Convexations
Falling Again
Review: Considering the rich vein of form Al Bleek has enjoyed as Boddika of late, Martyn's 3024 seems the perfect launch pad for Jon Convex - the solo endeavour of Bleek's Instra:mental cohort Damon Kirkham. Convexations is purportedly the first of a raft of releases across a number of labels for the Convex moniker and you can commence finger licking now, as the two productions here are perfect breakout material. The title track sets the tone, commencing in dramatic fashion before quickly settling into menacing Detroit electro pulse of rattling percussion, sputtering chords dipped with intensity and uneasy vocal flourishes. Complementing this is "Falling Down" with tight percussive rhythms, drowned out warm vocal swirls and rich sounding bass patterns - the end result being much more than the sum of its parts, especially when the array of thick chord washes join the party!

Hats Off
Heavy Hitter
Rigging
Sea Sick
Review: Never one to rest, when Skream isn't rocking stadiums as part of the Croydon triumvate Magnetic Man or tweeting amusing videos of drunken Glaswegian DJs he's back behind the knobs dropping dubplate after dubplate. This double pack of Disfigured Dubs presents four of his most prized WMDs that rides the gamut of Skream's talent. Proceedings kick off in killer fashion with "Hats Off", a euphoric old skool slayer filled with jungle breaks, ebullient piano flourishes, intermittent acid squiggles and the odd Mike Skinner sample. Complementing this is the punishing flexstep drama of "Heavy Hitter" - perhaps the most apt track title in some time. Equalling that in the screw face stakes is the jagged industrial sub bass excursions of "Rigging"!

Bass
Rollercoasters Of The Heart
So Cruel
Review: After seriously impressing with the debut sounds of Andy Mac last time round, Bristol imprint Punch Drunk step it up a notch further with this monumental release from Bass Clef. The local hero turned Hackney import graces our shelves with his first release in 2011 and it's totally been worth the wait, unveiling the rather glorious sounds of "Rollercoasters Of The Heart". There's an undeniably throwback nod to the euphoric days of rave gone by thanks to the swirls of lysergia tinged stabs and stretched out vox, but it's how Bass Clef marries them to a crisp groove of rolling sub bass and crisp off kilter house drums that has us hooked. Complementing this, "So Cruel" brings the mood down markedly, revolving around a half time swagger and bouncing subs dipped in purple menace which are the perfect foil for the requisite looped up chanteuse. It's the searing synth flourishes that jettison through the track without announcement that lift "So Cruel" to somewhere near the title track in our affections.

Natalia's Song
Review: Zomby remains such a singular and interesting figure within the music industry that the mooted legal kerfuffle surrounding "Natalia's Song" led James Holden to recently remark (via Twitter) with more than a degree of humour that it was perhaps the first instance of a European intellectual stealing from a Russian. This one sided ten inch comes ahead of the producer's keenly anticipated new album for the 4AD imprint, sampling and stuttering Russian Star Factory singer Irina Dubtzova and wrapping her voice around skeletal programming and heart melting melodies. Housed in deluxe packaging and first heard closing out Mary Anne Hobbes' tenure on Radio One, it's a little slice of niceness this.

Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking (Falty DL remix)
Review: Mr Parkes primes his stadium sized vocal dubsteppah "Sleepwalking" just in time for the summer season of festivals - we can totally imagine that Jameela girl from T4 vibing to this at the side of the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury this weekend. Big sweeps of cinematic orchestration are the perfect setting for the dramatic vocal turn from Linche and it all rides along on the back of a juggernaut sized half step kick. Of much more interest to the Juno ear is the accompanying remix from Falty DL which twists the track into a deftly layered house swing accompanied by icy synth flourishes, buzzed out bass stabs and some nifty pitching on the vocal element.

A Devil Lay Here
Basquiat
Review: Ahead of a highly anticipated album on 4AD, the endlessly enigmatic Zomby serves up this intriguing 7" serving as a teaser alongside the already well loved "Natalia's Song", which also dropped this week). The subtle melodic shuffle of "A Devil Lay Here" is an instant highlight, with glassy textures and bleeps held together in the most fragile, beautiful manner. The smoky piano of "Basquiat" on the flip makes this a damn near irresistible release - can the album hurry up and arrive please?

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for one-time Flying Lotus collaborator and experimental hip-hop protege Sam 'Samiyam' Baker. Since last working with Fly-Lo in 2009, he's seen his pal's star rise, while he's all but disappeared off the radar. This long-anticipated second album should help. Expanding a little on his glitchy, 8-bit formula, Sam Baker's Album sees the Michigan-based producer whip through a kaleidoscopic selection of beat sketches and off-kilter instrumentals. At times he comes on like Dam Funk after a few too many blunts, at other like Fly-Lo or Slugabed after a few too many sherbets. It's a mix that makes for an unusual but largely entertaining full-length.

Shudder
Wolf Moon
Review: Some worldwide dubstep excursions as New Zealander Crushington teams up with Dutch trio Black Sun Empire for a dose of post apocalyptic menacers. Heavily cinematic in tone, "Shudder" arises from the ether into a paranoia-inducing melange of skittering textures rippling over jagged demonic subs, augmented by intermittent bursts of g-funk synths. Whispered vocal samples appear during the drop into nothingness which only adds to the rising atmosphere of danger. On the flip "Wolf Moon" begins in a similarly menacing fashion before unfurling into a heavily dubbed skankstep flex that comes stamped with gunfinger potential!

Hydraulic
Overdose
Review: British Columbia dubstep lynchpin Datsik finally unleashes the dizzying industrial half step shudders of "Hydraulic", securing another crucial drop for Excision's Rottun imprint. Arising from the mechanical mist, Datsik displays ninja like agility in pitch shifting the sub bass rhythms that swing with real groove (all too absent in the more aggro step circles) around the killer "High Powered Hydraulics" vocal hook. On the flip "Overdose" neatly implements SNES bleeps into a tightly wound mid range flex that shifts through various rhythms all packed with gut punching intent.
