  1. The Soniferous Garden (14:12)
  2. Rainfall On Red Earth (16:06)
Review: Auntie Flo's Huntleys & Palmers residency in London has helped the artist to both mature his sound as a producer, and get his name across to a vast house audience looking for good vibes. And it's with these sorts of release that they've found it. The man is back but this time for the incorrigible Sofrito, who are branching out with this new Super Singles subsidiary imprint, mashing up contemporary dance with something veritably tropical. "The Soniferous Garden" is an excellent warm-up tune, or the sort of groove you stick on to send your audience left of field, thanks to its slow, chuggy groove, gorgeous instrumentation, and subtle Afro lyricism. "Rainfall On Red Earth" travels at a similar tempo, except that here the mood has grown more pensive, and Auntie Flo offers another stunning piece of music that is perfect for both dancing or straight-up vibing.

  1. The Highest Bidder (3:20)
  2. Hard World (3:33)
Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

  2. Swingin' Stars Orchestra - "Jam Jam" (4:10)
Review: The Sofrito label rarely, if ever, get is wrong, doesn't it? Once again, the London label bursts through the dance with two utterly steaming Haitian destroyers from Dominica's no.1, and these two cuts are bound to satisfy just about anyone into GOOD music. "Las Mal Parle" is a swinging, instantly hummable rhythm that you can safely leave on repeat for hours at a time, while "Jam Jam" is more of a Latino groove for the big ball dance - another stunner and a perfect companion to the beast that is the A-side. Another solid, timeless record from Sofrito.

Review: Tucked away deep in the heart of Barranquilla's infamous city center are the remains of one of the most important record labels of Colombia's Musica Tropical scene: Felito Records. This 'best of'-compilation features a blistering set of heavy grooves with deep Afro undertones expressed in a stellar array of hybrid tropical sounds. The material was selected and dug up by Sanjay Agarawi and includes bonus DVD of the Colombian Gold documentary, which digs deep into the heritage of Colombian music

Review: Last May, Tal released On Mande, the second album from traditional Kenyan combo Ogoya Nengo & The Dodo Women's Group. As the title suggestions, On Mande Versions sees their percussive workouts being remixed by a quartet of electronic music talents. Lena Willikens turns "Orutu Run" into a mid-tempo, tribal techno chugger, while Tolouse Low Trax re-imagines as "Mix Zwei" as a spaced-out Afro-dub masterpiece. Orson's more floor-friendly version of "Bunde Dub" continues on a similarly steppy, bass-heavy tip, leaving Berceuse Heroique regular Don't DJ to steal the show with a thrillingly weird and out-there rework of "Sorbe Pekingese".

Review: Africa Seven continue their rich vein of releases this year with an indepth exploration of the Tala A.M. discography. Those unfamiliar with the Cameroonian's story will be shaken by the adversity he lived through before going on to enjoy a successful music career; blindness and the death of both parents afflicted him as a child. However Tala Andre Marie's love of music was his guiding light, as was Cameroonian icon Manu Dibango who helped him relocate to Paris and thus began a recording career consisting of no less than 13 albums! African Funk Experimentals 1975 To 1978 sees Africa Seven dip into the Tala AM archives for a ten track presentation of his funkiest cuts during the early years of recording for the Fiesta label. "Hot Koki" is a particular treat, whilst disco selectors will love "Sugar Lump".

Taken from albums such as Djambo's Djambo's, Africa Oumba and his two eponymous albums, the far-reaching collection ranges from downhome low-swung bluesy funk disco ("Soul Castle") to glistening highlife vibrancy ("Lambo Lena") by way of thumping French disco ("Nyambe"). Review: Abdul-Malik is noted for integrating Middle Eastern and North African music styles in his jazz music. He was the bassist for Art Blakey, Earl Hines, Randy Weston, and Thelonious Monk among others. As an oud player he did a tour of South America for the United States Department of State and performed at an African jazz festival in Morocco. The Eastern Moods of Ahmed Abdul-Malik is the fifth album by double bassist and oud player Ahmed Abdul-Malik featuring performances recorded in 1963 and originally released on the Prestige label.

Review: The fact that Ethiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits has been reissued on numerous occasions over the last two decades is testament to the enduring quality of this most obscure of compilations. It first appeared on Amha Eshete's Amha Records label way back in 1972, and was the imprint's tenth and final album. An all-star affair featuring many of Eshete's most trusted musicians and producers, its ten tracks gleefully join the dots between dusty rhythm and blues, jazz, funk, soul, Brazilian rhythms and African grooves. It's genuinely "all killer" and "no filler", which may go some way to explain Heavenly Sweetness's decision to put it out again.

Review: Global Pop First Wave is quickly making a name for itself in the world-psych communities, and all the praise is most deserved. They're parent label, Corvo Records, is a more typical Berlin affair, carrying subtle techno and ambient infusions, but this imprint doesn't feel like a million miles away; they share something mystical with one another. This is the third volume of the label's Saz Beat, a variety of Middle-Eastern funk, with a distinctive flavour of pure psychedelia. Masterfully put together and unapologetically presented on one slab of vinyl along with an 8-page booklet, this is pretty essential to anyone into the infamous Turkish funk sound. It's a keeper, and a fine addition to an already stellar catalogue.
