  1. Ayahuasca
  2. Solar Heart
  3. Nothing Odd
  4. Broken Spell
Review: After establishing themselves as a party in the crowded waters of Berlin, the Sol Asylum crew are transferring their organizational talents on to wax with this first release on their new label, featuring a hitherto unknown artist called OdD. The tone is a deep and mysterious one across all four tracks on this EP, as pads linger fuzzy in the background and tones pulse through delay units to create a very tangible sense of place. "Ayahuasca" makes the most of its titular premise to lay on organic and tripped-out sonic details in a deep house environment, while "Solar Heart" gets into a more jazzy kind of reflection with its pondering keys dominating the mix. "Nothing Odd" is a more streamlined minimal track with the pre-requisite interlocking percussion and found sounds falling into a neat and tidy cycle.

  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
Review: The mysterious Owl imprint returns for another round of reduced grooves and thoughtful textures that look beyond dancing concerns to a more arty kind of house music premise. There's definitely a strung-out jazz influence hanging over "Track 1" as typified by the woozy horn samples, but it's matched by subdued strangeness from the additional synth work. "Track 2" is quite a different beast, getting into a tricky electro beat over which to fly a spread of vocal snatches and some oddball bass synth action with an end result that comes on like a modern-day answer to The Art Of Noise.

  1. This Ultimate Dare (Christian Burkhardt Fast Forward mix)
  2. Sun Rise Way (Hreno & The Mole MHMD mix)
Review: Focusing specifically on one release from 2013, Djebali commissions a pair of remixes to bring other acts into his self-focused label project, starting with Christian Burkhardt and his version of "The Ultimate Dare". It's a heads down affair with stout house drums and a dirty synth hook for the later end of the evening. Hreno and The Mole meanwhile take a different approach when remixing "Sun Rise Way", getting into a deep down chug that speaks to their twitchy musical personalities while keeping a disco locomotion to the track at all times. In between the kinky samples there's time for some warming chords to keep things from getting too alien.

  2. 9T8 (Benny Ill club remix)
Review: Dusky's first single of 2014 sees them return to the School Records label set up in late 2012 by Swamp 81 label manager Katie Thiebaud, Loefah and ATG affiliate Jan Francis which Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman inaugurated. As you'd expect 9T8 is up there with the club constructions we've come to expect from crew like Boddika and Joy O. Rigid beats, a slinky, tonal bassline, and hand waving hi-hats complete "9T8" which Benny III only touches with some extra acid squeaks and cut vocals in his quick-fix-remix.

  1. You Know My Eyes
  2. Don't Stop
  3. Jus Sameen
  4. Jammin'
Review: After the Loopdeville record kicked the label off with some serious heat, Delooped do it once again with Pepp, bringing some creative flair to spartan house tracks through tricky samples, off-kilter effects and brooding atmospheres. The title track is all seedy tension, from the dirty bassline to the cracked menace of the titular vocal sample, but there's also a plethora of detail flying around the mix at the same time. "Don't Stop" is a more technoid affair that keeps the delirious collage approach up, while "Jus Sameen" takes the same trick and weaves in some psychedelia to soften the edges of the multiple sound sources. "Jammin'" gets into a curious adaptation of the New Jersey house sound that shows the retro pretenders where to pay homage and where to push things forward.

Review: ** Repress ** Almost twelve months after he first debuted on Clone Jack For Daze, L-Vis 1990 returns to the Rotterdam label with a 12" that features the first new material under his Dance System alias. First introduced on a mix for DIS magazine that featured a glut of the producer's Chicago influences like Paul Johnson and DJ Deeon, original material under the Dance System name takes a similarly Dance Mania influenced approach. Four tracks deep, this EP demonstrates the New York-based Night Slugs CEO has the energising functionality of Ghetto House down to a tee and look out for "Move It" which sees Connolly draw a direct line to Dance Mania's lineage. Here the producer teams up with Jammin Gerald whose titular vocal hook is thrown about with the same gleeful abandon as the rusted key line

