track album he himself likens to an "aerial sci-fi movie soundtrack." The gravelly sonic tones of opener "Transmission" sets the scene for what turns out to be one of the most enjoyable ambient techno albums of 2016 so far.

Review: Compiled by Uncle O, the title of this compilation is pretty clear and representative of the sounds contained within: A Voyage Across French Electronic Cosmic and Avantgarde 70s-80s; there you have it, a look into a relatively neat and much coveted moment in musical history, and Because Music have spared you the trouble of looking for these records in old charity shops and car boot sales. In reality, the best part of these songs are going for a lot of dollar on the second-hand market, so you probably wouldn't find them anyway. In any case, we have a wide spectrum of disco-not-disco sounds from names who you might not recognise, but who have had a lasting effect on disco, dance and electronic music as a whole. You're not restricted to one genre either, with tunes from Rosebud bringing the funk, Queen Samantha's gorgeous disco, electronic improv by Nicolas Peyrec, and much more. Highly recommended. Uff - check that proto-techno on Heldon's "Les Soucoupes Volantes Vertes"!

Review: Whilst the album format has caused countless electronic artists issues, its clear Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Luca Mortadella doesn't feel stricken by such problems. Self-Mythology is the third Lucy album in five years and finds the Italian producer drawing ever deeper into his own world of atmosphere-laden electronics. Described as "a meditation upon the reciprocity between personal hopes and fears and collective dreams and nightmares," the album's nine tracks find Lucy's percussive streaks, complex polyrhythms and patterned ambience reach for new heights and calls to mind the Tryptych-era work of Demdike Stare at times. A real album to sink in, drink up and swim around in for several hours.

Review: Suzanne Ciani's first official releases came out in the 1980s, but the producer was already making music by the time she was seven. In fact, this collection of live performances dates back to a gig in 1975, where a young Ciani was already experimenting with complex Buchla synthesizers. This is terrific material, and if you're looking for looking for deep, treacherous noise experimentations, you don't need to go for something contemporary. Ciari's sounds are still cutting-edge in 2016, and we can imagine just how foreign this music must have sounded to an audience back in 1975. Big applause to Sir Votel and Sir Shipton of Finders Keepers for this one.

The Mura Oka project from Latency co-founder Sidney Gerard and Louis Vial (Ezzaid) stood tall alongside those names, so do you expect any less from Australian producer Kane Ikin? No! Having just graced Type - John Twells & Stefan Lewandowski taste-making label - Ikin is a producer making music worth talking about, let's just call in undefinable. This Basalt Crush EP sways between the forlorn ambient and tribal haunt of Blackest Ever Black ("Echoic" and "Autophasic") to the scatter beats of Samurai Horo character Ena ("Grid"). With some heavy, slowed down and instrumental post-punk on "Gestalt" and to the luminous glow of "Street Flare", this record is another pearl from Latency.

Review: Invocations II (The Obelisk Of TJ // Age Of Apathy Tape) finds the curious John T Gast follow in the footsteps of Galcher Lustwerk in having his mix for cult online platform Blowing Up The Workshop make the transition to vinyl. Any one that indulged in Gast's wonderful Planet Mu album last year or has picked up on the random assortment of cross-format releases the sometime Inga Copeland collaborator should definitely investigate this nine-track collection. Self-released by Gast himself, it further casts him as one of the UK's most unique talents, channelling a murky haze close to Gunnar Wendel, or toying with pitch-shifted pop vocals and melodies ripped from toy-like instruments. You won't find another slab of vinyl that sounds quite like Invocations II this month.

Review: Stephane Laporte's Fourrure Sounds, released to critical acclaim back in 2014, was something of a lo-fi triumph. Recorded entirely at night, with a variety of old analogue synths and a battered old tape recorder, it saw the Domotic producer pay tribute to experimental French electronic music of the 1970s. This follow-up is almost as good, with Laporte drifting between throbbing, percussive fare (see "Dispositions"), Black Zone Myth Chant style madness ("Ossature"), fine cosmic workouts ("Tunnel"), and blissful, new age-inspired ambient concoctions ("Timre"). It's arguably a little more expansive in scope than its' predecessor, but no less entertaining for it. In fact, it's another must-check record from Antinote.

Review: Space Oddities (1972 - 1982) are the results of Frenchman Georges Achille Teperino aka Nino Nardini, fellow countryman Roger Roger and German Eddie Warner's collaborations over ten years at Ganaro recording studio. Given some underground recognition in the late nineties by the likes of Barry 7 of Add N to (X) (with his Connectors series) or UK electronica legend Luke Vibert, they can now add Alexis Le-Tan (Les Edits Du Golem) and Jess as devotees, who made the effort of compiling the release. As Born Bad stated quite succinctly, the trio used their "strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that resembled the future of music. This collection presents some of the highlights from their light-hearted, electronic pop sessions."

