Can't Stop Dancin'
  1. Can't Stop Dancin'
  2. Can't Stop Dancin' (instrumental)
Review: This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12" changing hands for significant sums online. Even if you're unfamiliar with it - and outside of record collecting circles, most people are - we'd recommend checking the sound clips of this first ever seven-inch reissue. 'Can't Stop Dancing' is particularly sweet and summery, with Jonnie 'Vibes' Lambert singing about his love of shaking his stuff atop spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. That tidy groove can be enjoyed further on the flipside instrumental mix, which makes excellent use of the original's female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.

Review: Here comes an 11-track comp that epitomizes the sound of Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy's renowned breakfast show. 'Balearic Breakfast' has been running on Worldwide FM for years now, beginning and running throughout the COVID-19 pandemic so as to soothe and placate the anxious, plague-ridden listener with island sounds, sunsoaked balearism, drizzly disco. Spanning a "hodge-podge of chillout, spiritual jazz, deep soul, percussive house, quirky disco" and much more, you can expect a heady and 'ahh'-inducing escape with this one.

Song For Ehi
Cat: CNPY 002. Rel: 27 May 22
  1. Song For Ehi
  2. Song For Ehi (Disco dub)
Review: You'd expect a collaboration between Columbia-based fusionist Bosq, Ibibio Sound System's horn section and vocalist Kaleta to be pretty darn good, and 'Song For Ehi' most certainly is. Inspired by a combination of classic Edo-funk, Afro-disco and reggae disco, the A-side original version delivers a near perfect mix of timbales-sporting dub disco grooves, reverb-laden lead vocals, Afro-funk guitar licks, Afrobeat-esque organ licks and punchy horns. The track's inherent dubbiness is further explored on the flipside revision, which adds extra layers of percussion and the kind of breathless dancefloor weight that marks out the greatest dub disco workouts. In a word: essential!

  2. Lost & Looking (Cosmodelica dub)
Review: Lady Blackbird's recent album Black Acid Soul was many things - a modern soul-jazz masterpiece for starters - but dancefloor-ready was not one of them. Because of this, the Los Angeles-based artist has decided to inaugurate a series of 'remix dubplates' featuring fresh revisions of cuts from the album. Number one in the series features two rubs from Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy under the Cosmodelica alias: a brilliant full-vocal remix in which spacey synth stabs, Clavinet sounds and clipped disco guitars rise above a sturdy dub disco groove, and a flipside dub that removes most of Lady Blackbird's fine vocal and emphasizes the trippy elements in Murphy's brilliant re-prodution (particularly the synthesizer sounds).

Review: Detroit mainstay Andres returns to MotorCity Wine Recordings with an anthemic 4 tracker entitled Sunday Kinda Love. For those that know, MotorCity Wine is the spot for Sunday parties, so we only thought it appropriate to have one of Detroit's most seminal producers highlight the vibe with this EP. On the A side is Andres's dusty house sound that we've all come to love, complete with bouncing basslines, slick vocal chops, and drums to turn out any dance floor. On the flip side Andres slows the tempo just a touch to highlight his chunky midtempo beatdown sounds, with "Rubin Samba" bringing a Latin flair and "Sunday Kinda Love" driving it all home. Essential Detroit music manufactured in Detroit and housed in a gorgeous vinyl package, TIP!

Review: The much loved and highly sought after Hot Toddy Remix of Never Gonna Reach Me is finally getting a long overdue vinyl repress from the original masters and artwork. It's no exaggeration to say that NGRM has become a bona fide disco classic since its first release that has stood the test of time. Crazy P band member Chris Todd took the original version from the band's Stop, Space, Return album and remixed it up for the dance floor adding disco drums, rhodes keys and arpeggiated synth sequences. On the flip side there is another sublime remix from Still Going, the New York duo best known for their output on DFA. All in all an absolutely essential addition to any record collection...

