Needs 006 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NNFP 006. Rel: 28 May 19
  1. Eris Drew - "See You In Snow" (6:15)
  2. Edward - "Mind Loop" (6:16)
  3. D.Tiffany - "Sun Trip" (7:54)
  4. Henry Hyde - "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim" (6:18)
Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

  1. Fourteen
  2. Fourteen (Ricardo Villalobos remix)
Review: Last year DisDat dipped into Andrew Weatherall's archive of unreleased music and unleashed 'Y.W Eleven', a deliciously chuggy, druggy, synth-heavy affair that sounded like the late producer's take on 'Enjoy The Silence'-era Depeche Mode after a fistful of hallucinogenic mushrooms. 'Y.W Fourteen', a kind of sequel mined from the same source, is a little breezier and quietly Balearic in tone, with attractively fluttering synth lines bubbling away atop a crunchy, mid-tempo electro beat and intergalactic electronics. The accompanying remix comes from the effervescent Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully re-imagines the track as a rubbery, bass-heavy chunk of locked-in dancefloor minimalism in his distinctively wonky-but-funky, otherworldly style.

  1. Melchior Productions Ltd - "Yeah X 3"
  2. Paul Walter - "Xvive"
Review: Weirdo minimal tech soul, anyone? Any takers should be directed towards this oddball release from Melchior Productions and Paul Walter. Two tracks of serious strangeness: timestretched vocals and repetitious yeahs blossom between the beat-thickets of Melchior's 'Yeah X 3', while many more percussive hits and cuts and clicks and pops and booms come courtesy of Walter's B-side, 'Xvive'. It's an impressive first foray for Maria Newyen's new imprint Scious; let's hope future 12"s stay just as weird.

Review: Following six years of increasingly impressive EPs for such labels as Distant Hawaii, Bokhari and Lobster Theremin, Sweely has finally got round to producing a debut album. Slightly more eclectic than his 12" singles but still dominated by spacey chords, intergalactic electronics and tactile grooves that sit somewhere between tech-house and tech-house, Closer Energy is a quietly impressive collection that puts mood and melody front and centre. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the electro/analogue deep house fusion of 'Keep On Rock'n', the late '90s UK tech-house lusciousness of 'Techy Sunrise', theacid-flecked micro-house squelch of 'MiniLook', and the two hazy ambient cuts that top and tail the LP.

  2. Magic Order
Review: Shockingly, it's been four years since long-serving Greek producer Argy last released an EP of new material. Perhaps he's been holding back some sizzling material because this return to action on Afterlife is genuinely excellent. Title track 'Tataki' is particularly potent: an intoxicatingly moody, otherworldly dancefloor chugger in which sampled, effects-laden Greek vocal samples rise above a throbbing sequenced bassline, tough but sparse drums, clandestine chords and creepy electronics. 'Magic Order' is similarly druggy, with choral vocal snippets, a bassline reminiscent of Lindstrom's trancey nu-disco classic 'I Feel Space', high-end lead lines and gently swelling chords. Impressive stuff all told, though we didn't expect anything less.

Review: Petre Inspirescu comes through to NYC's DisDat with a sly 3-tracker detailing only the slinkiest minimal dub, the techy dance equivalent of Slinky Malinky. Operating only at night, viallike metal clanks and ominous bass booms scour the ambient wastes of 'Foc', the track's name mirroring the utterance we find jumping from our mouths on first listen. 'Si' is comparatively peaceful, while 'Para' is a dubbed-out modular afterthought; all three tracks nail an intense backend of sound, not easily achieved under normal circumstances.

Review: Robin Ordell debuts the first solo artist EP on his own label No Time County, an imprint that finds itself newly in the square centre of Berlin's psychic deep house sound. Following their first V/A compilation, released in 2020, defining the label's mission statement as pushing a "feeling of elegance to the dancefloor", Ordell here once again oils up the battering rams that are deep house and ambient trance, lending smoothness and melody to their harder edges.

Review: Hot on the heels of his well-received EPs on Linear and Midi Records, Ionut Arapu returns to Rawax with two more top-quality tech-house cuts in his distinctive trademark style. On A-side 'First New Dance', the experienced Romanian producer peppers a rolling, bass-heavy groove with cut-up and layered vocal textures, deliciously wonky electronic lead lines, star-fall sounds and the kind of melodic elements more often associated with 1990s IDM. He opts for a deeper, more melancholic tone on 'Undoing', where emotive chords, dubbed-out electronic motifs and intergalactic synth sounds cluster around a sturdy, peak-time ready groove.

