Bis (feat Azymuth) (3:56)
Bis (instrumental) (3:55)
Review: Featuring 11 new compositions from Arthur Verocai with guest musicians, 'Encore' is the highly anticipated follow up to his eponymous debut album from 1972. It sees Verocai take his over 35 years experience in music to create a new classic of Brazilian music that takes in American soul and cinematic experimentation. The single 'Bis' is taken from the album and features Jose Roberto Bertrami aka Azymuth on keys, plus a 17 piece string section and eight horns.

Mathar (3:42)
Regards From Freddie Horowitz (4:39)
Review: The Dave Pike Set was a five-piece jazz band active for only four years from '68 to '72. But in that short time that manages seven albums, and had some standout single success. Two of their biggest - 1969's 'Mathar'/'I'm On My Way' - are repressed here on a 7" that will cost you upwards of L300 if you can find an original. There are some heavy sitar vibes on the a-side to start with, eventually making way for a strident 60s beat that is all psyched-out jazz stylings and raw drums. The flip is a much more after-dinner vibe, with harmonic keys setting a silky tone.

Love & Happiness (4:57)
Yellow Bird (4:44)
Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

Review: Following his last album for Stone's Throw, and a well received ambient record, John Carroll Kirby's Septet album was recorded live in the studio with a range of talents playing keys, vibes, bass, percussion and drums. The composer and keyboardist leads the charge and approached the album wanting to play "with the chaos of jazz fashion in the 70's/80's, bands like Weather Report and Miles Davis." He sure does that but there is beauty in the madness, with plenty of lush and golden keys dancing above lithe and ad hoc rhythms. A new school classic, for sure.

Review: For their next trick, Blue Note unleash a newly remastered album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers that was first released in 1967, six years after it was recorded. With Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass, some say this was the band's greatest ever line up. The tunes were written by a mixture of the band members and range from the deep soul joy of 'A Little Busy' to the dancier 'Lost And Found' via the modal masterpiece that is 'Afrique.'

And Along Came Ron Rahsaan (9:42)
Review: Shamek Farrah & Folks's 1978 recording 'La Dee La La' gets a worthy reissue here by Paul Murphy's Jazz Room. It's a high class fusion of funk, Afro, soul and jazz by Strata-east stalwart Farrah on sax, ad legendary trumpet player Malachi Thompson. The world-wide sounds take in Latin tinged sun on 'The White Lady" featuring Sonelius Smith on piano, Township party vibes on the titular cut and rap spiritual highs on 'Along Came Ron Rahsaan' which has Vivian Chandler serving up a wordless delivery that will leave you feeling soul-enriched. originals are hard to find and expensive when you do, so this is a timely reissue.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing of any serious jazz enthusiast: a recently rediscovered recording of a live performance made by the Pharoah Sanders Quartet at the Grand Auditorium at Studio 104, Paris, in 1975. The tenor saxophonist is undoubtedly the star of the show throughout, though the fluidity of the double bass playing, the loose-limbed drumming and the rush-inducing breeziness of the piano parts - especially on "Love Is Here" parts one and two, which reminded us of another Sanders classic "You've Got To Have Freedom" - are all equally as ear-catching. Musically, it's as inspired as you'd expect, nestling somewhere between the great maestro's greatest "astral jazz" recordings and more traditional forms of jazz.

Review: Sun Ra's Lanquidity album from 1978 is one of the greats. It becomes even more special at the hands of Strut, though, who serve up this definitive edition across eight sides of vinyl, with an all new 12-page over-sized booklet. As well as all the tracks of the original album, also included here are alternative mixes by Bob Blank originally released in limited quantities for a 1978 Arkestra gig at Georgia Tech. They are just as fluid and star-gazing as the original versions, with ad hoc solos and supremely liquid grooves washing over you time and again.

Review: Tropic of Love Music makes to bow here with an album from Idris Rahman, Leon Brichard and Tom Skinner, aka Wildflower. Their third release is another deep and spiritual exploration of rhythm and sound with elements of jazz, hip-hop and broken beat all colouring the most contemporary sounds. The confidence and musicianship of this group really shines through with tracks managed to be both structured and rhythmic but open to freeform exploration with a carefree ethic. Each song has a colour reference suggestive of mood, tone and internal balance, making this an all the more involving listen.