Review: We're used to hearing Horse Meat Disco set the peak of the night alight with their fierce and fabulous route through disco, house and Italo, but what happens after the dance? On their entry for the long-standing Back To Mine series Jamies Hillard, Jim Stanton, Luke Howard and Severino Panzetta take us deep into their collections for a blissful, soulful soundtrack to that cosy moment when we want to wind down after a big night out. There's still plenty of the groove-oriented magic we've come to expect from the crew, from Krivit editing Gwen McRae to Severino himself remixing Roisin Murphy, but as you'd expect this is also a voyage of discovery full of secret weapons, spread across two slabs of wax for your own mixing pleasure.

Review: Favorite Recordings founder Charles Maurice - initially better-known by his production alias Pascal Rioux - has long been regarded as a dusty-fingered crate digger, so his new compilation series, Fusion Global Sounds, is hotly anticipated. He says it will be an outlet for jazz-funk and fusion tracks of the 1970s and early '80s, mostly made by artists in different parts of the world whose fame never spread further than their own local scenes. You'll find numerous highlights on the series' debut, from the breezy, morning-fresh loveliness of Renato Anselmi's 'Hello Mr Acuvis' and the sun-soaked, afternoon shuffle of The 1960 Band's 'Keep That Same Old Feeling', to the dream pop-influenced sparkle of Otoshakers' 'Simpere Tu' and the righteous dancefloor hedonism of Sundance's 'Buster'.

Review: It's a while since we last heard from Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart's Afro-disco focused Violaaa project, so this surprise set of remixes of back catalogue tracks is more than welcome. Fittingly, three of the versions come from Hovart himself under different aliases. There's a fine, tropical-tinged, sun-splashed Violaaa revision of 'Tu Mens Divant Moi' that doffs a cap to zouk music, and two deep house-tinged Patchworks versions of classic cuts. The mix of the outfit's underground hit 'Spies Are Watching Me' is a brilliant alternative take on a familiar favourite (it certainly breathes new life into the track), while the samba-house-in-Ghana revision of 'Ben Bene La' is brilliant. Throw in a quality J Kriv deep nu-disco version of 'Ku La Foon' and you have an excellent EP of tasteful, club-ready cuts.

Mr K Edits: Action/World Famous

  2. World Famous
Review: Get your roller-skates on! For the latest in our long-running exploration of Mr. K's edit crates comes this pair of underground hits that rocked the legendary Roxy in early '80s New York City. As a resident DJ, Danny Krivit saw it all unfold in real time. "A lot of the hip hop played at Roxy's Friday night dance party was cutting edge for the dance scene," he recalls. Although hugely influential on new dance music being made, the hip hop records coming out were rarely in the groove enough for roller skating - the rest of the week, when Roxy's dance floor was turned over to the skaters, the music had to have the correct tempo and groove to keep the wheels turning. "These two songs were an unusual exception in that they were strong for both Roxy's Friday night dance party and Roxy's roller skating crowd," Krivit explains. Orange Krush were an essential part of the early hip hop scene, but are rarely acknowledged, probably because they only released this one single under their own name. Led by veteran Larry Smith, they performed all the music on the early Run-DMC albums, and were managed by Russell Simmons before he founded Def Jam. For this recording the group also brought in Maureen Reid, a session singer who had done backup vocals for Fatback Band. Predating Janet Jackson by half a decade, she sizzles with a delicious dressing down of a would-be Romeo: "I don't want to hear that you think I'm fine... I got eyes and I'd like to see / what it is you're gonna do for me!" Mr. K's edit preserves the signature drum intro and finally makes this very hard to find single more widely available on 7-inch.

Malcolm McLaren was a true impresario, a shrewd recognizer and organizer of talent whose own abilities, however, stopped at that point. As such, he relied on an entourage of musicians and energetic performers to bring his visions to life. In WHBI's World's Famous Supreme Team, a pair of radio hosts with an easy flow on the mic, he found a ready connection to the nascent hip hop scene in NYC. Now he just needed musicians to back them up, but not just any musicians... It had to be cutting edge. Enter the Art of Noise, a British band dedicated to exploring the latest technological innovations in music making. "World's Famous" is what happened when the two came together under McLaren's direction. Music that veers from highly musical, jazzy improv to block-rocking sampled drums and scratches is overlaid with the practiced patter of Sedivine and Just Allah, the eponymous Supreme Team themselves. Ditching the far too short album version that McLaren first released in 1983, Mr. K's edit is an extended take that adds a couple iconic vocal drops from other McLaren singles and allows plenty of room for Anne Dudley's suave piano solo ("Anne, bring in the organ!") and the groove, a perfect pulse for skating.

