Review: One of those rarer projects that Keith Tenniswood and Andrew Weatherall worked on, Still My World comes from a request from the Italian fashion house Emigliano Zegna in 2002, who contacted tghe guvnor's label Rotters Golf Club in search of music for a show. The duo gathered up some tracks and 'Still My World' was born and although it was never a 'proper' album as such, Keith Tenniswood wanted to give the project a wider release and give it a proper blessing with its first vinyl edition here. The album spans many types of genres and ultimately is a great example of the wide range of taste that Andrew had and shared as a DJ.

Notably containing ten songs that were in total written over the course of ten years, the overarching mood is one of saying farewell and musing on the bittersweetness of loss. The English singer and notable Portishead member's solo efforts often operate with this affect, but Gibbons' latest is of special import, given the length of time over which these songs were crafted and occasionally performed over the years. Review: If ever there was a band destined to get the Analogue Productions treatment, it's surely Steely Dan. The go-to group for audioophiles, yacht-sailing dreamers and frankly everyone in the whole damn world, the Dan's highly-prized studio obsession deserves the finest possible fidelity. Originally released in 1980, Gaucho was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's swansong until reuniting in 2000. Musically, it was a departure for the group as they honed their compositions into more patient, atmospheric pieces which held down a mood instead of striving for dramatic sweeps and shifts, but that doesn't detract one jot from the might of tunes such as 'Babylon Sisters' and the eternally funky 'Glamour Profession'. Now those songs sound the best they possibly could thanks to this exacting reproduction.

Review: Celebrating its 20th birthday, British alt-rock group Keane's 'Hopes and Fears' was a transcendental piece of that iconic phase of Britrock/pop. The opening piano chords of 'Somewhere Only We Know' have become one of the most recognisable in the genre, if not for the alarming amount of emotional acoustic covers. It's not like you can't understand the popularity though, frontman Tom Chaplin's voice contains a quietly powerful vulnerability - a stubborn candle in a storm. Far from a one-trick pony, 'Everybody's Changing' is a home run of a track - for me probably one of the most nostalgic songs ever (Showing my age slightly...) Keane is a timeless class act, one of those bands you are guaranteed to love but not know the name of, for whatever reason. In this updated vinyl package, includes two discs with stunning hues of blue, the artwork has similarly been updated slightly. Review: Tinted Windows is the wondrously, almost hilariously cast supergroup comprising guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame, Taylor Hanson of Hanson, bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, and Cheap Trick's Bun E. Carlos. Brace yourself for a reminder of this ingenious grouping this 2024: the debut self-titled album was first released in 2009 and though it intended to synergise each founding members' successes as part of their earlier projects, also did fantastically well at portraying a contemporary take on the 70s and 80s pop rock quintessence. Lead singles 'Nothing To Me' are instantly reminiscent of Ferris Bueller in the drop-top, though all come dashed, even sprinkled, with a hint of 90s pubic power punk a-la 'Stacy's Mom', as we should expect from a Fountains Of Wayne adjacent.

Review: The ongoing success of the musical showcasing his work, the terrific (and very Sheffield-centric) Standing At The Sky's Edge, has done much to remind listeners of Richard Hawley's qualities as a songwriter. He's genuinely one of Britain's best of the last few decades, though the varied ways in which those are presented has not always gone down well with listeners. On In This City They Call You Love - another reference to beloved Sheffield - Hawley returns to the smooth, string-laden sound which marked out his most commercially successful album, Coles Corner. His voice - deep, rich and at this point bordering iconic - naturally takes centre stage on a set packed with touching and thoughtful ballads. It's a winner, but then the majority of his albums are.

