  2. Gilb'R - "Cosmogonie" (6:28)
  3. Lucas Croon - "Threshold Stimulus" (6:25)
  4. Neuzeitliche Bodenbelage & Sam Irl - "Faeden" (5:35)
Review: Earlier in the year, Fantastic Twins' Julienne Dessagne offered up the first volume in a new series of multi-artist EPs with a decidedly psychedelic electronic bent. Four months on, she's assembled another team of musical miscreants to deliver more audio "Microdosing". Oceanic kicks things off with the Steve Reich style melodic loops and gently pulsating electronic rhythms of "Parallel Lines Of Stripes", before Versatile Records founder Gilb'R dives deep into swirling ambient waters via the multi-speed oddness of "Cosmogonie". Over on side B, Lucas Croon fuses post-dubstep rhythms, skittish drum solos, twisted acid lines and intergalactic electronics on "Threshold Stimulus", while Neuzeitliche Bodenbelage and Sam Irl join forces for the kosmiche throb of "Faeden".

  3. Solid Space - "Destination Moon" (Red Axes edit) (5:37)
  4. X Ray Pop - "La Machine A Rever" (Red Axes edit) (5:08)
Review: There's much to admire on this latest 12" excursion from hard-working Israeli duo Red Axes. On the A-side you'll find two brand new collaborations, the most notable of which is "NYX Tape" - a clandestine, mind-altering chunk of minimal wave drug-chug featuring the distinctive spoken word vocals of original no wave star Gina X (she of "No GDM" fame). Chloe Raunet AKA C.A.R lends her similarly stylish spoken word vocals to the EP's other original production, the acid-fired electro filthiness that is "5 Min". On the flipside you'll find two tasty re-edits of tracks from the Dark Entries catalogue: a dub-tinged, dancefloor-friendly take on Solid Moon's spacey "Destination Moon" and a rolling, club-ready tweak of X-Ray Pop's quirky electronic bubbler "La Machine a Rever".

Her Needs
Her Needs (hand-numbered heavyweight clear vinyl 7")
Cat: MW 042. Rel: 28 Mar 13
  1. Her Needs (1988)
  2. Her Needs (1999)
Review: Primitive Brumbeat is the order of the day from Minimal Wave on this weighty seven inch presentation of early Karl O'Connor material. Recorded under the Sandra Plays Electronics banner, Her Needs presents two versions of the same track from different periods of O'Connor's musical development and provide further enticing historical evidence of one of techno's most illuminating figureheads. Those who indulged in the brilliant White Savage Dance 12" from Downwards from late 2011 will be all over the DIY odes to O'Connor's childhood heroes such as DAF and Liaisons Dangereuses here. The 1999 version in particular which originates from the same recording sessions that ended in the seminal Diversion Group release A Man Has Responsibilities.

  3. Carousel (4:18)
  4. Over (3:14)
  5. Levitate (3:57)
  6. Folded Hands (4:47)
Review: It's no wonder Idee Fixe references Synth Britannia in the notes for this debut album from Sauna. Nodding to a BBC documentary that charts the genesis, and subsequent chart rise of synth pop across the UK, while in many ways what's here feels far removed from the retro-futurism of The Human League and peers, there's a DIY atmosphere that more than bridges the gap. Natural talent making raw ideas sound machine tight.

'Carousel' is the perfect example. Opiate lyrical delivery and loose, low-slung rhythm bely the taught framework holding everything together. 'Over' matches for sharpness, taking the tempo down a notch and upping the glittering effects that make this entire record a kind of rhythm & blues-electronic hybrid, only getting deeper and more engrossing on 'Levitate' and 'Folded Hands', like a much more accessible, poppier offspring of Silver Apples.

  4. Petrol (version 1985) (2:45)
Review: Aside from the wide spectrum of gorgeous post-punk and italo material that Dark Entries have been reissuing as of late, they've been earning some serious points from our end for their revival of so much material from Australia's Severed Heads. While the band are up there as one of our favorites from the 1980's, Dark Entries have picked exactly the right 12"s to reissue; "Lamborghini" is incredibly contemporary in sound, and it's subtle 4/4 kick allows its mild melodies and odd acoustics to fit above pretty much any house tune today. The same goes for "Petrol", a mild-tempered dance tune with minimal background vocals and a whole load of filter-attack quality. So recommended...

