Voodog (part 1)
Voodog (part 2)
Review: Making a rare excursion outside of his Perlon familiarities, Ricardo Villalobos contributes to Einzelkind's Proper Traxx imprint with two upfront groovers that keep the energy levels up without compromising on the minimal maven's hyper-focused attention to detail, not to mention his love of a cheeky sample or two. The rhythm stays consistent on both sides, shuffling in a micro house arrangement for lovers of twitchy funk everywhere, while the oddball speech and licks from recognisable disco classics keep things interesting in the midst of the extended grooves. This is as DJ-friendly as you could ever wish contemporary Villalobos to be, and it should keep stripped down dancefloors shaking long into the morning.

Voluspa
Behind The Black Meadow
Review: It's been a little while since a fresh injection of refined minimal techno was issued from Vlad Caia, but now the Romanian stalwart is back with a fresh pair of subtle gems for Amphibia, with whom he dropped the Projections EP back in 2012. "Voluspa" is a cyclical workhorse powered by undulating bass synths and swirling pads with a decidedly cosmic flavour to them, working just enough dubby flourishes into the mix to keep things fluid and warm. "Behind The Black Meadow" by contrast takes a slender funk to task with the finest slithers of percussion and a yearning line in melodics as expressed through heavy doses of filtering for a truly subconscious slice of micro house.

Ignus Fatuus (Verrina & Ventura remix)
Ignus Fatuus
Review: With a fast-rising catalogue of next-level minimal breakbeat jams, the Body Parts label has been doing a great service to the Russian scene while reaching all over for just the right kind of wares. Following a release for Broquade, Oshana more than fits the bill for the label with a healthy line in stripped down and immersive rhythms perfect for strung out and drawn out mixes. "I See Through You" piles on a dense and top-end-rich drum loop with some sensual vocals with uptempo urgency and dubbed out moodiness in equal measure, while "Indiscretions" is clearly more aimed towards the more mellow end of the micro house spectrum. Verrina and Ventura turn out a loopy remix of "Ignus Fatura" before the original finishes the EP off in fine ethereal form.

Nu Zau - "Cumse Cuvine"
Loopdeville - "Piance"
Review: Last year Moscow Records set up sub-label Moss Co and each release so far has introduced a new set of artists. For this third release it's Nu Zau, aka ?tefan Gabriel Zamfir and Loopdeville, aka D Zlatinov. Nu Zau debuted on Fear Of Flying in 2012 and his 2013 was prolific with seven releases added to his name. He provides an 11-minute drum track, "Cumse Cuvine", that's filled with kooky and super minimal, squeaks, tweets and vocal samples; a fine production. Loopdeville's kick drum on "Piance" in comparison to Zau's A-side is standout, and here he provides a cold and moody track designed for those deeper moments of the night. It's the London-based producer third release after debuting in 2013 with two 12"s, one of which, Phantasmagoria, inaugurated new label Delooped.

Icaros
Inland Sickness
Review: For long, deep sessions of mellow techno and deep house, few other labels seem to do it as well as the Birdsmakingmachine crew. This sixth release feels like the most accomplished 12" yet from the collective despite the fact there are only two tracks; it's certainly the most colourful looking with a full colour sleeve used for the first time! The A-side production "Icaros" is as flighty as the title suggests yet still retains a laid back groove with plenty of dubby fx that give it a slight subaquatic feel. "Inland Sickness" comes across as slightly more upbeat, with subtle chords and tones combining to offer a more housey alternative to the A Side's minimal approach.

Nobody Loves Bishopgate (Vera remix)

Review: Though it was founded last year, the label branch of London promoters Half Baked seems like it's had an injection of ingenuity in 2014 with this JC EP from resident Robin Ordell their third release this year following Mike Shannon and Enrico Mantini drops. Having featured on the inaugural split artist 12" that Half Baked released, it's nice to see Frenchman Ordell granted the opportunity to spread his production wings across a full 12" and the results are atypically the kind of minimal leaning house you will find soundtracking one of their East London parties. The smartly named "Nobody Loves Bishopgate" is a particular highlight with Ordell laying down a rubbery bassline that complements the crisp snare rolls and generally murky atmospherics.

