Copenhagen (Record Store Day 2020)
Copenhagen (Record Store Day 2020) (limited 2xLP (side 4 etched)) (1 per customer)
Cat: 202020 017.
Review: It's no secret to anyone who has done their homework on US alternative rock of the early 90s, and specifically East Coast alternative rock, that Galaxie 500 should have been much bigger. Nevertheless, they remain one of the most under-appreciated and overlooked bands of their era, a bolt of beautiful but raucous indie guitar stuff that only lasted four short years, and three albums, but really was something special.

This reissue of their live album, a recording of the final show of their last European tour, certainly reflects this point. Seeming to call on influences from relatively disparate sub-genres of the day - the end of post punk, bloody-nosed rock and, in many ways, something along the lines of what was happening thousands of miles away in Manchester at the time, it's a soaring stunner that has as much stadium drive (the epic 'Fourth of July') as it does woozy and weird experimentation ('Spook').

Nativity In Black: A Tribute To Black Sabbath

Nativity In Black: A Tribute To Black Sabbath (limited coloured vinyl 2xLP)
Cat: RGM 1017.
Review: In many ways it's just another tribute album, albeit one that managed to rope in a particularly epic list of players from across the 1990s heavy metal, doom, and hard rock scenes. Seen in another light, though, Black Nativity is a bit of a history lesson, showing the significance, influence and long-standing impact of metal pioneers Black Sabbath.

Their work is so revered that here we've got the likes of Biohazard, Sepultura, and White Zombie sidling up next to more chartable names like Ugly Kid Joe and Faith No More. Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson also makes an appearance, as does Ozzy Osbourne, the most legendary member of Sabbath. In the end though, it all really proves the power of the original material and the band led by all time riff master, Tony Iommi - the longest and only continuous serving member of the outfit across five straight decades. RIP.

The Alternate Rumours
The Alternate Rumours (180 gram vinyl LP)
Cat: 603497 848300.
Review: If Rumours, the eleventh studio album by British-American legends Fleetwood Mac, is heralded among the greatest records of the 1970s, or indeed the 20th Century, then any attempt to rethink its contents needs to be good. Luckily, we're talking about arguably the most accomplished shape-shifters music has ever seen, starting life as a U.K. blues duo and morphing - at times a little jarringly - through various lineups and eventually into hugely influential and commercially successful American pop-rock act.

Suffice to say the troupe manage to pull some excellent alternative versions out of the bag here, then. Granted, they might struggle to stick like the originals of 'Gold Dust Woman' or 'The Chain', but that's an unfair comparison. Those tracks have long-since cemented a place in pop culture. The variations here are quality through and through in their own right, though, which is nothing short of a triumph when you're dealing with untouchable material.

Review: "I'm from the 60s, the time of "Louie Louie" and "Little Latin Lupe Lu"," Jonathan Richman memorably quips on the opening to his 1992 classic, 'I, Jonathan'. He then tells us those days are gone, but we can still have parties, and those parties can still carry the spirit of those days. Little does he know it's his attitude, rather than the parties, we all rely on to keep those fires alive.

Simply considering Richman as a nostalgist is missing the point. When this record arrived he was 41, and while much of his career had been dedicated to recreating doo-wap, rhythm and blues and early surf rock 'n' roll, he'd also been a staunch critic of what would now be labelled toxic masculinity and, on 1975's 'The Modern Lovers', helped steer guitar culture towards new punkish horizons. Even if he did so wearing the trappings of traditionalists. A true legend, here giving us one of his finest acoustic gems.

Idiot Savants
Idiot Savants (180 gram white vinyl LP)
Cat: DEMREC 658.
Review: By now most people know the story behind Rumours - one of the most decadent records ever made. It's not just the tales of cocaine-fuelled studio sessions and internal band strife that give this album edge, though. Lyrically the environment had a huge impact, relationship breakdowns and fuel for squabbles are common themes, but the sound itself is undeniably sharp and polished - like the glint of a knife as the light hits its blade or, perhaps more appropriately, a mirror.

Regardless of the background turbulence, this is quite simply one of the finest moments in pop and soft rock. 10million copies were sold within one month, and tracks like 'Go Your Own Way', 'The Chain' and 'Gold Dust Woman' became legendary genre classics. Most importantly, though, they still sound good today, reflecting the glory and talent that was the Mac in their finest hour.