Review: It's been a long time, 22 years in fact, but finally Detroit champion Terence Parker makes his way on to Carl Craig's Planet E, and he does so in style. His Life On The Back 9 album is Parker's first full length since his 1998 LP, Strong Songs Album, and it sees the loved DJ and producer dominating more Rhodes, drum machines and synthesisers. He's create a cohesive album of classic American house music to appease the sweaty underground club ("Saved Forever" and "Pentecost" and "God he Is") to the Ibiza podiums ("Finally" and "Hiding In Your Love") to more chilled out environments ("The Friend I Lost" and "The Back 9"). Terrence Parker is back people!

  3. Allez Ally (Shonky remix)
  4. Allez Ally (El Prevost original mix)
Review: Recently highlighted as one of the labels cultivating The Future Sound of Clapton, the long running Third Ear come through here with a release that's more Future Sounds of Paris! Returning to El Prevost's Ash EP, the label commission Apollonia pair Dan Ghenacia and Shonky to rework "Alley Ally" from El Prevost and D.Ham. In original form the track was already fairly warped - and indeed opened Fabric 70 from Apollonia - but is given a whole new lease of life on this set of remixes. Harder and funkier, Ghenacia and Shonky's respective efforts are complemented by a new "Deptford Dub" take from Prevost himself. Those mistaking dub version for instrumental be warned, this is dub in the traditional sense, heavy on the delay! The OG version is also included for those who missed first time round!

  3. Being Square
  4. Square Dub
Review: The first release for both Sensual Rec. and Dario Reimann is a minimally and dour EP of stripped Euro-centric grooves. It's perhaps "Square Dub" and "Take Four" which best present this, both harbouring so much crackly nothingness that without their soft pitter-patter beats they would still be danceable. "Money count Dub" on the other hand is driven by its drums, percussion and acoustic-style atmospheres, while a phase-affected "Being Square" is hypnotic house made petite.

  1. We Can Pretend
  2. Now We're Here
Review: Described by Kompakt as "a somnambulistic two-tracker that delivers more bang for the buck", John Tejada returns to the Cologne label with a new 12" primed for the dancefloor. We Can Pretend shows the LA-based Tejada might be looking to apply the new found interest in modular synthesis shown on his 2012 LP The Predicting Machine to the muscular techno he's founded his reputation on. Taking the form of two vocal tracks, one featuring former collaborator Kimi Recor and the other Morgan Alexander, the abiding feeling you get from the title track is 'perhaps this is what James Holden and John Talabot collaborating would sound like?'. There's a subtle poppishness to "We Can Pretend" that doesn't detract from the masterful sequencing, whilst "Now We're Here" is Tejada in classicist pumping US house mode.

Review: As they hit release number six Chicago's Episodes label reach out beyond their regular circle of producers and invite a fellow Windy City dweller to extol the virtues of outboard gear. Compared to the rough edges of Ike Release, Hakim Hurphy and the label as a whole, G Marcell's approach is a smoother one, allowing plenty of drifting synth lines and gently tempered drums into the mix for a worthy take on yearning techno and homespun house music. From the gentler shades of "I Be Damn" to the jarring jack of "Strange Blu Fish" there is a great focus on futuristic synth lines for all times and places, and it gives G Marcell a character all of his own.

  1. Ride With You (Italo Johnson remix)
  2. Ride With You (original mix)
  3. Ride With You (Darren Emerson dub)
  4. Ride With You (Mike Dehnert remix)
Review: As a new project for long-serving house trooper Darren Emerson, The White Lamp seems to be picking up pace swiftly following the well-received singles for Sonar Kollektiv and Futureboogie. Making the move to the ever-more house-orientated Hotflush, this latest single sees Emerson and vocalist Peter Josef get their track "Ride With You" re-examined by a host of characters. First up is Italo Johnson, exclusive to the vinyl with his finely toned machine-driven remix, before the original version sidles up in all its woozy, hazy bombast. Emerson turns out a more club-ready "Dub" that works in some solid drums and lets the simmering vocals swirl in a pot of delay and reverb, leaving it to Mike Dehnert to drop a sparse and cheekily funking abstraction that usurps the warm tones for a cold bite.

