Review: It's been a while since Fila Brazillia's 1995 album Maim That Tune has been available on vinyl. The announcement of this remastered 30th anniversary edition is therefore very positive news. Their first 'proper' studio album (its predecessor, the genuinely brilliant Old Codes, New Chaos, was effectively an expanded collection of earlier singles interspersed with blissful ambient interludes), 'Maim That Tune' is a 90s downtempo classic that not only features some of the Hull duo's most beloved tracks - the sublime, tempo-changing deepness of 'A Zed & Two L's', early progressive house number 'Slacker' and the head-nodding bliss of 'Harmonicas Are Shite' - but also a swathe of equally impactful but lesser-spotted gems (the buzzing '6Ft Wasp', jazzy hip-hop head-nodder 'Extract of Pienal Gland' and the string-laden stoner funk of 'At Home In Space').

Haunted Dancehall
Review: Some 21 years after it first landed in stores, Sabres of Paradise's triumphant sophomore album, Haunted Dancehall, finally returns to wax - this time in crisply remastered form. The trio of Jagz Kooner, Gary Burns and the much-missed Andrew Weatherall were arguably at the peak of their powers during the period it was recorded. Lstening back all these years on you can tell. Effects-laden and frequently off kilter, the set does a terrific job in fusing the trio's love for all things dub-wise with leftfield electronics, picturesque melodies, funky samples and the murky industrial gunk of '80s post-punk culture. Highlights are plentiful, from the skanking excitement of 'Wilmot' and the Blaxploitation heaviness of 'Theme', to the tactile bliss of 'Bubble & Slide II', the Cabaret Voltaire-esque weirdness of 'Flight Path Estate' and the wide-eyed ambient pleasure of 'Chapel Market 9am'.

Review: Now an annual fixture, Hostal La Torre's in-house compilations do a good job in gathering up Balearic-minded sonic treats from a variety of styles and sub-genres. This year's edition - the fifth in total - is particularly special, delivering a mix of dewy-eyed ambient bliss (u-Ziq's '4am'), breakbeat-driven downtempo dancefloor warmth (Burns & Tubbs' 'Where Were You In '92'), Brazilian acoustic sweetness (Arthur Verocai's 'Cabaclo'), deeply dubbed-out electronica ('Present Voice' by Software), new age house-not-house synth-scapes (Point Zero's 'Coastal'), Afro-soul (Nina Simone's under-appreciated 'Come Ye'), vintage deep house (NY Housin' Authority's exceptional 'Apt 3B'), string-laden shufflers (Mark Barrott's 'When Devils Become Gods'), dreamy Americana (Mazzy Star), piano-heavy dreaminess (Aqua Bassino) and Balearic classics (Talk Talk).

Review: Raise a snifter to a veteran gem sifter! British Balaearic tastemaker and sonic holidaymaker Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy returns with Balearic Breakfast Volume 4, the latest in her compilation series for Heavenly Recordings. Issued as a limited double 12" and paired with Volume 3 on an extended 19-track CD edition, this fourth instalment continues Murphy's mission to transmute mornings to interstellar beachside joyrides: her Loft-era DJ digging roots shine again once more, as Cosmo pulls on sun-rosed robo disco, jazz, slow-mo electronica and widescreen synthscapery, all eschewing era and origin. Ilya Santana's 'Cosmovision' presages nicely Cosmo's own rework of Saint Etienne's 'Alone Together' and a floor-stretching disco cut of Gloria Ann Taylor's Love Is A Hurtin' Thing rounds out the set sweetly.

Review: Last year, Claremont 56 founder Paul 'Mudd' Murphy finally got round to releasing his second solo album, In The Garden of Mindfulness - a sequel some 18 years in the making. Clearly he felt inspired by that experience, because album number three is due later this year. If this teaser 12" of alternative instrumental mixes of future album tracks is anything to go by, it promises to be another musically detailed and vividly realised release. Written and produced with regular collaborator Michele Chiavarini, both cuts are effortlessly classy. Check first A-side 'Mahalo', a gorgeous chunk of Love Unlimited Orcehstra-goes-jazz-funk brilliance rich in flanged guitars, simmering strings, spacey synths and lolloping grooves, before admiring the dub disco-goes-Balearic shuffle of 'Mata Na', where Chiavarini's brilliant musicianship comes to the fore.