It's Alive II
It's Alive II (limited numbered 180 gram vinyl 2xLP (side 4 etched))
Cat: 603497 848270.
Review: Definitely one for the heads, The Ramones record It's Alive is probably one of the best live albums ever released in the history of releasing live albums. A veritable AC/DC at Donnington (for the third time), only for punk rather than stadium heavy metal. Or at least that's our not-so humble opinion.

It's Alive was a sprawling, mind-bendingly expansive chapter in the iconic New York band's history, spanning no less than 28 tracks and two discs, although its genius is in the live emphasis. Songs like 'California Sun', 'Commando', and 'I Wanna Be Well' take on new, feverish urgency and rebellious swagger. Captured at a show in London on New Year's Eve in 1977, this new release is the counterpoint. As recorded at Victoria Hall, Stoke-On-Trent on 29th December 1977, It's Alive II is yet another time capsule showing off the raw energy and talent of this rightly revered outfit in their prime.

Review: The Fall's tenth album, like pretty much all the others, was met with a mixed critical response, but as well as containing one of the band's only two Top 40 UK singles - their cover of 'Victoria' by The Kinks, executed with a sideways swipe at the Victorian values of the Thatcher-led Tory government of the time - it's also got a stack of tracks that have grown to be Fall fan favourites. 'Carry Bag Man', autobiographical in a pretty loose sense, is compulsive and hilarious. The tight and taut glam stomp meet Krautrock drive of 'Bremen Nacht', complete with scraping violins and honking saxes, is about as good as the band gets in this particularly purple patch of their lengthy career. 'Athlete Cured' , as well as containing the priceless line "an odour resembling hot dogs / permeated his whole room", is all rockabilly aggression re-routed through synth drums and Moog washes, is essential Fall too.
As if that weren't enough, this re-issue package comes with a whole host of additional delights, including their biggest hit 'Ghost In My House', the electro hybrid anthem 'Hit The North', four radio session tracks, and their cover of The Beatles' 'Day In The Life', previously only available on an NME charity album. Far from being a Fall completist's dream - they will probably have everything on here anyway - this is actually a brilliant place to start discovering one of the most important and delight-inducing bands of the past half decade.

Expanded 25th Anniversary Edition
Review: 25 years is an awful amount of time when you really think about it. Certainly more than long enough for Elliott Smith's 'Expanded' to make it into the list of revered contemporary classics among cult musos. Looking back now, the mid-1990s seem like a lifetime ago, but the stunning guitar work, deeply personal and poignant songwriting that defined his landmark self-titled sophomore solo LP hasn't waned one bit.

Occupying a place that's perhaps somewhere between Alex Chilton and acoustic grunge, iconic tracks like 'Needle In The Hay' can't help but raise hairs on arms, even if you don't remember its quietly powerful impact when it first landed. 'Single File' still has that air of wonder and eccentricity to its lilting guitars, 'The White Lady Loves You More's meditative qualities are just as gradually awesome and the bonus disc - Smith's first ever solo live performance, recorded in 1994 - lays bare the late-artist's raw talent.

Tonight We're In The Dark Seeing Colors (purple & black splattered vinyl LP)
Cat: 936248 95060.
Review: The polished pop rock of Tegan and Sara has always come with hidden depths that counterbalance the lofty heights of their melodies, key-change crescendos and euphoric breakdowns. Last year's High School book proved, if there had been any doubts, that the often-delicate, usually life-affirming sounds the Canadian twins are known for is married to a lot of life experience and political motivation.

Their ongoing campaign work for LGBTQ rights, including setting up their own foundation, is a case in point, and it's impossible to separate the artists from their work - for all the right reasons in this instance. Tonight is a typically poetic example of why their music is so universally appealing, recorded live on tour in 2019 - from perfume punk to synth magic, these anthems are well worth buying into and the energy and love behind them is palpable. Uplifting, poignant and unarguably enjoyable.