  3. On Reflexion (6:10)
  4. Sargasso Sea (1981 demo) (7:58)
Review: Amongst minimal wave and alternative synth-pop enthusiasts, short-lived London band Shoc Corridor has an excellent reputation. Although they released a pair of albums and a gaggle of singles in 1983 and '84, it is '82 debut single A Blind Sign that gets collectors drooling. On this Dark Entries reissue, it's easy to see why. Flipside cut "Sargasso Sea", a fantastically spaced-out combination of heavily dub influenced post-punk bass, minimalist drum machine hits and liquid electronics, is particularly special, while "On Reflection" is a fine slab of swooning, near Balearic electronica. The title track, a Gary Numan-esque chunk of mutant synth-pop that bizarrely includes some jangly acoustic guitars amongst the arpeggio bass and twittering synthesizer melodies, is also inspired.

Cat: HOS 612COLOUR. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. Harm In Hand (5:17)
  2. Damage (5:07)
  3. Death Of Decadence (4:29)
Review: Longtime techno innovator Silent Servant finds himself on the cult Hospital Productions to close out this year in visceral fashion. 'Harm In Hand' is many things - dark wave synth and jittery techno and it even has a hint of jerking EBM rhythms. It's a trip back to the future on a pulsing wave of menace. 'Damage' then cuts more loose, with spraying synths and crashing hits trapping you in dystopia and 'Death Of Decadence' bring all manner of raw textures, twisted synth lines and stark drums to a line techno groove.

Violence & Divinity
  1. Silent Servant - "Speed & Violence"
  2. Silent Servant - "Cut Unconscious"
  3. Broken English Club - "Divinity"
  4. Broken English Club - "Delays"
Review: ** Repress ** If you've been keeping abreast of all things Minimal Wave this year, you'll probably have picked up on Veronica Vasicka hinting at a forthcoming split release from Silent Servant and Broken English Club, the new project from UK techno man Oliver Ho. We've certainly been eagerly awaiting it her at Juno HQ and it's great to see Violence And Divinity live up to and surpass these expectations! Silent Servant mans the A Side with two tracks that will be familiar to anyone that's been lucky enough to catch his live sets of late, indeed it's almost too easy to visualise the flashing strobes as the pummelling EBM lines of "Cut Unconscious" unravel and beat you down. The two accompanying productions from Ho's Broken English Club dovetail nicely, but veer off into more wave orientated territory, with "Divinity" sounding quite like some of the earlier material put out by In Aeternam Vale. In a word superb.

Hotaru Edits
Cat: HSR 007. Rel: 01 Oct 20
  1. Vem Viver Pra Mim (5:18)
  2. Sera Que Eu To Pirada (4:34)
Review: According to the label itself, this is the first and only release of 2020 from Hello Sailor Recordings. It is a fine addition to its cultured 7" series and is a reissue of a 1995 release by short lived band Silvanna & A Maquina do Tempo. Still, it sounds utterly relevant today and is perfect for the Balearic mafia with the retro-future drums and tropical vocals of 'Sera que eu to Pirada'. On the flip-side, things get more urgent and uptempo with fierce drum work and more wild vocals. Early electro, proto-house, call it what you will, Brazilian producer Hotaru has edited both cuts in a fashion that will no doubt make these cult hits.

  1. That's The Body (5:35)
  2. On & Off (5:09)
  3. Mort Automatique (3:42)
  4. Frutta (7:32)
Review: Domestica continues its on-going trawl through the archives of S.M Nurse, an Amsterdam-based synth-wave trio who recorded a serious amount of material between 1980 and '83 before all but vanishing. That's The Body gathers together a quartet of dancefloor-friendly excursions. On the A you'll find the stylized minimal wave/electrofunk fusion of "That's The Body" and wavy, high-tempo thrust of "Off & On", both of which originally appeared on the band's earliest release. On the flip you'll find two previously unreleased versions of similarly vintage tracks: the alien synths, woozy B-52s vocals and tough machine drums of "Mort Automatique", and the hazy melancholy of "Frutta", which boasts a particularly druggy arpeggio bassline.

