Even After All (Suckaside remix)
Gorilla Witness
Review: Since 2021, Suckaside - aka. ghetto-funk superstar B-side and funky DJ Sucka Timmy - have been prolific in their steady but healthy stream of releases in the realm of bespoke beats, centring on hip-hop, breakbeat and funk edits. Though mostly a digital affair, at least four vinyl records from the outfit have been released, and now this new one, 'Even After All', can be considered a part of that repertoire. Most prominently on this release comes a fresh fremix of the Finlay Quaye's 1997 hit 'Even After All', which was featured on his debut album Maverick A Strike.

Review: This record comes at a sad time, as Marlena Shaw passed away in January 2024, the New York born soul singer with her unmistakable voice leaving a long list of amazing credits and performances when she departed. This magnificent double 7" focuses on her early years in the late 1960s, work she did on the highly influential Cadet label just before she moved to Blue Note. 'California Soul', 'Liberation Conversation', 'Let's Wade In The Water' and 'Woman Of The Ghetto' are all soul classics by the late songbird, and all gathered togethere here into one unmissable EP.

Loleatta Disco Flip
Review: Expert record collector, skilled DJ, Moodyman collaborator and beatmaker Andres aka DJ Dez is back not long after the release of his last album with a new 7" on David A-P's Hot Pot Records. He opens up this one with 'I Can't Understand It' which has the exact sort of dusty drums and subtle hip-hop stylings to the groove that you would expect of this storied groove specialist. It will get the floor popping off in no time and on the flip, he shows off his skills on the MPC by chopping up 'Loleatta Disco Flip' with plenty of hefty drum work and a sprinkling of percussion that keeps whitings moving. Another irresistible drop from the Detroit mainstay.

Lovely Day (Studio Rio instrumental version)
Review: A decade ago, German brothers Frank and Christian Berman created a genuinely overlooked masterpiece: an album that combined classic vocal and instrumental performances from soul, jazz and funk performers (extracted from multi-track tapes of the original recordings) with new Brazilian-flavoured backing tracks featuring some of Brazil's most famous and storied musicians. The album, credited to Studio Rio, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' that's arguably even sunnier and more positive than the great man's original soul recording. It's a genuinely brilliant version, all told, and one that sounds like a summer festival and end-of-night anthem in the making. Mr Bongo thinks so - hence this must-have 7" single that pairs the vocal version with a previously unreleased instrumental take.

Review: This is the third installment in the Local Sugar Diggers Series from Scruniversal in which old and rare records from the label head's friend's collections get reworked and edited. This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. This one has romantic sax notes and gentle grooves with jazzy keys finishing it in style.

Review: Smoove AKA Jonathan Scott Watson brings us Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride for the most recent Wack Records release. The producer is known for using his cut up style of east coast flavor. On the A-side, 'Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride' uses Pharcyde tracks and edits them seamlessly like a DJ would. Focusing in on the original instrumentals, he creates a jazzy sound with them. 'Summer Cyde' expands upon this theme while using the all-time classic 'Passin Me By' in the mix. This is like having a dub plate of Pharcyde cuts to your own personal bag. Sounds like these will never get old.

Review: Moar, the stage name for French producer Jerome Potin, takes us on a musical journey to Brazil with his Brazil Party EP. This captivating fusion of Latin, funk, and soul exudes a vibrant energy that transports listeners to the heart of a lively Brazilian fiesta. The track opens with a strong vocal, its island-infused melodies weaving a tapestry of exotic rhythms. Moar's skillful blend of funk and disco elements creates an infectious groove that propels the music forward. The B-side is even more smooth (a cover version of 'Beijo' by Earth Wind and Fire) with the Latin aura and a disco euphoria that is unmatched. The result is a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshingly modern, capturing the essence of Brazilian musical traditions while infusing them with a contemporary flair.

On his latest reissue, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne testifies to over 20 years of hitmaking with a standalone 7" edition of his remix of Ramsey Lewis' 'Sun Goddess', first released on Vortex in 2023. Whereas Lewis' original 70s funk version is a sweet and sunkissed headboard-licker with a simple backbeat, Browne prefers to cant things dubwise, swapping the aforementioned out for a phat dotted stomp. Clock the new pairing with Browne's version of Grover Washington's jazz-funk classic 'Mister Magic'.