Midnight Shift Demos
Cat: ERC 111. Rel: 09 Nov 20
  1. Here Comes Love (demo)
  2. Mr Zak (demo)
Review: Continuing the label's special 7"s releases that capture the nascent 80s post punk, dub, funk and pop - as examined on releases by The Jellies, Woo, Phantom Band, 4AM and more - here a discovery of unheard demos from Dislocation Dance's Midnight Shift album.
As part of the eighties Manchester scene, the band's pop and jazz sensibilities have continued to garner attention, offering a rightful place in the city's rich music history.
With the closure of Richard Boon's New Hormones label in 1982, they came to the attention of Geoff Travis' Rough Trade. Creating a home studio in the basement of an old rambling farmhouse in Withington, Ian Runacres (guitar, vocals), with lyricist Paul Emmerson (bass), set to work creating demos to garner a deal.
Inspired by the funk-disco of Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band debut album, Here Comes Love was written using Roland TR-606 drum machine, guitars, bass and (cheap) keyboard, its magical and lo-fi charmed quality melts hearts.
On Mr Zak, the fun Runacres had is evident. Written as an "indie" song, but with Aztec Camera and Burt Bacharrach on his mind, with Andy Diagram (trumpet) and Kathryn Way (vocals), hides a structure matching the album version, but which in its rudimentary instrumentation and production is unique and outshines the later version, to encase a specific period and innocence, of time.

Dead Kids RIP City, their latest album, is a vastly different beast. It was reportedly recorded over two years and is a concept album of sorts: a 10-track exploration of Portland's dark underbelly that tells the "fractured and fragile legacies of those lost during the last couple of decades". Review: Traditionally the liner notes of an album take on a kind of third-party address, where a writer is delivering their thoughts about how an album makes them feel without breaching that space where they are representing themselves or the moment in time directly to the reader. The goal is typically a kind of timelessness, but as we live in unprecedented times, unconventional methods take on new life, and hopefully importance. In the spirit of that idea... man, is this the kind of album we all need right now. So many of us feel like we're constantly walking a tightrope, are feeling like we can't unwind, are in genuine need of a few moments of respite. Every so often an album emerges from an artist that most likely did not realize when they were composing how timely the results would be, and Lofi Dimensions is exactly that kind of record. It doesn't really matter why it's coming when it is, what's important is that it's here, offering peace to the perturbed and inspiration for the downcast. The American Dollar have long been one of those artists operating in a kind of middle ground, a band with a long history of creating moving instrumental rock that has somehow avoided ever becoming synonymous with modern American post-rock acts. They retain a sort of autonomy in a valued position just outside the boundaries of classification. Blending electronic textures with moving guitar and keyboard melodies, their music has always traveled somewhere in the spaces between trip-hop, electronic, post-rock and ambient, and this inability to be defined is ultimately what sets them apart from the trappings of genre, allowing them to be whatever they want The American Dollar to be in a given moment, always on their terms.

Review: Static X should be considered a metal institution, not simply a band. Rising to prominence in 1993, when the industrial edges of debut album Wisconsin Death Trip attracted attention from then-burgeoning nu metal heads, they retained relatively consistent output for almost 20 years after that, during which time the line-up went through several iterations before disbanding a year before founder Wayne Static's death, in 2014.

Project Regeneration Volume 1 is a mighty return for this hammer-blow outfit, then, and given the evolutionary nature of their story so far it's a next chapter. And a step in some different directions. Of course there are still ferocious riffs and snarled vocals by the ravage load, but the synthy and electronic nuances that have long been audible are brought to centre stage here, not least on the death techno of 'My Destruction', and the psy-trance loops of opener 'Regeneration'.

Folk N Roll Vol 1: Tales Of Isolation
Review: We're starting to see, or at least hear, a number of releases that have been forged in the depths of coronavirus lockdown despair, but few wear that badge of honour on their sleeves quite like the appropriately-titled 'Folk N' Rock Vol.1: Tales of Isolation'.

Astoundingly, celebrated Nigerian born troubadour Ondara - known to some as J.S. Ondara, although the letters have now been officially dropped- composed and produced the 11 tracks here during a single week spent under stay at home order in Minneapolis, and the results are astounding. The artist himself described the experience as compulsive, "a kind of vomit of words, melodies". Take from that what you will, the record is a stunning collection of personal thoughts, musings, fears and hopes laid bare across some captivating acoustic serenades. It's basically impossible not to fall in love with it, or ideally to it.