Review: bDeadbeat and Sa Pa are pleased to present their first collaborative album on the anniversary of BLKRTZ's 50th release, and defer to Albert Camus to describe the "Whys" and "Whats" of it:

" I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain. One always finds one's burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night-filled mountain, in itself, forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Review: Before his work became reduced to a fine slither and he shifted into experimental, concept-driven realms, Jan Jelinek dropped some of the finest early doors micro house as Farben. Originally released on Klang Elektronik and now reissued by Jelinek's own Faitiche label, Textstar is a masterpiece of glitchy sample-based electronics with a subtle, implied funk. In some ways the sound has dated - it's very much of the late 90s-early 00s era it was first crafted in. But it's a sound that still engrosses and intrigues, reveling in microscopic detail and subdued moods while retaining a groove that comes through the best on eternally magnificent cut 'Beautone'.

Review: Split across three tracks, Nev's 'Deep Beep', originally released in 1991, posits 3 important existential questions. These questions come to us in sonic, not just track-titular form. The NY producer weaves techy, yet not overthought, acid funk with breaksy bloop and 8-bar breakstyle on 'How Deep Can You Creep?', while the question of 'How Deep Can You Sleep?' becomes irrelevant when we're woken violently by scything hats and dreamy keys. The question of 'How Deep Can You Bleep?' is the most fundamental quandary of them all; the jankier the bleep bloops, the better, as evidenced by this one's breakdown.

In the early 2000s, Oli, Jonathan and Pete carted a gigantic Dell computer between each other's houses to craft a modest but timeless back catalogue of deep and emotional tracks. Their music was featured on European labels Bitboutique and the excellent Iron Box Music at the time; of which "Entron" a particular shining example of their sound, only recently gained notoriety amongst a number of discerning DJs. For Those That Knoe is proud to present a sonic snapshot of those times the lads spent in the home counties with three previously released cuts from the aforementioned labels and one taken from their unreleased archives.

Review: Since returning to action in 2016 after a seven-year break, 1990s techno survivor Lee Renacre AKA 100 Hz has released some of the best music of his career. This fine four-tracker marks the long-serving Londoner's first outing on Romanian imprint Amphia, who are best known for serving up sparse, minimalistic tech-house. As you'd expect, there's a slightly fuller sound here, though sonically it's as pleasingly druggy and mind-mangling as much of the imprint's output. Renacre brilliantly flits between trippy, arpeggio-driven, house-tempo techno (the otherworldly 'Machines of May'), dubstep-influenced UK bass/techno fusion ('Gadget', which echoes the ethos of his early 100 Hz releases with James Chapman), intergalactic tech-house ('Dark as Night'), and frankly filthy low-end wobblers ('Swiss').

'Once Upon A Time In The West' is a brain cleaning minimal tune with warped tones and silky sine waves weaving their way into the deepest corners of your mind. The clean and abstract sounds continue on 'Again That Feeling' which has superb boucle in the kicks and nice bendy synths bringing and elastic sense of groove. '

This is the first 12" they've put out themselves, but many of the label's core crew were featured on Romanian label Storytellers back in 2020. If you like your minimal undulating and blissful (and who doesn't?), you'll love the sweeping swathes of pads permeating Silat Beksi's 'Seq-Roar', while Lulla's 'Working The Machine' folds a little trippy flair into the mix with trancey pings nestled in between the groove. UserUNKWN & Soyro team up for the supremely mellow roller '4th Planet', and label heads D I N and IOAN leave the peak time behind to focus on a seriously submerged after hours sound peppered with artful sound design.

  1. Mathew Jonson - "Diamond Eyes"
  2. Freedom Engine - "Rain In Kyoto"
Review: Matthew Jonson's 2019 album as The Freedom Engine, A Box Full of Magic, may have been pretentiously marketed (the press releases sent to dance music media were needlessly academic), but the set itself was one of the most entertaining things he's done, in part because it saw him repurpose old sounds and craft ear-pleasing epics from live studio jams. You can hear that on this 12", which boasts one of the highlights - the '90s IDM, meditative ambient and melancholic techno fusion bliss that is 'Rain in Kyoto' - on the flipside of this 12". More club-ready is 13-minute A-side 'Diamond Eyes', a cut released under Jonson's given name that wraps bubbly lead lines and bleeping electronics around a swinging house groove and jaunty bassline.

