Review: Italian composer Gadi Sassoon debuts on A Strangely Isolated Place with an experimental exploration of impossible physics; an intricate soundtrack based on newly created sounds and abstract atmospheres. In 2015 Gadi was invited to Edinburgh by The NESS Project to check out their groundbreaking sound synthesis work. With the help of a supercomputer, the NESS group had created new digital systems capable of creating sounds so complex, rich and realistic they were indistinguishable from acoustic instruments. Better yet, the code could be hacked to create completely imaginary sonic worlds with bizarre physical properties. Gadi fell in love with this idea and became resident composer at NESS for the following years, collaborating with the researchers to create impossible instruments: mile-long trumpets blown by dragon fire in Black Hole Fanfare, needle fingers brushing eternally vibrating strings in Pi (p), giant resonating lattices of bound masses and springs in the Moto Perpetuo suite and Collision Suite, marbles sliding on thousand-string fretboards in Young's Modulus, morphing bouncing objects in Chaos & Order, an orchestra of giant bowed basses in Life On A Tidally Locked Planet. Multiverse was designed and created by bending the laws of physics in subtle ways, effectively creating acoustic simulations from parallel universes. Gadi combined the NESS sessions with analogue synths and live instruments in his Milan studio, with the intent of creating a space for the listener to get lost in - blurring the lines between organic and synthetic, loud and quiet, the abstract and the familiar.

Review: A warm welcome back to cheeky downtempo twosome Bent, who hear offer up their first studio set for 14 years. Up in the Air is full of neat reminders that what made them so popular first time round, namely a seductive, slinky, atmospheric, sample-heavy sound that tended towards the tongue-in-cheek and was more likely to draw influence from dodgy, radio-friendly 1980s soft-rock singles and vintage easy listening than obscure Balearic beats or austere electronica. There are of course a few differences - it's far more polished than their early works, and even more musically detailed - but for the most part this is vintage Bent. Given how miserable the world is right now, it's rather nice to listen to an album that prioritises cheeriness, quirkiness and musical colour above all else.

Review: Following 2012's acclaimed Red Nails album, machine manipulator, DJ, collector and music auteur, Cherrystones has been consistently working - composing, producing, editing, educating, programming, soundtracking and performing.

Biding time, considering and now ready to present the latest instalment of his journey. After completing the Critical Mass compilation - with part 2 due late 2020 - he left London for Scotland for two years to isolate. An experiment to truly find himself, with no social circle or need to engage, the objective to alchemise and create.

Building an intensive, all analogue studio running to 1/4" & 2" tape, the majority of these recordings are the emotions and moods drawn from this detoxification. The widescream Rave Digger, horror-haus Lavid Grinch show a more expansive Cherrystones. The occult beats of Uhuru Glue lead to the anthem Amaziac, with it's organic AFX rising, before again down to future beats of Silver Soarde and closer, Sethodone Recess Plant.

A musical blacksmith, a magician, conjurer... "a part of me i knew existed but have never fully spoken to or back to, i saw the sun rise and the clouds swarm, i saw dark settle and as the process speaks for itself they were aged in Bronze, dawn of man-man of dawn."

Review: Mixing Engineer, DJ and producer Yossi Amoyal is the man behind Sushitech Records. The label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi has compiled Fluere across four discs (plus an extended Part V - Fatum). The compilation shares some of his story through the records that inspired him and continue to do so. The tracks mark more than two decades of buying records. Starting in a time when new music had to be actively sought out and ending with the abundance of new releases available online today. Fluere marks the end of a chapter and is a very personal collection featuring forgotten tracks remastered for today next to exclusive and unreleased music. As the name Fluere would suggest, the tracks it contains are the glue that hold a set together. They are special, hypnotic, mood setters from artists who specialise in subtlety, from Two Lone Swordsmen and Baby Ford to Steve O Sullivan and Mathew Jonson. Each part of the compilation tells its own story, both through the music on offer and with an exclusive insert written by Yossi himself. The tracks themselves represent over three decades of moving dance floors. Starting with Mark Broom's Gira first released in 1995 and right up to Brawther's Serpent, produced in 2020, Fluere creates its own unique journey through this period of dance music history.