Highlights & Lowlights 1983-1987
Cat: 785234

Softcover book
Notes: Grim Humour was a UK fanzine which existed for eighteen editions, between 1983 and 1993. It received good reviews and favourable attention from the outset, partly due to its often sarcastic or caustic tone (which became more pronounced with later editions) and its focusing on many groups who arrived from the post-punk music landscape that originated in the DIY sensibilities of the time. Although initially assembled by a group of friends whose passion for the music they wished to document far overrode their artistic or writing skills, the fanzine soon developed in every respect and even became (inter)nationally distributed to independent record stockists, resulting in larger print runs and, with the later editions, a more semi-professional approach that never once betrayed the attitudinal stance of the early issues. This collection is dedicated to re-edited interviews, reviews and suchlike from the first ten editions, reprints of a number of the original pages, bonus material and several contributions by those who were involved with the 'zine, championed it or were part of the very same enclave it pulsated in. Due to the fact many of the original pages had colour backgrounds or were brimming with text bashed out on barely functioning typewriters, the idea of simply rewriting many of the features took hold as a sensible alternative itself open to being expanded on and contextualised. The features include interviews with The Fall, Killing Joke, Crass, Coil, 400 Blows, Sonic Youth, In The Nursery, Head Of David, Virgin Prunes, The Damned, Nick Cave, The Ramones, Fool's Dance (featuring Simon Gallup of The Cure), And Also The Trees, Alternative TV, Portion Control, Big Black and others, plus many reviews, a couple of rants and far more besides. It is hoped this book illuminates a tiny segment of a culture now long gone and never to be repeated. Given just how many of those concerned remain active to this day in one capacity or another, this is far more than a simple nostalgia trip.

The Doobie Brothers Quadio Boxed Set
Cat: 060349 7857975. Rel: 06 Nov 20
Review: Blu-Ray Audio Boxed Set Spotlights Four Of The Band's Essential Early Albums With Quadraphonic And High-Resolution Stereo Mixes Of Toulouse Street, The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, And Stampede.

The Doobie Brothers celebrate two major milestones this year as the band marks its 50th anniversary and its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November. The 50th Anniversary Tour that was also planned for this year has been rescheduled for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic (new tour dates below). This will be the first time that principal band members Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons and John McFee have toured together in more than 25 years.

Before the band is welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rhino will release a new boxed set that highlights some of the music that helped make the Doobie Brothers one of the most popular bands of its generation. THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO will feature quadraphonic mixes of Toulouse Street, The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and Stampede. The four Blu-ray audio discs come in replicas of the original vinyl record sleeves and are all packaged together in a clamshell box.

For this collection, all four albums have been mastered using the original four-track Quad mixes. The set includes both the quadraphonic and high-resolution stereo (19224 DTS-HD Master Audio) mixes for each album. To enjoy the Quadraphonic mix as intended, the Blu-ray audio discs should be played using Surround Sound.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO brings together four essential albums from the band's early days. It begins with the group's second album, Toulouse Street, which was released in July 1972. The record achieved platinum status and launched the group to stardom with the hits "Listen to The Music," "Rockin' Down the Highway" and "Jesus is Just Alright."

The following year, the band returned with The Captain & Me, which was certified double-platinum on the strength of hits "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove," as well as fan favorites "South City Midnight Lady" and "Without You." These back-to-back classic albums represent one of the greatest one-two vinyl punches of the 1970s. Many songs from the albums are still played every day on the radio, a testament to the timelessness of the music.

In 1974, the Doobie Brothers released the group's fourth album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. The record peaked at #4 on the albums chart and was certified double-platinum. It also featured the band's first #1 hit, "Black Water," which was originally released as the B-side to "Another Park, Another Sunday."

Stampede is the final studio album featured in THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO. Released in April 1975 and certified gold, it also peaked at #4 on the albums chart. It includes the Top 40 hits "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)" and "Sweet Maxine." Stampede would be The Doobie Brothers' last studio album with original singer/guitarist Tom Johnston until he re-joined the band in 1989.