OdD - "Lignum Vitae"
Barac - "Lignum Vitae" (remix)
Barac - "Leontopodium"
OdD - "Leontopodium" (remix)
Review: Reaching beyond their own creative vision for their third release, the shadowy OdD Music crew invite like-minded soul Barac to come and join in on the hypnotic fun and games as a double-pack of loud-cut jams offer up creative routes into the thriving minimal breakbeat movement. The original mix of "Lignum Vitae" is a subtle beast that works with hushed tones and brushed percussion to create a truly haunting effect, while Barac injects a little more low end action and rolling rhythm into his remix to wake the track up from its elegant slumber. On the second disc Barac takes the mantle first with the slick drum-rich thrill of "Leontopodium", which is a patient and cyclical DJ tool of the highest order, leaving the gat open for OdD to serve up a choice stripped down remix on the flip.

Sorry
Review: After a summer off to bask in the props for their superb Essential Mix, the Dixon Avenue Basement Jams crew engage label mode once again with this 11th release an introduction to new artist Modini. As with a good majority of artists involved on DABJ, there is next to no information out there on Modiini (take the search engine challenge if you want) but really does it matter when the material on display is this good? There's an obvious reverence for classic Chicago tropes at play throughout, though lead cut "Estate" is the sort of thing you can see Erol Alkan dropping for sure. "Fear" is pretty darn excellent; veering off into abstract Green Velvet meets Mo Fulton territory and Modini gets even rowdier on the flip with the peak time squelcher "Fumble". This release marks the onset of the label including limited edition monotone prints from Dan Axon - simple ink on paper describing the energy of DABJ; it's origins, people, and most importantly the music.

Plastik (remastered original)
Plastik (2014 mix)
Plastik (Todd Terje mix)
Review: At the time of its original release back in 2007, Simon Baker's "Plastik" was something of an underground hit, a undoubtedly simplistic but effective club track that made it's way into many a DJs record boxes. Later picked up by Playhouse, the Frankfurt institution took the strange but very effective decision to commission Mr Todd Terje to remix the track, with the resultant Turkatech Mix still one of the Norwegian's finest efforts. However the original and redefining remix have never appeared together on wax so props to Kompakt for this new edition which includes both plus a new 2014 version from Mr Baker.

Speech Less
Speech Less (Nacho Bolognani remix)
Speech Less (Matt Rich remix)
Review: Is it purposely ironic that Guysfromneighbourhood are releasing on a label that's named after a part of east London that's as gentrified as it is dishevelled? "Speech Less" is what's been delivered and it's a popping, deeply dubby and smooth production that's made for the dusk of a Berlin afternoon that's becoming evening. Argentine producer Nacho Bolognani beefs up the original with something more solidified (you'll find yourself dancing to the bassline not the beats), while Matt Rich delivers more of a reduction than remix. A strong debut release.

Review: Moscow label Nervmusic has really put Russia on the map when it comes to avant-garde minimal, techno, and house in the five years since it's foundation in 2009, and they've done it largely by working with an international cast of low key talent. The Easy Changes helmed label opt for a different approach for this latest release from Alliv Sobol, which fans of anagrams and highly regarded minimal pioneers will positively lick their lips at. Arriving in luxurious high quality art and brandishing a very deep and minimal sound across two slabs of wax, the Toz EP is of course the work of Mr Riccy Villalobos, who uses the full length of each side to lay down some killer extended hypnotic jams.