Review: This rather tidy, limited-edition "45" offers up two previously unheard instrumental edits of stone cold classics from the bulging back catalogue of Chanson hero and sleazy but chic singer Serge Gainsbourg. Side A boasts a superb revision of "Melody Nelson", a sweeping, string-drenched affair underpinned by sweaty drumming that arguably benefits from the removal of Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin's vocals. Over on side B you'll find an equally evocative version of Beck favourite "Cargo Culte". Stripped of the original lead vocals, the track sounds like a lo-fi art-rock instrumental smothered in ghostly choral vocals and creepy, foreboding musical flourishes. Top stuff!

""Phew"" is Japanese female vocalist who is well known as a member of legendary punk band ""Aunt Sally"". She has been active in a wide range of projects and collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Seiichi Yamamoto, DAF, and Neubauten etc.
This was originally released in 1981 as her solo debut album, made in legendary Conny's Studio with Conny Plank, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit from CAN. Not only highly demanded by vinyl collectors worldwide, but also this album is outstanding in the dimension of the music. By Plank's engineering, their never fading sound-making is still innovative and no one can stand next. Now we present it as reissued LP with OBI, you can listen to the monumental work of her career in vinyl after more than 30 years since the last time it was reissued for the first time."

Review: Since first emerging earlier in the decade, French threesome Domenique Dumont (Arturs Liepins, Anete Stuce, and an 'enigmatic', yet-to-be-named producer) has delivered two picture-perfect albums of atmospheric, occasionally Balearic, underground synth-pop for the Antinote label. People on Sunday, their first album for two years, started life as a synthesizer-based score for celebrated 1930 German silent movie Menschen am Sonntag, which they performed live at a festival in December 2019. Musically, it's arguably even more atmospheric than the trio's previous work, but is still rooted in their now trademark sound. What we get is a succession of melodious, huggable, sun-kissed and occasionally spacey instrumental tracks that sound like the missing link between Tangerine Dream, Air, 1980s Greek new age composers, Jean-Michel Jarre and little-known electro-jazz pioneers.

Review: I was initially intrigued by the artwork for Mark's New Routes out of Innerland. It felt so familiar. I had to have a listen. Upon hearing it I was shocked to find out how much I loved the music. It was a beautiful blend of the things I loved about ambient music and what my partner calls "Space Rock". I had never heard Innerland and I was already taking New Routes out of it I needed to buy Innerland. So I did some research - found out Mark was on Sonic Cathedral label and contacted Nat over there who ended up being super helpful and friendly. I was able to get Innerland and A journey through Ambient Innerland in vinyl. It is no wonder I was drawn to the music, a frequent collaborator with Ulrich Schnauss, Mark's work is at once blues, ambient and psychedelic.

Review:  A new label from Kinfolk records founder - and a 14 of a Soft Rock - Christopher Galloway is upon us.
This first release sees the beautiful sounds of Torn Sail/Huw Costin revamped by the mighty production force that is Mark Rayner and Matt Horobin, aka Shrinkwrap.
Shrinkwrap are a production team that have been in the wilderness for a number of years but are much lauded by The Idjut Boys - amongst others - which has seen them release on Discfunction and U-Star.
Being close friends with Huw Costin, they decided to get together and re-work the track Gain On Gains that featured on Torn Sail's 2017 long player, This Short Sweet Life.
These two re-works see Shrinkwrap take the original into an extended/after-hours bliss out of epic proportions and an ambient dub.
Added to the package is an unreleased on vinyl mix of Costin's Disconnected cut from 2015. This is a more folk-infused affair that once again ventures into epic territory thanks to the production skills of Rayner and Horobin.
A lovely EP to kick off this new label.

As one gets older, it's natural to think about the time you've spent on this planet and what you will leave behind. This was only punctuated by the unexpected loss of my aunt. At some point while crafting these pieces, I also pulled Pablo Neruda's book of poetry Residence on Earth off the shelf. The surreal imagery and emotions these works evoke felt connected to the music on many levels, and informed the course of the album until its completion. This album is dedicated to the memory of Mary V. Mannino."

Review: Platform 23 is delighted to present music from Colin Potter with It Was, a collection of tracks chosen from his 1989 cassettes Recent History Volumes 1 & 2.

