Unofficial Jah VIP
Outta Endz VIP
Review: OOOF! Metalheadz come through with two absolutely brutal VIP versions of Dom & Roland cuts, pressed up JA style on 7" for proper dancehall selectors! First up is a VIP of "Unofficial Jah" last year's refix of Goldie's "Jah" by Dom which went down a hellish 2 step route to devastating effect; this new version amps up the sub pressure, weighs down those kicks and adds plenty of delay and dub. Any Metalheadz fam that locked into the label's Christmas podcast last year will know all about the "Outta Endz" VIP on the flip which is a masterpiece in unrelenting Jungle production. Do not sleep!

LSB - "Leave"
FD - "Ice 690"
Anile - "Depths"
Kid Drama - "What Used To Be"
Review: The Fourfit series from Soul:R gathers pace with a second release that is packed with label debuts as LSB, Anile, FD and Kid Drama all step up to deliver some high class productions for the contemporary drum and bass selectors. LSB commences proceedings on a soulful note with "Leave" and what follows offer another example of the label's diversity, with FD opting for a grittier approach on the dirty funker "Ice 690". Flip over and "Depths" finds Anile drawing the focus back on the soulful approach, though it's the taut groove and little Junglist edits that really impress with this production. Kid Drama ends matters on an undeniably blissful note with the abstract rhythmics of "What Used To Be".

Goliath (feat DRS)
The Artefact
Prometheus
Hotplate
Review: Russian D&B supremo Enei returns with his first full EP since his epic debut album Machines in late 2012. As you'd expect, it's yet another masterclass in solid rhythm and industrial strength sound design. "Goliath" opens the ceremony with a distinctive sermon from MC-du-jour DRS. As the title suggests, it's majestically monolithic. Further in we're bombarded with demonstrative dynamics; the techno-like loopiness of "Hotplate", the dramatic, rim-shot-striking tantalisation on "The Artefact" and the slimy, sludgy half-time twists on "Prometheus". Will Enei ever make a bad record? We somehow doubt it. Get to know.

Review: What Optiv & BTK don't know about stark sound design and the art of not compromising truly isn't worth knowing. This is evident in every single they release on labels as diverse as Dispatch, Renegade and Playaz. It was evident on their debut album Dirty Tricks and it's abundantly clear on this sophomore set Blackjack. Featuring the already massive "Shredder" and the neuro-edged star-gazer "Nemesis", the duo are up there with Noisia and Phace & Misanthrop in terms of dynamic production and ability to be hard-as-nails yet wholly accessible. Showing more signs of subverted funk than before ("Subterranean" and "Heart Shaped"), their playful brutality is balanced with more detail and skill than ever before. Incredible.

The Return Of...
Analogue Life
Review: Dave Simms and Dev Pandya's roving Nucleus & Paradox project has been running since the late '90s and featured on many of the great Drum & Bass labels in this time, including a 2005 drop for Metalheadz. Here they add the Metalheadz Platinum sublabel to the list with a two track stormer of the highest quality. "The Return Of..." is a classic example of Nucleus and Paradox's trademark break beats and sub bass approach, rolling out the Think break over a hefty rave bass line with an expertise that few can match. On the B Side "Analogue Life" offers a more restrained take on the pair's approach and it's a fairly menacing production to boot.

Command Strange - "Rock Steady" (Lenzman remix)
REDS - "Meraki"
Review: A bona fide Dutch institution, Fokuz have repped the Netherlands in D&B since 1999. And they show no signs of stopping... This marks the start of six 12"s which will culminate in a massive double CD album later on this year. First up is current man-of-the-moment Lenzman who has found time during his album process to remix Command Strange's "Rock Steady". Twisting the emphasis on the pianos with a cool reverse technique that's complemented by arresting vocal samples, it's a case of true D&B beauty. Flip for Reds' "Meraki"; all flutes, keys and a sub bassline that seeps warmth and soul, it sums up the Fokuz spirit leaving no illusions to their clout, power and presence in the scene.

Review: Those Integral fans out there who indulged in last months 12" sampler for the Integral Select compilation will be like a kid let loose in a sweet shop at the sight of this vinyl edition, which packs four highlights across two slabs as well as gripping the full CD version. Having recently ended a label hiatus, Integral Select should find Artificial Intelligence pair Glenn Herweijer and Zula Warner reclaiming their place amongst D&B label royalty, effectively demonstrating how broad a hold they have on the genre as a style. The two plates feature three fresh remixes of classics from the Integral archives, with Alix Perez taking on Zero T's legendary "Refusal", and the heat continues with a Calibre tweak of Technicolour, Komatic and LSB's collab "Rotary Motion". Lenzman & Redeyes' 2009 liquid jazz anthem "Thieves In The Night" is reworked by Technimatic on the second plate and shares space with Scar's impressive Integral debut "Something From Nothing", a nasty concoction of heavy breaks and dirty funk basslines.

