Slow Heart
Song VI
Song IV (Quintet)
Review: This year's Record Store Day has been nothing short of sensational, with countless gems from the past having been made available once again, but this morbidly sough-after collaboration between Peter Zummo and Arthur Russell will have die-hard fans of both artists salivating manically. In all honesty, it is an outstanding piece of music and one which fully deserved an official reissue. This forward-thinking pair of artists were so ahead of the game back in the 80's that it's impossible to think how people reacted to this stuff back then. The opener, "Sci-Fi" is their familiar bundle of horns, delays and violins, all blended together with Russell's vocal laments, whereas "Slow Heart" heads into deeper, more rhythmic territories. On the flip, "Song VI" is a mesmerising battle between xylophones, marching shreds of percussion and extravagantly-timed delay shots, while the Quintet version drops in a much-welcomed dose of Russell's goofy lyricism. Not to be missed.

Protection Now! (demo)

Review: After last year's brooding 7", Regis and Silent Servant return to Minimal Wave with their Sandra Electronics project and to be honest, we couldn't be more excited. Hearing what these two techno leviathans are up to in their more industrial modes is both a privilege and a pleasure to the ear-drums. Exploring the genre-less corners of coldwave and post-punk, this six-track EP is probably one if this year's hottest releases so far. From the crisp, metallic drum twists of "It Slipped Her Mind" to the almost Middle-Eastern sounds of "Protection Now!", and the noisy, Gristle-like bounce of "Publicity (demo)", it's a total winner in our books. You also get a live version of "Want Need", where the duo culminate into total insanity and tie things off in fine style. Are these two going to concentrate on this kind of stuff form now one? We hope so, this is it. Highly recommended.

Review: If you've followed Mica Levi's work over the years as part of avant pop act Micachu & The Shapes, you'll know the London-based musician is a unique talent. It was apparent on their debut album Jewellery and has been demonstrated again and again (see the 2011 live LP Chopped & Screwed recorded with the London Sinfonietta for the most compelling example) Levi's work on the soundtrack for Under The Skin has rightly been praised, with her original score a crucial element of Jonathan Glazer's critically acclaimed Scarlett Johansson vehicle. Removed of the film and pressed on vinyl here, Levi's compositions sound all the more captivating in isolation and they should hopefully open all manner of interesting doors for the musician.

Review: Blackest Ever Black have instinctively steered towards the industrio-noise domain over the last few years, but the Young Echo crew of Bristolians Vessel - a Juno HQ favourite - El Kid and Jabu team up for a raucous excursion into deeper, bassier territories. This isn't dub music per se; it's more an introspective into the powers of the low-end...All geared up for soundsystem destruction, of course. Seriously though, these are some heavy cuts which mark both the development of a fascinating collaboration and a welcomed breath of fresh air from a label which usually only likes to breathe noxious fumes.

Review: Record Store Day Edition: Vintage Robotnicks is a killer presentation of early Alexander Robotnick material from the dudes and dudettes at Seattle label Medical Records, drawing together early singles and cuts never before released on vinyl. Medical are renowned for their disco obsession with Maurizio Dami's work as Alexander Robotnick, with his debut album Ce N'Est Q'Un Debut the subject of their second reissue back in 2010 and their love shines through on this eleven track collection. If your knowledge of the Robotnick oeuvre doesn't go very far past "Problemes D'Amour, you'll find Vintage Robotnicks an enlightening collection, largely covering his work recorded between 1982-1984. For fans of classic Italo disco and it's many permutations and essential to fans who loved the Medical Records reissue of Ce N'Est Q'Un Debut.

Review: Minimal Wave sister label Cititrax have been teasing fans with the prospect of a Further Reductions album from Shawn O'Sullivan and Katie Rose and the six tracks on Woodwork more than live up to expectations! Although O'Sullivan will be known to most for his industrial leaning techno productions for labels like Avian, L.I.E.S. and The Corner, the Further Reductions collaboration with Katie Rose dates back as far as 2008, formed to explore a vocal-led, contemporary take on the minimal wave sound. According to Cititrax, Woodwork combines the influences of classic techno and early house to create "super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor." There's something XTRMNTR era Primal Scream about "High End Basics" whilst "Void Of Course" sounds like gloopy acid house slowed down to a deathly crawl, the rest you should experience for yourself!

Shake Your Molecules (original)
Shake Your Molecules (dub)
Too Many People (alt version)
Art Dimension (alt version)
Review: Nothing but gorgeousness seems to characterise the work of the Minimal Wave imprint over the recent years. It's a label that is both unpredictable and continuously elegant in its choice of reissues. This time, it's a wonderful unearthing of Soma Holidays cult-hit, Shake Your Molecules. The Franco-American duo was part of Brooklyn's clique of artists throughout the 1980's, and although their sound is firmly representative of that era, the tracks are still ridiculously fresh and seductive both in their melodies and vocals. The title track is a sort of synth-pop tune gone wrong in a good way, where drugged-up lyrics meets morphing synths and metallic drum machines, whereas the Dub cut could easily be played in most techno DJ sets these days. On the B-side, we have the charming, atmospheric glow of "Too Many People" and "Art Dimension", the top pick in our opinion and one which is screaming to be be remixed into a contemporary house tune.

