Digital Solutions

Review: The master returns! Digital Solutions sees Juan Atkins toast some 35 years as a Detroit techno visionary with the release of a new Model 500 album after some 16 years! The notion of a new Model 500 long player was first mooted by Atkins last summer and now arrives as the most high profile release from his own Metroplex label in some time. Whereas recent years have seen Atkins open up Model 500, working with Mike Banks, DJ Skurge and Mark Taylor both live and on the smattering of 12"s issued through R&S, Digital Solutions is largely the work of Juan alone. Nine tracks deep, Digital Solutions features a crisp array of electro and techno productions from Atkins with "Standing In Tomorrow" and "Storm" standing out upon first listen.

The Eyes Themselves
Strange Attractor
Arc
Review: Some new Planetary Assault Systems material from Mr Luke Slater is always a welcome sight and The Eyes Themselves finds the techno pioneer on suitably mind bending form. Issued naturally by his own Mote Evolver, this three track 12" bristles with the sort of intense, physical energy that makes the music feel alive and somewhat alien with the title track a perfect embodiment. Across the six minutes, "The Eyes Themselves" develops from a dark throb into full blown techno psychedelia that possesses the ability to draw the more open minds into another dimension. Similar things could be said about "Strange Attractor" so we will draw your attention to the B side cut "Arc" where intensity is the predominant characteristic across the eight thrilling minutes.

Track 4
Review: After Sushitech did such a fine job of reissuing his classic early works, its little wonder Steve O'Sullivan decided to grace the label with some fresh material in the aftermath. The four tracks on Interchangeable Patterns Part 1 deliver for any fan of the Bluetrain / Wise Caucasian sound, keeping a strict economy over what gets in to the track and reveling in the space left around the sounds. Its how dub techno should be made, and from the upfront thrust of "Track 1" to the beatless drift of "Track 2" O'Sullivan demonstrates exactly why he's such a legend in this field.

Grn-HF (7:14)
Acidspix (7:42)
Review: Italian techno demi-god Lory D returns with the third instalment of the Strange Days series for Glasgow's Numbers! This guy is simply unstoppable and it's simply incredible to hear how he has managed to keep his sound so damn contemporary over the years. Oh, and it's rumoured that he used to be one of Aphex Twin's favourite techno artists back in the day! "Gm-HF" is a heads-down kinda nodder, packing a humongous bassline for the peak time floor, while "Acidspix", as the name suggests, is a beautifully odd 303 jam with enough stability to make it a perfectly usable dancefloor weapon. What more can we say? It's totally unmissable and warmly recommended.

Warrior Within
Wonderers Of Time
Spinning Across The Sky
Radium World
Review: Mystery production unit DJ Bmx continue their thrilling, no-nonsense adventures in the underground with the Conquest of Gravity EP for MIL. Techno-fused roller "Warrior Within" gets matters underway as thumping bass and ticking hi hats form the fore of the track, marching along over off-kilter bleeps and succinct glitches. The rough n ready aesthetic of the track sets the tone excellently for the EP, leading coherently into "Wonders of Time" where slight changes and improvisations keep your attention, with dubbed out key jabs that are matched melodically against atmospheric synth pads whirling in and out over crisp percussion clicks. "Spinning Across the Sky" maintains the inspiration for myriad sources; cosmic, dreamy chimes are sprinkled over a tentatively used piano sequence, distorted key kicks and muddied percussion. Its the only moment on the EP to include a vocal, and its used beautifully as it floats around the tracks central structure, lending it a spacious and depth-charged feel. "Radim World" finishes everything off with a touch of Pepe Bradock style elegance - the multi-layered arrangements are fluid and dynamic, resulting in well-executed deep house.

White Of The Eye
White Of The Eye (Silent Servant remix)
Sensory Balance
Review: 'White of the Eye' is the first release under "Nothing but Blood" from Scott Fraser, a direct link back to Scott's earlier 90's work and sound around the darker realms of techno and harder-edged Chicago house. The EP title refers back to a favourite Donald Cammell film of Scott's from 88'. 'White of the Eye' on the A-side is an 11 minute extended mix of the lead cut. Silent Servant on remix duties delivers an amyl fuelled techno bomb landing somewhere in an 80's new york basement. Diving deeper on B2 it features Atlanta resident Claire Elise Tippins on vocals.

Extraordinary Lives
Review: London's fledgling Lobster Theremin imprint has a knack for picking up new and exciting talent from the shadows of the underground, and the label returns with the third black label series by mystery man, Reflec. "Track 1" is a dancefloor monster made up of deliciously analogue synth stabs and an altogether dubby sort of feel. On the flip, "Pad Acid", as you'd expect, whirls and squeaks its way across pounding kicks and sci-fi pads, while "Extraordinary Lives" is similar to the A-side albeit funkier and a little lighter around the edges. A gorgeous lil' EP and it's one hell of a tip!