Don't Be Afraid
Cat: DE 117. Rel: 14 Apr 16
  1. Don't Be Afraid (6:15)
  2. Don't Be Afraid (instrumental) (6:14)
Review: By Italo-disco standards, where artists often got one-shot at glory, Some Bizarre was relatively successful. The studio duo released three 12" singles, with 1983 debut Don't Be Afraid being most coveted by Italo-disco collectors. Here it gets a timely reissue from Dark Entries. The original vocal version actually still stands up well, sounding a little like a quirky European tribute to early Depeche Mode, with a little Visage thrown in. The drum machine handclap-heavy percussion and Yazzoo-style synth riffs make it more potent than some Italo-disco of the period, and the vocal is much stronger - and less heavily accented - than many Italian records of the period. As usual, it's accompanied by a dub-style Instrumental on the flip.

Nous Savons Tout (12" + insert)
Cat: DE 124. Rel: 23 Jun 16
  1. Nous Savons Tout (5:36)
  2. Melodie Moderne (5:45)
Review: Those in the know regard Space Art as one of French electronic music's most under-appreciated acts. Active between 1978 and '81, Synthesizer obsessive Dominique Perrier and drummer Roger Rizzitelli were famed for releasing killer chunks of "cosmic pop", before performing them live wearing specially made silver space suits. "Nous Savons Tout", which was recorded and released in 1981, remains one of their most potent singles. Creepy, strange, hypnotic and undeniably cosmic, Perrier's trippy synth parts seemingly rise and fall over Rizzitelli's metronomic, proto-techno drums. Flipside "Melodie Moderne" has an altogether different feel, coming on like a pitched-down, cosmic disco take on the artier side of 1970s progressive rock.

Review: Jolly Discs is a London-based label operated by Guy Gormley (Enchante) and Rory Gleeson. Here, Gormley teams up with David C. Gray as Special Occasion for some oddball downtempo weirdness on the Ibiza Redux EP - which was without a doubt one of the more interesting records we had to review this week. Featuring balmy tropical reductions as heard on "Rampling", through to the chilled-out bedroom balearica of "Let Me In" to a moment of hazy and dubbed-out deepness as heard on "@ Rupies". Tip!

Review: German electronic duo Staatseinde return to Enfant Terrible with what is their third release for the label, and what is perhaps their most complete piece of music to date. Unlike previous works, Neue Zyklus spans into more complete frameworks, taking plenty of inspiration from both coldwave and classic electro-pop. In fact, tunes like "Min Min" or "Kosmos" have the Kraftwerk DNA running deep in their systems, but the execution is a magnificent blend of ulterior pop sounds, with influences coming from as far as industrial and techno. "Just Chaos", for example, is a full-blown dance bomb, and "Volar" is the sort of gear you'd see the likes of Stingray blasting out on two decks. For the electro enthusiasts.

  3. Night Falls (Mudegg Machine mix) (5:41)
  4. Night Falls (Mudegg Alpha Wave mix) (6:10)
Review: In 1988, German siblings Ernst and Hans-Peter Stroer joined forces with Howard Fine and Nadeen Holloway to produce Kunstdisco Seoul, an EP of synth-pop/neo-classical/Euro-house fusion. "Night Falls", a cheery tribute to mid-to-late '80s Prince, was arguably the EP's strongest moment. Here, it gets the reissue treatment, with the tasty original version being joined by a trio of fresh remixes. Mudegg serves up two interpretations: the jaunty electrofunk-goes-synth-pop flex of the "Machine Mix" and the Balearic nu-disco inspired "Alpha Wave Mix". While these are both fine, the version that really stands out comes from German boogie revivalists First Touch. Their take - an authentic tribute to glistening NYC synth-boogie complete with vintage synthesizers and clattering drum machines - is almost worth the entrance money on its own.

  4. Waterfalls (7:55)
Review: Following up great releases by Jack Pattern and Hansen Windisch, Lustpoderosa now presents Leipzig based kosmische-kraut-punk live act Syncboy - who is said to have recorded these tracks live at an infamous squat in Zurich. From stunning melodic ambient journeys such as "Stolpern" through to slow burning psychedelic epics like "Green Market" or "Kiss An Elephant" respectively, or the po-faced cold wave inspired closer "Waterfalls". Recommended for fans of Vactrol Park, Vermont or Benedikt Frey. The German producer sure has a diverse repertoire musically and we're certainly intrigued by what Bodo Hansen has in store next for 2018.

