DUPLOCXX PT2A (white vinyl 12")
Cat: DUPLOCXX PT2A. Rel: 18 Jan 24

Merricat Black - "Tricky Bizzness" (4:26)
Losco & ONHELL - "Carnal" (2:58)
Substrada - "Stonk Face" (4:37)
Wraz - "Wriggle" (4:12)
Review: Duploc continue to fly the flag for true-skool dubstep with their digital output and a renewed run of vinyl pressings. Duploc Blaxck Tapes 2.0 originally dropped back in 2022 and the tracks from the likes of Hamdi, Hypho and ENiGMA Dubz were instantly getting picked up by such respected selectors as Youngsta, Sicaria Sound and Riz La Teef. It's not hard to see why, given the label's declared focus on "the heavier dubstep sound" with incendiary results. If you want to test some subs with the gnarliest 140 gear around, this record is all you need.

Review: From Croatia to 'Koto', 207 takes us on another captivating instrumental adventure. The title track is an intricate weave of drums and tightly plucked eastern strings that builds on every 32. It's in good company as 'Mrtav' lives up to its name and leaves us all dead under its weighty subs and orchestrated tension, 'Clochard' is a woozy, soulful lament while 'Ziv' brings the EP to a physical halt with springy beats, techno-like humanised stabs and a sticky web of elements and flavours. 207 on a full 360 right here.

Review: High pressure manoeuvres from Ilian Tapes on this mysterious and highly limited one-off run. 'Pulse' is a Samurai style slab of hybrid dub techno that's layered in grains and textures whole 'Procedure' flips the UK garage two-step vibe into a distorted, crunchy and physical groove that's not dissimilar to Tim Wright's early work on Mute. Once again, a very special release from Ilian... Blink and you'll miss it.

Old Mount (4:44)
Bloody Mess (4:45)
Worms (4:34)
Review: 3WA returns to Foundation Audio with a monsters stepper that will loosen your bowels thanks to its serious low end wobble. The opener is the chief example of that with its stuttering kicks and prickly hits all underpinned by a warm, wubbing undercurrent of lovely bass. 'Old Mount' has another bottomlessly deep low end and lithe, shiny synths bring to mind an urban metropolis late at night and 'Bloody Mess' then cuts loose muffled vocals and slapping hits overlaid with manic melodies straight from an early computer game soundtrack. Closer 'Worms' slows things down to a predatory crawl.

Review: Portugal's 3WA is next up on the long running UK label Boka on a special, limited edition 10" vinyl with a unique metallic sticker design. This outing follows big tunes for 3WA on the likes of Crucial Recordings, Foundation Audio and Earth & Stone and serve sup more big bass drops and heavy rhythms. 'Sea Witch' is a cavernous tune with shards of lighting beaming down through it from above as flute leads hypnotise and the drums tumble ever further down below. 'Whale' then stutters on wobbly bass with watery chords up top adding to the sense of space.

Laser Lords (5:06)
King Of Style (5:09)
Review: Off to a firing start last year on the likes of Foundation Audio, FKOF, Crucial and 786, Portuguese darksmith 3WA has the honour of launching Earth & Stone, the new label from Subtle FM's Chalcraft. Taking off where the likes of "Viagem" and "Black Marsh" left us, the "Altair" EP is awash with spooky harmonics and eerie, creeped out textures and trippy off-beat drum patterns. The title track sets the parameters with its folding tubular bass that shoots up an octave or three when you least expect it, "Laser Lords" follows with a stern lesson in percussive persuasion wrapped up in a raffish Coki style bassline before "King Of Style" signs the deal off with a swaggering groove and techno attitude. 3WA? 3WOAH mate.

Review: Having soared us through the dense black marsh earlier this year, Portuguese deepsmith 3WA takes us through even swampier, intense territories with this Crucial debut. "Viagem" is like stepping into a deep boggy cave where the drips from the stalactites get heavier and the ground swallows you like quicksand. "Encanto" then hauls your keister out of there with insistent hang drum percussion and rolling kicks before blowing you dry with powerful flutes and pipes. Charmed.

