Review: Another fine deep spiritual Jazz reissue on Japanese label P-Vine that came out on Strata East originally in 1974. Soaring vocals are charismatic of this album and it features the track Optimystical which Andres previously sampled.

Love Theme From Spartacus
Love Theme From Spartacus (7") (1 per customer)
Ace
Cat: NW 6. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus"
  2. Cannonball Adderley - "Brother John"
Review: This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Review: This is one of the greatest albums of Spiritual Jazz in 80's by Prince Billy Mahdi Wright who is a jazz saxophonist in the underground scene of Chicago. This is his only record as band leader and regendally Eldee Young who is well known as member of Young Holt Unlimited were credited as bassist of this album. P-VINE released it as CD this summer and now present it as reissue LP for the first time!

Chi Chi Mentira (reissue) (7" + postcards 再出版)
Cat: DSC 001. Rel: 30 Nov 20
  1. Via Libre - "Chi Chi "Mentira"" (3:42)
  2. Grupo Amigos - "La Gir Del Diablo" (3:25)
Review: The debut release from the freshly-minted Discodelic label offers up two exceedingly rare - and rather fine - "funky Latin" cover versions from the glory years of hallucinatory funk and soul. Side A sports Via Libre's flash-fried samba-funk cover of Marcos Valle's "Chi Chi Mentira", a heady re-imagination rich in Hammond organ stabs, undulating Latin percussion, groovy bass and a percussive middle section just tailor-made for DJs who like doubling up breaks. Over on the fiip you'll find something even heavier: Grupo Amigos' celebratory, organ-heavy funk-rock take on Trio Ternura's "La Gir Del Diablo", a song that was later famously turned into an international hit by Astrud Gilberto as "Black Magic (A Gira)".

Review: On its initial release a decade ago in 2007, Arthur Verocai's Encore - the Brazilian artist's belated follow-up to his obscure, eponymous 1972 debut album - was hailed as something of a modern classic. 10 years on, the set has lost none of its breezy sparkle, as this re-mastered vinyl reissue proves. It features a mixture of samba, jazz-funk and bossanova songs, with featured players including many of those who played on 1972's Arthur Verocai (Azymuth being the best-known to European and American audiences). The production, courtesy of Harmonic 313 member Dave Brinkworth, is superb, too; so sympathetic is it to Verocai's original 1970s style, in fact, that it could have been recorded at the same time as his now acclaimed debut. If you missed out first time round, this should be essential listening.

Daylight
Daylight (7")
Cat: VNG 003. Rel: 22 Feb 21
  1. Daylight (main version)
  2. Daylight (88 BPM mono version)
Review: Taken from a series of three 45s from the Vong45 catalogue where West Loop Chicago remake some of their favourite soul, jazz and funk records. For this release the WLC collective recreate the classic 'Daylight' as originally performed by RAMP in 1977, a Roy Ayers side project who also co-wrote and produced the track. Preserving the jazzy essence of the original by use of warm analogue synths and 'in the pocket' live playing, West Loop stay close to the 1977 version but with a more pronounced head-nod sensibility; a perfect ode to the Tribe Called Quest 'Bonita Applebum' sample. The B-side includes the '88 BPM Mono Version' while the A-side contains the groove heavy 'Main Version'. Ideal 45 material for this rare groove classic revamp.

Look out for future soul, jazz and funk tracks on " Digging It", The perfect 45 territory for the Soul, Disco, Funk and Hip Hop DJs!
