Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Review: Over the years, Ron Trent has released some fine albums, all of which have subtly expanded on his trademark soul-flecked, percussion-rich deep house sound. On What Do The Stars Say To You, his first new full-length excursion in 11 years, the Chicago native has taken a different approach, utilising his occasional WARM alias on a stunning set that abandons dancefloor-pleasing in favour of immersive, evocative and ultra-deep blends of ambient, downtempo, jazz-funk and electronica. It's a genuinely brilliant album all told, with a string of impressive guest musicians - including Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros of Azymuth, electric jazz pioneer Jean-Luc Ponty, psychedelic Balearic specialists Khrungbin and Italian ambient maestro Gigi Masin - all making brilliant contributions. In a word: exceptional!

Review: Previous offerings on No Fuss have featured the likes of Saison, Crispin J. Glover and Dean Zepherin, and now the upfront house label brings together another selection of party heaters from a range of producers. Saison makes a welcome return with the feisty "Till The Day I Die", a richly produced vocal jam with plenty of uptempo shuffle in the drums. Risk Assessment lean on the keys to create a melodic mood on "I Don't Understand" and then Saison does it again with the bright and breezy "The Riff". That leaves it to Natasha Kitty Katt to finish things up with the heavy funking disco licks of "Plenty Good" - a get-down cut for all seasons.

Jungle Dream (Ron Trent Remixes)
  1. Jungle Dream (Ron Trent remix part I)
  2. Jungle Dream (Ron Trent remix part II)
Review: Irst released way back in 2011 on one of Nick Anthony Simoncino's fine EPs for Metamatics, 'Jungle Dream' smartly joined the dots between turn-of-the '90s Italian dream house and the more jacking end of late '80s Chicagoan house. It was always ripe for remixing, such was the mixture of attractive musical elements on show, and we can't think of anyone more suited to the task than deep house legend Ron Trent. On the A-side 'Part I' remix, Trent tiptoes the fine line between attractive dreaminess and percussively weighty late-night house voodoo - all layered drums, groovy bass, whispered vocal snippets, languid lead lines and immersive pads. He goes for a more expansive, sunrise-ready sound - complete with fluid, Balearic house keyboard solos, sultry synth strings and sun-kissed chords - on the flipside 'Part II' mix.

Review: Detroit mainstay Andres returns to MotorCity Wine Recordings with an anthemic 4 tracker entitled Sunday Kinda Love. For those that know, MotorCity Wine is the spot for Sunday parties, so we only thought it appropriate to have one of Detroit's most seminal producers highlight the vibe with this EP. On the A side is Andres's dusty house sound that we've all come to love, complete with bouncing basslines, slick vocal chops, and drums to turn out any dance floor. On the flip side Andres slows the tempo just a touch to highlight his chunky midtempo beatdown sounds, with "Rubin Samba" bringing a Latin flair and "Sunday Kinda Love" driving it all home. Essential Detroit music manufactured in Detroit and housed in a gorgeous vinyl package, TIP!

  1. Fourteen
  2. Fourteen (Ricardo Villalobos remix)
Review: Last year DisDat dipped into Andrew Weatherall's archive of unreleased music and unleashed 'Y.W Eleven', a deliciously chuggy, druggy, synth-heavy affair that sounded like the late producer's take on 'Enjoy The Silence'-era Depeche Mode after a fistful of hallucinogenic mushrooms. 'Y.W Fourteen', a kind of sequel mined from the same source, is a little breezier and quietly Balearic in tone, with attractively fluttering synth lines bubbling away atop a crunchy, mid-tempo electro beat and intergalactic electronics. The accompanying remix comes from the effervescent Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully re-imagines the track as a rubbery, bass-heavy chunk of locked-in dancefloor minimalism in his distinctively wonky-but-funky, otherworldly style.