On this 7” comes a smoked-out, heads-down version of ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ by Wu-Tang, flipping the song instrumentally towards a mood of melodrama and vacillatory tension-release; the B contrasts with a soft-bellied version of Lou Reed come A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Take A Walk On The Wild Side’ aka. Review: Way back in 1993, when his career was still in its infancy, Chicago great Roy Davis Jr donned an alternative alias, The Believers, and delivered a 12" on Strictly Rhythm: 'Who Dares To Believe In Me?' It was something of a club smash, with Ministry of Sound issuing it in the UK a year later with a swathe of new mixes. This Groovin' Records reissue boasts a trio of mixes from the original U.S 12". On the A-side you'll find the original mix, a warm, spine-tingling slab of piano-rich New York style house topped off by snaking, delay-laden saxophone lines and an inspirational spoken word vocal courtesy of Davis. Over on the reverse, Davis' own 'Just Living High Mix' - a breezier, jazzier and more colourful affair - is followed by Mind Readers' tougher, chunkier and heavier revision, which is in effect a proper dancefloor dub.

With an extra focus on gangster rap, the label offers a classic on each side of a 7". Their sixth release has a couple of killers on it! 2pac and Dr.Dre's 'California Love' really needs no introduction. Funky Feeling
Feel The Heat
Review: For the seventh release on the all-limiteds Florence Funk imprint, we're met with two rare gems of the nu-funk and soul variety from Florence, the one themself. On the A, 'Funky Feeling' impresses with its dynamic yet still crunchy bottling of the funk, with all its *je ne sais qoui* intact, and in which occasional Omar Santana-style cut-ups can be heard, to giggle-inducing effect. The B, meanwhile, brings us the 'Heat' and insists we 'feel' it, but we hardly need to be told, as we're willing partners in this dance; this track, like the one before it, places its kicks and snare-clap layers front and centre, retaining the central sample but encouraging an extra danceable flavour, not usually heard on original disco recordings.

Review: Sardinia's finest, Sound Exhibitions, come through with another exclusive record into which the disco enjoyers among us may, if not must, sink their teeth. Made up entirely of sampled grooves from the deepest depths of Afro funk - and serving as a neat counterpart to their recent 'Disco Tape' series - an unknown hand, or collection of hands, make quick, choppy work of boxy drum breaks, six-string highlife bursts, raggy piano riffs and cymbal-happy breakdowns, which verge on the drawn-out side. All killer; once again, Sound Exhibitions let the curls set naturally.

Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community are a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45 RPM format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

Review: Sunsay & The Soul Surfers' cover of William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is a smooth and classy rendition of the 1974 original. The funk and soul influences are evident in the laid-back groove and sultry vocals, creating a timeless and sophisticated sound. With Massive Attack's 1991 cover also gaining recognition, this song has become a staple in the genres of funk and soul. The 7' vinyl reissue from 2024 remains faithful to the original release, capturing the essence of the track in its entirety. The B-side features the instrumental version, providing musicians and DJs with a versatile tool for sampling and remixing. 'Be Thankful For What You Got' serves as a reminder to appreciate the things we have, both big and small, and to find contentment in the present moment.

Review: Greg Foat is a London-based keyboardist, composer, bandleader and DJ. Foat’s latest full-length record displays the musician’s lifelong, self-described “love-hate relationship” with the keys, which he says began in childhood, when he fell off a piano stool at his aunt’s house. A domestic homage, 'Spider Plant Blues' fittingly pays tribute to two houseplants that sit on Greg’s bedside tables, and move periodically depending on his whims; ‘Spider Plant Blues’ is an evening high-flyer for electric piano, unbothered drums and backing strings, while ‘Snake Plant Shuffle’ is a darker and drier organism backed by arpeggiating sytnhy blossomings in the stereo mix.

The title number is a cover version of the yacht rock classic 'Georgy Porgy', with Nautilus' version heard performed alongside UK-based vocalist songwriter and vocalist John Turrell, one half of Smoove & Turrell, and German legend Toni-L. Theirs is a slick and maximised rendition. Originally released in 1982 by the Chicago soul group Maxx Traxx, the records are scarce for a small price. When word got around that the record would get reissued, it sparked interest from Another Taste to do a cover for the flip side and honour the event, an excellent homage to the original while injecting their own creativity and showmanship. Impossible to choose a favorite, let's just enjoy both excellent pieces of spacey funk music. This edition comes on purple 7".

