Aztec Chant
Livity
Review: Although Peverelist was last spotted with Kowton on Hessle Audio where they delivered the blinding "Raw Code", this new solo outing is the first release for the Livity Sound imprint he runs with Kowton and Asusu in nearly a year. Once again taking on the truncated Pev moniker adopted for his recent Kowton collaboration, "Aztec Chant" continues the producer's recent forays into slower rhythmic terrain, combines the producer's unmistakably dubby breakbeats with an primitive, atonal melody. "Livity" meanwhile recalls his Hessle Audio classic "Dance Til The Police Come," sharing a similarly unhinged, ravey quality bolted together with ramshackle piano chords. TIP!

Review: This Park Days EP from JTC marks the expansion into dedicated artist releases for Mancunian club night and label Hoya:Hoya, whose previous releases have been split EPs that collated material from Ikonika, Eliphino, Ras G and the aforementioned trio of Lone, Illum Sphere and Krystal Klear. JTC is of course one alias used by the multi talented Tadd Mullinix, also recording under the Dabrye, SK-1, Charles Manier and James T Cotton aliases as well as several collaborative projects with fellow Nation luminaries D'Marc Cantu and Melvin 'Traxx' Oliphant III. Four tracks in total; each one highlights just how deep Cotton's scope and abilities go. Cuts such as "Argo" and "Cereal" both resonate with icy Detroitian synths that ripple over crafty beatwork that hints at his very early days as a junglist on Rephlex. "South Brooks" and "Gallup", meanwhile, show an altogether deeper, more house-inclined side to the producer. The former is especially jacking.

Sunset To Neath
Review: Established last year with killer releases from the likes of Photomachine and Presk, 2020's Midnight Visions brand continues to spread the good word house gospel. And who better to continue the sonic sermons than 10 Thousand Yen man Doc Daneeka? Across the four tracks we run the gamut of nocturnal grooves. From soulful filtered house ("Everyday") to subtle n' slinky, sexy electro ("Sunset To Neath"), Doc's prescribed a fine line of midnight tonics. You'll be hard-pushed which one to play first.

Everything
White Screen
D'Angelo
Review: Although ClekClekBoom's first label compilation is imminent, the Parisian imprint has still found time to put out this fine EP from label mainstay French Fries, with three tracks of the kind of dark, rhythmic heads-down club gear the imprint have become increasingly good at unearthing. It's an EP of contrasting dark and light elements; "Everything" is an atmospheric piece of precision bass techno, with forceful kicks interspersed with laser-cut synths, while "White Screen" is a more rolling number whose fierce toms are joined by cascading sheets of neon. "D'Angelo" on the other hand is a stylistic about turn, dropping the tempo for a murky, late-night house track filled will shimmering dub chords and a particularly funky bassline.

Footwork/Juke
DJ Rashad - "Rollin'"
DJ Rashad - "Let It Go"
DJ Rashad & DJ Manny - "Drums Please"
DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn - "Broken Hearted"
Review: Getting stuck into a single for Hyperdub as juke and footwork continue to blend into the wider electronic music landscape, DJ Rashad keeps his style true to his roots with rapid fire samples, manic drum patterns and an otherworldly atmosphere. "Rollin" is a bittersweet jam that emotionally pivots on a heartbreak R&B centrepoint, but "Let It Go" soon puts paid to such melancholia with a nod to jungle that finds snappy slices of breakbeat hammering out in a vibe reminiscent of the early days of rave. "Drums Please" builds on that theme with a thrilling jaunt through a moody landscape powered by intricate snare rolls, entering a more adventurous and thought provoking headspace where footwork can show its true potential. Coming full circle, "Broken Hearted" works back into the chopped up balladry of the first track.

WLVS

The City
Not Now My Love
Review: Fusing the energy of garage with gothic pop songwriting, Ghosts are next up on Champion Sound to impart their crossover baiting message. There's no denying the energy worked into the rugged beat on "WLVS", while the vocals and melodics temper the rowdy bump of the drums into a more contemplative end result seemingly aimed at explicitly depicting what Burial's music has always implied. "Escort Service" is further out into leftfield with a dynamic and bugging beat that swerves any attempt to lock onto it, while the tart synth hook seems lifted from the brazen vaults of grime. "The City" is more concerned with haunting atmospherics and lingering drones in search of a more overtly downtempo end, and "Not Now My Love" rounds the EP off with yet more of that regal grandeur atop crisp, propulsive rhythms.

Legacy Of The Lost
Riveted
Review: Once again Bristol's Idle Hands have come up trumps with another 12" of locally sourced talent in the form of the third record form the anonymous Rhythmic Theory. The producer debuted last year with Twilight Distinction, a release for the BRSTL imprint that showed the mystery entity to have a knack for creating deep, viscous loop techno in the Skudge mould. Rhythmic Theory's Idle Hands release is something a little different; described by the label as "deeply indebted" to jungle and D&B, "Land Of The Lost" fleshes out its deep techno skeleton with powerfully oscillating low end, while "Riveted" takes a syncopated, shackling rhythm and combines it with cavity-vibrating, jungle-inspired sub-bass.