Review: Weirdo minimal tech soul, anyone? Any takers should be directed towards this oddball release from Melchior Productions and Paul Walter. Two tracks of serious strangeness: timestretched vocals and repetitious yeahs blossom between the beat-thickets of Melchior's 'Yeah X 3', while many more percussive hits and cuts and clicks and pops and booms come courtesy of Walter's B-side, 'Xvive'. It's an impressive first foray for Maria Newyen's new imprint Scious; let's hope future 12"s stay just as weird.

Review: Well here's something no one expected from the annals of house music history. Back in 2000 a chance link up took place when Steve Bug invited the legendary Chicago producer Spencer Kincy, aka Gemini, to his studio in Berlin. Two tracks were laid down, and now after all these years they're finally seeing the light of day as Chiwax got the blessing from all relevant parties to press them up for our grooving pleasure. They're crisp, unfussy tracks which are perhaps less wild than a lot of Gemini-related projects, which no doubts speaks to Bug's well-known style, but there's a whole lot of vibe in these cuts whichever way you look at them.

Review: Seven years on from the release of his decidedly loved-up vocal deep house classic, 'Thirstin', Mood Hut co-founder Jack Jutson is finally ready to return to action - albeit with an album that might surprise those who've not paid attention to the inrtricacies of his blazed, glassy-eyed trademark sound. Opening The Door is less concerned with deep house dancefloors than much of the Canadian's previous work; instead, it applies his famously warm, jazz-funk and stoner boogie inspired instrumentation to AOR, yacht rock, Chris Rea (opener 'If You Don't Know Why' is like a cool, 21st century take on 'On The Beach'), West Coast jazz-rock, ambient jazz and mid-80s European Balearic dub. It makes perfect sonic sense and could well turn out to be one of the albums of summer 2022.

Review: Following six years of increasingly impressive EPs for such labels as Distant Hawaii, Bokhari and Lobster Theremin, Sweely has finally got round to producing a debut album. Slightly more eclectic than his 12" singles but still dominated by spacey chords, intergalactic electronics and tactile grooves that sit somewhere between tech-house and tech-house, Closer Energy is a quietly impressive collection that puts mood and melody front and centre. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the electro/analogue deep house fusion of 'Keep On Rock'n', the late '90s UK tech-house lusciousness of 'Techy Sunrise', theacid-flecked micro-house squelch of 'MiniLook', and the two hazy ambient cuts that top and tail the LP.

Review: Shockingly, it's been four years since long-serving Greek producer Argy last released an EP of new material. Perhaps he's been holding back some sizzling material because this return to action on Afterlife is genuinely excellent. Title track 'Tataki' is particularly potent: an intoxicatingly moody, otherworldly dancefloor chugger in which sampled, effects-laden Greek vocal samples rise above a throbbing sequenced bassline, tough but sparse drums, clandestine chords and creepy electronics. 'Magic Order' is similarly druggy, with choral vocal snippets, a bassline reminiscent of Lindstrom's trancey nu-disco classic 'I Feel Space', high-end lead lines and gently swelling chords. Impressive stuff all told, though we didn't expect anything less.

That's certainly the conclusion we've reached having listened to Birds on the Dancefloor, a fine four-tracker for Mule Musiq full of evocative, melodious, atmospheric and morning-fresh deep house jams. Our pick of a very strong bunch is the ultra-deep, drifting, dubbed-out dancefloor drift of 'Everglade', though opener 'Highland Spores (House Mix)' - a heady and hypnotic fusion of micro-house and deep house - pushes it close. Review: We've banged on about how much we enjoy Felipe Gordon's work before, noting that nearly everything he touches turns to musical gold. Predictably, his first outing on Clone's Royal Oak offshoot is superb, too. Opener 'Impresiones Acidas' is particularly impressive: a near-perfect fusion of hazy deep house, Tourist-era St Germain jazz-house and undulating, near psychedelic acid lines. It comes accompanied by a TB-303-free take, 'Impressiones' (where the original's luscious jazz guitar solos get more of an airing) and two bonus cuts: the sunshine-ready, jazzual deep house wonder of slowly shifting loop jam 'Can't You See' and the chunkier, piano-sporting deep house heaviness of 'Displacing Resolution'. In a word: impeccable!