Review: Foundation Audio team up two heavy hitters for this ode to heavy sound system music as a way of marking the label's 100th release. This limited edition hand-stamped 10" kicks off with the booming bass and snappy hits of 'Bumba' with its snaking leads and low end wub-wub recalling classic era dubstep. 'Poverty' then pairs some heavily treated vocals with glitchy, glassy sound effects, a rugged and weighty low end and plenty of futuristic and caustic textures. These are dread fuelled bombs designed to be played nice and loud.

Skanx - "Distant Dream 2013"
Review: Some call him R.A.W, some call him Skanx, others call him 6Blocc. Here at Juno we call this LA low-end veteran a 'badman'. Flipping through the tempos like vinyls in a dusty crate and flexing his bass muscles with depth and dexterity on every release, he's renowned for flicking the style switch at the drop of a fractured amen. Declassified Dubplates acts as a cool potted CV with cuts like "Sensi" and "Booming In Your Jeep" show his breakneck full throttle style, cuts like "Babylon Coke" and "Distant Dream 2013" showing his lower nu-jungle skills and cuts like "Viaje Al Mictlan" and "Mexico Tenochtitlan" showcasing his mesmerisingly deep, dubby styles. An accomplished collection to say the least.

Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

Review: Following his soundtrack to the Roki game and appearances on the likes of Monstercat, Aether returns to his spiritual home Fent Plates for the first time since 2017. The wait has of course been worth it as 'Fragments' takes us back to the Scottish deepsmith's finest elements; stirring, poignant chords, foggy, disarming textures long lingering-but-tender notes. From the opening airy pads and trembling keys of 'Luna Awaits' to the final slo-mo plod and echo of the finale 'Worlds Apart', it's Aether doing what he does best; conjuring up emotions you didn't even know you were feeling while making you feel like you're in an impenetrable bubble. Review: Since first dropping on wax five years ago, Aether's Fent Plates debut, Viraha, has become something of an in-demand EP online - hence this timely reissue. We'd argue that it remains the Scottish producer's most potent and musically detailed work, wrapping atmospheric and alluring melodic elements - think twinkling, melancholic piano motifs, manipulated female vocal samples and emotive chords - around the deepest of dubstep beats, head-nodding trip-hop grooves and hazy aural textures. Throw in a couple of fine ambient tracks and you have a brilliantly blissful, contemplative EP that's tailor-made for sofa-bound post-club plays and escapist afternoon daydreaming.

At What Point Do I Stop Trying (4:12)
Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: Numa Crew enigma Ago wishes us nothing but the best right here as we're offered all the drugs and the good luck over a satisfyingly trippy beat. Opener "Good Luck!" is peppered with smoking 808s, creepy arpeggios and more space than Professor Brian Cox's photo album, there's a reason this has been in such demand all summer. "I Got" is just as beguiling. Watch out for those Latin guitars as they wash over the booming kicks. Emotional. Good luck mate.

Review: Fresh from featuring alongside Lapo on Moonshine Recordings, Agostino Isola AKA Ago returns to the Innamind Recordings label he's long called home. It would be fair to say he's in fine form, too, serving up a double-EP of melodious, atmospheric cuts that pepper the deepest of dubstep riddims with a variety of smoky samples, blissful lead lines and becalmed chords. For dancefloor play, the highlight is undoubtedly "So I Smoke", where echoing female vocal snippets bounce above dub bass and punchy drums, though "Deer (Dub)" - a rumbling club revision of included ambient cut "Deer" - is similarly impressive. Highlights elsewhere across the EP include the trip-hop style stoned beats of "Dragon Love" and the wind chimes-sporting bliss of "Above".