Review: Just a year after the last compilation stood out as one of the best of 2024, Pete Herbert is back with a another brilliant collection of poolside sounds that again explore leftfield Balearica. These are delightfully horizontal grooves that transport you to sunny climes and starry skies in an instant. His own reworks feature, including a version of Sidirum's blissful and astral trip 'Ex Plane', a more tropical and propulsive dub of Lulla's 'Love Comes Quickly' and a quietly epic ambient daydream rework of Bill Mango's 'Inflight Sample.' These are grown-up sounds for cathartic moments lost in your own thoughts.

Review: For the uninitiated, Rotation Sound System is a collective of veteran crate diggers, DJs, producers and party promoters spearheaded by Mind Fair's Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton, and Wreckin' Havoc trio Rob J, Stuart Robinson and Rich Hall. For years they've thrown an annual garden party (using their custom soundsystem of the same name) and now Leng has offered them a chance to curate their own comp. As you'd expect, the 12-track collection is piled high with largely unknown gems, from the tactile, syntth-heavy Balearic breeze of Moondata's 'Let The Sunshine In (Dub)' and Roger Renning's chugging dub disco aligned 'Cecelia', to the oddball boogie-pop of 'Music' by Amy Cooper, the Italo-disco inspired throb of Michael Heart's 'Some Girls (Instrumental)' and the loved-up synth-pop-goes-proto-house of Jean Louis Murat's 'To Garder Pres De Moi (Dream Remix)'.

Review: Soothing kosmische tones by British electronica band The Beloved, with a reissued indie-facing compilation of early singles. First released in 1993, this record came to consciousness at the same time as it hit the UK albums chart; and we're not surprised it did, for its angelic mixing, creaseless sound, and sophisticated easy listening progressions. Out of the 90s vogue for desirous house, trip-hop and downtempo a-la Everything But The Girl and Lamb came The Beloved with the smash 'Sweet Harmony', but the sweet, vivid breaths and basses of the sinuous 'Lose Yourself In Me' and paradisiacal lounge phonics of 'You've Got Me Thinking' also stand out.

Review: Max Essa is a firm part of the neo-Balearic mafia and shows off his trademark take on the summer-ready sound with this return to Is It Balearic? 'Camel Night-Rate (Clear To The Ocean)' kicks off with a great blend of chug, dubby low ends and shimmering synth work while 80s chords light it up with good vibes. A Be.Lanuit remix is more serene and stripped back for late night dreaming then 'Love's New Meridian' sinks into a melancholic and downbeat world of sunset charm with wispy pads. The Coyote Mellow remix reworks it as a gently breaking wave on a moon-lit beach. Classy tackle all round.

Review: Longtime label friends Peter and Lukas Visti return with a stunning long player rich in authentic Balearic sounds. It opens with the percussive nu-disco groove of 'Ocean View' then drifts into flamenco-tinged reflections on 'Invisible Sun' and 'Kathmandu.' Acoustic guitars feature prominently throughout, from the uplifting 'A New World' to the dreamy, sunset-ready title track. 'Eternal Love' brings us back to the dance floor while 'Lazy' leans into late-night Balearic house. The album closes with the serene, acoustic beauty of 'The Last Supper.' Fair Wind indeed.

Review: Three tracks from the more upbeat side of Coyote's sound surface on IIB side project Mega Beat Ibiza Sound. Title track 'Escape Pattern' glides on serenely, a mixture of 80s synth sheen and 90s ambient bliss, all underpinned with a shuffling, off kilter beat with plenty of open hi-hat action. 'Karma Comedian' on the flip heads on a jauntier, open-grooved path with a gorgeously rounded and thoroughly addictive bassline, while the closing tune 'Raddish Eyes' (feat Max Essa) sets phasers to stun for an epic teaser of an intro, before a nimble beat finally takes us to the run out groove. Quality gear from the Nottingham duo, as ever.