As a solo artist he first struck out in the mid-late 90s on the likes of Peacefrog, Acacia and Guidance, which tells you plenty about the quality of deep house he's responsible for. Studies In Form originally hails from that period, out in 1997 on Woody McBride's Sensuist label. These tracks sound evergreen, steeped in the warm musicality of the era, with plenty of oomph to get a floor moving but ultimately loungey in their demeanour. This is grade A classic US deep house from a seasoned pro, now lovingly reissued for your pleasure.

For this one they arrive on YORE with artful yet floor-ready grooves that are steeped in classicist traditions but are executed with modern style. 'How We Groove' has a busted bassline powering along slinky drums and a chopped up vocal under swirling chords. 'From Day To Night' smooths things out with wispy cosmic synths darting about over chunky beats and 'Believe' then gets a little more prickly and jazz tinged in its synth work.

Review: When it first appeared on Dutch label Djax-Up Beats way back in 1994, Glenn Underground's third single, 'The Unborn', was warmly received. Listening back to the record via this Groovin' Italy reissue, it's easy to see why. Like his other releases of the period, it strikes a perfect balance between energy-packed, techno-influenced intensity and the melodious deep house sound he'd later become famous for. Check first the frankly filthy title track, a jacking, TB-303 and TR-909-driven slab of mind-altering peak-time insanity, before admiring the luscious deep house/Motor City techno fusion of 'Tek-Na-Logie'. '101 Dolomations' is a smooth but jacking Detroit techno mutation marked out by rising and falling electronic motifs, while closing cut 'New Age Experience' sounds like a Chicagoan's take on the Burrell Brothers' early '90s Nu Groove productions.

Review: Petre Inspirescu comes through to NYC's DisDat with a sly 3-tracker detailing only the slinkiest minimal dub, the techy dance equivalent of Slinky Malinky. Operating only at night, viallike metal clanks and ominous bass booms scour the ambient wastes of 'Foc', the track's name mirroring the utterance we find jumping from our mouths on first listen. 'Si' is comparatively peaceful, while 'Para' is a dubbed-out modular afterthought; all three tracks nail an intense backend of sound, not easily achieved under normal circumstances.

Cat: TR 53. Rel: 10 Jun 22
  1. At Les (Christian Smith's Tronic Treatment remix)
  2. At Les (Christian Smith's Hypnotica remix)
Review: 'At Les' is one of Carl Craig's most beloved productions: a gorgeously dreamy chunk of Innerzone Orchestra style tech-jazz that first surfaced - on a now in-demand compilation - 25 years ago. Craig has revisited it several times since, but it's Christian Smith's 2010 reworks - reissued on this 12" for the first time since - that are arguably the most peak-time ready and dancefloor-centric. On the A-side 'Tronic Treatment' version Smith layers the track's iconic synthesizer motif - heart-achingly poignant and drenched in delay - and deep, spacey chords over deep, rumbling sub-bass and a crunchy deep house beat. Smith ups the tempo and intensity on the arguably even better 'Hypnotica Mix', which is closer in tone to pure Motor City techno and features a genuinely spellbinding breakdown.

A chunky collection of 7 prime cuts featuring new unknowns and more established names, some of them under mysterious alter egos which will never be revealed. It's all about the music for Dungeon Meat and this fresh selection of tracks and tools hits that nail on the head. Tried and tested as always this dynamite double pack will be one of those releases that never leaves the bag and is constantly reached for by discerning DJ's and ninjas who come to play and slay. Just like it says on the label, these jams are weapons of ass destruction. Handle with care.

Review: Robin Ordell debuts the first solo artist EP on his own label No Time County, an imprint that finds itself newly in the square centre of Berlin's psychic deep house sound. Following their first V/A compilation, released in 2020, defining the label's mission statement as pushing a "feeling of elegance to the dancefloor", Ordell here once again oils up the battering rams that are deep house and ambient trance, lending smoothness and melody to their harder edges.