After a burst of activity, mainly on his ICR label, from 1980 - 82, the tapes were the first released music in seven years and highlighted the intervening period.

While much of his earlier recordings have now been reissued by Dark Entries, Deep Distance and Sacred Summits, It Was covers the period where Potter recordings were limited while working as an engineer at his IC Studio, and pre-date his work with Nurse With Wound.

The ambience and guitar of The French Polisher leads to Diary Of A Nobody, an embodiment of Potter, sequencers and guitar against submerged, metallic percussion rising. Dense, claustrophobia follows in Solidarity At Wujeck Colliery towards the guitar refrains of Persistence.

Side two starts with Green Fields, where plucked guitars are surrounded and consumed by arpeggios. Propulsion without percussion, the layers of arps shift and redefine before the scatter of Saw with reversed synths and guitar acting as counterbalance. Nine Months, a possible centerpiece, has an autumnal atmosphere; crashing cymbals and ambulant guitar, leading to the closing Ships That Pass In The Night, a hazy drift of slowly sequenced synths & primitive voice samples.

Review: Traditionally the liner notes of an album take on a kind of third-party address, where a writer is delivering their thoughts about how an album makes them feel without breaching that space where they are representing themselves or the moment in time directly to the reader. The goal is typically a kind of timelessness, but as we live in unprecedented times, unconventional methods take on new life, and hopefully importance. In the spirit of that idea... man, is this the kind of album we all need right now. So many of us feel like we're constantly walking a tightrope, are feeling like we can't unwind, are in genuine need of a few moments of respite. Every so often an album emerges from an artist that most likely did not realize when they were composing how timely the results would be, and Lofi Dimensions is exactly that kind of record. It doesn't really matter why it's coming when it is, what's important is that it's here, offering peace to the perturbed and inspiration for the downcast. The American Dollar have long been one of those artists operating in a kind of middle ground, a band with a long history of creating moving instrumental rock that has somehow avoided ever becoming synonymous with modern American post-rock acts. They retain a sort of autonomy in a valued position just outside the boundaries of classification. Blending electronic textures with moving guitar and keyboard melodies, their music has always traveled somewhere in the spaces between trip-hop, electronic, post-rock and ambient, and this inability to be defined is ultimately what sets them apart from the trappings of genre, allowing them to be whatever they want The American Dollar to be in a given moment, always on their terms.

It's a multi-genre record that draws on wave, synth and electro to make a new balearic sound perfect for gazing off into the distance. 'U Hell' is a mid tempo open with lavish chords and a busted bassline, while 'The Waves' manages to make future electro sound like an ancient ritual. The Kejeblos remix is perfect for back room club sets and 'We Live As A Dream' is an in trueing moment of innocence and calm. It sees her "Workaround" a set rhythmic idea - 150 BPM percussive polyrhythms influenced by various global drumming styles - to create a suite of tracks rooted in bass-heavy UK style "broken techno" but vastly different in tone and style. Thanks to a range of impressive guest musicians (techno experimentalists Batu and Laurel Halo both contributed alongside veteran jazz players, one of Britain's best bhangra drummers and a cellist), there's a fantastic hybrid electronic/acoustic vibe throughout, with Dillon's experimental instincts combining with her grasp of mood and melody to create a suite of impossible-to-pigeonhole tracks that genuinely sound like nothing else around. Wall Calendar 2021: Dante Alighieri A Homage By Tangeine Dream & Bianca Froese-Acquaye
Notes: In 2021 the 700th Anniversary of Death of the unique Italian poet and philosopher DANTE ALIGHIERI is being marked. Tangerine Dream music lovers know that Dante's THE DIVINE COMEDY (Inferno/Purgatorio/Paradiso) was Edgar's most important compositional work. This electronic opera was performed several times in London and Germany in the years 2002-2006.

This calendar with its beautiful big-sized calendar sheets will accompany you through the Dante year. In future, March 25th will be declared 'Dante Day' in Italy in his honor. The calendar shows photos of TD's opera performance "Dante's Inferno" at Burg Nideggen in Germany, as well as wonderful painted artwork of Bianca Froese-Acquaye's Dante Series. Original quotes of Dante Alighieri himself complete the calendar perfectly.

In memory of Edgar Froese.