Review: As E Live, Eli Hurwitz is such a big part of the Star Creature Universal Vibrations family that they gave him his own sub-label, Elivity Records. His latest fantastic 45 doesn't appear on either of those imprints, but rather parent label Tugboat Editions. For those who like authentic-sounding revivalist boogie, we'd recommend picking this up - both tracks are re-inventions of old tunes with E Live's colourful, synth-powered twist. Check first 'Make Me Move', where glossy female vocals rise above a squelchy bassline, shimmering synths and unfussy drum machine percussion. Even better though is Hurwitz's flip-side cover of Skyy classic 'Here's To You' - a boogie gem that he re-invents as as a deeper, smoother and dreamier slab of neo-boogie squelchiness.

Review: Producer Soul Supreme is back with another 7" record, delivering two new phat'uns to that subsection of fans who prefer things on the wonkier side. Following earlier, acclaimed tributes the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Mos Def, the new 'Dues and Don'ts' b/w 'Fraud Fades' 45 features two, all-original jazz-funk groovers by the Amsterdam-based keyboardist and producer. The former track burns slowly, carefully building up around a harpsichord improv, Herbie Hancock style, coming heavy-set by a thick and booming drum backing that soon enough late-blossoms into a cinematic, stringed soaring-on-high. The latter track pays complementary homage to the funk drum breaks of yore, with the central drum line around which the track is built echoing Serge Gainsbourg or Clyde Stubblefield, albeit making conspicuous its own electronically sequenced, not entirely live-performed, feel.

These two classics take the form of the DJ Premier-produced banger 'N 2 Gether Now' from US shock nu-metal dudes Limp Bizkit, featuring legendary rapper and stoner Method Man. Review: Rome's Maledetta Discoteca Records present their latest pride and joy, an impeccable emulation by the Neapolitan Funkool Orchestra of the indelible sigla (aka single) style of Italo disco popular throughout the 1970s. With the creation of an anthem in mind, the idea for 'Maledetta Discoteca' (taking its namesake from the label) and 'Tiene 'O Tiempo' was born after the musicians found time and space to scour their own 7" vinyl vaults, noticing for the first time that many of the singles they'd collected over time were in fact theme songs from TV and radio shows. With lead vocals from Valentina Conte, the A-side's lyrics deal thematically with the legendary disco club La Discoteca, while the B is just as insouciant and effortless, adding more spice and horn section to the brew.

After a long hiatus on the albums front before a return to the limelight with a follow-up Ninja Tune LP in 2001, these guys nonetheless remained surely active on the 7"s circuit, which has sustained them since then. Little did we know or predict, however, that there existed a part two to the same track, which is essentially an instrumental version of the original 1993 track. On the B comes a fresh funker formerly released under the alias Mighty Continentals, with the band's Bo Baral laying down a rare solo guitar situation and singing about, well, god knows what.

The hush-hush project has been serving up occasional must-have re-edits for a while, with some of their earliest releases becoming in-demand items on the second-hand market. 'Por Favor', which opened the mystery editor's first EP in 2021, is probably the most sought-after scalpel job of the lot. It's a light-touch rework of a gorgeous slow-motion and sun-splashed Latin cover of a Bobby Caldwell classic - the kind of thing that disco, soul and Balearic heads will love. This reissue presents two new tweaks: a slightly shortened (but no less gorgeous 7"-mix), and a stripped-back, bass-heavy and delay-laden 'dub mix' that's especially essential. Don't sleep!

'Refuse' is an original cut made with O.Love, a renowned turntablist and vocalist and notable subject of DJ City's popular 'Turntablism Meets Soul Music' documentary. Vampi Soul first welcomed the Latin Soul king to the label two decades back, facilitating the release of his 2005 album Call My Name. The pre-release singles for the album were 'Chick-A-Boom' and 'Cycles Of You', packed onto a single 7"; these quickly became DJs' favourites and have thus since remained long out of print. As it was twenty years ago, 'Chick-A-Boom' is a simultaneously upbeat but ghostly track, with Bataan's vocals quadrupling up in a wall of sound while providing the vibe equivalent of a Jackie Chan flick. 'Call My Name', meanwhile, goes heavy on the clavichord and synth whistle, as Bataan revels in a funereal theme, dancing, thundersticking into the great beyond.