As usual, these cuts are virtually unfindable in their original 7-inch form and have been carefully remastered and edited for maximum utility and club-friendly sound.

Review: The Konduko series features Noel Williams (King Sporty) working with other artists and singers on the label's roster, and continues with the killer boogie 'You're In My Pocket' by Reanna Coleman.

While little is known about Ms Coleman - beyond the fact that she was an R&B singer who was part of Betty Wright's 'Miami Sound' backing troupe - here she is stepping up in front of the mic for a one off release - backed by an esteemed team of writers and producers including the legendary Tommy Stewart.

Stewart's standing in disco history is guaranteed by his classic eponymous solo album, and the boogie classic 'Bump And Hustle Music'. He has also written for the likes of Loleatta Holloway, Tamiko Jones, Mad Dog Department. Fellow writer Julian Chatman was an established composer in his own right, for Salsoul, T.K Disco and AVI Records.

All based in Florida, teaming up with Noel Williams was a logical step. Working with members of Stewart's own band, the marriage can be heard from the first bars. Williams' funk and JA influenced bass is pulled back and a laidback, horn-intersected boogie groove underpins Coleman's warm, gliding lyrics. Now a mega rarity, here it comes in vocal and instrumental, it is backed with the latest Discomix for the label, welcoming back digger, dealer and DJ, Nick The Record to create his own version. Gently cutting between versions, with deft dub touches to bring this latest Konduko delight up to date.

Review: Four new originals from French Berlin-based singer and JD Stella Zekri, whose low-range, buzzing vocals are lent happily to a selection of cloudy electronic Latin beats. Produced and co-written by Ed Longo, it draws heavily on the post-zouk and disco styles endemic to the 80s French underground; our choice bit is the offbeat boogizm heard on the sonic ponderance: 'Pourquoi (Why)'.

Review: Hailing out of the Rhythm Plate universe, Yse Saint Laur'ant is back with more of that fanciful house music he does so well. This latest drop on Vinyl Only leads in with 'Rivers', a beautiful warm-up track led by a powerful spoken word performance from an unknown source. 'Finality' is a smouldering, slow-build epic which finally releases in a burst of brass to get a big mass of bodies moving as the sunnier days hit and we head outdoors to dance. 'Your Man' is a dustier affair for the heads down crowd, 'Paradiso' slows things to a gentle murmur and 'Entrance To The Future' takes a sharp left turn into synthwave territory. If you like bags of personality in your house music, look no further.

Review: As usual, there's no confirmation as to who is behind this edition of the Semi-Skimmed Edits series, but as the previous volumes were the work of scalpel fiend James Greenwood, it's likely he's made these reworks, too. There's plenty to admire throughout, from the grandiose horn arrangements, starry instrumentation and club-ready jazz-funk grooves of 'Tea For Two', and the driving, heavily orchestrated disco-funk hedonism of 'Boogie Drunk', to the Chic-style guitar licks and sweaty drums of closing cut 'You Control Me', whose swirling, filtered breakdowns will do a terrific job in spiking energy levels out on the dancefloor.

Review: Utilising the same hard-to-pigeonhole approach as his previous (and excellent) Magic Carpet Ride compilation, Milagros Del Ritmo is effectively a showcase for the depth of DJ/producer Jose Manuel's record collection. That's no bad thing though, because the cuts on offer here - mostly European, but some Middle Eastern, and all made between 1988 and '91 - is full of arresting, ear-catching gems. For proof, check the chugging, arpeggio-driven late-night sleaze of 'Yoshua' by Danton's Voice, the Balearic deep house tactility of Debbie McKayle's 'Necessito Del Amor', the Arabic EBM throb of Bandana's 'Ganzo', the glassy-eyed dream house of Ambiosonix's 'Waves', and the body-popping Middle Eastern freestyle excitement of 'Radio Arabesque (Saudi-Club Version)' by Ethno League. A genuine must-check release.

