  1. Seven Minutes Of Funk (part 1)
  2. Seven Minutes Of Funk (part 2)
Review: Those heavyweight funksters at West Loop Chicago are back again with more crucial heat for your boogie bag. This time the mysterious international cabal of edit heads have slipped from City Volts over to Vong45 - a label that may or may not also be under their control. The name tells you all you need to know - seven sweet minutes of luxurious grooves edited with a soft touch to keep the musicality smooth and flowing across both sides of this 7". Anyone who takes the classic '70s sound seriously will be jamming to this - buttery smooth and hot as hell, just how we like it.

  1. Flute Thing (edit W/Breaks) (4:30)
  2. Do What You Gotta Do (edit) (4:20)
Review: With no less than nine releases on the label to their name already, Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are Galaxy Sound Co's most experienced editors. Here they deliver another fantastic "45" packed with righteous grooves and life-affirming jazz moves. It's the latter that comes to the fore on side A's "Flute Thing", a sweet and seductive drift through picturesque jazz territory with some additional loose-limbed drum solos edited in halfway through. "Do What You Gotta Do" on the other hand is a simmering, string-laden soul treat rich in killer instrumentation, sumptuous orchestration, chunky grooves and hazy vocals. It's a fine edit of a superb cut and easily the record's standout cut.

  1. Show Me The Funk Breaks (instrumental) (3:47)
  2. Harder Breaks (instrumental) (4:08)
Review: The Atlanta based B Boy Breaks series continues with another drop of serious cuts to get beat jugglers, sample diggers and just straight up funk lovers going hog wild over the lashings of drum breaks. First up on the A side there's some widescreen, expansive beatdowns taking place with the massive "Show Me The Funk Breaks" - a fela esque sax screaching ,hammond organ swirling classic you already know from the many times it's been lifted for its treasured sonic ingredients. "Harder Breaks" on the flip is another monumental jam, presented here in instrumental form most recently used for the theme tune of a UK TV show . The evergreen groove is just crying out for someone with the skills to drop some serious turntablism all over this one.

  1. Baila Chibiquiban (3:08)
  2. Baila Chibiquiban (Tonton Boom edit) (4:15)
Review: Late last month, Matasuna Records successfully mined "Ritual", the sought-after 1971 album by Nico Gomez and his Afro-Percussion Inc (a studio combo helmed by Belgian composer Joseph van het Groenewoud), and reissued one of the standout tracks, "Lupita". Here they serve up another gem from the album, "Baila Chibiquiban", an Incredible Bongo Band-esque fusion of psychedelic rock, heavy funk and even heavier Afro-Cuban percussion. The fine original version is given the re-edit treatment on the flip, with Tonton Boom extending some percussive passages and emphasizing the killer groove before introducing some of the track's headier musical elements. It's the kind of rework that should find favour with proper break-dancers.

  1. Help (edit) (3:45)
  2. Love U Baby (3:11)
Review: Some 13 years after setting up shop, Agogo offshoot Resense has almost notched up a half century of releases. "45" number 48 comes courtesy of Soulbrigada, a German duo who were last seen frolicking on Matasuna Records back in 2016. They hit the ground running with A-side workout "Help (Edit)", a deliciously dancefloor-focused re-edit of a righteous Northern Soul staple by a relatively obscure Midwestern band. Low-slung, weighty, sweaty and horn-heavy with a Wilson Pickett style lead vocal, it's the kind of cut that causes pandemonium when dropped at the right time. If anything, flipside "Love U Baby" is even heavier. It's a formidably funky affair, with Soulbrigada toughening it up via the use of additional drums and floor-friendly loops of key instrumental passages.

Review: "Slacking Off" came from a Nassauvians session that found the band coming back together in the studio for the first time after a little break, but totally unprepared. Despite this, they struck real aloha gold, with Hawaiian soul, gently lilting funk and Balearic guitars all making it as summery as you could wish for. Flipside "The Time Is Now" is a previously unreleased AOR island recording with Nassauvians man Tommy Goodwin on guitar and pal Don Lepage on harmonica, and will make you nostalgic for a time and a place never known.

  1. Sitting On The Bay Banger (4:17)
  2. Fire Cracker (3:33)
Review: Last year Breakbeat Paradise inaugurated the Toxic Funk series of mash-ups, reworks and party-starting sample jams via a tidy seven-inch single from BadboE and Tom Showtime. Here the series returns with a similarly fiery "45" from Edinburgh-based DJ/producer Gramophone Soul. On side A he smashes together elements from soul classic "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", Beastie Boys raps and bombastic, loose-limbed breakbeats. The results are as effective as you'd expect (IE it sounds like a bona fide party-starter). Turn to the flip for "Fire Cracker", a tooled-up, stomping soul affair that stays closer to its soulful source material whilst also re-framing it a little for contemporary dancefloors.