Review: Record Store Day Edition: Last year's inaugural Electroconvulsive Therapy from Medical Records was the Seattle label's first ever compilation release, and was pretty broad in focus taking in all manner of early 80s international curios. This second volume narrows the scope to centre specifically on the Fuzz Dance subsidiary of Italian label Materiali Sonori. Bridging the gap between primitive synth, new wave and Italo disco, most releases on the now defunct Fuzz Dance featured the hand of Maurizio Dami AKA Alexander Robotnick in some capacity or other, and it's a label that is more than worthy of some retrospective praise. Electroconvulsive Therapy Volume 2 highlights some of the label's rarer moments, and is presented in the most intriguing of ways with both the A and B sides from 12"s by Trophy, ZED and Mya & The Mirror presented either face of this record. Fans of rare Italo will be all over ZED's "Plastic Love".

Review: LA-based painter and beatmaker Mtendere Mandowa has previously impressed with his experimental work as Teebs on Brainfeeder, All City and Svetlana Industries. This second full length, which is being released simultaneously on Brainfeeder and Big Dada, offers a dreamy, ethereal alternative to the fiery intensity and heart aching poignancy of his 2010 debut album, Ardour. While that was recorded in the immediate aftermath of a death in the family, the warmth, lucidity and blssfulness of Estara reflects Mandowa's new-found happiness. Of course, it's still as fuzzy and eccentric as its predecessor, but puts far greater emphasis on melodic warmth, with his skittering, experimental hip-hop beats cloaked in pastel textures and watercolour sounds.

Review: Back in 2011, Gerd Janson's Running Back introduced many people to the music LA producer Diego Herrera makes as Suzanne Kraft with the Green Flash EP that was as vivid in presentation as it was in tone. You'll be hearing a lot from Diego Herrera this year, with some high profile collaborative releases with Secret Circuit on the way; an album as Blase on ESP Institute and an Odd Numbers hookup with Willie Burns for Rush Hour's No 'Label'. Before all that, Gerd Janson welcomes Herrera, er, back into the fold with this vinyl issue of the Missum CDr that introduced the Suzanne Kraft project back in 2010. In contrast to the disco-tinged house music of the aforementioned Green Flash EP, the seven tracks on Missum take on a more experimental tone, with beats largely absent in favour of some heavily textured ambient soundscapes produced with a Tascam 464 Portastudio four-track recorder.

Review: Although the past several years have seen ambient musician Christian Fennesz collaborating with a number of high profile figures - Ryuchi Sakamoto to name one - as well as release an EP, cassette, and soundtrack, the Austrian's last full solo LP was 2008?s Black Sea, making Becs very eagerly awaited indeed. A conceptual follow-up to 2001's seminal Endless Summer, Becs supposedly eschews the drone-based productions of Black Sea and sees a return to the "more florid pop mechanisms" of Endless Summer, something evident across the searing yet colourful textures that make up the album.

Review: Following their celebrated Arthur Russell release, the utterly on-point Arc Light Editions has reissued one of Ingram Marshall's most sought-after compositions of the mid-80's, and one which has inspired a wide spectrum of electronic musicians well into the present day. Using an improvisational work schema consisting of brass instruments and obscure sound effects, Marshall's Fog Tapes is an airy, woollen soundscape with a sinister twist. "Gradual Requiem is split into five chapters, beginning with a mandolin-like sound, before being engulfed by piano keys and eventually becoming more and more sparse as it fades away into an eerie patter of sounds. Real soundtrack stuff this, be sure to take in full form.

Review: Waxwork Records is thrilled to announce their next LP release, the 1982 horror anthology classic "Creepshow". The film was directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King. The score was composed and performed by John Harrison ("Day Of The Dead", "Tales From the Darkside").

This definitive edition of the film score has never before been released. The original master tapes of the "Creepshow" film score were lost for over 30 years, but with the efforts of composer John Harrison and Waxwork Records, the tapes were located in the attic of Jeree Recording Studios in New Brighton, PA. The tapes remained in remarkable shape over the years and were re-mixed and re-mastered for vinyl. The "Creepshow" score has never sounded this good.

Pressed on 180-gram Meteor Shit Green colored vinyl, and packaged with a satin-coated 12" x 12" art print of The Creeper.