Review: P-Vine has got a couple of treasures up its sleeve for you here with a newly remastered reissue of The Mighty Ryeder's single 'Let There Be Peace'. This has never before been put out on its very own 45rpm and the original single is a much sought after and expensive gem, with the B-side featuring Muro aka King Of Diggin's 'Evil Vibrations', a tune best known as a sample source for De La Soul on their 'A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays'. Flip this new version over and you will find an edit of it that is just as compelling.

Say She Sh - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love"
Jim Spence - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love"
Review: Say She She is the psychedelic soul group from Brooklyn that's exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and the pleasure of touring Europe and North America, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Authentic and organic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 attempt at foraying into disco 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' wasn't received amazingly at the time, but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is zany and expressive against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This 7" contains both Spencer's original track and the interpretation by the trio, pressed on white vinyl.

Review: Twilight is the latest piece by long time DJ, producer and remixer, Dominic Dawson. The Japanese label Flower, has released this single to 7" complete with a remix for the second side. The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Both versions have their place in any house setlist and will set the tone for any eclectic DJ set. With the DJing background Dominic has, he is a great guide to setting the mood with music. Like the title artwork suggests, this is perfect music to watch the sun go down to.

Review: One of a throng of new releases to be pushed by the veritable assembly line that is Sound Exhibitions, 'Mutual Sensation' by Klima Project and El Sastre is a testament to the rich diversity of the Afro-funk genre, not least when it is fused with house. Both emerging talents from Spain, this dream team are an unmistakably apt pairing, their title track hooking us in with tritone Rhodes, pop-out FX, and transitory fills to die for. The B's 'See The Blues' gives us temporary synaesthesia, allowing us to transcend our temporary melancholy by way of murmured, sampled pep talks and digital arpy flourishes, set against a timbale-ing, bongo-ing forward march.

Just Like You (Paul Sitter DJ Friendly edit)
Review: After the enormously positive response to the first edition of the Prodigy edits, Dope Edits is back with a follow up 7". The Russian turntablist and DJ Paul Sitter is also a deft and experienced editor. A lover of all things hip-hop, it is natural for him to create urban renditions of rock and popular songs. These two tracks presented here originally remixed by the 90s techno act Prodigy's leader Liam Howlett. For the first side, Paul remixes Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life' into a bombastic alternate version that is sure to raise the roof and turn the heads of who hears it. For the second side, 'Just Like You' by Ian Brown is turned into a frenzied and futuristic version that is unique. Whether you know the original songs, you got to check these out.

Review: UV & Nenor have been on a hot streak of late with great outings on the likes of the Fossils label and now they keep it up with a red hot new drop on the brand new Massa label. This tidy 7" packs a punch with two jams that will work the floor. The first is a slow motion but irresistible dub-disco fusion with squelchy bass and nice colourful, warm, gooey chords with vocals from Ranking Levy. On the flip is 'Tookey', a futuristic electro vocoder jam that comes to life with vivid synths circling round the mix and an unusual sense of swing. From laid back session at home to steamy club use, both of these are useful jams.

Natural Life (part 2)
Review: Tramp Records come at us with an exclusive, ninja-lethal wax, chucked squarely in our direction: the debut 7" single from Natural Life lays down two extra-special instrumental jazz-funk cuts for our pleasure. Never heard before on the tiny label, and with little background info out there to scour (we're pretty sure it's not the same Natural Life as the upbeat funk band active throughout the 1990s), all that's left is to use our ears. Both versions of the eponymous track are essentially an obverse and inverse of the same theme, except for the fact that one is funky in the fast, riveting sense; the other in the slower, sultrier sense. Both are nonetheless rapid, to-the-point heaters, and can be easily deployed and exploited in many a party - or afterparty - context.

Review: The Ethiopian Brothers transport you to a vibrant fusion world where Ethiopian jazz, Afro drums and funk all collide. Released in 1972, this single showcases the band's mastery of traditional Ethiopian rhythms intertwined with elements of Western funk and soul. 'Ashadwa' exudes infectious energy and is driven by lively brass sections and mesmerizing vocals weaved into the dynamic arrangements next to wah way guitars and steamy sax. It is a real dancefloor heater while a version comes on the flip without the vocals.