  3. Neptun
Review: The ever-productive Pleasure Zone imprint is on a constant quest to unearth lesser-known talents in the field of minimal house and techno, and they're at it once again with the lean throwdown that arises from the partnership of Marc Philip and former Jacuzzi Boys collaborator Nils Weimann. Opening cut "18m 19n" is pure functionality, dropping a jazz-inflected beat and using just the smallest of samples for decoration over an unflinching set of drums. "Lost" meanwhile gets into a more twitchy mindset with its searching bass and delicate slithers of percussion, placing the track in an immersive hinterland caught somewhere between dancing and listening. "Neptun" rounds the EP off by doffing its cap to Pleasure Zone's love of paper thin breakbeats spoken in minimal terms, getting locked in a hypnotic cycle of the finest kind.

Review: Kompakt revisit Cupid's Head, last year's The Field long player from Axel Willner for CUPID'S HEAD REMIXE I, a classy remix package in the company of Vatican Shadow, Barker & Baumecker and Sonns. Hospital Productions boss Dominick Fernow is up first and offers a serene take on "Cupid's Head" that's a notable contrast to some of his work as Vatican Shadow but is no less impressive, whilst Ostgut duo Barker & Baumecker take a more kinetic approach, adding micro breakbeats and a gradually swelling sense of glistening texture. Split Secs' Alexandre Mouracade dons his solo SONNS outfit for a wonderful final 9 minute take filled with cooing vocal harmonies and a warm bassy undercurrent that is toyed with playfully by the drum fills.

Review: Long time stalwarts of the minimal techno scene, Easy Changes are a trusted source of freaked and tweaked cuts heavy that shirk fatter kinds of production in favour of dense sample layering and immersive atmospheres. "Sochiny Lomehi" has a post-punk thread running through its veins, all loping live bass, raw drum fills and occasional droning brass pared down to an elemental levels and reworked for an out-of-hours dancefloor. "Video Learning" is a more purposeful mover, snaking forwards on a more mechanised rhythm while playful flecks of synth patter all over the mix. Bruno Pronsato delivers an appropriately pared down remix of the title track, leaving it to third original cut "Urban Transport" to round the EP off with a focused and enchanting drum track.

Review: A man with many guises, Frits Wentink (or Felix Lenferink, or Presk, or many more) makes his way over to Wolfskuil to further espouse his distinctinve brand of bouncy deep house across three tracks with their own twists on the sound he has been shaping since first emerging in 2011. "Fluffy Tit" has a hooky blend of jazzy chords and slim guitar licks that ride over a deceptively chunky rhythm section that hits hard without dulling the nimble skip of the groove. "Zeitus" takes a marginally more stripped approach that lets the drums and bass take the lead while a selection of vocal hums and murmurs form the subtle melodic content. "Amasa" whips another ice-cold melody out of thin air, this time running it around a stiff beat before switching into a more limber kind of house that plays on all Wentink's skills.

Review: After making itself known to the world through an extremely limited white label release that featured the original mix on both sides, Amanic deem their brooding vocal cut ready for a full release, bundled with a host of remixes from obtusely named producers. While the original sports the romance of growling synth pop, the remixes move through all kinds of flavours. The Jimmi Hendrik "Not Deep Enough Remix" heads into more streamlined tech house territory shot through with a cheeky early 90s Leftfield tint for some character. Micrologue's "Back To '07" version maximises on the vocal and creates an anthemic swoon of a backdrop for all kinds of hands in the air action.
