Review: Efficient Space continue their esteemed compilations of varying focus and theme. Their latest, Someone Like Me, is less interested in nostalgia for a certain time, propinquity, or contemporaneity (all pitfalls into which most other compilation curators fall prey) and instead finds enjoyment in the juxtaposing of all manner of musicians and songs reflecting a certain style, from the Pacific Northwestern USA to the UK, and whose main approach to music-making was hobbyism. "Folk" is the operative word here, though whether it's one we should utter confidently isn't so certain, as the twists and turns this compilation takes - through the lonesome falsettos of Lynne Ann Kingan, the detuned, drum-machinic drones of Charlie Webster, and the intermittent, reverberative outbursts of Jim Kennedy - capture something far more than just a transmissible, oral ceremonial form.

Review: I Was A Mod Before You Was A Mod was originally released in 1995, at that point that made it their first album in three years. It was also Television Personalities' first collection of new music on new label Overground Records following the label putting out two live albums and nine reissued singles. Now it gets repressed and served up on wax once more but with the added bonus of eleven new tracks recorded by Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios. his marked the band's last original album with everything coming after taking the form of covers or compilations.

Following on from 2023's full-length LP Yay!, Small Boats takes a retraoactive approach, manifesting as a 23-track double CD "primer compilation, which offers a comprehensive looking back on said career. Review: Blue Cheer are the cult choice for those who adore their seminal hard rock from the end of the 60s. They might not have reached the fame of Hendrix, Zeppelin and the like, but they were just as influential and daring in their approach. After the wild impact of their debut album Vincebus Eruptus they followed up in quick fashion with Outsideinside, which legend has it was so loud in places it had to be partially recorded outside. Whatever the case, there is more than enough psych-tinted blues rock brilliance to sink your teeth into on this 1968 album, which gets repressed in blue and shows the band at their scuzzy, squalling best on anti-classics like 'Sun Cycle'.

Review: Revered as one of U.S. hardcore punk's most humorous, yet politically outraged projects, Last Scream Of The Missing Neighbours is a gem by Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) and the band D.O.A., in a collaborative effort that spans every blood-boiler from the gentrification of Colorado to the then nascent (putatively C.I.A.-fuelled) crack epidemic. Less concerned with a piercing sonic aesthetic than getting its lyrical point across, this mini-album was a conduit and awareness-raising exercise in the battle against capitalist doublespeak and is best known for its culminating in the closing fourteen-minute dramaturgy 'Full Metal Jackoff', decrying everything from racial scapegoating to the U.S. military-everything complex.

Available on crystal clear vinyl with a striking white and black splatter, the album looks as good as it sounds. Here you find the power of the band in their early stage that would help them becoming superstars in the world of rock music. Review: Perhaps the most abstract, clangorous and genre-defying entry in the formidable Royal Trux catalogue, 1990s Twin Infinitives is a sprawling, tactile odyssey punctuated by Neil Hagerty's acerbic guitar stabs and Jennifer Herrema's sleazy vocal free association. Through the thick squalling gauze witch Hagerty and Herrema superimpose on each track, ghosts of A/B song form emerge and disintegrate, with blues licks and disarmingly gentle croons offset by rumbling mechanical loops and sonic shrapnel. It really feels like the ground zero, the most amoebic and uncompromising launchpad for what would become the Royal Trux sound. Highlights include the Henry Flynt-esque 'Ice Cream', the cavernous flute peals of 'Osiris' and the rollicking, fuzz-damaged 'Glitterbust'. One of the best from one of the best!

Review: Dead Kennedys' best frontman Jello Biafra's onetime collaboration with the band D.O.A. produced this hardcore punk gem - 'Last Scream Of The Missing Neighbours' - which fused the best of both bands' sounds, while namechecking every popular and/or political scandal at the time, such as Willie Horton, the Iran-Contra Affair, Oliver North, and the US crack epidemic. Just six tracks on this indelible EP, now reissued via original label, Alternative Tentacle do well to satirize the powers that be in true punk fashion, culminating in the 14-minute military meat-grinder that is 'Full Metal Jackoff'.

