Joaquin Joe Claussell Presents Praise (Unofficial Edits & Overdubs)
Myrna Summers & The Combined Choirs Of The Refreshing Strings - "So Much To Live For"
Bishop Jeff Banks & The Revival Temple Mass Choir - "Jerusalem" (New edit)
Review: 'Praise' was first released under the Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell banner in 2013 as a full package of CD-bound gospel-house transcenders. Part of the Gospel Music According To Joe Claussell series, the moment marked the apogee of the DJ and producer's stint in the world of edits and overdubs, after which he'd move into spiritual house musics of a less sample-based making. Now, however, we return to 'Praise' with two special edits cut to a limited edition 12" sampler, harkening a return to the form and a bigger box set in the series to come, a decade on; first we're met with Myrna Summers and her choir on 'So Much To Live For', which lays bare the holy-ghostly hooks and kick-clapped stamps; then there's a similar edit of Bishop Jeff Banks' 'Jerusalem', which whips out the Hammonds and sopranos for the B.

Nautilus - "Georgy Porgy" (feat John Turrell & Toni L)
Nautilus - "Let's Stay Together" (feat Keyco)
Review: Japanese jazz masters Nautilus strike back again with their first release of 2024, 'Georgy Porgy', a special label collaboration between Oonops Drops and their Japanese label Urban Discos (Diskunion). The title number is a cover version of the yacht rock classic 'Georgy Porgy', with Nautilus' version heard performed alongside UK-based vocalist songwriter and vocalist John Turrell, one half of Smoove & Turrell, and German legend Toni-L. Theirs is a slick and maximised rendition. On the flipside is a similar classic versioning; a sweet cover version of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together', albeit this time coming with the vocal talents of Japanese singer Keyco and brought with it a crisp, headroomy neo-soulful bent.

Hurry Up Tomorrow
Review: This is a reissue of a rare soul single by The Nu' Rons, a vocal quartet from Salem, NJ who recorded only around four singles in their still-strong career. Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

Review: Wah Wah welcome the return of multi-talented Norwegian producer Espen Horne, following a 24 year hiatus. Sometimes, such resurfacings must happen - even after such long periods of time - if only to reaffirm the round-robin integrity of the label. The Anatomy Of Serene Eloquence is thus the logical, LP-form follow-up to 1999's acid jazz single/EP 'Magnetica', which, though released only to furtive acclaim, launched the label's reputation as a pusher of delights. This new one, however, makes for a remarkably different turn in sound, coming as a full-length of ambient, tremolo-ing and glistening jazz-funk verging on hip-hop (though certainly cut from the same cloth as 'Magnetica'). Vocalists and instrumentalists such as Olav Wollo, Faye Houston and Aich are kept firmly in tow, squeezing the icing onto an already spongy, delicious sonic gateau.

Review: Patrice Rushen's Remind Me: The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978-1984 celebrates the unmatched talent of a jazz and r&b legend whose influence extends far beyond her chart success. Rushen's songs, including hits like 'Forget Me Nots' and 'Haven't You Heard,' have left an indelible mark on popular music, with countless artists sampling her work. Despite facing criticism and lackluster label support, Rushen's crossover into sophisticated urban pop paved the way for future R&B and hip-hop hits. This compilation shows Rushen's talents as a musician and arranger, with her production providing the building blocks for decades of musical innovation. Tracks like 'Givin' It Up Is Givin' Up' and 'Remind Me' highlight Rushen's electrifying performances and innovative sound. Review: Previously unreleased, Joe Bataan (real name Bataan Nitollano) recorded the bulk of the material making up Drug Story in 1972. This new, highly limited box set hears seven revered, rarely-heard gems of Latin jazz, deep soul, raucous boogaloo, and heavy salsa by the legend, most of which were largely salvaged from his very own self-run Ghetto Records vaults. Drug Story was inspired by true events, and hears Bataan croon graciously over themes of destitution, lost family members and friends, and addiction. One of three definitive reissues of Bataan's greatest works, licensed from Bataan himself, with his oversight and input into a 15 page oversized book by Pablo Yglesia,s that details Bataan's larger-than-imagination life and his little Latin label that could.

Review: The self-titled name of the debut album featuring Luther Vandross is reissued for the first time by Sony. Originally released in 1976, Luther was a five person soul, disco and rhythm and blues ensemble with Luther Vandross as the lead vocalist. A popular session singer at the time, Luther eventually outgrew the band and went solo, but not before two full albums worth of material - this being the first. At the time, the record flew under the radar with the singles 'It's Good For The Soul' and 'Funky Music (Is A Part Of Me)' not making much of an impact on the charts. As the years have gone on and with the success of Luther as well as the resurgence in music of the period, the two albums have gained a lot of interest.