Review: Hard-working experimental music types Downliners Sekt are masters of the deep, woozy, claustrophobic groove. This third full length - their first for acclaimed French imprint Infine - is jam-packed with such moments of smoky goodness, all soft-focus rhythms, dubwise chords and long-drawn out pads. It's intoxicating, all right, and evokes hazy memories of sitting in smoke-filled rooms early in the morning, feeling strangely in tune with the bubbling, off-kilter rhythms seeping from the speakers. Highlights are pleasingly plentiful, from the jumpy dreaminess of "This American Life" and vintage Hyperdub deepness of "Eiger Dreams", to the cascading pianos and field recordings of "Junior High" and tough, dancefloor-focused "Once Mercurial".

Review: Ably teased by last summer's Jan Mayen EP, Seyberth and Heider's 12-year-deep organic funk project has reached a whole new level in sedative sonic luxury with their fourth LP. Deep, dubby and heavily textured, it's a cosmic adventure from the off, taking in blues, jazz, ambient, funk and dub in equal measure. Highlights include the lolloping late-night-drive beats and steady keys of "Kodiak", the harrowed alien plucks and scrapes of "Der Kran" and the enveloping Floydian sensation of bass and reverbed guitars of "SAE". A rich experience from start to finish.

What Fresh Hell Is This?
Review: Ralph 'Bass Clef' Cumbers is gaining ever more respect and notoriety as a modular synth wielder of note, and especially with this more experimental side project of his. The snappily titled LP moves with the playful animation of Cumbers' live sets, consciously inhabited by a dubby spirit but largely focused on classic electronica as a frame of reference. The melodic notes range from drawn out wails undergoing processing harassment to punchy bleeps and blips, commonly anchored to sizable rhythmic instruction but not bound by it. There are dreamy, mysterious moments on "Music For Trepanning" while "The Magpie On The Gallows" comes from the same mathematical motion mentality as early Autechre. If you enjoy the odd blast into the wild country of fringe electronics then this album will undoubtedly appeal to you.

Review: It's time for another ambitious soiree with the No Pain In Pop crowd, this time reaching for an artist with plentiful ties to the label already. Ukkonen has a grounding in the romantic nature of original Detroit techno, as is evident as "Luomus" takes hold like a golden-era Carl Craig production, all haunting strings and rousing arpeggios with barely a beat in sight. The long-form piece evolves naturally without ever feeling laborious, moving into various suites that come on like a fine collection of short stories. "Aikomus" meanwhile takes a more linear tack, still stretched over twelve minutes but with a consistent thread that operates in the more mellow end of the techno spectrum, making for some seriously arresting music in the process.

Review: Editions Mego aren't only good at releasing classics, but they're actually equally as amazing at scouting new, raw talent. The American artiste, Klara Lewis, steps into the limelight with ten audaciously diverse electronic sculptures. Samples and field recordings get moulded and chopped-up and create rhythmic patterns which could almost be danced to. For instance, the opener "CATT" is a rough and improvisational patchwork of organic noises and atmospherics gathered from diverse settings and fused herein to create a stunning hook. The same goes for the rest of the tracks and to be honest, Lewis is actually doing something interesting with field recordings - we can't wait to hear her sound progress into an even more convoluted sonic shuffle! Tip!

Review: Loops Haunt, aka Dundee-based producer Scott Douglas Gordan, has been cultivating his own brand of crepuscular electronica for the past five years, with his intermittent output finding a home on Bristol label Black Acre. Gordan seems to have gravitated closer to the album format with every release, 2012's five track Zenith was somewhere between LP and EP, so it's little surprise to see his latest Black Acre release fully embracing the album format. Some eleven tracks long, Exits is apparently designed to be listened to in one sitting, and we presume with the curtains drawn and some stiff Scotch for company.

Review: Brett Naucke, otherwise known as Catholic Tapes boss or Face Worker in his less docile moods, is simply a great electronic artist form the States and it's no wonder that Spectrum Spools, the label renowned for picking up on people like Container and more recently reissuing the Aquaplano Sessions by Donato Dozzy and Neel, have picked him up for an LP. We wouldn't really call it noise but it's not exactly ambient, rather, a beautiful eight tracks of sonic experimentation. "Luau" is one of our favourites, with its glitchy shreds of sound skipping hastily into a rickety groove, but the whole damn work is outstanding and works gorgeously as a whole piece of music. Spectrum Spools have done it again - class!

Review: Muslimgauze is given the Vinyl On Demand treatment! Bryn Jones work as Muslimgauze has been
retrospectively compared to Dominick Fernow's Vatican Shadow for his occasional forays into rougher texture as well as the politically charged subtext, but the music is a lot more wide-ranging, moving from an early industrial influence into something much more psychedelic, making his music feel more relevant today than ever. Chasing The Shadow of Bryn Jones 1983-1988 may only make a dent in Jones' career, and the price tag will put off all but the most affluent of interested Muslimgauze completists, but the ten LPs highlight how crucial an influence his mid 80s output remains on modern music. Includes 208-page book, A1 poster, and 15-track CD compiled By Charles Powne of Soleilmoon.