Review: In the depths of the turbulent 1970s, amidst the corruption and inequities of Brisbane, Australia, emerged a formidable force - The Saints. Eternally Yours, their seminal second album, marked a departure from their debut's raw aggression, showcasing a kaleidoscope of influences that transcended the boundaries of punk. While their debut, I'm Stranded, embodied the quintessential punk ethos, Eternally Yours explored a more eclectic palette. Review: DIIV is an indie band from Brooklyn who first started recording in 2010 together. The band is a mix of post rock, lo-li, Indie with some shoegaze elements. The band has garnered some strong success for an indie band with their last album reaching the Billboard top 200 album list. Frog In Boiling Water is their fourth album and reminds many of 90s UK bands like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Their first single 'Brown Paper Bag' was released on the same day the new album was announced just a few months ago. Review: Aussie rockers The Church embark on a time travellers' dialogue with future band Eros Zeta And The Perfumed Guitars on their eponymous new crossover album. According to the album's liner notes, "Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars were formed in 2048 in Antarctic City in Antarctica," toured the post-war world incessantly during the early 2050s and were "troubled with personnel and substance abuse problems culminating in Eros Zeta's addiction to Sky." Time will tell what the latter statement means, but apparently, no grandfathers were retroactively killed in the recording of this album. Ostensibly a showcase of the latter band's music, this is apparently by no means an album's worth of Church material at all, but it uncannily shares their prolific, steamy prog ruminations to a T. It's almost as if a case of temporal identity theft has occurred. Try not to feel the secondhand deja vu; we bet you can't.

Review: Nick Cave & The Bad seeds present their first album in five years, Wild God, following 2019's Ghosteen. A testament to the band's recent spell of happiness, the stylistic and emotional complexity of Wild God is reflective of the complex emotional state a songwriter can find themselves in after a period of pain and tumult. It is indeed a "complicated record" (Cave's own words), with every cameo from David Fridmann to Jonny Greenwood in tow, conjuring up gothic romantic fantasies ("he flew through the city like a prehistoric bird" and "she died in a bedsit in 1993") and candidly heartfelt instrumentation, but with a kooky edge. Though the singles released so far err on the side of convention, our inside intel indicates the presence of an overall rock-genre-bending record elsewhere, owing to a happy period of reconnection and creative synergy experienced by the band.

Review: Following their draconic sixth studio album Sealed And Icy, US megapop superstars Twenty One Pilots share their whopping, driving new album Clancy, marking the end of the multi-album narrative first introduced in the band's breakthrough album Blurryface. The Columbus, Ohio based duo of Tyler Joseph nad Josh Dun are two of the most successful artists of their generation, owing to their distinct blend of quick-quipping raps and stadium-bound electronic rock production. If lead single 'Overcompensate' is anything to go by, Clancy will continue to regale the tale of the Pilots' longstanding concept narrative of Clancy, the central character first articulated in their 2018 album Dema, and deals in themes of angst, powerlessness and (over)compensatory superpowers like psychokinesis endemic to the lore. Review: It's been a full five years since Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released an original full-length LP. Their last was Ghosteen, the final of three albums to complete the triptych that also included Push The Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016). This makes Wild God something of a special one, marking the first time Cave and company have struck out on an isolable creative limb in over a decade. Unlike the heartfelt grief-stricken groundswells of the previous three albums, Wild God is an avowed 'deeply and joyously infectious' album that marks a return to Cave's reputable, searching, soul-stirring songwriting form; full of the same idiosyncrasies that formed the greatness of latter-day albums like Dig, Lazarus, Dig, albeit with a crazed edge that has perhaps never been heard before.

Review: A veritable sonic warhammer in the unconscious sub-terrain that is British hard rock, Jerusalem's self-titled record was first released in 1972, yet came reissued in 2021 via Lion Productions in the run-up to its almost full half-century anniversary. Fronted by Deep Purple's very own Ian Gillan, Jerusalem's brand of proto-heavy metal was raw and razor-edged in sound, with very little effects or treatment applied to its instrumental parts, a flex that signifies pure talent. Gillan's vocals on the likes of 'Frustration' and 'Primitive Man', the album's highlights, are snarly but tempered by a real 'down for it' emotion, as propulsive electric strums abound in the surround mix, nailing the album's overarching theme of sexuality and tantalisation.

