Review: Duploc continue to fly the flag for true-skool dubstep with their digital output and a renewed run of vinyl pressings. Duploc Blaxck Tapes 2.0 originally dropped back in 2022 and the tracks from the likes of Hamdi, Hypho and ENiGMA Dubz were instantly getting picked up by such respected selectors as Youngsta, Sicaria Sound and Riz La Teef. It's not hard to see why, given the label's declared focus on "the heavier dubstep sound" with incendiary results. If you want to test some subs with the gnarliest 140 gear around, this record is all you need.

Review: From Croatia to 'Koto', 207 takes us on another captivating instrumental adventure. The title track is an intricate weave of drums and tightly plucked eastern strings that builds on every 32. It's in good company as 'Mrtav' lives up to its name and leaves us all dead under its weighty subs and orchestrated tension, 'Clochard' is a woozy, soulful lament while 'Ziv' brings the EP to a physical halt with springy beats, techno-like humanised stabs and a sticky web of elements and flavours. 207 on a full 360 right here.

Review: High pressure manoeuvres from Ilian Tapes on this mysterious and highly limited one-off run. 'Pulse' is a Samurai style slab of hybrid dub techno that's layered in grains and textures whole 'Procedure' flips the UK garage two-step vibe into a distorted, crunchy and physical groove that's not dissimilar to Tim Wright's early work on Mute. Once again, a very special release from Ilian... Blink and you'll miss it.

Review: Portugal's 3WA is next up on the long running UK label Boka on a special, limited edition 10" vinyl with a unique metallic sticker design. This outing follows big tunes for 3WA on the likes of Crucial Recordings, Foundation Audio and Earth & Stone and serve sup more big bass drops and heavy rhythms. 'Sea Witch' is a cavernous tune with shards of lighting beaming down through it from above as flute leads hypnotise and the drums tumble ever further down below. 'Whale' then stutters on wobbly bass with watery chords up top adding to the sense of space.

Review: 3WA returns to Foundation Audio with a monsters stepper that will loosen your bowels thanks to its serious low end wobble. The opener is the chief example of that with its stuttering kicks and prickly hits all underpinned by a warm, wubbing undercurrent of lovely bass. 'Old Mount' has another bottomlessly deep low end and lithe, shiny synths bring to mind an urban metropolis late at night and 'Bloody Mess' then cuts loose muffled vocals and slapping hits overlaid with manic melodies straight from an early computer game soundtrack. Closer 'Worms' slows things down to a predatory crawl.

Review: Foundation Audio team up two heavy hitters for this ode to heavy sound system music as a way of marking the label's 100th release. This limited edition hand-stamped 10" kicks off with the booming bass and snappy hits of 'Bumba' with its snaking leads and low end wub-wub recalling classic era dubstep. 'Poverty' then pairs some heavily treated vocals with glitchy, glassy sound effects, a rugged and weighty low end and plenty of futuristic and caustic textures. These are dread fuelled bombs designed to be played nice and loud.

Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: Scottish artist Aether emerges from the ether with some of his most spell-binding material to date. Twinkling, evocative and hazy, there's a dreamlike theme as the narrative runs throughout and we're taken down lullaby lane with woozy and wondrous results. From the startling sunrise soul of the first encounter to the poignant, lingering final goodbye, Aether's sonic imagery and consistency makes this more of a mini album than an EP. Utterly beautiful.

Review: Following his soundtrack to the Roki game and appearances on the likes of Monstercat, Aether returns to his spiritual home Fent Plates for the first time since 2017. The wait has of course been worth it as 'Fragments' takes us back to the Scottish deepsmith's finest elements; stirring, poignant chords, foggy, disarming textures long lingering-but-tender notes. From the opening airy pads and trembling keys of 'Luna Awaits' to the final slo-mo plod and echo of the finale 'Worlds Apart', it's Aether doing what he does best; conjuring up emotions you didn't even know you were feeling while making you feel like you're in an impenetrable bubble. Beautiful.

Review: Numa Crew enigma Ago wishes us nothing but the best right here as we're offered all the drugs and the good luck over a satisfyingly trippy beat. Opener "Good Luck!" is peppered with smoking 808s, creepy arpeggios and more space than Professor Brian Cox's photo album, there's a reason this has been in such demand all summer. "I Got" is just as beguiling. Watch out for those Latin guitars as they wash over the booming kicks. Emotional. Good luck mate.