Review: Swing Out Sister's 2004 Where Our Love Grows was a delightful return to their signature retro soul sound, reissued in 2024 to the delight of both devoted fans and new listeners alike. Led by Corinne Drewery's crystalline vocals and Andy Connell's composing prowess, the album offers a lush pop experience reminiscent of the late-sixties/early-seventies era. With tracks like the enchanting 'Love Won't Let You Down,' Swing Out Sister effortlessly blends swing, downtempo, synth-pop, and jazzdance elements, creating a fresh yet familiar sonic landscape. The album exudes warmth and nostalgia while maintaining a contemporary edge, showcasing the band's enduring appeal and ability to craft irresistibly dreamy songs. Where Our Love Grows is a great example to Swing Out Sister's unique presence in the pop music scene, reminding listeners why they've maintained a dedicated following throughout their acclaimed career.

Review: Before his breakthrough as a solo artist, Luther Vandross was part of the quintet singing group Luther along with Anthony Hinton, Diane Sumler, Theresa V. Reed, and Christine Wiltshire. The group recorded two albums with little success. By the time This Close To You was recorded, Luther took the lead in the band with his standout voice and showmanship. A natural frontman, the Luther project closed as he naturally went solo shortly after and signing to Epic records. Luther later on bought the rights to the first two albums and after man years of rumors, they are now reissued. Recorded and released in 1977, the album is blend of soul, disco and ballads. Luther Vandross fans will rejoice at discovering and rediscovering him front some more disco sounds. The album is a great glimpse into his legendary voice in its infancy.

Review: Chicago was a hotbed for talent in the 1970s (well, it always has been and always will be, to be honest) and one of the groups to emerge at that time was Heaven & Earth, a vital soul vocal collective. They released four high-quality albums and this one, 'I Can't Seem To Forget You', was the first on Clarence Johnson's G.E.C. Label. It is packed with super sweet vocals and Dwight Dukes' lush falsetto and has never before been reissued. This version from the good folks at P-VINE has an extra bonus cut 'Promises,' which has previously only been available as a single from 1975.

Review: This is the first reissue of the much-anticipated compilation gathering together many gems from the Louisiana born singer Bettye Swann. This compilation gathers and enormous 22 tracks from the career to highlight her career. Bettye rose to to acclaim with her 1967 soul classic 'Make Me Yours' which not only climbed to #21 on the Billboard 100 but also became a #1 on the rhythm and blues charts. Once she signed to Capital record a few years later, she had a second top 40 hit with 'Don't Touch Me'. The compilation has so many underrated songs from her career that just didn't get the attention that they deserved - see the excellent 'Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)' and the amazing cover of 'Tell it like it is'. Review: Jackpot US reissue the 1967 Impulse! standout and instrumental masterpiece from Mel Brown, Chicken Fat. Initially working as a guitar player for such greats as Sonny Boy Williamson & Etta James, Impulse! eventually offered Mel Brown the chance to record his own material. Recorded in 1967 in Hollywood, CA, Brown amassed a group of session musicians who had previously played with Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye, and Dizzy Gillespie. Much of the album was arranged by Oliver Nelson, who worked with Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith and more. His touch is felt all over the record and helps solidify the journey; these sessions reflect the Sunset Strip and the energy of late 60s Los Angeles so accurately that you can almost hear the go-go boots hit the floor.

Review: Canada's famously vibrant funk scene has given rise to many gems over the years and now one of them is getting a reissue on P-Vine complete with an obi-strip. The Sidewinders' much-coveted album, Flatfoot Hustlin' is a real gem that emanates the spirit of deep-rooted funk. Famously it was recorded in the same studio as Professor Lett and Study's Love Serenade which further details about it have long been unknown and mysterious. That has only added to its allure and appeal amongst the rare groove community but of course, the music itself is the real draw. Featured tracks like 'I Like To Dance' and 'Flat Foot Hustli'' cannot fail to ignite dancefloors, while 'Time For Loving' is a more smooth groove and 'Gift to the Sun' gets nice and heavy making this an essential cop for funk aficionados.