Just Can't Take (feat DRS)

Starz (feat Kevin King)
Move & Focus (feat Dan Stezo)
Review: Ever since his emergence back in 2007, Dutch producer Teije van Vliet has been working hard to provide Drum & bass with fresh, sparkling rollers blessed with that all important dark and dirty undercurrent as Lenzman. Given his prolific nature, it's surprising there hasn't been a Lenzman long player before now, so kudos to Metalheadz for ensnaring van Vliet in his Leiden studio long enough for him to lay down Looking At The Stars. This double plated vinyl version only holds four of the 17 tracks you'll find on the CD or digital edition but they are all certified rollers that will certainly pique the fancy of interested parties. The laidback delivery of DRS is the perfect foil for the smooth "Just Can't Take" whilst "Burner" delivers one of those deep basslines Lenzman produces so well. Grip the second plate and the Kevin King featuring Starz is the Dutchman in ascendant form, rubbing up nicely with the moody half stepper "Move & Focus

Tell Me Something (feat Detail)
The Gully
Ju Ken (feat Throwing Snow)
Review: Utopia bossman Mako steps up with three outrageously on-point cuts for the Metalheadz label. Each one slapping a different cheek of the dancefloor, we're flung from tearingly ugly rollers like "The Gully" to unique broken beat/jungle hybridisms on "Ju Ken" which comes with added input from the man like Throwing Snow featured. The main draw, however, will be "Tell Me Something" which sees Mako team up with Detail. Lush sense-popping synths blast spine-chilling chords and deep bass gurgles in every direction as it runs amok on a meticulous drum arrangement that never sits still. The truth is out there for those that seek it.

Review: Must grip double pack action from the Keysound crew here as UK producer Sully graces us with his first full release in some three years. A guest appearance on the debut album from E.m.m.a. last year reminded us how good a button pusher Sully was, and the eight track Blue finds him shifting focus away from the 2-step and footwork inspired sounds of his debut LP Carrier in favour of some Junglist excursions. Sully's expertise at classic break-based "rollage and choppage" is on full display across seven cuts here with fellow Keysound artist Logos chipping in with a beatless vapour dub of the title track. There's a looseness and rawness to much of the music here that will immediately hook anyone who is partial to a bit of Amen-based fun and games.

Battle Scars (feat Fourward Jakes)
Review: The inauguration of this Friction Versus series finds the Shogun Audio boss going back to his roots for a collection of collaborative cuts that are geared for a sole purpose: heady, heavyweight dancefloor abandonment. Lead track "Scatter" sees Friction teaming up with Total Science for a drum-heavy roller that shakes and rattles with infectious energy. "Battle Scars" proves to be just as deep an exercise in drum and bass and finds the Shogun main man working with label newcomers Fourward and it digs deep into the psyche of timeless drum and bass, no doubt helped by the distinctive tones of Jakes. Game over son.

Scott Allen - "Jah Is Coming"
Pixel - "Babylon"
Review: Marco Grijsen and Scott Allen's Soul Rebel label may have waited almost a year to come through with a new 12" but it was more than worth it! Allen himself is involved, splitting sides with Soul Rebel debutant Pixel, a UK based producer whose made waves with a recent split release with Malaky on the Expressions label. Allen pulls rank and lines Side A with "Jah Is Coming" which lives up to it's conscious Rastafari title, pairing vicious amen-lead rhythms with the occasional drop into a skanking sample. The vibe is retained by Pixel on the rolling "Babylon" which is in truth a bit more playful in execution.

Triangles
Review: Logistics returns with two startlingly crisp rollers for Hospital that represent his first solo productions in what seems like an eternity, and fully remind us why we fell in love with him in the first place. "Somersaults" is a bright and breezy cut laced with well processed vocal textures, overlapping synth hooks and that rich warm organ sound he's made his own in the past. "Triangles" is a more delicate affair ; with its sharp steppy beat and simple-but-deadly arpeggiated riff, close your eyes and you'll hear shades of Calibre. Welcome back Logistics!

Cold Spring (feat Robert Manos)
Addicted
Review: After a period of some three years, Swedish Drum & Bass exponent Seba graces BCEE's Spearhead Recordings with some new dancefloor ice. Sebastian Ahrenberg has of course been busy in this interim period, issuing his second album Identity and overseeing the rise of his own Secret Operations label. "Cold Spring" sees Ahrenberg once again collaborating with Robert Manos, whose hushed vocal delivery complements the brisk and jazzy atmospheric arrangement from Seba, but for us the real gem is wedged on the B Side and shows a different side to the Swede's production style. It's not clear who provides the vocal here, but she perfectly fits the rugged drums and superbly sequenced subby bass line. Big moves from Seba and Spearhead!

