  1. Lucien's Luck - "You Should Know!" (Love That Brass unreleased edit)
  2. The Funktified Enforcers - "Papa Got A Brand New Bag" (unreleased Hammond Organ edit)
Review: Another sought after exclusive just for Juno repress from those cheeky Americans at Killer Funk, with curiously named artist Lucien's Luck kicking off the A Side with an infectious hip hop friendly brass led work out big with the b boys. You really should know this, as they so rightly tell us, and they could be right! On the flip, the Funktified Enforcers drop what could be the best instrumental version of a James Brown million dollar seller yet. Great drum breaks doused in screaming Hammond organ in large enough amounts to keep that dancefloor on the boil with your dancing feet occupied for the duration.A funk 45 must have record !

  1. Apache
  2. Shaft In Africa
Review: ** Repress for the breaks dons ** The long awaited new Visioneers Limited Edition 45 produced by Marc Mac of 4hero is here at last on BBE offshoot Omniverse. No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. On the A-Side a version of The Shadows classic ''Apache'' gets flipped by Visioneers remake of Johnny Pate's B-Boy bomb "Shaft In Africa". Heavy horns and bongos aplenty - this is just wanted the doctor ordered. It's limited, it's hot, go get it!

  1. Augusta Georgia
  2. South Carolina
Review: A highly limited collectors' re-press of the oddball German funk act who had more monikers than they did releases. Originally released in 1993, this is one of the band's earliest cuts, but their dusty deliver and raw Hammond smashing action give the sweet sensation of the late 60s. "Augusta Georgia" is a frenetic ode to the Brown style of funk while "South Carolina" is powered by a more poignant blues motif. Get it while it's hot!

Review: Word on the street was that Volcov's edit series was supposed to finish two releases ago in 2010. Clearly gluttons for punishment - and perhaps just a tad inspired to show the current league of editors how to do it properly - Slam Jam return with five more discerningly curated re-cuts. From the frenetic bongo and minor-key chorus warbles of "City" to the 80s Wonder-inspired electro boogie of "Nine", this reinforces Slam Jam's premier position when it comes to both obscure selection skills and creative editing.

  1. Asafo Beesuon Medley (Gruff & Grey edit)
Review: Mr Bongo continue their Classic African series with a trip to late 60s Ghana. Having re-released CK Mann & His Carousel 7's album Funky Highlife late last year, the label have now given their in-house editor (Brighton's Gareth Stephens) the honour of dicing and splicing the 14 minute original. Naturally he's done with punchy aplomb. As a result there's not a dull moment in sight as we switch and sway from swooping harmonic chorus to jaunty organ stabs with undiluted Afrobeat glee. Jump on this now... it's highly limited!

  1. Firewalker (3:52)
  2. Chalupa (4:45)
Review: Few bands live up to their name in the way Jungle Fire do; fusing Cumbia, Afrobeat and trad funk, each JF jam blazes the floor with real power. "Firewalker" is the buzz-cut here, swaggering with Afro-disco confidence; it's all about the epic horn Q&A and cutlass-sharp guitar lick. "Chalupa" takes a deeper route into the dancefloor by way of a classic soul riff that sways to-and-fro before breaking down into a more staccato rhythm. Watch out for the pay-off... Those jazz horns are a delight to behold!

  1. Mandrill - "Hagalo" (Doctor Stereo De Nueva York A Buenos Aires mix)
  2. Doctor Stereo - "Jet 2 Panama"
Review: The GAMM collective have been enjoying a seasonal slumber during the Winter months but with Summer scheduled to arrive the label are cranking back into business with the first of several releases. Reaching out to South America, GAMM invites Buenos Aires based producer Doctor Stereo into the fold for a double drop of Latin hotness. On the A Side, Mandrill's horn heavy 1972 classic "Hagalo" is given a self styled 'Nueva York A Buenos Aires mix' by the good Doctor who retains it's breezy feeling whilst beefing up the drums with mucho caliente results - watch out for the drop! On the flip, Dr Stereo turns up the heat with the Latin B-Boy bomb "Jet 2 Panama" which has the old school feel of Quantic's early Breaking Bread output.

  1. The Fawcett Negotiation
  2. The New Lots Of Cooperstown
Review: Wah Wah 45s' never-ending hunt for exciting funk talent continues as they introduce the one-man-wonder Gene Dudley. A highly talented multi-instrumentalist, Gene plays every note you hear on this 7", from the tight raspberry blowing horns to the swish-tickling drums. The title track is a Daptone-esque doo-wop with a neat refrain and simple Q&A structure while "The New Lots Of Cooperstown" meanders a little more into sombre soul territory. Two stunning instrumentals, one memorable introduction - Gene Dudley's talents are likely to take him far.

  2. I Feel Good
Review: Unless you're really subverting it and doing something pretty far out, James Brown covers are largely best avoided. Duffy and Johnny's rendition is a refreshing exception; the orchestra carry serious weight (and keep it as tight as Brown as insist himself) and Johnny's delivery is emphatic enough to rise myriad groin thrusts. Watch out for the incredible organ solo, followed by a double kickdrum crescendo and insane spiralling horn riffs. Feel good? Damn straight!

  1. Runnin Out
  2. Hot Pants
Review: German funk collective let loose on Kat with two stunning authentic jams. "Runnin Out" is a slow and steady stomper with big horn harmonies and great backing on the chorus that's not dissimilar to Alice Russell's early material. As the title suggests "Heartbreak" comes with a tad more romance and just a touch of the Springfields. Swinging on more of a breakbeat rhythm the groove mutates from soulful in the verses to full-on funky on the chorus.

  1. Big Noise From Winnetka
Review: Fresh from '75, Spaghetti Head's "Big Noise From Winnekta" is one of those tunes you wish went on for hours. Clem Clattini's pounding drum textures, Les Hurdle's funky-pluck bass riffage and the stupidly hooky whistled melody (a la Sandy Nelson) build and build into a whirlwind groove that captivates and mesmerises with a Seven Dwarves style working militancy. One can only imagine how spell binding this would be played live. A great dust-off from Private Stock here.
