Review: After the success of the 2 Late 4 Love EP, Roy Of The Ravers returns to Emotional Response with a double LP with a deeper perspective, experimenting in ambient and drone textures, lucid techno travails and acid interludes.
Recorded between 1997 and 2017, the album was pieced together over the last six months after Roy's archives were first feared lost and then found. Approached by the label to release a follow up with something more introspective and personal, it was discovered that a recent move to a new studio had led to over 20 years of music being misplaced after it was believed they were mistakenly dropped at a local charity store. However, deep in a box of what were thought to be patch cables were in fact the decades worth of hard drives and here presented, is a sample of those lost recordings.
The nature of the music is introspection, eschewing the acid beats and white noise for a personal encounter between man and machine. The orchestral opening of the title track gives way to the submarine beats, pulsing TB303 and gliding hats of Robinson College 10 to set the outlook to come. Even with the scattering A Dim And Distant Past waking lulled senses, the melodies and feel all lead to a pause and reflect rather than jump and shout.
This is continued with the haunting drives of Bounce Erec and Oriental X0X-Press; the twisted, warped jams of The Weber Traum Boat Pt.3, Ichi and Roland Corp Labs 05; and the beautiful, heartfelt odes in Sade Lost Theme, The Clock House Pt.2 and closer, Nemesis '01. The album's melodic nature hums and shines as CS (6x8) appears as much a centre piece as a alternative consideration to the acid tinged, club bangs of Roy's releases to date.
A surprise package maybe, but in the rolling, word of mouth phenomena that was Emotinium II, all this and more was sensed and so White Line Sunrise II, spreading across 12 songs of contrasting moods, is a further affirmation that there is something good and worthy of exploration

Review: Exit planet earth by 20/20 Vision is a new series of various artist vinyl releases, selected and compiled by ralph lawson. There is a truly heavy weight selection of artists involved in the project and the first edition 'carbon' leads with contributions from two of the most influential electro producers of all time The Hacker and 214, who both deliver unforgiving hard hitting excursions to future worlds. On the other side Reedale Rise sheds some light with 'Lux' before the record is beautifully closed with an uplifting composition for space travel - 'The Gap' by Derek Carr. Artwork is supplied in a collectible series of spectrographs in limited edition spot colour sleeves.A

  1. Slowhand
  2. Tall For His Height
  3. Kez
Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. From the machine soul trysts of "Slow Hand" to the woozy techno thrust of "Tall For His Height" and the atmospheric house wriggle of "Kez", this release is a classic through and through. Beat the sharks and nab a copy of this long out-of-print gem.

Review: Carl Finlow is one of The UK's unsung electro heroes. On "Hashtag", he's remixed by another criminally underrated British electro and dance music wizard: Radioactive Man (a.k.a. Keith Tenniswood). This tight jam from 2013 finally got a wider audience last year thanks to Helena Hauff's memorable Denkmantel set. "Hashtag" combines Drexciya-referencing synth work with the perfect amount of acid flourish and a menacingly gliding bassline. Re-released due to high demand and mint copies selling for L160 on discogs. Pure bliss.

Review: Miles Sagnia has a deep-rooted backstory in the UK underground techno scene. Under his own name and as Miles Atmospheric he's produced consistently compelling techno for labels like Finale Sessions, FireScope, Aesthetic Audio and Applied Rhythmic Technology. Such associations point to the soundworld Sagnia inhabits - a harmonically balanced strain of deep-diving brain food that favours expressive musicality and inventive programming over rigid functionality.

Having previously appeared as Miles Sagnia on Ornate back in 2010, he returns to the label as Miles Atmospheric with three cuts that explore melancholic moods through artful interplay between beautifully rendered synth tones and intricate drum machine excursions. These tracks still move with purpose and presence, but the end goal is more cerebral than physical - a perfect fit for the immersive experiences Ornate has always strived to promote.

Cat: PALINOIALTD 001. Rel: 17 Apr 20
  1. Donato Dozzy - "Aquatica"
  2. Eric Cloutier - "Ekpyrosis"
Review: Eric Cloutier has decided to launch a new offshoot to his consistently impressive Palinoia label. The basic idea seems to be limited edition EPs featuring tried-and-tested club cuts from like-minded machine abusers. To begin this sub-label debut in style, he offers up a killer cut from pal Donato Dozzy that's as hypnotic and mind-altering as you'd expect. Built around a rock solid kick-drum pattern, hissing cymbals and a deep bassline, "Aquatica" is sparse, unearthly and intoxicating, with trippy noises, metallic electronics and watery sounds bubbling across the sound space. Cloutier takes over on side B with "Ekpyrosis", a thrusting, muscular mixture of locked-in grooves, faintly foreboding psychedelic acid motifs and the kind of swelling chords that make your synapses snap.