Review: Adam Wise, you may know, is Fabulous Lover and this new record marks his first for Pete Herbert's Music for Swimming Pools. It's a mature mix of 80s-inspired Balearic electro-funk with a tropical twist straight from his Bali studio. This sun-soaked collection bridges sunset vibes and dancefloor energy with 'It's Lonely At The Top' a funky opener with a squelchy bassline and playful riffs. 'Elevate' douses you in 80s synth sounds that glow warm, and label head remixes into a more buoyant Balearic house beat. Elsewhere is the gentle swagger of 'Low Bounce' and lush synth disco buzz of 'Automatic.' Feel-good grooves, for sure.

Denihilism
Review: Jamie McCue is the man behind the Canadian label Silent Season and his newest concern, Moon Garden is fast becoming just as vital. This fantastic fourth outing comes from Transient Vessels, who McCue describes as "a local artist and good friend of mine." Opener 'Another Day' is a slow-motion motion dubbed-out melon twister that echoes the early Leftfield sound and is detailed with both textured synth leads and more introspective chords. 'Denihilism' is just as slow motion but deeply absorbing with plenty of wide open space for the pads to linger and the drums to churn and hypnotise.

Review: Alongside the standard black LP edition, Dido's No Angel returns also in a limited, fresh-pressed red marble vinyl run, celebrating the quiet, sanguine force of a debut that crept up on the charts and never really left. First released in 1999 with little fanfare, Dido's debut was slow-burn success; a gentle hybrid of folk-pop, downtempo beats and soft-focus heartbreak. With syncs on everything from Roswell to 'Stan', and an influence still felt in the work of present day phenoms like Caroline Polachek, this 25th anniversary reissue lands in September with restored artwork and unseen photographs from the recording phase. Still sparse, still supple, No Angel is no less disarming in 2025; and Dido no holier than the grizzled subjects she sings of.

Review: While he's released music on all manner of inspired labels - most notably Nous Kl'aer Audio, Klasse Wrecks and Rhythm Section International - Ecuador-based Frenchman Nicola Cruz saves most of his most interesting material for the Multi Culti label he first joined in 2015. There's naturally plenty of trippy, psychedelic and hard-to-pigeonhole fare to be found on Cruz's first EP for the imprint in four years. Pur picks of an extremely strong bunch include the locked-in, spaced-out, Latin psyche-pop-sampling 'Aima', the acid-fired, reverb-laden chug of 'Naeku', and the exotic, percussion-rich early morning dancefloor darkness of 'Third Eye Dub', which boasts some particularly heady Middle Eastern instrumentation.

Review: On its 25th anniversary, Dido's No Angel hears a reissue after years of quiet retouching, though it has always been a touching record. It introduced the dove-winged Dido as a subtle anomaly compared to the post-Britpop landscape she splashed onto; more introspective than the era's radio pop, but too melodic and emotionally direct for the trip-hop bracket she was often loosely filed under. The album was shaped over several years, with early versions circulating before Arista officially picked it up, much of it having been co-produced with her brother Rollo Armstrong (of Faithless). That connection lends the record the gently electronic undercurrent Dido is now remembered for: looped beats, ambient washes, soft synth beds, acoustic guitar, and a diaristic, plainspoken subject range in the lyrics. Its house vibes - domestic mundanity, bruised endurance - could hardly predict its lead song's aggravated use in Eminem's 'Stan'.

Flip it over and you'll find 'Mangal Remangaled', the remix from Ma Ze regulars UV & Nenor, adding more hypnotic chug to its atmosphere and some 'live voodoo drums' without compromising an inch of the original's spooky charm/menace. Bad juju, but of the very best kind.

Review: Marking their first release in five years, this eighth EP from the Greek duo sees them back on the Balearic and downtempo tip. With prior releases on several cornerstone labels in this niche, they continue to refine their hybrid style, drawing on Balearic house, Italo disco, ambient textures and laid-back lounge influences to deliver laid back styles. The A-side opens with 'Glam Pulse', a piano-driven track that leans heavily into Italo disco aesthetics, underpinned by relaxed lounge grooves and evocative beachside ambiance. 'Haleakala' follows in a more chill out vein while blending organic percussion, melodic ambient motifs and Latin-inflected acoustic guitar to arrive at a sound reminiscent of early Cafe del Mar compilations. The inclusion of live instrumental elements lends a dynamic, band-like quality to the arrangement. Side-B continues the established mood with 'Horizon Avenue', a track built around a smooth lounge groove that borders on soundtrack territory. 'Sunion' concludes the set with an emphasis on soulful guitar work and understated funk, its soft keyboards and light rhythm section completes the warm finish. Overall, the EP is a well-executed return to form.