Review: Here is a great example at the power of the reissue market. A series of live recordings were released on CD only starting in 1994 from the band's tape archivist Dick Latvala. When the vinyl boom kicked back into heavy gear with reissues in 2012, some of these Grateful Dead were brought to vinyl for the first time. Like many things with the band, their fans are devoted as much as any in music history. Then you have another variable that adds to the demand: A band known for their live performances that are individually different in many ways over the years. Thus, prices went out of control for these costing as much as a Ferrari monthly payment. Thankfully, these are starting to get a another pressing. Volume two is highly regarded because of the live jam version of Dark Star. An ideal track to show the amazing live ability of the band. This version comes in double vinyl form with a very nice gatefold.

Review: The Canterbury scene alumni Soft Machine and their live album Hovikodden 1971 in Norway marks a significant turning point in the band's history, as it captures their transition into a fully instrumental ensemble. This beautifully packaged four record box set showcases the band's exceptional musicality and experimentation, blending elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, jazz rock, and proto-rock to create a unique and captivating sound. Despite their limited commercial success, Soft Machine's influence on rock music cannot be understated. Their innovative approach to instrumentation and composition has inspired countless subsequent artists and continues to resonate with fans of experimental and progressive rock. Hovikodden 1971 serves as a great example to the band's enduring legacy and their pivotal role in shaping the evolution of rock music and Cuneiform did a great job in taking the archives from the original reels and respectfully remixing any parts that needed a slight polish.

Review: Tiffany Shade's ethereal psychedelic sounds transport listeners to a heavenly realm on their lavishly pressed lavender vinyl album. With jazzy, acoustic guitars and lush harmonies reminiscent of The Association, their originals and a captivating rendition of Love's 'Softly To Me' sparkle with crystalline beauty. Hailing from Cleveland, the band's humble beginnings on a local teen dance show led to a whirlwind recording session, resulting in an album that belies its rushed production. Despite the time constraints, Tiffany Shade's meticulous arrangements shine through and shows their talent and dedication to their craft. The band's inexperience with studio recording only adds to the charm of their debut album, as recalled by bassist Robb Murphy and guitarist Mike Barnes. Their enthusiasm for experimenting with overdubs and embracing new recording technologies of the time is evident throughout the album, adding layers of depth to their already enchanting sound. Drawing comparisons to the Bosstown sound, Tiffany Shade's harmonious vocals and versatile instrumentation create a very engaging and beloved album.

The album reflects on the land in the region of their hometown Jatiwangi, on the northern shores of Java, and the tension between love for their home and the grim portent of industrialisation. Led by the strident, meandering guitar sound as it careers through all manner of moody landscapes, it's an engrossing trip-out and a sincere expression from a community which neatly proves the international power of psych rock as a vessel for a message.

The three singles released ahead of the album promise a seamless continuation of Crumb's dreamy atmosphere and intricate melodies. Lila Ramani's ethereal vocals, accompanied by Brian Aronow's synth wizardry, Jesse Brotter's solid basslines, and Jonathan Gilad's precise drumming, create a captivating sonic journey. Review: After the 50th anniversary of the Blue Oyster Cult in 2021, the band went to work on their final release. Titled Ghost Stories, the highly expected conclusion to their storied career, brings a rush of nostalgia for fans of the prog rock titans. This album features recently reimagined and completed tracks that have been looming in the band history, mostly dating from 1978 to 1983 unreleased. Some of the material is from sessions workshopping material for an album, some is from performance rehearsals. These tracks were originally recorded hoping to complete and or revisiting when the time is right. There is no better time than being the final release of the legendary band's history.

Review: Ceremony-Buddha Meet Rock remains a captivating enigma from the early seventies Japanese underground scene. Composers Yusuke Hoguchi and Naoki Tachikawa lead the charge, crafting an album deeply rooted in the flower power counterculture, infused with mysticism, and adorned with trippy guitar work, creating an otherworldly sonic journey. Opening with a rendition of David Axelrod's 'Holy Thursday' ,the album sets a mesmerizing tone that persists throughout. Buddha chants permeate the tracks, adding layers of spiritual depth to the ancestral musical performances. Originally released in 1971, Ceremony-Buddha Meet Rock remains a shining light to the era's experimental spirit and artistic innovation. Its originality and enduring impact solidify its place as a standout gem from the eastern musical landscape of the time.