Vendas's 'Surplus' has a happy excess of weight to it, wbike Ali Demir's 'Vuslat' is less on the hard-hitting, but more nimble, side, as distant vocoders weave in and out of motherboard blips and analord drums.

Review: Hanna is a somehow rather overlooked or under-appreciated (or both) producer from the states. He had some cult classic outings on some key labels first time round then seemed to disappear only to come back again a few years ago with his superbly fresh and musical house sound more than in tact. He is a master instrumentalist and keys player who brings the jazz, the funk, the class to every tune. That is certainly the case on the warm, glowing grooves of 'Another Flannel Afternoon' with its neat synths and subtle vocals. 'Afraid Of Breakfast' is a more textured track with wet clasp and loopy synth motifs over a rugged house beat. 'In Yo Head' features 90s hip-hop maestro Jeru Tha Damaja on the vocals and gets a remix that is a perfect bit of hip-house.

Review: Well this one is fun. And fun, just about, in a good way, rather than stupid silly un-cool and uncouth fun. Kolter's Breakarama EP kicks off with the title track which makes use of the melodic motif from TV's much loved animation Futurama. It is sure to get some super reactions in the club with its playfulness and charm. 'Ghost In The Breaks' is more serious, with a slick and futuristic feeling breaks vibe then 'Get Out James!' is another laugh that makes use of the iconic riff from James Bond over some sleazy and dark UKG. 'Horny Breakdancers' is an airy, uplifting one to close.

Only the moodiest and dubbiest audionics prevail here: 'Dark Temptation' embodies all the sonic personality traits to charm our ears, healthily or not; techy machiavellianism, twinkling psychopathy, knocking narcissism. 'Next L' is a low-level trance grudger, while 'Dalaman' subtly places all sorts of spine-tingling foley sounds between the beats.

Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. 'First Blush' is a grandiose cut with huge synth leads and a sense of progression which will take you higher and higher, albeit shot through with a seductive melancholy that helps the track hit even deeper. Review:
For the best part of 10 years, For Those That Knoe has maintained its position as a platform for obscure and under-represented artists of recent past, (re)introducing their music to the world in the form of a stories told in chapters and specially crafted albums.

Taking a slightly different tack, For Those That Knoe is looking to the present rather than back in time with a first LP outing for Slovenian producer Vid Vai.

Vid Papez has had a succession of quality EPs under his belt, originally classically trained on violin, lute and guitar, his sound has developed into a lush mix of catchy breakbeat rhythms, precise intelligent percussion and other-worldly melodies and sound scapes.

In constructing Laminar Flow, Vid has taken inspiration from fluid dynamics and coupled it with early influences in the form of UK bleep, IDM and breakbeat sounds. The result is a timeless piece of liquid-smooth sonic art that is strongly relevant in 2022 whilst also giving a gentle nod to the pioneers of the deeper end of the rave scene.

For their second installment, the Chateau Chepere crew brings on board legendary producer Stephan Laubner under his STL moniker, with four time warping pieces of music. With his distinctive and intricate sonic palette, Laubner extracts from his hardware different musical colors and shapes to produce singular atmospheres. Opening up the EP is Fly Fly, an epic 11 min minimal house trip full of tension and excitement, followed by Eargrind, an eerie, laid back Detroit leaning ballad. On the flip is Light Up, a spaced out, playful and bittersweet number that will revitalize any hazy after-hours dancefloor. Closing up the EP is Unlike Dislike, a quirky, jacking and mischievous techno workout for the packed club. This diverse ep will pull the listeners and dancers into Laubner's multifaceted, low key but captivating universe.

Cutting the ribbon is ADMNTi, who has been on superlative form via releases for Dansu Discs, 4Plae and Yamanu amongst others. His 'Liquor Locker' and 'BetaSpace' cuts are splashed with a little sunshine, some garage bump and subtle trance touches, all the better to grease up the dancefloor. Laidlaw takes up position on the flip, offering his own strain of shuffling funky stuff for the peak time crowd. 'Open To Receive' has a subtly spiritual slant to it, while 'Repeated Patterns' gets into a snaking house trip with cheeky hooks and snappy basslines for days.