Pitch Drift
Review: It's safe to say Midland is now one of Aus Music's marquee artists. This Duster EP provides the Englishman with his seventh release on Will Saul's label since 2010 with that killer split 12" with Ramadanman (now Pearson Sound). The title track features a Caribou-like bassline and synths which swell and vary in size over a skipping house beat. "Replex" is rougher and frenetically percussive while still remaining melodic, while "Pitch Drift" is the deepest production on the record that some how, in amongst the trippiness of it all, stays tropical.

The Shaft
Review: Ever tapping into the Perlon legacy of super-reduced house wares, U-More moves on from self-released business to join So Inagawa and Binh on Cabaret with subliminal beats for subconscious minds. "The Slope" unfolds on the A side like a prime Baby Ford & Zip joint, riding a restrained but eminently funky drum pattern and revelling in hushed pad tones to create a dark but sensual atmosphere. On the flip "Down In Down" lets the synths do the talking as a robotic melodic phrasing blurts out an intricate message around a paper-thin beat, before "The Shaft" bounces off into a skippy great blue yonder of deepest house.

Mac (Daddy) RIP (Mango Boys Hurting dub)
Tollgate PO (Mango Boys Red Eye mix)
Review: Mr G knows how to make a record, but even more so he knows how to make a club track. But for this Remote Viewing EP MR G offers up three productions of his own for the Mango Boys to dub-out and remix. First is a 'Sunday dub' to "Newmerique" which is straight up, chord-driven, club house, while the 'Hurting dub' to "Mac (Daddy) RIP" is woozy, deep and very danceable with a bassline to boot. For a third option there's a linear 'Red Eye' mix to "Tollgate PO" completing a great selection of DJ tools.

Dimplex
Review: Antony Difrancesco is only a new name to electronic music, and an enigmatic one at that. He last surfaced on a label called Coquette Records in 2012 which was their and his only release. Some two year's later he reappears on Othertones, a London label, and provides them with their second release. The title cut, "Jam", is a 909 weighted club cut sprinkled with crackly effects and a light draping of industrial ambience. On the B-side there's Vera's thrumming sine wave mix of "Dimplex", which in its original form is cold, haunting and alien sounding. Deep stuff.

Unknown Source (Mark Ambrose remix)
Unknown Source (Mark Ambrose bonus beats)
Review: Mark Ambrose is a name more commonly associated with Ben Sims, Kirk DeGiorgio and Paul Mac, than say, a minimal label from Germany. Regardless of association though, Ambrose's remixes here really create this 12". Julian Perez, however, does provide something typically kooky and tabla driven (something you could imagine Petre Inspirescu playing) but it's the two reworks that beef up this 12" without needing any trimmings, bells or whistles. And if the first remix is a little too full of flavour, there's the reduced bonus beats option on the B2.

Review: Given his long-admired skills as a selector and DJ, any new mix CD from Craig Richards is a cause for celebration. His contribution to the Get Lost series from Crosstown Rebels is no different with the CD edition containing a mammoth 37 tracks across the two discs. Whilst it was near impossible for the label to include all these tracks on this accompanying triple LP edition, Crosstown Rebels should be commended for including some of the highlights of Richards two diverse mixes. As such you get some classic early '90s NJ Garage from Black Rascals sharing space with the Mancunian tropics of Ruf Dug, vintage STL, Lowlands electro from Parallax Corporation, classic Kenny Larkin and more.

Felix Reifenberg, Muanda & Cedric Dekowski - "Lando"
Review: Following plentiful appearances on 87 Records, Felix Reifenberg and Cedric Dekowski make an appearance over at Hardworksoftdrink with some serious slim line house wares that challenge preconceptions and deliver equal amounts of soul and groove. "Novacasa" finds Reifenberg getting into a jazzy mood with skittish drums and wistful pad hum, while he and Dekowski drop a killer shuffle onto the delicate tones of "2014_Patch". On the flipside other characters enter the fold, from Thilo Dietrich's contribution on "Alome" which comes off as an outright oddball house jam that wouldn't sound out of place in a Thomas Melchior set, to Muanda lending a hand for the sumptuous and shuffling "Lando".