Hidden Spheres is Tom Harris, a Mancunian DJ and producer who debuted on the label in 2015 and this return shows he has evolved his sounds and his skills plenty in that time. 'Improvisation' is a gorgeous number with fuzzy pads and lo0fi beats, 'Euan 92' takes us to the Med for some breezy deep goodness and 'You Are Not Your Body' then brings a playful vibe with step-in basslines and colourful trumpet sounds. There is still time for the funky 'Love Your Body' and a remix from Ruf Dug.

Review: Released last year, 'I Go' saw Peggy Gou in Italo-disco-influenced synth-pop mode, with psychedelic acid lines, sweet South Korean vocals and attractive melodies rising above a Bobby Orlando-esque bassline. Here the track is given a new lease of life by a trio of high-profile producers. Belgian behemoths Soulwax do a terrific job re-inventing the track as a retro-futurist, warehouse-ready house epic - all muscular sequenced bass, bustling drums, rave-igniting stabs and hands-in-the-air intent. DJ Koze does a lovely job of re-framing 'I Go' as a bubbly, bright and breezy nu-disco number, while Maurice Fulton delivers one of those killer re-rubs based around his funky, cut-up bass guitar lines, Nile Rodgers guitar licks and sparse-but-snappy percussion.

This first offering bring forth Kayenne's sweet melody over atmospheric rhythms & pads over driving drums brought together on Anthony Nicholson's rewerk. Next an unexpected late night groover from Plastik Recordings, Marc Cotterell where his deep chords transport you deep into the dancefloor. This last mix comes from Groove Victim aka Jay Brown (whom we unfortunately lost late 2021) simple but elegantly effective very reminiscent of the early 90' MAW dubs! Once again NDATL blazes forward!

Review: Mr A.L.I is an alias for Vick Lavender, a Chicago-based DJ and producer who runs the Sophisticado label. To give you an idea of his vibe within the broader remit of deep house, he's also part of Glenn Underground's Strictly Jaz Unit, so you know his musical chops are meeting a world-class standard. On this new release, he lets his uplifting playing take centre stage on 'Feelin It', tapping into a jazz funk vibe which has plenty of relevance outside the house scene. You could imagine this going down a storm at a soul weekender, but if it's the beats at the back of the mix you vibe on, then fear not because the flip goes in on the drums alone, giving DJs something to work with.

Review: Hot on the heels of his well-received EPs on Linear and Midi Records, Ionut Arapu returns to Rawax with two more top-quality tech-house cuts in his distinctive trademark style. On A-side 'First New Dance', the experienced Romanian producer peppers a rolling, bass-heavy groove with cut-up and layered vocal textures, deliciously wonky electronic lead lines, star-fall sounds and the kind of melodic elements more often associated with 1990s IDM. He opts for a deeper, more melancholic tone on 'Undoing', where emotive chords, dubbed-out electronic motifs and intergalactic synth sounds cluster around a sturdy, peak-time ready groove.

Review: Woody McBride and Dave Stevens worked together as Modal back in the mid nineties. Hardcore diggers have been banging their beats for a while but they're not that easy to find so thankfully the Sounds label reissues this collection go thumpers from 1997. It is a hefty double back of raw but soulful beats with rough edges, sharp hits and brilliantly unpolished drums. 'Quadruple Take' is a real sweatathon, 'Carnivalesque' brings the fun with rolling boogie-woogie pianos and further highlights included the silky and spaced out tech of 'Beautiful Music'.

" I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain. One always finds one's burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night-filled mountain, in itself, forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Review: Jacopo Latini is an Italian producer just breaking through with some choice releases on Mood Waves and Conceptual Moods. He's back on the former label with a lush new 12" of progressive house that leads in with the epic strains of 'Rumore Bianco' - the kind of track to get a crowd swooning thanks to its emotive, plaintive tone. 'Illusion' leans in a little more on the bassline, but there's no shortage of melodic flourishes on top and the subtle fleck of trance we're used to hearing in house music these days. 'Rumore Rosso' is a punchier affair, while 'Synthesy (Acid Dub)' sports a more explicitly 90s flavoured demeanour

Beyond his well documented struggles in life, his music beguiles and surprises in the way truly innovative house should, and that comes through in abundance on this reissue of a mystery joint from somewhere around the 1996 mark. There's a techier slant to tracks like 'Ginko B', especially compared to some of Kincy's best known work as Gemini, but it's still fizzing with an angular flair that could only come from one as funky as him. Just drop into the bubbling, melodious joy of 'Moodz' and let his inimitable sound take you away.

