Review: The new Spacetalk label gets off to a flying start thanks to this compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: Armand Van Helden's accidental contribution to the development of UK garage is well known; it was his fusions of chunky U.S garage drums and booming, UK-style bass that helped inspire the birth of "speed garage". Those pioneering tracks - in particular his remixes of CJ Bolland and Sneaker Pimps - take pride of place on this House Masters career retrospective. They're joined by a swathe of gigantic dancefloor hits ("Flowerz", "The Witch Doctor", "Bonkers", Duck Sauce's "Barbara Streisand"), and a selection of lesser known productions and remixes. These include a vintage, NYC garage-goes-rave rework of Kim English, an overlooked hook-up with DJ Sneak ("Psychic Bounty Killaz"), and a terrific house interpretation of Cerrone's "Je Suis Music".

Review: For their latest trawl through the back catalogues of legendary labels Epic, Arista, Philadelphia International and RCA Victor, SonyBMG has handed over the reins to noted re-editor and crate-digger DJ Reverend P. He duly gathers together three discs of killer material, alternating between the well-loved - Tom Browne's "Funkin' For Jamaica", The Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt", and George Duke's "Brazilian Love Affair", for starters - and the slightly lesser-known. The latter category contains some excellent alternative mixes, including the original, killer 12" version of Herbie Hancock's "Stars In Your Eyes", a rare Tom Moulton remix of "Anyway You Wanna" by Peoples Choice, and a smattering of the good Reverend's own re-edits.

Review: Back in 2012, Rush Hour boss Antal Heitlager put together a sublime collection of obscure Surinamese disco and boogie for sister label Kindred Spirits. Four years on, and with assistance from Thomas Gesthuizen, he presents the follow-up, Surinam Funk Force. Predictably, it's another fine set full of surprise gems and barely-known classics. While some tracks sound authentically American (see the deep and harmonious brilliance of Steve Watson's "Born To Boogie", and Surinam scene stalwart Sumy's eccentric, synth-laden "The Funky 'G' (Only Comes At Night)", some of the most potent cuts lean more heavily on traditional Surinamese music. In this camp you'll find the thrilling funk of Explosion's "Wakka Mang", and the off-kilter tropical disco-funk of Ronald Snijders' "Kaseko Attack".

Review: For the latest volume in their popular 'In The House' mix series, Defected has turned to longtime friend of the family and weekly Defected Radio show host Sam Divine. She has a reputation for being a smart and on-point selector, able to draw on a vast knowledge of house in its' many myriad forms. That's very much in evidence here, as she joins the dots between hot contemporary house tracks - think Tommy Bones' "Aisha", Riva Starr's "Raw Feel", and Chus & Ceballos' "All I Want" - and stone cold classics (the dub of Hardrive's "Deep Inside", legendary NYC cuts from Mood II Swing, amd S-Man and Harry Romero).

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, Nigeria Soul Fever is apparently Soul Jazz Records' first attempt to document the vibrant West African disco, Afro-funk and boogie scene of the 1970s. As usual, they've done a bang-up job. Noted crate-digging journalist Bill Brewster provides detailed sleeve notes, while the two-disc selection is largely made up of blistering cuts from artists who will be unfamiliar to all but the most studied Afro-disco diggers. The selections from Don Bruce & The Angels, Akin Richards & The Executives and Angela Starr, in particular, are little less than essential, as the continued high prices of their original 12" single releases neatly proves. If you're after a West African disco primer, look no further.

Review: Peace and football: not only the best compilation album title of 2006 (and possibly every year since) but also an immaculate collection of Brazilian folk, funk, disco and soul by Sonar Kollektiv champs Jazzanova. Ten years on and the SK dons are back with a second edition of Paz E Futbol, compiled with just as much care as an homage to football's spiritual home as that debut record. To adopt the football parlance, the band's digging duties score goal after goal after goal; the smoky Simoneisms of Ary Lobo, the heavenly vibraphonics of Skymark, the slippery time signature and almost cosmic bossa of Lucas Santana, the raw jazz soul of Nathan Haines, the list goes on. Review: Cocoon's alphabetically titled compilation series has reached the letter P. As usual, the long running German label has used the opportunity to gather together a swathe of previously unheard techno jams, which it claims are loaded with "power and purity". There are certainly plenty of notable highlights. Redshape impresses with the drowsy and melodious, but notably heavy, "The Choice", while Scottish veteran Alex Smoke drops some seriously off-kilter techno-fun in the shape of "Porridge". Josh Wink also offers a nod to his acid-obsessed past with the big room throb of "Buoyantly Grounded", while there's also a first Cocoon appearance for Dresden star Jacob Korn. His sparkling, slow burning "You Fill Me" is one of the collection's strongest moments.

Review: Eleven years ago, Bryan Gee launched the Liquid V Club Sessions mix series as a showcase for both his noted DJ skills, and the fluid, funk-fuelled D&B rollers he was putting out on the Liquid V label. Volume Six - the first installment since 2013 - sticks to the script, with the Cheltenham-raised jungle selector whipping through 23 tip-top liquid D&B selections in little over 70 minutes. Highlights come thick and fast, from the cut-glass strings and bouncy beats of Phase 2's "Come With Me", and throbbing wobble bass and spine-tingling vocal breakdown of L-Side's remix of Simplification & Translate's "Tonight", to the soulful shuffle of Bailey's "Stargazing", featuring the slick, R&B style vocals of Tali.

Review: Marini's On 57 is a bar at the top of the tallest building in Kuala Lumpur, famous for its' stunning views of gorgeous Malaysian sunsets. It's as good an inspiration as any for a compilation series. Sunset Hours Volume 3 picks up where previous installments from Jose Padilla and Chris Coco & Afterlife left off. This time round, one-time Bent man Simon Mills is the selector. There's naturally much downtempo goodness to savour, from the lilting vocals and swinging trip-hop beats of Dekoi's "I Can Celebrate Out Here", and the shuffling Balearic haziness of HNNY's AOR-influenced "Cheer Up My Brother", to ultra-deep house excursions from Mr Fingers, Hidden Spheres and Mills himself (the rather fine "Meeting Point").

Review: With another season on the White Isle drawing to a close, infamous beachside venue Cafe Mambo has recruited Balearic beats veteran Pete Gooding to mix-up two CDs worth of sunset-friendly favourites. The first disc is a woozy, largely downtempo affair, with Gooding working his way through dreamy cuts from the likes of Afterlife, Chris Coco, Spike, Coyote, Jose Padilla and International Feel boss Mark Barrott (whose own Sketches From An Island series has re-imagined the classic Ibiza chill-out sound). Gooding subtly raises the tempo on disco two, moving from glassy-eyed deep house and nu-disco cuts, to chunky, soul-flecked house and techno floorfillers. Along the way, he finds room for high quality tracks from Eli Escobar, Black Spuma, Dennis Ferrer, Mr G and Steve Cobby.