Review: Clem Alford's one-shot project presents a captivating fusion of Westernized ragas, featuring Alisha Sufit's enchanting vocals and Jim Moyes's psych-leaning guitar elements. Tracks like 'Alan's Christmas Card' and 'Black Cat' showcase the unique blend of Indian instruments with Western touches, while 'La La' and 'Take Away Kesh' delve into more traditional compositions. This album serves as a fascinating historical piece, highlighting the skill of Alford and Moyes in blending Indian and Western sounds. Recommended for fans of indo-prog and world music, it captures a technical zeitgeist at the intersection of cultural influences. With its creativity and historical significance, this album earns high marks for cultural reasons as much as musically.

Review: Wildly compelling, sludgy doom-ified version of classic Slayer songs from Bob Balch of Fu Manchu fame, allegedly inspired by teaching a student to play South of Heaven south of 100 bpm. Its an intoxicating combination, with Balch's furiously fuzzed out guitar tones proving the perfect bed for Amy Barrysmith and Laura Pleasants' vocals to ring out over. The more musically complex passages in Slayer's classics really shine at this tempo, and they work suprisingly well as squalling, sprawling, longform trips.

Review: The Blossom Toes' single Postcard is a gem, with the Side-1 offering a gentle, well-crafted pop song reminiscent of Sgt. Pepper's. 'Postcard's' light, jaunty melody is irresistibly catchy, earning comparisons to Paul McCartney's Beatles work. The Side-2, a jazzy minor-key lament, features a superb solo by Brian Godding, evoking the psychedelic vibe of the era. Overall, this obscure non-LP single stands out as a favorite Blossom Toes release, encapsulating the band's diverse musical influences and showcasing their talent for crafting memorable tunes.

Review: Child's reissue of Blueside is a transcendent journey into the heart of psychedelic blues. With their second LP, they amplify their fuzzy blues sound, infusing it with a stimulating drive and hypnotic allure. Tracks like 'Nailed to the Ceiling' and 'Blue Side of the Collar' exude chill yet sludgy nostalgia, while 'Dirty Woman' and 'The Man' take seductive, gospel-infused approaches, reminiscent of Robert Johnson. Child's wisdom in crafting psychedelic acid blues music sets them apart, marking a true revival of the genre. Review: Child's album Soul Murder is a strong vintage blend of blues and hard rock, displaying the band's raw emotion and powerful musicality. With subtle nods to Black Sabbath and 60s psychedelia, the album delivers a unique sound that resonates deeply with listeners. Tracks like 'Free and Humble' and 'Trouble With a Capital 'T'' exude moody blues vibes, with Mathias Northway's exceptional vocals leading the way. The rhythm section, comprised of Michael Lowe on drums and Rhys Kelly on bass, provides a solid foundation for Northway's exquisite guitar work. Standout tracks like 'Standing On My Tail' and 'Feels Like Hell' reveal the band's versatility, incorporating soulful elements and edgy bass lines to create dynamic compositions. 'Moment In Time' delivers both anger and melancholy in equal measure. Overall, Soul Murder is a very strong album for fans of blues, hard rock and honest songwriting, due mainly to Child's impeccable musicianship and emotive performances.

Review: Chaos Rocks, the fourth album from Alan Davey's Hawkestrel project, continues the forward-looking trajectory initiated by The Future Is Us five years ago. The record maintains the project's tradition of star-studded collaborations. Notably, former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor joins in, lending his guitar prowess to tracks alongside legends like Bob Calvert and Nik Turner. While 'Evil Rock' features Calvert's classic vocal from his Hype LP, the numbers with Turner and Huw Huw Lloyd-Langton offer fresh material. Davey sheds light on the inclusion of unreleased recordings, explaining that Turner's contributions were recorded six years ago, while Cleopatra Records secured the rights to Lloyd-Langton's guitar playing. Despite the passing of Mick Slattery, whose contributions are acknowledged, Chaos Rocks stands as a testament to Hawkestrel's commitment to preserving and evolving the legacy of these iconic musicians.

Original masters have been meticulously revived through digitisation and AI enhancement, with additional studio work by band members and drummers, a process described as "de-mixing" and "re-mixing" which has resulted in a revitalised collection of BOC's classic sound. A fitting farewell to a band that has left an enduring legacy in rock music. It's a testament to their artistry and dedication, offering fans a nostalgic journey through their archives while providing a glimpse into their creative process.