Crippling (4:38)
Eight Times Eight (5:39)
Riverwind (4:04)
Review: Coming up on Innamind, Killa Sound and Moonshine Recordings, Ago has been flying the flag for soundsystem innovation in the scene where dubstep still pushes forwards and the connection to traditional dub values remains at the forefront of the practice. It makes perfect sense he's now been snapped up by V.I.V.E.K's System label then and he arrives on the label with four outstanding cuts pushing at typical 140 forms and offering something wholly unique. 'Your Eyes' keeps plenty of space in the half-step rhythm, but the springy synth out front runs with an urgent double time which elevates the impact of the track. 'Crippling' is a more claustrophobic pressure cooker, while 'Eight Times Eight' turns out a leftfield strain of steppas before 'Riverwind's techy propulsion brings the record home in outstanding fashion.

Two sides, two very different vibes; 'Goldfinger' is all about that spacious dubby stalk and prowl. Laced with all manner of trippy textures, it's already been a major missile at Innamind's recent bashes with System. Flip for something more of a post UKG flavour; the rattling upbeat 'Silverware'. Black Ink
Review: Otherwise known as Rob McAndrews, former James Blake collaborator Airhead is fast becoming one of the most interesting producers on the R&S roster since Blake's movement to more mainstream concerns. Taking a more explicitly rhythmic direction than previous release which concentrated on lush acoustic textures, "Pyramid Lake" combines rapidfire percussion, breathy vocal samples and lo-fi VHS textures to create the most unlikely club banger you'll hear this year. "Black Ink" meanwhile sounds like a maelstrom of kickdrums tumbling up and down a rubber staircase with stray hi-hats and handclaps thrown into the mix. Undeniably one of the best R&S cuts this year.

"Might Of The Trinity" is a rootsical bumper with a lavishly warm and bouncing bassline and sparse, splashing cymbals. Review: Amit's AMAR imprint continues its consistent run of fresh 140 form with New Zealand dub-wiser Akcept. Easing us in with crisp keys, we're soon introduced to his spacious sense of groove and lean instrumentation as "Peace Pipe" lurks and lingers before a lavish horn sample hits midway. "The Streets" takes us further down Akcept's melodic rabbit hole as Clinton Sly spits and sermons over a more colourful version of the riddim. "Insight" takes the prize for heaviest dancefloor cut with a bouncing sub line that tramples with abandon beneath a flow of dubby FX and textures. Playful but ultimately deep and dark, these guys aren't mucking around.

Review: New Zealander Akcept is arguably rather representative of his home country's unique approach to bass music, offering up a string of releases for the likes of Modern Hypnosis, Amar and Moonshine that fuse dubstep and UK dub rhythms with audible references to techno and roots music. He's at it again on this superb new single, first combining African percussion, pitched down vocal samples, deep dubstep rhythms, weighty bass and dub effects on A-side club cut "Cambridge Road". He stays closer to experimental dub territory on flipside "Over & Out", where sparse drum hits and metallic dub trails combine with an unashamedly heavy sub-bass motif and Melodica samples to devastating effect.

Unfathomably deep, warm and tailored for fine tuned systems, it's a quintessential lesson in dub science. Meanwhile on the B "Going Round In Circles" flips the coin for something just as dubby but a lot more dancefloor. As teased by many of his mixes, Akcept's penchant for dub techno is just as strong as his love for roots... Something that's more than clear when you hear this record.

Kicking off with dBridge, then Nomine, now the label take us to New Zealand for its third outing as Akcept takes the controls and proceeds to drive on both sides of the road; "Dreader Than Dread" is an epic bounce back 10 years with its brazenly funk horns and rolling chubby bass groove while "Howl" is a lot more spaced out, starker, late night jam with a fatty sub line that should come with a health warning. Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

"Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Those of you who indulged in last summer's inaugural release on the label will need little extra incentive to indulge here, but curious parties new to the label read on. AMIT's knack for productions that are both delicate and dark is in full effect on lead track, where vocals from Rani offer a sense of fragility that's gradually consumed by the sheer bass weight of the production. "Cultivating Axum" is all about the layered, heavily dubbed drum arrangement that builds and folds with mesmerising effect. Flip for "Unbreakable Cages" where the dizzy factor is taken to more spacious places with savage spoken word ricocheting across spring, metallic textures and iced-out processed chimes. X marks the spot.

