Review: The 21st Century has been quiet thus far for New Order, with only two full albums to date, and only an out-takes compilation in the last decade. Moreover, 'Music Complete' marks their first album to date without founding bassist Peter Hook, and the return of Gillian Gilbert to the ranks. Yet from this turbulence and inertia they've somehow managed to create a collection of songs that rank as their strongest set since 'Technique' in 1989. VIbrant, upbeat and colourful, yet driven by the same mix of electronic experimentation and effortless pop suss that characterised their '80s heyday, 'Music Complete' is the sound of a timeless and unique force newly revitalised.

Review: Return to Disorder is the new label from Hamburg producer and DJ Helena Hauff, known for her dark brand of EBM and electro-infused music and without doubt one of the best selectors currently playing in clubs. The act responsible for the debut release from Return to Disorder is Children Of Leir, a Leicester-based psych rock outfit whose influences come from "mystical horror". Not the sort of music one would immediately associate with Hauff's floor pummelling DJ sets and a hint that Return To Disorder will be dictated by Hauff's tastes as opposed to a need to satisfy the beat. The four tracks present here are a fine introduction to Children of Leir, with their feedback-laden sound perfectly enhanced by the mastering skills of Pete 'Sonic Boom' Kember.

Review: The Philadelphia troubadour is on typically dazed and understated form on this sixth solo effort, yet does nothing to dissuade all or any observers from crowning him the modern king of slacker introspection. A singer-songwriter in the most old-fashioned and engaging of ways, his earthy craft is showcased in a collection of songs that veer engagingly from paranoia to overconfidence, and from wry cynicism to cheerful optimism, Strangest of all however, for all the nods to the likes of Dylan and Lennon stylistically, Vile never sounds like an artist beholden to retro fetishism, more one whose melodic skills and heavy-lidded charm captivate on their own terms, all the while cloaked in his trademark narcotic mid-afternoon haze of a sound.

Dry The Rain (6:04)
I Know (4:00)
B+A (6:36)
Dogs Got A Bone (5:54)
Review: Although Regal themselves had reissued a number of The Beta Band originals not too long ago, Rhino has come through this Autumn with a new bunch of represses from the band's '90s output. Champion Versions, alongside The Patty Patty Sound, is one of the outfit's defining moments, not least because of "Dry The Rain", a song which is instantly recognizable in everyone's mind thanks to those lazy, wailing vocals, chuggy drums and melting trumpets. Although that tune is clearly the winner on this EP, "I Know" is equally creative thanks to its broken shreds of percussion and ethereal guitar, whereas "B+A" is a true stoner rock number, and "Dogs Got A Bone" showcases the band's inherent folk sensibilities. Gorgeous.

Review: Grouper's Liz Harris has made her name over the last decade with an evocative and wintry sound that is unique in its desolate minimalism. Moreover, while it wouldn't be every artist that would use a glacial yet abrasive dreampop power-trio as a way to blow off steam, this would seem superficially to be exactly what she's doing with Helen, her project in cahoots with members of Eternal Tapestry and Eat Skull. Yet 'The Original Faces' is a rare treat, replete with the hazy rapture of 4AD records of old yet suffused with the abstract sleight-of-hand that could have come from no-one else but Harris.

Push It Out (5:21)
It's Over (3:53)
Dr. Baker (4:06)
Needles In My Eyes (4:39)
Review: 1998's Los Beta Bandidos was the perfect addition to The Beta Band's catalogue when it was released. While their previous two EP's played and experimented with stoner rock and folk, their third release was deeper, more traditionally musical but nonetheless coated in the band's quirky outsiderism. "Push It Out" contains the group's familiar vocals except that their surrounded by a jazzier framework, and the same can be said for "It's Over", a deep little number with a heavy folk twist. On the B-side, "Dr Baker" is a beatless hymn backed by a lonesome piano before being eaten up by delays and deformed guitar riffs, while "Needles In My Eyes" is a defining indie tune for the more pensive souls. Another smacker of a reissue; hats off.

Review: Battles, the NYC art rock group, have been around since 2002 and they've also featured on Warp's catalogue for over ten years. The trio are back with a new album on the London imprint, twelve tracks of stoner jams coated in a fine layer of electronic oddity. Much like their previous releases, Battles are minimal on the vocals, preferring instead to speak through their guiatrs, drums and synthesizers; our selections from the LP have to be "Summer Simmer" for its driving groove and almost Bollywood chimes, the slow electronic waves of "Cacio E Pepe", "Dot Com's" percussive energy, and the jazzy influences of the sublime "Tricentennial". Pure class that should not be slept on. Welcome back, boys!

Inner Meet Me (6:15)
The House Song (7:13)
The Monolith (15:44)
She's The One (8:16)
Review: Originally out in 1997 on the utterly independent Regal imprint, The Patty Patty Sound represented the true core of The Beta Band, and of the experimental folk scene as a whole. The Scottish band, although largely operating on the outskirts of commercial success, have always had a cult following of diggers who either scouted their breaks of their general mash up of different styles and influences. "Inner Meet Me", for instance, takes an indie kind of vibe and twists it to its very limits with the help of weird and wonderful electronic manipulations, while "The House Song" shakes its way across a disco beat and comes out the other end with a trip hop groove. On this killer EP you'll also find some downtempo moments on "The Monolith", and more classic rock sounds via "She's The One", served with a distinct folk flavor, of course. Unmissable and timeless; a truly recommended piece of wax for your collection.

Review: Yumi Zouma hail from Christchurch, New Zealand, and are purveyors of a brand of sparkling pop that transcends retro chic with both seductive melody and electronic invention to spare. The release of this compendium of their two EPs thus far seems slightly misplaced at the start of autumn, as you'll be hard pushed to find many records more summery than these marriages of slick R&B production vaues, soulful slink and disco hedonism. If these lazy and luminous tracks belong in any kind of club they'd be one on a beach, as it's hard to avoid thoughts of warm tropical evenings while basking in this collection.