Review: There is a delightful lightness of touch to these deep dubwise explorations on the newly emerging False Aralia label, set up by Brian Foote, who founded US leftfield institution Peak Oil. Drums lap like gentle waves, synths unfurl as softly as passing clouds and smudged, ghostly vocals from Loveshadow's Anya Prisk bring romance. 'Externalism 02' is brilliantly wistful - barely there pads hint at emotional pain but dissipate before you hurt too much. 'Externalism 03' is a more lo-fi and minimal work with shuffling drums and murky low ends coalescing into a tender and bubbling soundscape then 'Externalism 04' is a sonic collage that is always shifting its focus from flickering candles to blurry pads. Hugely experimental but warmly comforting sounds.

Review: Peek of Normal is the new label from disco veteran Stevie Kotey, whose productions have graced the Bear Funk, Ambassador's Reception, Strut, Electric Minds and many more labels in the past and its inaugural release comes from Dutch master Mark du Mosch. Sterling Melody is quite the labour of love and the eight tracks, spread across a double vinyl pack collection, lean towards the coldwave, electro and synthpop end of the dancefloor spectrum. There are echoes of some pretty classic sounds here, from the Vince Clarke-esque throb of '77777st' and 'A5G Neowise' - not unlike the soundtrack work of mid period Tangerine Dream - to the slower motioning Italo-tinged shininess of 'Soluzio'. Our favourite is the title track itself, perky and full of sparkle, like the incidental music for a lost series about a mullet-clad, white linen suited detective who doesn't play by the rules - only much, much better than they ever were back in the 80s. Definitely worth a Peek.

Single Gun Theory - "Fall" (Voyage To The Bottom Of The dub remix)
Review: This compilation is a crate-digger's dream: A lovingly curated collection that channels the blissed-out spirit of early 90s dance music through a modern Balearic and downtempo lens. Coming from Australia, it's a fresh look at evoking memories of after-hours chill-out rooms and smoky beachside sets. Sisters Underground kick things off with 'In The Neighbourhood (Sisters On The Boulevarde dub)', an ambient house gem peppered with hip-house stylings and a laid-back rap that really takes you back. Boxcar's 'Lelore (World dub mix)' follows with a cool, rolling bassline and bleepy nods to early techno. A downtempo track that still sounds futuristic in its restrained confidence. Side-B opens with Sexing The Cherry's 'This Is A Dream', a great blend of ambient house, Balearic and soft techno elements that perfectly captures the retro-futurist mood. Rounding things out is Single Gun Theory's 'Fall (Voyage To The Bottom Of The dub remix)', a swirling, psychedelic piece soaked in dreamy trance and faint acid lines. More than just nostalgia, this comp reimagines a classic era with warmth and inventiveness.

The mood stays low-lit throughout, but the range is wide - from the off-kilter shuffle of Sweely's 'AirFrance' and Hostom's dubbed-out 'Beyond The Apex' to Greg Paulus' twilight reverie 'Sometimes It's About Us'. Contributions come from artists scattered across Europe and the Americas, including Parisian keyboardist Paul Cut, Buenos Aires-born Barem, Berlin's Markus Sommer and LA mainstay Adam Collins.

Review: An RSD reno of Washington duo Thievery Corporation's fourth studio album, this new 2xLP edition of The Cosmic Game is a thumping throwback to its initial release in February 2005, when post-trip-hop and electronic sounds rubbed against a well chosen landscape of indie collaborators, from The Flaming Lips to David Byrne and Perry Farrell. Primary Wave here reissues the album as a red double LP, commemorating its 20th anniversary. The original record moves seamlessly between downtempo grooves and global influences, from the anthemic 'Marching The Hate Machines (Into The Sun)' with The Flaming Lips to David Byrne's appearance on 'The Heart's A Lonely Hunter.' World beats merge with political undertones, as we lurch between lacerating and lush atmospheres.