Review: Sade's debut album Diamond Life (1984) introduced a distinctive blend of minimalistic soul and jazz-infused pop, contrasting sharply with the synth-heavy trends of its time. Lead vocalist Sade Adu's modest contralto and understated elegance enchanted listeners, earning comparisons to legends like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. The album's standout track, 'Smooth Operator,' showed the band's penchant for crafting sophisticated, emotionally resonant music amidst a backdrop of serene instrumentation. Diamond Life navigates themes of love, commitment, and everyday struggles with an understated grace, epitomized by tracks like 'Hang On to Your Love' and 'Your Love Is King.' Sade's ability to convey depth and desire with concise lyricism and atmospheric melodies set her apart as a master storyteller in the realm of blues-infused pop. The album's subdued tones and atmospheric production create a stunning sonic landscape that remains impactful. Diamond Life made Sade a household name as a pioneering figure in minimalist soul, setting the stage for her illustrious career and leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.

Review: Ray & His Court's self-titled album, is a rare gem in the realm of Latin funk. Led by the late Ray Fernandez, this family band from Miami brought a unique blend of influences to their music, incorporating elements of deep funk, soul, calypso, Afro-Cuban, and salsa. What set them apart was their versatility and unconventional instrumentation, utilizing a bass clarinet instead of saxophones and Osi drums from Africa instead of bongos. The album's fusion of psychedelic vibes with Latin rhythms captivated listeners and left an indelible mark on Miami's Latin music scene in the late 70s. Sampled by DJs worldwide, including the renowned DJ Shadow, Ray & His Court's music continues to resonate with audiences today. This newly remastered vinyl reissue, pressed on audiophile virgin vinyl, offers a pristine listening experience for aficionados of Latin, funk, and rare groove music. It's a classic album from the five-piece soul vocal fronted by Phil Perry who is still in the game as a solo artist. The band hailed from St. Louis, Missouri with a soul sound so rich and distinctive you will fall in love with it from the first harmony. Review: Brainstory's sophomore album, Sounds Good, marks a significant evolution for the LA-based trio. From signing with Big Crown Records to navigating the challenges of COVID, they've honed their craft and tightened their sound. Produced by Leon Michels, the album showcases Brainstory's expanded brotherhood and their ability to blend genres seamlessly. Tracks like 'Nobody But You' and 'Peach Optimo' reveal new facets of their musical range, while 'Gift Of Life' delves into existential themes with haunting beauty. With contributions from Claire Cottrill on 'Hanging On,' and introspective tracks like 'Too Yung,' Brainstory delivers a deeply personal and musically rich experience. Sounds Good is not just an album title, but a testament to Brainstory's growth and the genuine bonds that fuel their artistry.

Review: Descending out of the southern night sky through a turbulent cloud of dreams, memory, longing and psychedelia, Saigon Soul Revival's second full length album Moi Luong Duyen represents the latest act in the group's resuscitation of the raw, heavy and subversive sounds of 1960s and 70s Saigon. The populous city of Vietnam - also known as Ho Chi Minh City - is here heard reflected in the sophisticated performances of and by the band, who do well to capture the original sound of that city, driven by western influences like rock, bolero, soul, jazz and the rich heritage of Vietnamese ballads, delivering a seamless blend of genres and traditional instrumentation.

Review: Prolific Aussie soul-singer, producer, writer, multi-instrumentalist and live talent Jordan Rakei turns out the albums at a fair old rate of knots these days but this might be his best yet. It is one that finds the sweet, sweet crooner continues to explore subtle new sound and sub-genres in absorbing new ways. This fifth full length is his first for Verve Forecast and Decca UK which he recently signed for and, we're told, "coincides with several profound changes in his personal life, including becoming a father for the first time." It was self-produced by the man himself at RAK Studios and comes on limited green vinyl.

Musically Adrift (blue vinyl LP)

Review: Samuel Purdey's Musically Adrift is a hidden gem from the mid-90s, lost in the shuffle of Brit Pop but now resurfacing thanks to the efforts of music enthusiast Tim 'Love' Lee. Originally shelved by Sony Records and released only in Japan, this album combines elements of AOR, soul, and funk into a timeless masterpiece. With contributions from acclaimed musicians like Elliot Randall and Neil Cowley, as well as mixing by Grammy winners Elliot Scheiner and Bob Power, the pedigree of Musically Adrift is undeniable. The album's expert songwriting, exquisite arrangements, and top-notch musicianship pay homage to its influences, including Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, and Earth Wind & Fire. With its long-overdue reissue, Musically Adrift finally receives the recognition it deserves, cementing its status as a cult classic worth revisiting for fans of sophisticated, soulful music.