Stefan Dubs - "Saudrune Dub" (5:28)
Stacktrace - "Heal" (5:49)
Review: Egregore Collective's second outing is another serious one that brings together five specialists from the world of deep dub music. Another Channel opens and plunges into a cavernous oceanic abyss with 'East Slope Dub' before Mantsche's 'Unknown Dub Story' (feat Bishop) has rippling chords that disappear to an infinite horizon while the paddy drums churn slowly below. There's an authentic dub feel to the endlessly wide open spaces of Masis's 'Mount Zio' and the flip brings more dark but delightful dub from Stefan Dubs and Stacktrace.

Lungs
Review: Where to place Weevil Neighbourhood? Is this dub techno? Perhaps. Dubstep? Maybe. Drum and bass? Sometimes. Experimental? Yes: in the truest sense of the word. It draws from all these aforementioned styles and more, resulting in the formation of a reclusive German label breaking the framework of many electronic music genres wide open. The title-track from Anthone's second EP for the label is where the dub techno suggestion comes from thanks to its caustic chord sequences, only there's flashes of dubstep beat designs and loose drum and bass textures similar to what can be heard on Felix K's Flowers Of Destruction. On the flip, "Lungs" is instrumental and live feeling. In parts it sounds like a band playing, while in others you can here the work of samplers looping, and when combined, it offers an industrial soundscape that's like merging some of the darker rock and metal stylings from Sex Tags No Amfibia with Regis' Sandra Electronics project, only reduced to the point of almost being ambient.

Loos In Twos (NRG) (5:25)
Gary Mission (5:03)
Stepper (3:32)
Review: Watch your bass bins, cause ANZ is here to test them out with this blistering new bass drop on Hessle Audio. Continuing in the fine tradition of the UK hardcore continuum, Manchester-based producer ANZ's tracks here all chew up and spit out elements of rave, hardcore, jungle and breaks. "Loos In Twos (NRG)" is the big opening salvo, with rave sirens and tight as you like kick drums. "Gary Mission" then stacks up the jittery drum rhythms and runs through them with tripped out synths that percolate over and over. "Stepper" is just that, with heathy vocal sounds peppering a tough riddim.

DJ support from people as diverse as Ricardo Villalobos. Positive reviews of previous releases have appeared in The Wire, IDJ, Fact magazine and many more.

Review: A very hot prospect in the exciting playing field between the darks arts of bass and traditional singer/songwriting, Arcane is building in the firm foundations set by the likes of Fink, Darkstar, Blake and Frameworks. Less cry-baby than Blake, more bass-fuelled than Framework, each of these five cuts trembles with sentimentality while kicking you in the shin with their ace low end capabilities and stark hooks. Highlights include the garagey vox and fractures of "Safety" and the more full-flavoured church like groans on "Departed".

Review: It's been a while since Archiver launched his I & I Musik label with the "Pusherman" dub but he's back and it's a serious thing. Gravity weighs off every word Ras Tinny spits. A stern story of greed's vicious pyramid laid over some springy kicks and ebbed textures, it's an alluring attack of both thoughts and senses. Alpha Steppa takes it deeper into the dance with a heavy pressure skank on the flip. Highly recommended.

Review: And the winner of the best rhetorical question of the day goes to Are You Gunna Hold It Down? Blatantly we are when the sounds are this heavy. 002 for the label now, once again it's very cheeky white label business, fully anonymous in the credit department and the vibes are set extremely high. "The Woods" is an oil pneumatic machine, the likes of which you'd expect to hear on Osiris while "Stumble" hits on two sides; the ghostly graveyard overtones and that flabby old bassline undertone. Think Distance and you're in the right sonic ballpark.

Review: Kenzo's Artikal rounds up another commanding year with decorated damagers across the 140-160 bass spectrum with a traditional 140 release courtesy of FKOF alumni Argo. "Nooo" is a creeped out stroll through a misty midnight wood, sounds echoing around you, prickling your skin and playing your mind. "Glowz" will turn you inside out as it tears your attention between the stretched and rolled subverted trappy percussion and its soul-smouldering subs. Finally "Stigma" is the actual soundtrack to the moments aliens come down and kidnap you in around 35 years time. Bon voyage.