Review: With a first in their new series, Bar:Low couldn't have set the bar higher. Describing their own work as "blended incantations for dancefloor situations", there's otherwise little sayable about the background of these sure-to-be underground Balearic hits, save for their innate, trailblazing edits elan. Focused squarely on Balearic disco, the A-side sports a reedit of French disco drummer and composer Cerrone's 1997 resurrector 'Supernature', while the B goes chuggy with a Nine Inch Nails reinterpretive original, and the B-side rounds out on a slow, star-seeing daze, 'Balearic Bruce'.

Review: It's a heartfelt goodbye from Saint Etienne, as the deadbolt downtempo band draw a curtain on a brilliant and nostalgic career with International, confirmed to be their 13th and final album. Not a bitter split - just a sombrely mutual decision to end things on a creative high after 35 years of music, detours and friendship. Co-produced with Tim Powell (ex-Xenomania), International is a sharp pivot from 2023's ambient The Night, channelling the group's pop instincts into mournful mixed-emotes: "don't it make you sad?", goes Glad . Confidence Man lend sparkle to the throwback bounce of 'Brand New Me' on the remix side, while Erol Alkan, Vince Clarke, Paul Hartnoll and Nick Heyward also crop up across the record. It ends with 'The Last Time', a slow fade that speaks directly to their own long goodbye.

Review: Saint Etienne's final studio album, International, closes a remarkable chapter for the initially London trio.
The record follows last year's ambient intention The Night; after 35 years of friendship and making music, International now takes on a collaborative and classic songs-based route, inviting Confidence Man, Vince Clarke, Nick Heyward, Paul Hartnoll and Erol Alkan into the fold. What yields is a recorded rout of collective expression, the album equivalent of a going-away-forever party. Tracks such as 'Brand New Me' and 'Sweet Melodies' recall the band's classic house-pop flair, while the closing song 'Last Time' offers a heartfelt farewell after a multi-decadal career.

Review: Given that Emotional Response boss Stuart Leath has enjoyed a long working relationship with dub-loving psychedelic pop types Peaking Lights, it's little surprise to see band member Aaron Coyes bring his new solo project, Exotic Gardens, to the label. Predictably, this debut EP/mini-album is a joy from start to finish, with Coyes delivering a quintet of cuts that giddily mix and match elements of dub, post-punk pop, effects-laden guitar trickery, shoegaze adjacent soundscapes and spaced-out headiness. Highlights come thick and fast, with our current favourites including the shuffling joy of 'Tonight', the acid-flecked electronic psychedelia of 'Organise Your Movement' and the yearning, sun-soaked colour of 'Last of the Light'.

Review: The legacy of Riccione label Tribal Italia is lent a fully attentive ear, tracing its more breaks-driven, sample-heavy undercurrents. First laying roots in Afro-cosmic music, Tribal Italia later absorbed a broader cultural flux: hip-hop's dense sample tapestry, as well as diasporic electro-hybrids emerging from the UK via early 90s acts like Transglobal Underground and Loop Guru. What resulted was a corridor where percussion met crate-digger collage, forming a sound both local and borderless. This new selection digs into that lineage, filtering the imprint's archives through a rhythmic, breakbeat-focused lens.

Review: When it ermerged in 1994, Love Me signified a bold and sophisticated evolution of Japan's Noriko Sekiguchi's sound, marking a departure from the Lolita-esque pop structures she had previously flirted with. Rooted in trip-hop, acid house and ambient music, it's a shimmering, groove-driven statement of self-determinationian album that subverts expectations and expands upon the genre-blending experimentation she had hinted at in earlier works. From the outset, the electro-dub pulses of 'Passage Brady' set the stage for a more assertive, mature exploration of electronic textures. Tracks like 'Communication Breakdown' embrace a loose, baggy energy, while 'Love Is'ifeaturing Killing Time's Neko Saitoidives into a deeply expressive, heart-wrenching performance that embodies the album's emotional core. The transformation of Michel Polnareff's 'Love Me, Please Love Me' into a piece of angelic house music epitomises Sekiguchi's ability to reshape familiar sounds into something uniquely her own. With Love Me, Poison Girl Friend fully steps into her identity as both producer and performer. Heavy beats and intricate atmospherics drive songs like 'Slave to the Computer' and 'If You Wish', while the haunting 'Tout Est Rouge' reminds listeners of her ability to command darker moods when necessary. Shifting seamlessly between Japanese, English and French, she refuses to be confined to a single style or narrative. This is an artist in complete control, crafting a genre-fluid, deeply personal work that stands as one of the most compelling releases of its time.