Cool Struttin'
Blue Minor
Sippin' At Bells
Deep Night
Review: Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin' album is a jazz classic. The artist himself shone bright for a brief but intense period of creativity, much like greats before him such as Charlie Parker and Fats Navarro. His intricate playing and hard swing mentality makes for music filled with nuance and detail but sadly he never got the recognition he deserved during his short life (he died aged 31). He put out seven records in all on Blue Note and played with the likes of John Coltrane and Donald Byrd. This memorable session was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and features a quintet made up of altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones.

Sun Is Rising (4:01)
A Day In A Life (2:57)
Review: WallenBink is reissuing a serious clutch of essential jazz 7"s this month. Wolfgang Dauner is one of them and this marks the first time these tunes have ever been on an unedited 45 single made from audiophile-grade vinyl, with mastering by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Magee and new artwork authentically recreated on heavyweight gloss sleeves. The music goes beyond Dauner's usual remit and takes in elements of raga, psyche, and eastern melody that makes it all the more intoxicating. 'Sun Is Rising' is s trippy opener and 'A Day In The Life' is a Beatles cover stripped back to masterful minimal sounds.

Review: Salah Ragab's Cairo Jazz Band album from 1973 is an undeniable classic of the genre. The definitive Egyptian jazz album blends the best of Black American jazz with plenty of rich Islamic traditions and Egyptian folklore and now gets reissued by Sturt across a glorious double gatefold with an insert. These storytelling tracks range fo flute laced percussive numbers that are loose, happy and airy such as on the excellent 'Mervat' to more swinging, jazz lounge groovers like 'Black Butterfly.' There is real cinematic drama in 'Upper Egypt The King's Valley' as well as plenty of other highlights on this essential jazz album.

Review: Hungarian jazz maestro Gabor Szabo has a cult following, and for good reason. His take on the timeless genre is tinged with Eastern reflection and late night psychedelics that make him one of the most original guitarists of his generation. Dreams is his masterpiece from 1968, and one that has been hard and expensive to buy for decades. It came when he had already found fame thanks to his exceptional Spellbinder album and many years playing on the US West Coast. Jazz, pop, Gypsy, Indian, and Asian fusions all feature and sound as fresh today as they did back then.

Keumgang (3:33)
Tampomambo (3:19)
Review: In their latest deep dive into the thriving Finnish jazz scene, We Jazz Records showcases two tracks from Tampio, a sextet whose trademark sound mixes Latin jazz with elements of cumbia and mambo. Title track 'Keumgang' is a fiery and fearsome affair in which foreboding, spy-funk style horn blasts spar with jaunty accordion motifs, tipsy trumpet solos and psyche-funk organ lines atop a cumbia style rhythm track performed by a trio of percussionists. Over on the flip 'Tampomambo' is an even more up-tempo and groovy affair featuring a heavier, fuzzy mambo groove, wilder accordion sounds and a seriously weighty bassline. It, too, has a slightly psychedelic feel so should land with DJs who like the more hallucinatory end of Latin music.

Review: Real Gone Music continues to take care of a series of much needed reissues of the vital Black Jazz Records catalogue. Calvin Keys's 1971 debut album for the label marked him out as an assured new star in the genre after he spent the previous decade backing up jazz royalty. Stepping out on his own, he recruited pianist Larry Nash, bassist Lawrence Evans, drummer Bob Braye and flautist-songwriter Owen Marshall today down some real deep heat that made Keys a Bay Area mainstay. Freshly remastered for CD and vinyl, drop the needle on this one and sit back in awe.

Review: Florian Pelissier is a jazz pianist and band leader from France who now serves up his fifth studio album. It was recorded at the legendary jazz institution, the Rudy Van Gelder Studio, and sits right up there with some of the studio's best recent project. Each piece is accessible and airy, with lilting rhythms and dancing keys backed up by fine horns and expressive sax work. Pelissier's expressive piano is a key feature on many pieces, such as the wildly intoxicating 'Life At The Vanguard' and swinging number 'Baron Samedi' which is ripe for the dance floor.