Review: Dark Entires continue to lead the current cold wave and synth scenes from the front, this time by reissuing genre giants Severed Heads's debut album Clean from 1981. This version comes with liner notes by band member Tom Ellard plus photos and press clippings from the period that make it even more essential. Musically, of course, it is a unique mix of synth-heavy post-punk mixed with industrial rhythms and violins that groan and moan. The textures are rough and confrontational and the album has often been referred to as 'ugly' for that reason. 25% of all proceeds for the Clean reissue will go towards the Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities in Australia.

Review: It has now become the custom to receive a mouth-watering reissue from Dark Entries on a weekly basis. These guys have become the certified masters when it comes to resurfacing rare and experimental music form the '80s, and their latest treasure comes from West London's Shoc Corridor, a band who specialized in synth-pop and coldwave. Experiments In Incest was their debut LP, originally out on indie label Shout, and while the release covered that era's typical influences, Shoc Corridor went that little bit further into the realms of Kraftwerk-like electronics and synth manipulation. "Khartoum" has to be the masterpiece on here, a gorgeous drum-machine journey accompanied by subtle Arabic voices, warm bass, and a seductive swarm of synth flutes. "In An Empty Room" is the other stunner on here, and its glitchy 606 beats and ominous sonics would fit right at home on pretty much any Editions Mego release nowadays. This is special, don't miss it.

Review: Berlin based Serbian duo Sixth June present their third full length, following up last year's terrific release "Virgo Rising" which also appeared on local imprint aufnahme + wiedergabe. Visual artist Laslo Antal and actress Lidija Andonov are at the forefront of the resurgence of darkwave, and now present to you Without A Sign - a collection of demos and unreleased tracks. Although recognisable as demos, it's not so much the roughness in sound that distinguishes them but the differences in instrumentation, arrangements and vocals as heard on the minimal, beat-free take on "Back For A Day" and the morose and solemn version of "Knife In The Water". Recommended.

Review: The name Roger Semsroth will be eminently familiar to fans of monotonal, bleep laden techno thanks to his canon of material as Sleeparchive for his own label, Tresor, Repitch and more. Prior to becoming the staple of Berlin techno he now is, Semsroth was creating child like melodies and toy tones as Skanfrom, a project which now returns to Jason Amm's Suction Records for the first time in 12 years. Combine themes tunes and motifs from the original Zelda video game with the sounds of older Rephlex and Skam Records and you are somewhere close to understanding what Postcards, this new Skanfrom album, sounds like.

Review: Dark Entries are no strangers to profiling the prolific work Piscataway duo Mike Mangino and the late Chris Shepard committed to tape as Smersh, issuing a compilation of their material in late 2012 called Cassette Pets. It's fair to say a lot more people know Dark Entries now but might not be that familiar with Smersh so this new Super Solid Heavy Waste collection is a fine introduction to the US outfit. Reflecting the more beat-focused side to Smersh, the tracks were recorded between 1983 and 1993, covering the duo's most prolific period up to the year before Shepard passed away, with just "Under Your Hoop" having previously appeared on vinyl as part of the 1990 LP Emmanuelle Goes To Bangkok. Listening through it's no surprise Smersh appeared on the Borft label operated by Scandinavian pranksters Frak - there are definite sonic parallels between them.

Review: It's easy to feel a sense of trepidation when bands announce a new album after years away from the release schedule. When that band is synth pop, minimal and new wave pioneers Soft Cell, and the album is their fourth, Cruelty Without Beauty, coming some 18 years after its predecessor, those concerns are heightened. A stellar legacy is such a terrible thing to waste for the sake of trying out new ideas.

Arriving in 2002, Cruelty... marked a fittingly strong reformation for the band at the time. The version of Frankie Valli's 'The Night' works better than anyone could have predicted, 'Together Alone' is dark dancefloor opera at its best. 'All Out of Love' is disco punk goodness, and the infectious electro-pop-funk of 'God Shaped Hole' is a marvel. That's before we come to supercharged tech-trance on 'Somebody, Somewhere, Sometime'. Put simply, if you missed it then this red vinyl gatefold package needs attention now.