Review: Re-issue of the clicky-clacky 2006 discoclash cut 'Make The World Go Away', a strange trio of club bits that slap as much as they emote. This one comes in the form of a new remastered version by Alden Tyrell and DJ Overdose; as difficult as it is to make out the vocals, we glean a bittersweet suicidality from the track, as an alienated robot voice sings of just that. A slapping darkwave synthesis peaks its way through on the two newer tracks; 'Aint The Same As Before' is chugging and clippy, while 'Keep Fooling Yourself' is the triumphant instrumental that rounds it all off.

Boy Child (Felix Dickinson mix)

  3. Boy Child (Felix Dickinson Discomix)
Review: The Emotional Rescue reissue series of Noel Williams aka King Sporty working with other artists and singers on the Konduko label's roster comes to completion with the deep funk disco of The Prolifics' Boy Child.

Formed in 1970 as part of "Senator" Nolan Jones' New Orleans soul and funk label Hep' Me Records, the bands early deep southern soul saw them release a series of 7"s for Hep' Me and Avco, plus an Xmas single for EMI and the minor hit A Place Called Home, recorded at the infamous Musle Shoals studios, backed by the Rhythm Section band who, from the early 60s, turned out hit after hit, from When A Man Loves A Women to Brown Sugar.

Landing on the newly inked Drive label, set up in '72 by Henry Stone as a sub label of his burgeoning T.K Records empire, their developing move in to funk saw them featured alongside Funky Nassau, Jimmy Castor and Peter Brown. It is here the connection with Noel Williams was formed. While putting together the "Konduko Six Pack" showcase album, the band were invited to the Miami Sound Studios for sessions that brought us both title cut Boy Child and the accompanying You Got Me.

All brass and claps, Boy Child is as funky as Williams got, backing the groups soul vocals, a story of first born's energetic path in life and a mothers love. The backing from Deep Rockers band bring the swing, the trippy keys and wide bottom end has made this a secret drop for many. You Got Me on the other hand is true King Sporty, a driving 9-minute disco boogie cut, where the warm harmonies lay down this uplifting, killer dance floor stop.

To close, the flip is again given over for reinterpretation, welcoming back Felix Dickinson to expertly cut, loop and dub. A special personal song for Dickinson, his subtle extension teases the intro for DJ play, before letting things fly - "the little show-off" as the song notes. With a near 30-year DJ and production career in place, his Discomix is a fitting way to complete this cycle of reissues of this benchmark label, for now.

Thankfully the Illegal Jazz label treats us to a second edition that is packed with just as much joyous disco, jazz and funk heat. All four of these joints from the 70ies are masterfully reworked by Delfonic & Kapote. The first cut is a bouncy one with big chords, the second has an irresistible samba shuffle, '
Maison Rejam' gets down and dirty and 'Garrett Rejam' layers up the silky house drums with warming Rhodes.

To give you an idea of his vibe within the broader remit of deep house, he's also part of Glenn Underground's Strictly Jaz Unit, so you know his musical chops are meeting a world-class standard. On this new release, he lets his uplifting playing take centre stage on 'Feelin It', tapping into a jazz funk vibe which has plenty of relevance outside the house scene. You could imagine this going down a storm at a soul weekender, but if it's the beats at the back of the mix you vibe on, then fear not because the flip goes in on the drums alone, giving DJs something to work with.

Review: Emotional Rescue completes another set of Discomix collaborations, this time with the Idjut Boys' Dan Tyler, with the dub-disco-reggae of JA meets Brixton's Floyd Lloyd Seivright.

Born in Brown Town, 1948, his music life was formed while attending the cradle of Jamaica music, the legendary Alpha Boys School that spawned the likes of Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Johnny Osbourne, Cedric Brooks and Rico Rodriguez. Leaving for London in 1969 to pursue music he soon established himself, recording with Vista Sounds and Trojan, where he also worked on A&R, before setting up his Tropic label, as well as signing to KPM Music that has seen his compositions appear in film / TV from Eastenders to Friends and recently, Stranger Things.