Review: After a break of two long years, tech-house scene stalwart Sascha Funke has finally delivered a new EP of typically atmospheric, on-point music. It's his first outing for Running Back after years spent flitting between BPitch Control, Multi-Culti and Endless Flight. Interestingly, what's on offer is more retro-futurist in tone than much of his work, with audible nods to vintage electronic disco, early 2000s nu-disco (think Morgan Geist) and tactile '90s deep house. Our picks of a very strong bunch are rubbery, morse code-sporting nu-disco-goes-bleep house number 'QAM', moody analogue deep house treat 'SEZ', whose creepy chords and spacey sonics are undeniably alluring, and ultra-melodious, Italo-disco-influenced opener 'FEZ'.

On this new drop for Constant Sound he's clearly having a lot of fun sculpting a hefty, big room sound with Ibiza in its sights. 'Trigger' hinges around an epic breakdown-build up which goes off like a rocket when it drops, swinging with glee and leaning in on playful synth licks. 'Go' is an absolute monster too, which nods to Burnski's recent UKG explorations with some rough bass and a killer 4x4 groove. Review: As the London-based NorthSouth Records enter their fifth year they also arrive at their tenth release. After a run of artist EPs NSR returns to the split format to deliver four tracks from two of the label's founding members; Sam Bangura and Harry McCanna. On the North side we hear Sam's first cuts pressed to vinyl for the imprint. Shining with his characteristic sound of bubbling melodies, refined grooves and tied together with a growling low end, 'Jaspe's Groove' and 'Marble Leg' are two driving tunes aimed straight for those facemelting late-night moments.

Heading down to the South side we catch Harry working again under his alias Henry Hyde. 'More Days Inside' starts things off on something of a mellow tip, whilst still being a functional track for the dance floor. 'Wading Through' on the other hand offers up shuffling percussion, spacey synth plucks and one of Harry's signature squirmy, swarming basslines. It's an EP that showcases some of the signature NorthSouth sounds and who better for it to come from than two of its own.

Adam Pits delivers a devious little gem aimed at dance-floor destruction that winds it's way between a heavy garage bassline and 90's four to floor house rhythms, fragmenting the vocal around an increasingly unhinged and infectious groove. It's fusion served at it's finest and a super fresh sound perfectly placed for the current club scene.

Armec accentuates and expands the immense power hidden in 'State Of Flow' by breakin' the beats up and adding heavily swung filtered loops snaking around a massive bass. The Armec remix comes complete with a twist to its tale with the additional of a magnificently wobbly arpeggiated synth twisting our melons into a right old state.

Review:
Rutilance Recordings move fast with their releases, but not so fast that they're able to bypass our critical floodgates. Thankfully for them, we like this new one. Label residents Oden, Fatzo and Thurman here deliver two garage house cuts sure to fire up the deep ends of dancefloors; assuming they're not swimming pools anymore! We're drowning in heat, as 'Marvel House' causes us to marvel in awe at the house chops on display. 'Call The Doctor', meanwhile, leans far further into the jackin' end of things, remaining bloopy, vocal sciencey, and a delicious. Spicy tech house from this lot.

  2. Vincentiulian - "Asid"
  3. Vincentiulian - "Equal"
Review: Macedonia's OGE are at the forefront of the headsier side of the country's minimal tech scene, and here they welcome two new tracks from friend and mainstay Vincentiulian, whose brand of shuffly tech (on close listen) melds many a dubby layer and subdued pulse between the beats. 'Asid' is a backroom party-starter, equal parts breathable and 303-driven, while 'Equal' roots for fairer dancefloors via echoic stab-shouts, strange vocal samples, and tactile low ends. In a move we've not seen a label do before, there's even a 'starter' track pushed by the label to set the tone.

Mistaken Identity (reissue)
  1. Mistaken Identity
  2. Pursuit Of Bliss
  3. Restless
Review: Rob Pearson and Kate Smith are The Invariants and 20 years ago this year they put out this still-fresh EP, which, remarkably, was also their debut. It is a perfect fusion of UK tech and Detroit techno that oozes machine warmth and silky synth work for those heady floors. The rickety tech-funk of 'Mistaken Identity' opens up with glitchy drums and reverberating toms, 'Pursuit Of Bliss' has a different kind of squelchy bass funk with futuristic pad work and 'Restless' is a heads down and late night driver. The pair are in the club working in new music so this reissue is a timely one to reintroduce us to their vital sound.