Review: Wormwood is the electro-acoustic duo of Christina Willatt and Andrew Wenaus, and they are based in London, Ontario.

"Much of the work for My Two Minds Become Air was written and recorded to accompany dance, and are in the form of vignettes. There is a special emphasis on movement, kinetics, orientation, and spatiality. Alongside movement through space, we wanted to conjure the massive expansiveness of the world outside ourselves at the same time as the seemingly infinite space of inward imagination. How might sound be a way of experiencing the ways that the imagination, the material, and the virtual each move through, intersect with, tangle and knot each other in delightful ways? In a way, we wanted to make music that acknowledges the ubiquitous supermodern abstraction of everyday life in the twenty first century."

The album My Two Minds Become Air comes in two distinct physical versions. The first is this Deluxe Limited Edition 12" lathe cut record version in an edition of just 66 copies. Each of these super high quality clear lathe cuts comes in a painstakingly modified, heavy weight recycled kraft-board jacket. On the front of each of these beauties is attached a hand made, two color inked Rorschach print on antique ledger paper sheets, and after mounting, each has been accented with hand distressed vintage Letraset rub on type. The band name is hand stamped, and the album title is typed out by hand on tiny strips of old, clear vellum paper...in two colors! On the back of each jacket is a corner mounted, double sided large sheet of hand written druggist prescriptions from a 125 year old Apothecary's ledger book...with additional parts of sheets mounted alongside it. The textual info on the back is also printed on equally ancient faded old papers. The first 50 copies of the lathe cut records, hand cut with care as usual by Michael Lawrence at Bladud Flies in Wales, UK, comes in its own vintage Deutsche Grammophon, polylined inner sleeve...the remaining copies in other vintage sleeves.

Entry Points Resonating Punk Performance & Art
Cat: 791301

book + CD
Notes: During the late 1960s and early 1970s, as members of the performance art group EXIT, Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher turned to creating outside of the gallery system and artistic conventions. Taking inspiration from eastern philosophy, particularly Buddhism and Taoism, they searched for ways to push beyond the boundaries of Western art practices and rationalities. This resonates with Redza Piyadasa and Suleiman Esa's 1974 manifesto and exhibition Towards a Mystical Reality, which likewise sought to find a way out of the limitations of modernist art practices and rationalities. Entry Points takes up Piyadasa's statement that art does not exist in time but only has entry points. What entry points might we find in the resonances between different attempts to utilize conceptual and performative gestures as a way to escape from the constraints one is faced with, aesthetically and politically?

Contains an essay by Stevphen Shukaitis, a dialogue between Shukaitis and Penny Rimbaud, and a recording of an improvised performance by Dharma and Awk Wah, "There is no authority but yourself... and there is no self", responding to footage of the Stop the City Protests.

Times & Sounds

Hardback book
Notes: 'GERMANY'S JOURNEY FROM JAZZ AND POP TO KRAUTROCK AND BEYOND' - This book is a journey - a ride through the depths of Germany's modern musical roots: at the beginning of the 1970s, experimental and progressive music in Germany developed far from the mainstream. Although few initially noticed it, it is now internationally celebrated as a cult phenomenon called "Krautrock". Today, bands like Kraftwerk, Can, Amon Düül II, NEU!, Cluster, and Tangerine Dream are considered pioneers of groundbreaking sound experiments. In order to understand the Krautrock era and its impact, it's worth delving deeper into the history of German rock music and taking a closer look at the overall picture. 'Times & Sounds' offers a comprehensive insight into the mechanisms of post-war Germany's music industry and sheds light upon its diverse musical styles, as well as their mutual influences and connections, which have received little attention until now: From the onset of German jazz and swing orchestras to the first rock'n'roll bands around Hamburg's Star Club and electronic synthesizer pioneers. From the intact world of schlager to agitprop and left-wing protest songs. From the avant-garde compositions of Stockhausen and his presumed disciples of Krautrock to the Neue Deutsche Welle. This book is a journalistic diary tracing Germany's dynamic culture from the late '40s to the early '90s. Those who take this journey experience the ups and downs of five decades, thus developing an understanding deeper than any other of the Krautrock phenomenon. Foreword by Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Kluster/Cluster/Harmonia).