By the 80s he was working with Red Cloud (ERC102/123), mixing a fusion with soul and disco. Check Out Your Mind comes from these sessions, appearing on his sophomore album. Jazz keys and horns, funk bass and infectious guitar back Seivright's call to awaken, a rising consciousness of the times.
The righteous groove is exemplified on the super rare instrumental. Appearing on the Sexy Lady 12, it now commands serious attention. Featured together for the first time, the interplay shinning a light on Rudy Steel's guitar, before the B side is commanded again by Dan Tyler. His longform utilises the best of both versions, cutting and dubbing to abandon while maintaining total control of desk for a fitting finale.

Everything You're About To Hear Is True appears to be a disco edit label with plenty of Balearic chops, which leads in with a supremely slinky rub down of Lynsey De Paul's 1981 disco funk masterpiece 'Strange Changes'. Things pitch down without holding back on blue-eyed funk for 'Jesus Train', originally by Swedish songwriter Per-Erik Hallin. On the flip there's no less than three hits, from the boogie funk perfection of 'Get It' to the jazz funk ascendance of 'Surge' and the swooning disco of 'Wilson'. Rock solid songs given a respectful touch up for the discerning DJ.

They're at it again on this must-check seven-inch. It is a second volume of their West & East series and kick off with the jittery analogue grooves and post-disco wonkiness of 'Focal Savor' which is a writhing mass of detuned synths and chattery percussion. 4. Lift Off (remix)
Review: Having previously produced two tidy remixes of overlooked Patrick Cowley gem 'Get a Little', Alan Dixon has returned to the late, great producer's catalogue in order to rework another lesser-celebrated cut. This time round, he's turned his hand to Megatron Man album track, 'Lift Off', a typically throbbing, muscular vocal number that sits somewhere between thrusting robo-disco, sparkling electrofunk and synth-pop. Dixon first adds a little low-end grunt on the re-edit style 'Love Attack Mix', before delivering a sturdier and easier-to-mix 'DJ Friendly version'. On the flip you'll find Cowley's original and a rare, club-ready remix from the early '80s.

I'm Another Man
Cat: GCV 7001. Rel: 20 May 22
  1. I'm Another Man (7" edit)
  2. Night Cruiser (7" edit)
Review: Although they've been serving up high-grade blends of disco, funk, soul and house for some time, it's only in recent years that many of Micky More and Andy Tee's most potent productions have made it to wax. The two tracks here, which first appeared digitally in the middle of the last decade, are fine examples. 'I'm Another Man' is heavy, raw and impactful, with the pair adding rolling house beats to a horn-heavy deep funk song complete with gravelly male lead vocals. Over on the flip, 'Night Cruiser' is their (successful) attempt to make (and update) a Vincent Montana style, Salsoul disco instrumental with added house chops. Keep an ear out for the Roy Ayers style vibraphone solo that drops midway through.

  3. All Trouvee - "Darling"
  4. Angel - "Tomorrow Night"
  5. Eggs Time - "Feeling Action"
Review: Leng Records' 59th release is something a little different: a very personal collection of largely obscure and hard-to-find gems, mostly created by European pop producers in the late '70s and early '80s, from artist and record collector Paul Beckett. Firmly Balearic and sun-soaked in tone, there's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout. For proof, first check Ray & John's 'Day By Day (Instrumental), which sounds like Please-era Pet Shop Boys reclining at a pool party in Rimini, before admiring the space rock/synth-pop fusion of 'Angelo' by Angel'o. Over on the flip, Beckett offers up three more slices of glassy-eyed goodness, with the loved-up deep synth pop of Angel and the fretless bass-sporting wooziness of Eggs Time standing out.

Review: The electrifying Rheinzand and is back with another superb full length that will get fans more than excited. Based in Ghent, Belgium it is a joint venture between multi-instrumentalist and producer Reinhard Vanbergen, Charlotte Caluwaerts of Tundra fame and Mo Disko who you will know from electronic pair The Glimmers. For the title track, Stephane Misseghers (from dEUS) joins them on drums and Bruno Coussee plays bass and it makes for a standout single "about drugs and good times, but also about hangovers, loneliness, and a twist of identity crisis." It is backed up by plenty of other innovative tunes.