Review: The rise of Ilian Tape has been piloted by Dario and Marco Zenker with a steady assurance, so it makes perfect sense for the brothers to helm the first long player project from the Munich label. Immersion is a vibrant, atmospheric stroll through their various influences and inspirations with plenty to admire amongst the ten tracks. There is the bustling, leftfield breakbeat techno of "TSV WB" and pounding "High Club" (a no-nonsense dancefloor assault blessed with occasional eyes-closed chords), as well as sublime tech-jazz of "Cornel 21" and pitched-down junglisms of "Innef Runs". Interestingly, there are also a number of crusty, distorted ambient interludes, with "Erbquake" sounding particularly potent.

Segue One
Segue One (Aubrey's mix)
Review: Earlier this year, long established techno producers Patrice Scott and Chris Mitchell joined forces as Modular One. Initially, it was for the one-off "Quasar" track on Scott's own Sistrum imprint. Here, they deliver another message from the stars in the shape of "Segue 1", a typically deep, attractive and far-sighted composition that fixes deep space chords and winding melodies to an arpeggio-driven Motor City groove. On the flip, British techno veteran Aubrey delivers his own take on "Segue 1", playing down the arpeggio bassline while emphasizing the original's classic Detroit techno elements. It's a dreamy, immersive and thoroughly atmospheric interpretation.

Quad By Quad (4:47)
Serpentina's Lust
Dogenzaka (No Love, Nuff Lube)
Senza Nome
Review: Funkineven's Apron label has risen to extraordinary heights in the last couple of years, releasing a myriad of new exciting talent such as Greg Beato and Brassfoot, of course. The later returns to the London-based imprint after his debut alongside Lord Tusk last year, this time with a solo four-track of warm, tape-saturated house music. "Quad By Quad" is a hissing MPC beat jam, while Serpentina's Lust" is an aggressive floor stomper featuring a rather mouth-watering set of drums and percussion. On the B-side, "Dogenzaka (No Love, Nuff Lube)" might well be the jewel of the lot, where a futuristic, pseudo-acid bassline rolls its way through old-school melodies. Furthermore "Senza Nome" heads into total abstraction thanks to its cinematic synths and squeals. What a corker, this is warmly recommended.

Alienated 5 A
Alienated 5 B
Review: Oh yes, Milton Bradley puts his spacesuit back on and launches the fifth instalment of the Alien Rain series, the man's 303-fuelled project. Compared to his output on the Do Not Resist The Beat series, Alien Rain is more immediate, less contained and built exclusively with the dancefloor in mind - we like! "Alienated 5 A" is a body-jacking clusterbomb with a fine, acidic sequenced bassline and plenty of drum machine action, while "Alienated 5 B" is more similar to the previous Alien Rain gear, where hypnotic shots of 303 push and pull into a deep wormhole of hi-hats, snares and kick drums. Cop it, they usually don't last very long!

Tragedy Of The Commons
Silent Money
Fundamentals
Review: Blackest Ever Black boss Kiran Sande recently described "Tragedy of the Commons", the 17-minute lead cut on Felix K's belated label debut, as "exemplary Berlin noir". In many ways, it's an apt description. A murky, claustrophobic collage of looped Tangerine Dream style synth lines, dystopian field recordings and fuzzy bass, it's a particularly atmospheric snapshot of Felix K's immersive, off-kilter aural world. "Silent Money" continues the otherworldly feel, delivering post trip-hop rhythms and thunderous sub-bass. Finally, "Onar Anxiety "delivers a thrillingly dark, paranoid and tribal remix of "Fundamentals", with voodoo drums helping propel the bleak techno groove towards the horizon.

Ffantasi (6:47)
Nuuk (8:43)
Review: The second release on Nathan Fake's collaborative label venture finds the Border Community regular flying solo with a set of heartfelt experiments that head into new territory for the ever-roaming electronica artist while sounding undeniably like him. "Fortune Bru" works around a simple, delicate electro beat pattern as a basis for rich and shimmering synth lines to unfurl, while "Nuuk" takes a moodier route into its own harmonious reverie. The chords slowly open out with a gleefully grainy texture to them, drifting into ever more expressive territory that rivals a certain Aphex Twin for sheer jaw-dropping melodic grace. In its simplicity it makes for one of Fake's most immediate and charming releases to date.