Originally released on Klang Elektronik and now reissued by Jelinek's own Faitiche label, Textstar is a masterpiece of glitchy sample-based electronics with a subtle, implied funk. In some ways the sound has dated - it's very much of the late 90s-early 00s era it was first crafted in. But it's a sound that still engrosses and intrigues, reveling in microscopic detail and subdued moods while retaining a groove that comes through the best on eternally magnificent cut 'Beautone'.

He's at it again on this fourth "45" in the series. A-side, 'Juicy Tells Him' is particularly potent, with the Aussie rework king cannily combining a much-loved rap acapella with punchy electronic beats, sturdy electronic bass and the kind of Korg M-1 organ riff more often associated with bassline or '90s U.S garage jams. He opts for an even heavier, sleazier, and dirtier sound on 'Tasty Work', a next-level re-imaging of a Missy Elliot classic that's as on-point and club-ready as they come.

Cable Toy (Low Budget Family) presents the label favourite with his bouncing, yearning remix of album stand out, Time Traveller. Countered with a perfect touch of summer vibrations and melancholia this up and coming St Petersburg resident has to be watched.

Finally, Linja (Avidiya / Malka Tuti) offers a deep, shuffling version of Untitled Ritual. Arpeggios throb, percussion snaps, tempos shift, planets realign, vocals by Noteless call...wait believing, just we have seen it, God is waiting, nothing can bleeding.

Only friends. Only family. This is Kito's emotional response.

Review: Frank & Tony return with their new Dream Vibration EP, five years after their last collaboration, the critically acclaimed 'Odes' EP. Lead track 'Dream Vibration' begins with a sluggish breakbeat and drifting, barely-there chord washes before gradually revealing a heavy, low kick and deep sub to propel the track forward. Eliana Glass, meanwhile, sings on Frank & Tony's original version of Stretch Out Like The World.

Review: While they have worked together before - those with good memories may remember their joint remix of LAPS for DFA - Edge of Infinity marks the first major collaboration between two of electronic music's most exciting producers, Roza Terenzi (AKA Katie Campbell) and D. Tiffany (Sophie Sweetland). As individual producers, they're renowned for the hallucinatory, often sonically detailed and undeniably loved-up nature of their trademark sounds, so it's little surprise to find that their joint album ticks all their boxes. After beginning with a chunk of dreamy, melancholic post-ambient electronica, they effortlessly drift between trippy, bouncy techno ('Gravity Bongo', the more driving and breakbeat-tinged 'Liquorice Skritch'), sub-heavy tribal hedonism ('Lil' Drummer Boi'), polyrhythmic techno ('Grains of Sand', the wide-eyed 'Paparazzi'), intergalactic late '90s style D&B ('Redemption Arc') and trance-inducing downtempo psychedelia ('Possession').

Review: Here comes a curio from the heady early 90s rush of house music. Music Institute Records was a low-key affair which ran from 1993 to 1999, with no particularly recognisable names amongst their repertoire, but the label started with a hand-stamped joint from Ciao Lee Tong, a project credited to Marco Funari. Plenty rare and now incredibly desirable amongst collectors, this four track EP has the plucky DIY spirit of an early 90s house release - raw and unpolished, but with all the right moves to get a party rocking. 'Session' is the gem which opens the EP in a cascade of psychedelic synth tones and tough Lately bass, while 'Dance Fusion' has a cheekier, Detroit-leaning swerve to it. 'Deep In My Heart' features some tricksy programming and a boxjammed Latin flavour, while 'Underground Station' takes it good and deep to round out this highly prized slice from a hidden pocket of house music history.