Review: Given that Ocean Moon is a solo alias of Balearic and ambient great Jon Tye, you’d expect this Pinchy & Friends label debut to be rather special. It is, of course, with Tye offering a gentle – and frequently more rhythmic – take on the deep and immersive sound of his recent LP on Music From Memory, Ways To The Deep Meadow – and more than a few nods to his ambient techno works (alongside Peter Smith) as MLO. This latter aspect is particularly evident on ‘Shimmering States’, where intergalactic electronics and enveloping ambient textures rise above a spacey breakbeat and nods to vintage 90s IDM. Elsewhere, ‘Hidden Treasures’ is a hissing and crackling cap-doff to the deep ambient of Pete Namlook, while ‘Reflecting Light’ cannily combines new age ambience and slow-motion electronic beats.

Review: Portuguese sound shamans Imaginaria Records close their elemental trilogy with Home, a final chapter following The Trip and The Place, completing a conceptual arc centring on themes of cyclical nature and personal, eternal return. Where earlier instalments roamed and (dis)located, this release opts to reflect, slowing to a semisolid state shaped by rhythm, silence and seasonal shift; downbeat reggae, bhangra, dancehall and Balearic collide, as on Zeb's 'Sleepless In Palestine' and Hepyek Selekta's 'Ankara Skank', both of which lend the record a motivic Levantine feel pertinent to now. The liner quote from R. Murray Schafer further anchors the mood, refocusing in on life's natural oscillations: sound and not-sound, presence and fade.

Review: This final release from the revolutionary Bristol post-punk artist, completed shortly before his death in April 2023, captures the restless political force and sonic experimentation that defined his work across The Pop Group, New Age Steppers and his solo output as Mark Stewart & The Maffia. From the suprisingly synth-heavy opener 'Memory of You' onwards, it doesn't retreat into nostalgia. Instead, it pushes further into genre collapse, as noise, fractured electronics and lyrical urgency, blending protest and poetry with the intensity of someone who never once stopped questioning. The production is dense and expressive, all jagged textures and dub-soaked bass, with Stewart's voice somewhere between invocation and broadcast - sometimes spoken, sometimes sung, but always central. Despite the heavy themes, there's clarity and even tenderness here, making it one of his most personal records in years. Released on Mute, a label Stewart was long associated with, this final work feels entirely in step with his uncompromising ethos: politically direct, creatively confrontational and grounded in a lifetime of radical sound. A fierce, final reminder of an artist who always stood outside, looking in.

Review: If there is anyone who knows about chill out music, it's Alex Paterson, who helms Orbscure Records as well as being the man behind The Orb. San Francisco's DF Tram has long been known for his intricate sound collages and deep storytelling and this new album pushes even further into ambient and experimental territory, merging hazy textures with personal reflections and lush production. Its first single, 'The Librarian', is a window into the album's distinct mood, blending folk-tinged guitar with a soft psychedelic haze, conjuring a 70s-style daydream with a mellow groove. 'Separate Ways' introduces chillwave and light pop elements, expanding the sonic palette while maintaining a laid-back atmosphere, while 'Flashbulb Memory' stands out with its delicate guitar strums layered over environmental field recordings and synth washes. The album also sees DF Tram stepping into the foreground with his own vocals and lullaby-like melodies. Written across studios in Zagreb and Vienna during the pandemic, Bittersweet Afternoon is a cinematic journey and a fitting continuation of DF Tram's ever-evolving exploration of sound and memory.
