Balance (7")
Cat: BHR 7003. Rel: 30 Jun 20
  1. Brother Culture - "Balance" (2:58)
  2. Jamtone - "Use It With Caution Dub" (feat Ital Horns) (3:00)
Review: Here comes a heavyweight, summer ready dub designed for naughtiness. It lands just in time for pubs and bars reopening so expect to hear it bleeding out into he streets form cars, sound systems and balconies as people soak up some rays. The explosive a-side features legendary MC and Brixton local Brother Culture with his "Balance", featuring vocal odes to the herb and wobbling riddims. On the b-side is the superbly heavy "Use it With Caution Dub" where the brass of the Ital Horns takes centre stage alongside dub master Jamtone.

I Am Wondering
Cat: JAMWAXMAXI 24. Rel: 11 Jun 20
  1. Robert Ffrench - "I Am Wondering" (7:55)
  2. Shortie Ranks - "Dance In A Skate Land" (4:09)
Review: Robert Ffrench originally laid this one down in Creative Sound Studio in Kingston in 1985, but it could well be hot off the press yesterday. Here it comes as a nice extended mix by DJ Shortie with some superb studio effects and spaced out trickery. Its sleek futuristic sound comes from the interstellar dancehall lead synth, a stunning thing that twists your mind inside out while the clean drums glide below. Add in the vocal toasts and it's a timeless classic. On the flip, Shortie Ranks offers "Dance In A Skate Land", a version that is subtle treated, with the echo upped and the lead drawn out to take you into another dimension.

Drifting Forwards EP
Drifting Forwards EP (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert & sticker)
Cat: WSR LF3. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. IZ 200 (6:09)
  2. Drifting Forwards (4:37)
  3. C Rota (6:45)
  4. Mondo (6:18)
Review: Well Street continues to be a hotbed of innovation in the cloudy climes of contemporary UK techno, with label mainstay Loop LF returning for his third EP. The record opens in subliminal style with the restrained, heavy-stepping sideswipe of "IZ 200" before melting into "Drifting Forwards," a richly dubbed-out dreamscape of clicking and popping percussion and sparkly chord drops with a purposeful swagger around the rhythm section. The B side kicks off with the nervy minimalist techno abstraction of "C Rota", where sound design plays a vital role alongside cyclical rhythms in creating a truly transcendent yet strikingly sparse sound. "Mondo" closes proceedings with one of the more forthright tunes on the record, following a strident if still proudly leftfield groove that captures a little '90s downtempo funk and gives it a cosmic, hi-def refit.

Don't Pressure Me
  1. Frankie Paul - "Don't Pressure Me" (3:31)

  3. Thriller U - "Give Me Collaterals" (3:39)
  4. Thriller U - "Give Me Collaterals" (version) (3:31)
Review: Top Ranking Sound continue their fine run of form with another big hitter this July. Frankie Paul leads the charge with "Don't Pressure Me" and its rugged drums, tumbling bass and hooky riffs. all with some summery steel drums layered in to finish things off in Caribbean style. Pinchers take the second slot with the more natty and physical "Grammy", which has a real edge to it as the drums roll on. Things slip into more digital territory on Thriller U's "Give Me Collaterals", which has oodles of echo and reverb to flesh out the bottom end. A second version offers another fresh perspective on this crisp dub.

Review: Underrated yet prolific singer Horace Martin's debut album from 1985 remains his best. It is one that fetches high prices on resale markets - if you can find it - so now gets a welcome reissue by Mister Tipsy. It was written at the time when dub, reggae, dancehall and rocksteady were all cross-pollinated with one another and so the nine tracks that make it up are both fresh yet familiar. From sweet rolling odes like "My Ghetto Queen" to slower, more thoughtful tracks like "Give Me Your Love" this is an album for lovers and thinkers alike.

Review: Jamaican-American singer Shaggy's Hot Shot album was a huge commercial success back in 2001. It was the second highest-charting studio album of the year on the Billboard Year-End charts and featured four hit singles in "It Wasn't Me", "Angel", "Luv Me, Luv Me" and the double A-side single "Dance & Shout / Hope". Mixing up reggae fusion, pop and dance hall it laid out a blueprint for the sound that has been referenced ever since, as well as giving a whole generation a number of classic club anthems. Now re-released on Virgin almost 20 years later, it still sounds as vital.