  2. Bar-B-Q (3:28)
Review: Rework merchant Djar One can usually be relied to deliver the goods, regardless of whether he's in re-edit, mash-up or full on remix mode. For his latest trick, he's taken his scalpel to Fontella Bass soul classic "Rescue Me", beefing up the beats a little and thickening up the bassline while keeping much of the original in-tact. It's undeniably floor-friendly and reverential enough not to annoy those who love the original (which, let's face it, is almost all of us). Over on the flipside, he fattens up another classic soul gem, once again making the beats flow in a way that suits modern dancefloors without particularly tampering with the track's infectiously stomping groove.

  2. Children Of The Night (3:59)
Review: Japan seems to excel at everything and anything it does, including reissuing golden jazz funk. This time out, Hysear Don Walker's "Complete Expressions Vol. 2" is mined for the two escapist and mellifluous tracks that make up this essential 7". Ryuhei The Man edits "Children Of The Night" into a smooth flowing bit of late night and romantic jazz funk. It rides on a pensive bass loop and has a subtle sense of drive, while the slower original is that bit more sentimental with its noodling chords and more meandering mood. Both sides are pure winners.

Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

Review: Athens of the North originally contracted obscure 80s boogie artist Billy Bruner about reissuing two of his rare, sought-after singles - "The Tulsa Song" and "The Dream" - but instead raided his tape archives and putting together what's effectively his debut album. Combining previously released tracks (including some made as part of similarly obscure outfit T'Spoon and the gospel-leaning band The Davis Family), unheard extended versions and previously unreleased songs, the album is warm, soulful, slick and summery. Highlights include the stuttering P-funk flex of "Cats Meow", the sizzling dancefloor heat of "School Dance" and the deliciously extended version of glassy-eyed '80s soul jam "Never". If sparkling, synth-heavy '80s soul is your thing, this is one surprise retrospective you won't want to miss.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from UK funk stalwarts - and noted Mark Ronson collaborators - The Haggis Horns, so it would be fair to say that the ever-changing collective's fifth album is long overdue. The Leeds-based band apparently worked on it for two years, and you can tell: alongside their usual horn-heavy deep funk workouts and instrumental expressions of their influences (think the Meters, James Brown, Kool & The Gang and so on) you'll also find an ear-catching array of vocal numbers featuring the rasping, soulful voice of regular guest singer (and Hot Damn member) John McCallum. The result is an album oozing with good grooves, good times and even better horn arrangements.

Review: Some 30 years after rising to prominence via a now legendary NYC radio show, veteran hip-hop DJs Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia have finally made a debut album. It sees them join forces with specially created nine-piece combo The M19s Band to serve up fresh covers of a range of well-known and obscure "dance floor bangers" (as the accompanying press release puts it). There are some superb interpretations, with the Police's dub disco jam "Voices Inside My Head" becoming a sweet soul-jazz treat, the Clash's "Magnificent Dance" reborn as a Latin jazz number (complete with Rich Medina spoken word vocal) and Womack & Womack's "Baby I'm Scared of You" a seductive, shuffling Afro-Cuban jazz standard. In a word: brilliant.

Review: The Soul Flip crew are back to rework and carefully tweak more classic cuts to get those dance floors in a spin. This time they turn their attention to the evergreen classic "Get Ready" from jazz great Ella Fitzgerald. The already student and empowering single is beefed up with drums that have extra kick, crisp hits and fills and string stabs that are as bright as the sun. Now the promise of that single has been followed up with this wonderful album - a scintillating blend of Latin jazz, funk, samba, Afrobeat and much more besides. The playing is second to none, not least the gorgeous Rhodes on "Dia De Verao", and the energy pivots nimbly across these seven tracks to make for a varied but cohesive listen. Uptempo "Guerreiro Yoruba" is an infectious stomper, while "Copacabana" captures a cool 70s funk vibe that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rufus & Chaka Khan record. With the title track bringing the perfect laid back party flavour too, there's a lot to savour on this album, not least while the sun is shining.

Review: While they might dress like Aussie Rules Football players from the 1920s, Karate Boogaloo are a serious funk outfit. The Melbourne-based combo earned their stripes as the rhythm section for one of the city's most popular local soul bands, The Cactus Channel, and their ability to create killer cuts from a stripped-back line-up of musicians (drums, electric guitar, bass, Hammond organ) is one of the most endearing things about new album "Carn The Boogers". Able to somehow sound loose and tight at the same time, the band's instrumental compositions variously doff a cap to the Shadows, the deep funk of the Meters, drowsy late-night rhythm & blues and more psychedelic, out-of-this world soul bands. As you can see, their music is hard to describe, but also hugely enjoyable.

Little info is available, though if the modern soul end of gospel is your thing it's well worth picking up. As you'd expect, the vocals from Weeks and his collaborators are soulful and righteous, while the accompanying music is impeccably played and surprisingly well produced given the likely budget constraints. Highlights include the heavy funk-soul strut of "It Took A Miracle", the Bob James-influenced brilliance of "I Wanna Sing For You" and fizzing LP opener and bona fide dancefloor rocker "I Will Stand On It".