Revolver
Transmission Funk
Review: South London Ordnance's rise has been nothing short of meteoric over the past year, and now he officially joins the aristocracy of bass music with his debut release for Scuba's Hotflush. "Revolver" is pretty much the most refined example of the current wave of tech-bass, pairing steely, swung beats with a roaring sample sounding like a dying jet engine, before moving through a multitude of dubbier techno moods. On the flip, "Transmission Funk" is perhaps the lightest thing he's produced contrasting pulsing bass and severe plate glass tones with shimmering background harmonics, all held together with his signature structural scaffold of firm kicks and sharp, rolling snares.

Filled
Brim
Boarder
Review: Rocking up to his regular home at 50 Weapons, Bambounou brings yet more of his playful, experimental bass music to bear with this rock solid three tracker. There's a great focus on wild, disorientating noises hammered into solid rhythms, whether it's the metallic swirls that slop around the insides of "Filled", or the jerky tap drips that inject the funk into "Brim". Aside from the spicy sounds, there's also plenty to hold onto, not least with the whopping great chord stabs that also inhabit "Brim". Having said that, "Boarder" is more intent on plunging you into a bizarre soundworld of bold VHS synth drones and snaking percussion that seems intent on dodging the groove at all costs.

1551
Review: Arriving on a rather tasty one-sided piece of marbled blue vinyl, Portuguese duo Photonz latest track, "1551", is described by "Unknown To The Unknown" as "Anti Illuminati Egyptian Trance House". It's somewhat apt as a description, as the track's tumbling tropical rhythms are joined by the kind of hypnotic melodic arrangement that gets right under your skin alongside some piano chords that make the whole thing sound like Chicago house as invented by Giorgio Moroder.

Have I Told You (Citizen remix)
Review: Since it launched roughly a year ago, the 20:20 Midnight Visions label has established itself as a worthy outlet for the various strains of bass indebted UK dance subculture, incorporating material from Ossie, Doc Daneeka, Photomachine and Behling & Simpson. With previous on left_blank, Dummy and Church, young Brighton producer Lorca passes the zeitgeist test with flying colours and his three original productions on the If I Told You EP are some of his most accomplished work to date. The title track sets the tone, with doleful melodic touches and an expertly chopped titular vocal refrain augmented by some fine kinky percussive edits. "Searching" sinks even deeper into the maudlin end of the Bass music spectrum, with rhythmic elements at a minimum to let the palpable atmospherics dominate the channels, whilst "Giant Stars" feels like it's ready to spring skywards at any moment. To crank up the current factor, Madtech and Love Fever artist Citizen remixes the title track, nudging it much closer to the thick set textured house he's been noted for recently.

Kiss Kiss (Canblaster remix)
Mirror Maru (G Vump remix)
Review: The Mirror Mirau EP from Pelican Fly's mysterious production star Cashmere Cat was a rather impressive debut release that sounded equally appropriate for the club and the bedroom - four tracks of exemplary R&B/electronica creativity that were filled with organic sounds and sexy synth vibes. Here we find some key Ed Banger players getting mucky with the parts; Feadz & Kito serve up a sassy slice of future garage, Busy P gets fresh with the old school pitched down piano chords, Canblaster presses the sexy button and finally G Vump goes all jazzy and allows more of the organic nature of the original shine over the weighty kicks.

Too Much Talk
Too Much Talk (Tessela remix)
Too Much Talk (Beneath 350 remix)
Review: NTS affiliates 92 Points secure some Alex Coulton heat and back it with remixes from Tessela and Beneath - this is how you put together a 12" mate. With his releases for Idle Hands and Livity Sound last year, Coulton proved himself to be one of British techno's most interesting propositions, wrapping Shackleton-style atmospherics with sparing rhythmic structures. This continues with "Too Much Talk", its UKF inspired snares and deep subs sound very much like the recent work of Beneath - who himself contributes a remix which outdoes Coulton in its tense atmospherics. The most striking rework however comes from Tessela, whose break beat jungle reinterpretation has the expected amount of compression-induced grit and rhythmic swagger.

Confunktion
Double U
Review: With the ripples emanating from their bass music concoctions spreading ever wider, dynamic trio Dark Sky make the move to Tectonic to nudge that very label's remit into new territory. With their previous form on 50 Weapons and Black Acre amongst others, "Confunktion" sounds like a logical next step in limber but deadly accurate electro stylings. They don't lean on obvious tropes of the genre, bringing a more modern bass music slant to the synths and fully employing studio skills to make for an addictive, head-snapping beast of a track. "Double U" heads into a freakier domain defined by globulous synth drops and a tribal groove as fruity as it is funky.

Sloe Eyes
Guts
Review: Making his first full appearance on Jacques Greene's Vase imprint, Samoyed brings an energetic, ravey streak to his more typically mellow output, but he's still in command of a keen ear for strung out pads and emotional vocal snippets. "Sloe Eyes" is the sweeter of the two, but still finds itself whipping up into a breakbeat frenzy in between the dreamy breakdowns. "Guts" leads in on a lilting loop of melancholia, before a rugged beat and prominent bass come marching in to add some ass-wiggling dirt to the wistful situation. Fuelled by the sharp programming of UK funky and yet still as spooky as anything Samoyed has produced, it's a different kind of dance wrecker.