Review: Vigenere is creating a mysterious vibe with its obscure collaborative releases, but the music speaks for itself as it plots a course through deeper realms of the dance. After contributing to the first release, Malin Genie is back and seemingly flying solo for a more direct trip into dubby techno territory - that's certainly the vibe on opening immersion heater "Eschaton". "Drain" has a more tripped out minimal flavour with the after hours in mind, while "Venus" swaps moody atmospheres out for a hazy shuffler peppered with slices of warm instrumentation. "Elara" brings things full circle with another crooked dub-out to bring eyelids down heavy in a state of transcendental bliss.

  1. Exist On

  3. Wayne County Stomp
Review: After five years of on-off collaborations and side projects, Aaron 'FIT' Siegel has finally got round to making a new solo record. It's rather good, with startling A-side "Exist On" delivering a brilliant blend of breakbeat-driven turn of the '90s grooves, chunky bass, ultra-dreamy chords and the kind of bleeping top-end melodies more readily associated with the early releases of Warp Records. Title track "Formula" moves even further towards bleep techno territory via deep space chords, thumping techno beats, Kraftwerkian lead lines and the kind of distorted analogue bass found on LIES releases, while "Wayne County Stomp" sounds like a mutated, mind-altering cover of Steve Poindexter's "Computer Madness".

Review: The second release from Music Makes Us is produced by a young, up and coming producer from Leeds. Einerlei has an unrivaled ability to create long revolving landscapes of techno, which over the course of the track take you on a journey, adding subtle elements as you listen, but retaining the core rif. This ability to create a whole piece of music out of a simple melody may seem simple in its delivery, but as you listen you notice the varying layers that make up these two driving dub techno tracks.

Review: Following two well received releases on 20/20 Vision - 'Machine Life' & 'Asimov's Code' Versalife returns to the label with his latest album 'Manifold' serving up futuristic electro with signature emotive synth work to trigger the imagination. The Dutch producer Boris Bunnik aka Conforce continues his dystopian journey with auditory echoes of a cosmic abyss. Peppered with moody tones, deep bass lines and robotic funk, 'Manifold' navigates the future landscape in true Versalife fashion.

Review: After a busy Summer on the road, South London's Silverlining returns to his home-grown imprint for the tenth release on his cult series. The EP opens with his sublime 2019 remix of Arctor and Jay Hill, previously unrleased on vinyl. On the flip are two reissues: the first of his 1998 remix of Ravi McArthur from Reverberations; and a Detroit-inspired electro track written at the tender age of 19 back in 1995 under his early Spook in the House guise.

Review: TerraFirm's fifth release comes courtesy of Vytamin, a debutant producer with a fetish for the more psychedelic aspects of electronic music culture. For proof, check opener "Conquete", a bustling chunk of trippy acid electro rich in 1980s style Fairlight stabs, or the bustling track that follows, the funk-fuelled electro-breaks retro-futurism of "Telemetro". There's a slightly more intergalactic feel to similarly thickset flipside opener "Speed Limit" (an ear-pleasing slab of tech-funk filled with squiggly synth lines and bubbly bass), while closing cut "Outer Rim" is a slightly tougher and alien-embracing dance through far-sighted electro-breaks pastures.

Review: Last year U.S techno veteran Mike Parker took time out to look back on his career, in the process offering up a collection of 'Early Works' and a couple of reissues of some of his most celebrated late '90s works. Here he kicks off a new series on Spazio Disponibile, "The Devil's Curators", and it's a little different to what you might expect. The five cuts are as deep and hypnotic as ever, but far from standard techno slammers. In fact, the rhythms are inventive and off-kilter, with Parker either breaking up the beats or experimenting with halftime beats. Throw in a couple of loopy, beat-free modular experiments and you have a rock solid set of mixing tools for inventive techno DJs.

Zeta Reticula has strong releases on top labels such as Electrix & Mechatronica. With this EP for Monotone, we experience the solid sounds and refined Electro styles that Zeta is known for. The title tune, Digital Card is groovy while maintaining a constant build up of energy throughout. The remix from Exzakt & BFX takes it to a different place with their signature deep bass sound. Both of these are ready to tear up speakers in clubs around the globe. The B side keeps the EP going with a brilliant number, Endless Clue. Solid percussion and industrial growling basslines. Going a bit deeper however maintaining the club vibes. Finally Message In Code offers a fantastic ending to this Electro EP. 303, 808 & 909.

Review: The relationship between Calypso and Vilnius is quite strong. This is why this time they invited local talent Plot Pilot to share a release with label boss Thomass Jackson. The A side is Jackson's time to deliver his two edits. First one is a bongo driven, afro robotic vocals, breakish trance extravaganza. While the second one goes straight for the chin with it's vocals who comand you to work work work! The lithuanian boys deliver a cosmic bomb full of psicodelic guitars and bleepy noises on their first one and for the second one the pay tribute with a to the lithuanian seaside where every summer the famous Ant Bangos festival takes place.