Paragon & Gremlinz - "Oranda"
Review: Here we find 31 doing what 31 do best... Delivering some serious dark. A creative collaborative masterpiece from emerging talent Paragon and Canadian producer Gremlinz, "Precipice" is a militant slice of dynamic minimalism; tribal rhythms, apocalyptic textures and a heady sense of ominous dread, it can hench all backs within a five mile radius. "Oranda" closes the show with an immense paranoid drone that smothers itself over sharp steppy beats that seem fine-tuned for Renegade Hardware. Timelessly nasty!

Archive
Review: Phantom Audio legend Digital returns with a demonstrative reminder of his heavyweight abilities and there's a unique vibe to "Shaka Zulu". A deeply tribal affair, it punctures with a dancehall drum arrangement that gives the groove heaps of space, allowing the dramatic bass textures to rip a clear riffy message. "Archive", meanwhile, is more like the traditional Digital you'll know from time: turbo-charged breakbeat science with icy pads and a bassline that slaps your chops so hard you can lose teeth just by holding the vinyl. For real.

Reds - "Showtime"
Review: The Fokuz anniversary celebrations just keep getting better and better... For their third in this sweet-15 series we're treated with two timeless, robust jams that surge deep into the D&B psyche. "Things", penned by founder Dreazz and Emery, comes with a loose jazzy swing and big filtered textures that are reminiscent of D&B's fertile chapters in the mid noughties. Reds' "Showtime", meanwhile, taps into the majesty of JB with a big funk hook that wouldn't have gone amiss on Hospital 15 years ago. Naturally both kill it. Birthdays have never been so banging.

Zero T & Script - "Guessing Games" (Bailey remix)
Scar - "Spectre"
Review: Originally released in 2010 on Zero T's now-defunct Footprints label, "Guessing Games" enjoys an update from an ambassador who really should be producing more than he does in Bailey. Adding a chubbier, full-bodied edge to the spiked out bass riff and more beef to the drums, it's a fine lesson in contemporisation. Meanwhile on B Survival and Script's SCAR project continues to develop its impressive CV with another ice-cold adventure into D&B's most timeless eeriest pastures. All alien noises and heavily layered bass textures, it's as nasty as it is understated. Clever.

Review: Double 12" dynamite from one of the most distinctive, genre-affirming imprints in D&B, the "Multiverse" EP sees some of the label's most notable characters and contributors colliding for four uncompromising co-lab creations. The title track is undiluted tribal drum drama, "Void" takes a classic rave vocal and sends it to groove galaxies previously unknown to man while the scratchy, savage "One At A Time" is just pure evil with added percussive punch. Finally "No Smer" closes the show with a slippery, glitchy riff that bumps, shuffles and switches with icy naughtiness. Just when you thought Renegade Hardware couldn't get any bolder!

Review: There really has been a wealth of releases from Metalheadz themed around Lenzman's triumphant and long awaited album Looking At The Stars, and it seems like they are in no mood to stop now that the LP is finally out. The latest 12" from the label sees them grant Jubei's remix of the sublime roller "Empty Promise" a much needed vinyl issue, after it first emerged digitally earlier this month and ended the CD edition of Looking At The Stars. In the hands of the Metalheadz regular, "Empty Promise" is given a stunning revision, all washes of sound and big, swooning basslines, whilst "Lazy Dub" is a big, delicious slice of sparkling Lenzman atmos with huge bass and tickety-boo percussion.

Review: Well, what can we say about Venetian Snares? Aaron Funk has made some of the most inspirational electronic music since the mighty AFX and if you haven't heard of them you should be ashamed...Jokes aside, the diversity and creativity of the outfit is unstoppable, spewing out bursts of energy from nowhere and like no-one else can. They land on Planet Mu, of course, and it's one of the wackiest collages of beats and melodics that we've heard in donkeys. The opening track, "10th Opening Of Winnipeg" is a perfect encapsulation of their style, where gentle waves of melodic euphoria are torn apart and spat out by tempestuous slices of enraged breakbeats and noxious sonics. If you're into your weird shit, look no further. The Snares back in action!

Review: Brand new vinyl-only imprint Horrific follow up last month's launch release from dRamatic & dbAudio with this delightful double-sider. According to label legend, Ego Scene is a very well established producer operating under a secret alias. Names are by the by, the music speaks for itself: "Hold On" is a lush liquid stepper with jazz-tinged keys and a lavish double bassline tickling the groove's underbelly. "Aiden's Tune", meanwhile, is a perfectly executed homage to the formative hardcore days.
