Say That You Love Me
Cat: MXAK 001. Rel: 13 Apr 19
  1. Say That You Love Me (Danny Krivit 7" edit - Francois K remix)
  2. Say That You Love Me (Danny Krivit 7" edit - AK remix)
Review: Japanese singer-songwriter-producer Akemi Kakihara, better known as AK, is a huge star in her native country-where she's released 15 albums, many topping the charts, along with writing & producing for many other artists as well. Her first album featured a collaboration with close friend Brazilian pianist and composer Eumir Deodato-but she's probably most recognized internationally for Her composition "Say That You Love Me," originally a jazzy ballad, was remixed by Francois K and Eric Kupper in 2001 and released on New York label King Street Sounds. The remix soon became a staple at Body & Soul in both New York and Japan, ultimately topping the dance charts around the world and emerging as the top house anthem in Japan over the next decade-as well as becoming King Street Sounds' all time biggest seller. (The song wasn't the only success story to bloom from this project: visiting Body & Soul for the first time in 2001 to meet Francois K and see and hear the crowd's reaction to the remix, when she also met DJ and party co-founder Danny Krivit. A romance between them blossomed, they married in 2008, and continue to reside in NYC.)

With 7" vinyl singles currently enjoying a renaissance, Krivit suggested AK revisit the landmark track to do another re-work of "Say That You Love" for Most Excellent Unlimited, something noticeably different from the original. AK's new version of her signature tune retains her silky vocal refrain that first seduced listeners, but adds a bubbly keyboard melody and a propulsive snare kick that turns it into a dance floor stomper. Krivit then edited down her new production and the Francois K mix for the first time on 7" release; he felt the song's King Street hit remix arrangement was very strong, so he did his best to maintain it's hit arrangement within the restrictions of a 5:30 min format for the flip side of the single. The result is a must-own 7" that sounds both classic and contemporary at the same time.

Les Mondes Engloutis (Psychemagik mixes)
Cat: MB 2028 XX. Rel: 06 May 19
  1. Les Mondes Engloutis (Psychemagik main mix)
  2. Les Mondes Engloutis (Psychemagik 5am mix)
Review: MB DISCO IS BACK After a break. we're ready with new releases. After heavy demand, we decided to press this little gem on vinyl. It features the stellar remixes from Psychemagik.

Named after an 80s French cartoon, this single is the product of Turkish producer Alico and his shady cohort, Cagri. The tune is a straight-up salad of vintage Eurodisco with lashings of Italo dressing. Evoking the likes of 'Droid' by Mito, Vangelis and anything by Hipnosis, this laconic sprawling synth-fest is saved from total retroville by a crisp modern electro-house bounce.

Stop (Dino Soccio remix)
Stop (Dino Soccio remix) (red vinyl 12" limited to 50 copies)
Cat: MS 61R. Rel: 08 Apr 19
  1. Stop (Dino Soccio remix)
  2. Stop (vocal Electronic version)
  3. Stop (Soul version)
Review: Valery Allington's 1982 debut single, "Stop", has long been considered an Italo-disco classic. Here it gets the reissue and remix treatment, with LA resident Dino Soccio's 2018 revision - first heard on a hush-hush edits EP - taking pride of place on side A. His version is pleasingly muscular and driving, underpinning the original's throbbing arpeggio style bass, sprightly electrofunk riffs and headline-grabbing vocals with heavy new drums. Also great is the vintage "Vocal Electronic Version" - a sleazier, bongo and kick-drum-driven affair rich in alien synth lines, two basslines (one squelchy, the other hypnotic and driving) and swirling chords. Also impressive is the sparser and slower "Soul Version", which includes a sneaky musical cap-doff to another Italo-disco classic.

