Review: 'Technopera' is the debut EP by Ampersounds (Fred Falke and Zen Freeman), featuring Rufus Wainwright. It's a bold claim for a debut electro-house EP to feature vocals by such a renowned artist. But Fred Falke nad Zen Freeman are no rookies either, having won the hearts of many a house and techno reveller in France, Europe and beyond since the 1990s. Ampersounds and the Wainwright collab was made manifest after an intellectual chat the trio shared over some highfalutin poetry; fittingly, Technopera has an air of intellectualism about it, with highlights like 'Solitude Of Heart' portraying a downtrodden mood blended with smart production and nods to '80s tropes.

Following Annie Lennox's "Artists for ceasefire. Peace" outcry at the Grammys in January, coming at the end of a heartwrenching rendition of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in memoriam of Sinead O'Connor, Fontaines DC is using their platform to raise funds for Medecins Sans Frontieres. 'Ceasefire' is a collaborative EP with trip-hop collective Massive Attack and progressive hip-hop group Young Fathers. Each group is donating their music into one compilation, where 100% of the profits are being donated to the non-profit humanitarian organisation. The 12" comes in one of 4 colour combinations, where the disc and two contrasting colours on the cover (designed by Massive Attack's 3D) sport one of the bold colours of the Palestinian flag.

Review: Before I Die have been putting out some high-grade leftfield delights from respected operators like Bernardino Femminelli, Tungusku and most recently Sewell & The Gong. Now it's the turn of Klangkollektor, indulging a collection of hazy dub excursions which sit somewhere near Balearic splendour, piano-charged melancholy and isolation tank meditation. In the dub tradition the approach is consistent and evenly paced, but it's certainly not aiming for any kind of typical Jamaican sound. Instead, there's a gentle introspection to the melodic content which gels perfectly with the spacious approach to mixing, unfurling across four sides of wax for an album you can just melt into.

Review: Marie Davidson's latest single 'Y.A.A.M.' is a poignant critique of power dynamics in the music industry - favouring authenticity and passion in a world that thrives on branding and transactional relationships - out of which the Canadian artist finds fuel to fan the driving flames of existential industrial electro-techno. The track opens with a juddering, in-between-4x4-and-2-step electro beat, which lasts for over a minute before Davidson takes up the mic: "do you follow me?". What ensues is an imperfect list of music industry quibbles, which flow over the monstrously huge backing - "entrepreneurs, influencers, producers, managers / nothing for you and me" - in stark but gallows-comedic contrast to the plea to relocate our arses to the dancefloor. In Davidson's own words, the track was inspired by a haughty, lecturing email from a music industry insider: "I took the opportunity to write down how I felt about the words," she recalls, "and the overall tone of arrogance of what I had just been sent quickly, I found myself having a bit too much fun."

Review: Kolony Gorky is back with a third EP in less than a year that once again offers some stylish and artful rhythmic interpretations. DDrhode & Sohrab are behind this one and it opens with the airy percussive pattern and suspensory loops of deep and deft jam 'Ghoroob' (Kryptic Rhythm) which becomes dusty downbeat and late-night jaunt when served up as the 'Haleeteh?' version. 'Azadi' has the feel of a sixties spy thriller with its mysterious leads and 'Distant Sun' shuts down with some zoned out and loved-up deep house romance. Another hard-to-define but easy-to-love EP from the already vital Kolony Gorky.

Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

Evincing a genre specificity that not even the average obsessive can muster, the eponymous track heard here has gone down in history as one of the quintessences of the hard beat microsound. 'Something Scary' nails it all; a deep fried, horrific acid line serves as the main engine for a mortal confrontation in sound, peppered throughout by FM cascades, sparse resampled djembe, and ghostly murmurations verging on EVP pickups. The EP is here lent a full on rejig, with a brand new instrumental reconstruction released here alongside two fresh smokeout versions from Anatolian Weapons.

Traversing the wastes of bolshy Italo and new beat, and lending both an apocalyptic flair, opener ’The End Of The Days’ seems to sonically describe as much through its use of massive gate-snares, janky ascendant riffs, and trancelike string-n-stab breakdowns. Allegedly: Yamaha RM1x as main sequencer, Kawai K1, EMU Xtreme Lead, Quasimidi Techno X and Ensoniq DP/4 as fx processor. Master direct recorded to a Tascam 424 Mk1 cassette tape recorder. 0 daw or software used. Impressive! The B is brought up rawly and raggedly by Spanish duo Cavalry Stone, who match the A’s eerie melodic aura with a similarly strange lo-fi electro cut, sounding originally bound for cassette.

Review: Lurka is back on his own label Damage which is a place for harder-edged sounds and here includes remixes from Ossia. The one original, 'Red', is a thrilling rhythmic workout with a skeletal kick drum pattern that is broken and loopy, and deft percussion layered in over the top next to wet synths and undulating bass. Ossia's first rework spins it out into a more distorted and manic cut fizzing with static electricity while the second is slightly more paired back but no less menacing. This one has been mastered at Scape in Berlin and is mad limited to just 100 copies so do not wait around.

Review: In an unprecedented collaboration, Formula 1 star Charles Leclerc and world-renowned pianist Sofiane Pamart present Dreamers, a unique piano composition project. An unusual project to say the least, we have to admit that the idea is there: co-composed between the boy racer and the pianoforte prodigy, Leclerc and Pamart jointly describe their release as a "tribute to the journey and not just the destination", and a composition that "captures the ongoing pursuit of excellence and the never-ending evolution of dreams".