Patience (Lewis Fautzi remix)
Review: "Patience" is Finitude Musics fourth release. Once again label boss Marcel Heese teamed up with d_func. aka Alexander Kowalski. Most people will surely remember his classics on labels such as Tresor Records or Kanzleramt. The Jeff Mills influence can't be denied on the A-Side. Remix on B-Side comes from up-and-coming Portuguese producer Lewis Fautzi (Soma, Figure) who has turned "Patience" into a 303-laden floorbomb.

Strategic Deception
Frequency Is Time
Razors Edge
Razors Edge (Sg Lazers For Lunch version)
Review: Oh yes, the Ghost touches base on Russian Torrent Versions for the fifteenth instalment of the LIES off-shoot series, and boy are we happy to welcome him and his vicious beat-making back to our turntables. Ranging from jacking acid cuts to EBM-like jams, the EP is anything but docile. "Strategic Deception" is a menacing 303 monster, "Frequency Is Time" sounds like the inside of a deep space wormhole, while "Razor's Edge" - arguably the winner of the lot - is all kick drums and doom. The Sg Lazers For Lunch version chucks in a few breaks, a dash of distortion and turns things really ugly. A total pile driver and a fine addition to this already stellar catalogue.

Review: As part of longstanding no wave duo Naked On The Vague, murky girl group Knitted Abyss and extraterrestrial drone project Half High, Lucy Phelan has been a critical force in the Sydney DIY scene for over 10 years. Under the solo veil of Lucy Cliche, she annihilates with these four wavey techno tracks that honour her noise and punk ethos. With pounding drum sequences, draining synths and emotionless vocals echoing Cosey Fanni Tutti, her dark dreams sabotage our calculations of modern dance while demonstrating how physicality and the ethereal can interact.

Low Art (4:06)
Review: Serra represents the debut release on Impasse, a new platform launched by Livity Sound artist Asusu for "experimentation, both within the framework of techno and house as well as music that falls outside these constraints". Evidently a concurrent concern to his role in Livity Sound, Asusu mans the first release on Impasse with Serra a fine four track primer for what we can expect as the label develops. The rolling, brukked up grooves of the title track will immediately resonate with fans of Livity Sound, whilst the remainder of the record finds Asusu experimenting with textures shorn of beats. A very promising first release for Impasse!

Free Fall
Crab Jerk
Review: After the imprint debuted with a split release from Shady P and The Friend, Kris Wadsworth's Breed imprint turns to Mr G for a record steeped in all the trusty, quality traits you expect of Colin McBean. It's a particularly slender affair on the A side, as "Free Fall" works around a minimalistic loop suited to the most drawn out of late night techno mixes, with some choice timpanis thrown in for good measure. "Crab Jerk" meanwhile turns the heat up with one of those sensual chord / vocal interplays that no-one can do quite like the original Mr G.

Review: For their latest trip into the netherworld of electronic music, Den Haag crew Bakk has turned to local boy Jeremiah R, who has previously impressed with decidedly analogue-heavy releases on Tabernacle, Enklav and Organic Analogue. Despite his Rotterdam roots, the producer seems more taken with the spacey punch and eccentric themes of Detroit techno and electro. This is particularly evident on the Drexciyan dystopia of "Weeds", and the intergalactic funk of "Bioluminescence". That said, his more straight up 4/4 offerings - the retro-futurist shimmy of "Melancholy Fish" and basement-bothering, acid-flecked chug of "Diving" - are equally as impressive.

Par Grindvik - "Stay In Wild"
Review: This new various artist release on Stockholm Limited comes brimming with North European talent, kicking off with Jesper Dahlback's The Persuader alias exploring haunting ambient pastures on "Pressure Relief". Jeroen Search and Dimi Angelis meanwhile have a more trancey, pulsing quality to their own beatless exploration, while Stefan Vincent enjoys two separate outings in which to deliver blissful new age drone and punchy techno respectively. Par Grindvik then finishes up the 12" with a taut, techy throwdown full of late night intensity in a neat foil to the elegant ambient tackle on the A side.

The Acid That Ate Bournemouth
Review: In case you didn't know, Chris Moss Acid is a dude from Bournemouth who makes music strictly on old Roland synths and drum machines, and not surprisingly, centering this passion for acid around the TB-303! After releasing on Jamal Moss' Mathematics and Net Lab, among others, Moss Acid turns up on Don't with these four new dancefloor drillers! "Acid 209" is a pretty straight affair featuring one mother of a kick, while "Shake Your But To The 101" sounds sits somewhere between big beat and breaks. Flipping over onto the B-side, "247 House" blasts out the squelching acid good and proper - alongside a pretty menacing artillery of analog percussion - and "The Acid That Ate Bournemouth" goes in for the kill with it's totally manic sonics and dancefloor mechanics. What a beast!