  1. Beard In Dust - "At The Dawn"
  2. Tales Of Voodoo - "Sharky"
  3. Esen Gunduz - "Deve Gucu"
Review: When it comes to exotic, off-kilter edits, you'll struggle to find a stronger series than Jonny Rock's Disco Hamam. This fifth volume is every bit as essential as its predecessors. Beards In Dust claims the A-side with "At The Dawn", a tidy revision of a druggy and "chuggy" version of a blue-eyed psychedelic funk-rock roller that comes complete with some serious sing-along sections. The heady world of Turkish music - a constant source of inspiration at the Disco Hamam HQ - comes to the fore on the B-side. Tales Of Voodoo's "Sharky" is a deliciously percussive, dancefloor-friendly fusion of Middle Eastern exoticism, funk-rock guitars and heavy disco percussion, while Esen Gunduz's "Deve Gucu" is an even sweatier, Italo Disco-era stomper that sounds like something you'd have heard in Istanbul clubs circa 1985.

Review: The music of Chel White is celebrated in Automaton, a collection of mostly unreleased recordings from 1985 to 1991, by this innovative animator, film maker and visual artist.

Having studied music theory in grade school, White taught himself drumming and played in a new wave band until, in 1981, together with Dan Gediman, they formed the minimal wave duo Process Blue (Alternative Funk, 1985 / Dark Entries, 2018). Here their experimentation went way beyond playing drums.

His interest in industrial music, fostered in the late '70s and early '80s while working in factories as a way to put himself through college, informed his use of electronic instruments, tape manipulation, noise and unconventional percussion.

By 1985, as a now solo artist buoyed by newly affordable audio sampling technology, White tapped into his earlier teenage fascination with the art and films of both the Surrealist and Dada movements - in particular their disparate and fragmented imagery and sound - as a means to create striking new sonic palettes.

Science & Industry - a track largely influenced by Balinese monkey chanting and the consumer excess of American in the 1980's - is a clear example of "music collage". Photocopy Cha Cha, made for the short animation film Choreography for Copy Machine (Berlin International Film Festival, 1992 / Sundance Film Festival, 2001) moved his music into the realm of early multi-media.

Experimenting further, tracks like Liquid Shadows and Pensive provide minimalist moments, before the drone-like Dream #630 and Forest Song point to a future that included music video works (David Lynch/Thom Yorke).

Review: Singer, songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Desmond Coke's supremely rare, privately pressed, lo-fi, synth-soul fusion, Let's Chase The Sun is represented here in edited form. Painstakingly remastered from the original tapes, this self taught pianist, drummer and sax player condensed his musical experiences and dreams in to an opus on love and togetherness.

Desmond Coke alias 'Fatfingers' - named by fellow musicians due to improvisation and interpretation skills - began playing keyboards by ear at 15 and went on to a music career playing with the likes of Alton Ellis, Prince Fari, Barrington Levy, Dillinger, Don Cherry and Shara Nelson, as well as a gamut of the On-U Sound label's projects, including Creation Rebel, Dub Syndicate, Singers & Players and Mark Stewart + Maffia.

With an interest in reggae, dub, jazz, soul, meringue, gospel and garage, his sole album was a true fusion to create a brand new sound. Composed, arranged and produced by Coke, he worked with an array of seasoned musicians, including his own sisters Winifred (percussion / vocals) and Paulette Coke (percussion / DX-7 & M1 synthesisers).

Pressed on his own Saterlite Entertainments in 1989, Coke describes the album's purpose, "to get the message across to have focus, ambition, to dream and 'chase the sun'. That relationships are important, 'I need somebody' and naturally the chemistry is 'you and me'. Great relationships are about friendships and that it's ok to 'mesmerise a friend'. The most natural thing is to enjoy each other's company and to 'make a love child'. These good intentions and meanings, where love is the key." Some thirty years later Desmond's thoughts are as resonant today as then - Let's Chase The Sun.

Review: Another double dose of seven-inch action from the Art of Sedition crew, who once again offer up a quartet of floor-focused re-edits stretched across two dinky slabs of wax. The crew hits the ground running on the first disc, with MikeandTess' rolling, house style take on New Jersey Connection's 1981 cut "Love Don't Come Easy" offering guaranteed peak-time thrills and Mighty Mouse's punchy instrumental dub of Don Ray's "Got To Have Nothing" also hitting the spot. On the second disc, Lego Edit flexes his muscles with a locked in, house style take of Blackbyrds' bass-heavy classic "Rock Creek Park", before Bully Boy does his best Reflex impression on what sounds like a ground-up stems revision of Michael Jackson classic "PYT".