Review: It's been a while since we last spotted French deepsmith Argo on Encrypted but the timing is perfect for a return as he eases us into 2019 with dreamy allure. Following his "Daredevil" EP on Artikal late last year we're once again enshrouded in somnambulant sonics; "Astro Dub" is all about the twinkled arpeggio while "LNTC" takes a sombre stroll between some tightly weaved 808 hi-hat rolls. "Your Steps" closes with more of a nod to the dancefloor, with its rolling break and warping bassline whipping up a Swamp 83 style technoid edge. Step in time.

Review: Deep dubstep explorations are very much back in fashion of late. LDH is a new label that is tapping into that world and now welcomes Argo for a quartet of emotive new cuts that also do plenty of damage when played nice and loud on the right sound system. 'Desaccord' is a tender one with a pained harmonic lead and jittery beats, 'Gramz' has grime vocals over the crisp, glitchy, tech-y drum work and 'Cortizoid' invites you to sink deep into a wobbly synth and stuttering kicks. 'Transmitted' is a more suspensory sound with ambient cosmic pads that are warm and cuddly.

Iron Oxide
Review: Bristol's champion of full-bodied and immaculately produced dubstep business brings more of his plush melodics to bear on the Halocyan imprint after sterling turns for the likes of Apple Pips. "Addict" is a prime example of his style, fusing crisp, sugarsnap garage drums with thick swathes of synths that dart and parry around each other with grace and skill. Komon steps up on the remix tip with a simple fashioning of the track into a chunky house groove that retains the essence of the original. "23 Summers" takes a more laidback approach to the steppiness, slinging R&B samples around in a delirous and boogie-inflected haze, while "Iron Oxide" plunges into a more rolling breakbeat flavour shot through with a healthy dose of melancholia. Finally, October gets jacking on a remix of "23 Summers" that piles on metallic percussion and bubbling acid in a linear and psyched out fashion that's as much industrial as it is techno.

Review: Even before you hear the first beat, there is something incredibly exit about seeing the names Male - a pioneering beat master and pivotal figure in the early emergence of the dubstep sound - with Joe Armon-Jones, talented musician and master keys man. A Way Back comes on Aquarii, Armon-Jones's own label with him on keys and synths, Mala on drums and bass and Maxwell Owin featuring on 'Oh Lord'. It brings back memories of the golden dubstep years with cavernous bass and heavy weight drums all finished to perfection with Armon-Jones top lines.

Review: Ghent sub scientist ARtroniks continues his rich vein of hypnotic tech dubtep on brand new US imprint Bleak Winter. A game of two singular sides: "Riddle" blurts and flirts with a flabby bassline that ripples with a precision balance of tight control and body-moving funk. "Mantra" flips for a much deeper, contemplative serenade as lilting seabound guitars and tropical aesthetics ebb and flow around a trippy, almost slurring drum arrangement. Unique.

Sacred Moments
Review: Fresh from opening proceedings on the newly relaunched R&S offshoot Apollo, Manchester based producer Synkro adds another notable entry to his growing discography, collaborating with ASC across two sublime electronic arrangements. They may have the Atlantic Ocean between them, but Synkro and his more celebrated collaborator share clear production ideals and this is hopefully the beginning of an intriguing working relationship. Swift yet delicate rhythms and tectonic deep bass form the backdrop to "Borderline" with ASC and Synkro slowly revealing an expansive atmosphere that positively tingles with delight. In contrast, "Sacred Moments" sees the duo in more pensive form, filling every iota of space between the half step thump that drives the track with downwards spirals of glowering yet restrained textures.

Review: Near mythical version of a Plastikman classic from a man who'll remain unnamed, "Ask Yourself" enjoys a rare repress and you'd be wise not to sleep on it. Retaining all the alien isolation and spooked out allure of the original but with rolling drums and a sub powerful enough to heat the whole of Croydon, this remains a matchless piece of remix craft. No questions asked.