Review: Aside from a recent outing under the DJ Jenifa name on Mule Musiq, it's been a while since we last heard any new music from the Essex man known as Gold Panda. Three years on from his last LP, the Ghostly Intl-released Half Of Where You Live, Gold Panda resurfaces on a new label in City Slang with his third album, Good Luck And Do Your Best. This eleven-track adventure is directly inspired by several trips through Japan (indeed GP was originally there with the intention of making a documentary) and have been slimmed down from over 18 months of recordings. Some limber-fingered usage of sample flipping is present from the off as Gold Panda presents a delightfully off-kilter brand of slumped instrumental beatscapes that run the range of tempos and moods.

Review: Umberto is Kansas City via Los Angeles' Matt Hill who alongside his revolving cast of supporting musicians has been a staple of local imprint Not Not Fun for some years and this is his third album for the label since 2013's Confrontations LP. There's a variety of moods and grooves on here but as always, Hill's music always creates some sort of imaginary 80s horror soundtrack and this one is no different. But we particularly enjoyed the dark outsider techno of "Drifters", the spooky and slow burning industrial textures of Black Sea" or the pumping synth-pop groove of "Dawn Of Mirrors".

Review: Jim Jupp aka Belbury Poly has been running the Ghost Box imprint for over ten years now and, from the sound it, he has no intention of stopping his lust for sleek, spectral electronica with a vintage feel. New Ways Out is a perfect companion to the rest of his catalogue, and the sounds within are workable in more than one situation - on your headphones, on a beach, in a car, or even in a corner of some hedonistic bar. The ten track on this LP offer the listener a 360 degree experience, a wide-eyed foray into the weird and wonderful mind of this multi-talented producer who seems to stretch the meaning of electronica to its very limits.

Review: Julianna Barwick's last album came back in 2013 and, as always, it was a glorious ode to all things minimal and ethereal. The talented ambient sketcher returns to the Dead Oceans label with an even moodier piece this time, the ambiguously named Will. Sticking true to her sound and vibe, Barwick delivers an album that is full of the right kind of nostalgia, presented in through nine cinematic shades of sonic meditation. There is plenty of her own voice amid the lonesome drones and solitary piano keys, and although the album is vast in terms of sounds, the artiste manages to carry through a very particular sort of sound and vision. A magnificently delivered 'concept' LP.

Review: Haunter Records, the Milanese experimental threshold pushers and the mob behind the city's notorious Macau squat parties. are back with Weightausend aka Matthias Gerrardi, his second release for the label. "Green Death" in its original form is fairly restrained yet a cleverly executed system of bass therapy. But it's the industrial strength polyrhythms of "Meet Your Doom!" where he really finds his sound. The remix by Christoph De Babalon draws the track out with a long and nefarious dark ambient intro until the drums come in, in spectacular fashion.

Review: The Diskant label has been among our favourites over the last three years and its boss men, The Durian Brothers, are without doubt some of the most interesting producers alive right now. This is because they play with the genre, they merely use it as a base for their tribalistic rhythms to grow and land on different, much more cinematic territories. This time, side A is helmed by like-minded producer High Wolf, who delivers a nutty, tropical kind of waver on "ARA13", and an even more tripped-out set of jungle hypnotics through "Theorem 86". The Brothers jump in on the flip with the gloriously dubby and steely rhythm of "Mathematique" - the sure winner on here - and the more broken, more abstract pile of drums and hollow bass that makes up "Flustertute". Excellent, as always.

Animal Farm (6:23)
Chasing God Through Palmyra (6:17)
Review: The Nils Frahm-fronted Nonkeen have taken the R&S fanbase by surprise thanks to their debut album The Gamble. While the imprint has been heavily associated with contemporary techno and driving post-dubstep over the last five years, Nonkeen seems like a breath of fresh air, and also the perfect way to meander into different sorts of sounds and genres. "Animal Farm" and "Chasing God Through Palmyra" are taken from the debut album for easier DJ playback; the former is a murky, dubbed-out lo-fi drum jam that has more in common with African Head Charge than Gilles Peterson, and the latter carries that same kind of jab-ridden spirit through to a more stable strain of pseudo 4/4 that'll work wonders in the midst of a wide-eyed house set. A truly recommended piece of work from the label.