Review: It appears that Taylor Swift has caused somewhat of a revolution, as since the highly publicised feud with her former record label led the pop megastar to re-record and re-release her entire back catalogue, several other artists appear to be following suit by realising there lay a method ahead to reclaim their art. Review: Perhaps the most abstract, clangorous and genre-defying entry in the formidable Royal Trux catalogue, 1990s Twin Infinitives is a sprawling, tactile odyssey punctuated by Neil Hagerty's acerbic guitar stabs and Jennifer Herrema's sleazy vocal free association. Through the thick squalling gauze witch Hagerty and Herrema superimpose on each track, ghosts of A/B song form emerge and disintegrate, with blues licks and disarmingly gentle croons offset by rumbling mechanical loops and sonic shrapnel. It really feels like the ground zero, the most amoebic and uncompromising launchpad for what would become the Royal Trux sound. Highlights include the Henry Flynt-esque 'Ice Cream', the cavernous flute peals of 'Osiris' and the rollicking, fuzz-damaged 'Glitterbust'. One of the best from one of the best!

Review: Sony records is celebrating 50 years in music in 2024 and coincidentally, Diamond Dogs by David Bowie is also sharing that same timeline. Considered by many, to be the last album released of his glam rock period after disbanding his backup band The Spiders From Mars. With his career direction in some question and longtime guitarist Mick Ronson gone, you have arguably one of the interesting studio albums of his career. Led by the hit 'Rebel Rebel', the album marked a turn for Bowie's songwriting having been inspired by a recent interview he did for Rolling Stone with WIlliam S Burroughs. An admirer of Burroughs' working methods and his 1964 novel Nova Express, Bowie revealed he had begun using Burroughs's "cut-up" technique as a way for inspiration. Ultimately, Diamond Dogs is most important for being the transition point from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke which catapulted Bowie's success in the United States. While only having one modest hit from the album, Diamond Dogs was still a big success. In hindsight, it would also help establish David Bowie as an artist where fans wanted to hear his entire work and not just a single's worth and to Bowie, that showed that his personality was winning over his audience and that his new direction was a good choice.

Review: Everyone remembers the saying about slow-boiled frogs, but what actually happens when you attempt to boil one in real life? Surprise, surprise, modern science counters the aphoristic claim with a charge of falsehood; that real-life frogs do indeed tend to jump out of boiling water regardless of the time it takes to boil one. New York slowcore and shoegaze favourite DIIV's latest album Frog In Boiling Water seems to recall this mood as much, propelling us into action with the femural puissance of an amphibian's hunkers, despite the album's consistent plodding, its dourness, its steadiness, its slow boil. Naturally, in light of the boiled frog analogy's usual connotations, the album is nominally about the contradictions of late stage capitalism and overwhelming technological advance, with its sound evoking the feeling of bowling into a non-risk-assessed future, and the bittersweet sense of bliss and personal confrontation this evokes at every turn.

Review: 'I'm Totally Fine With It Don't Give A Fuck Anymore' reads the WhatsApp message on the front cover of the upcoming album of the same name by Scottish duo Arab Strap. Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton have been on a blazing nonstop run ever since they reunited the group in 2019. Confronting conspiracy theories, online addiction, and societal decay, the lead single 'Bliss' is a steady reminder of Arab Strap's multi-generational appeal - "It's about women being terrorized online; it's about cowardice and bigotry. It's about how we expose ourselves on social platforms while hiding alone at home. But you can dance to it too!" Moffat said on the press release. As the haunting melodies intertwine with Moffat's gritty regional vocals on the 15-track album, dimly lit dive bars and sketchy alleyways come to mind and not the cyberspace dystopia that many other musicians would go to. It's a unique take on a subject that needs unique takes, an explicit piece of sang prose in an age of censorship. Just the cover alone lets you know that Arab Strap is not going to be added to your easy-listening playlist. The icing on the cake? The cheeky decision to make the disc a bright emoji yellow.