Review: Coming up on Innamind, Killa Sound and Moonshine Recordings, Ago has been flying the flag for soundsystem innovation in the scene where dubstep still pushes forwards and the connection to traditional dub values remains at the forefront of the practice. It makes perfect sense he's now been snapped up by V.I.V.E.K's System label then and he arrives on the label with four outstanding cuts pushing at typical 140 forms and offering something wholly unique. 'Your Eyes' keeps plenty of space in the half-step rhythm, but the springy synth out front runs with an urgent double time which elevates the impact of the track. 'Crippling' is a more claustrophobic pressure cooker, while 'Eight Times Eight' turns out a leftfield strain of steppas before 'Riverwind's techy propulsion brings the record home in outstanding fashion.

Two sides, two very different vibes; 'Goldfinger' is all about that spacious dubby stalk and prowl. Review: New Zealander Akcept is arguably rather representative of his home country's unique approach to bass music, offering up a string of releases for the likes of Modern Hypnosis, Amar and Moonshine that fuse dubstep and UK dub rhythms with audible references to techno and roots music. He's at it again on this superb new single, first combining African percussion, pitched down vocal samples, deep dubstep rhythms, weighty bass and dub effects on A-side club cut "Cambridge Road". He stays closer to experimental dub territory on flipside "Over & Out", where sparse drum hits and metallic dub trails combine with an unashamedly heavy sub-bass motif and Melodica samples to devastating effect.

Review: New Zealand-based producer and DJ Akcept smashes onto Juan Forte with a huge limited release. Limited to 900, this double single features some crazy deep dubstep and techno vibes throughout. 'Deflecting' is a more deconstructed and tribal sound, much more contemplative and brooding than its bubbly techno counterpart 'Always Bittersweet' - it's very much a day/night situation housed in a really dope looking art sleeve based on comic strip aesthetics.

Review: It's been a while since Archiver launched his I & I Musik label with the "Pusherman" dub but he's back and it's a serious thing. Gravity weighs off every word Ras Tinny spits. A stern story of greed's vicious pyramid laid over some springy kicks and ebbed textures, it's an alluring attack of both thoughts and senses. Alpha Steppa takes it deeper into the dance with a heavy pressure skank on the flip. Highly recommended.

Review: And the winner of the best rhetorical question of the day goes to Are You Gunna Hold It Down? Blatantly we are when the sounds are this heavy. 002 for the label now, once again it's very cheeky white label business, fully anonymous in the credit department and the vibes are set extremely high. "The Woods" is an oil pneumatic machine, the likes of which you'd expect to hear on Osiris while "Stumble" hits on two sides; the ghostly graveyard overtones and that flabby old bassline undertone. Think Distance and you're in the right sonic ballpark.

Review: Ilian Tape have been sympathetic to the sound of UK bass for some time now, but this new drop from Atrice leans even further into the pervading energy of dubstep as a source of club pressure. The Swiss duo first appeared on Ilian Tape with Q back in 2021, and they're sounding stronger than ever on this latest missive. If 'Multiplex' brings a cybernetic sheen to headsy 140, then 'Is It Warm' does similar work with techy d&b as the pair dice up breakbeats with precision and drape exquisite, shimmering pads over the ruffness. There's also space for crafty techno propulsion on 'Broke' and high-tempo trippiness on '83 Steps', making this a versatile, consistently brilliant release from a rising force in the scene.

Review: Four big, booming , bass heavy tracks from Swiss production and DJ duo Atrice that stand astride several genre definitions from dubstep to techno and electro. The pair pride themselves on their sound design and it certainly lends a subtle but perceptible air to the hair raising frequencies flying around on the likes of 'Backrooms' and 'Pipe Dreams', the two most obvious contenders for the dubstep tag. 'Chamber Of Mazarbul' and the more electronica-slanted 'Nulspace' are less conventional - at least by general standards if not the wonderfully wayward 'rules' of the eternally renegade Ilian Tape label - but equally thunderous and well executed.

Review: After some great releases on Heavy Traffic, Boka Records and Daku, Andrew Howard, better known as AxH, is back with a new one for the ever reliable Artikal Music. Stomping, yet remarkably deep and meditative, 'Monkey Brainz' will hypnotise you into submission with its blunted style of sonar transmissions. Over on the flip, things get much nastier and even abrasive on the pitch black dubstep transgressions of 'Boxknife Chrome' which will leave you feeling like you smoked synthetic cannabinoids.

Review: Stateside representing! AxH finally unleashes three secret weapons from his sets on LoDubs. Each one tickling a completely different side of the game and brain, 'Dream Creatures' kicks off like a bulldozer as a multi-layered bassline ploughs into the dance on a Distance style level of heaviness with absolutely no apologies. 'Shade' flips things into the future with some mind-bending drum arrangements and rhythm switches while 'Spy Vs Spy' is total tribal tension, all half time espionage and atmospheric creepiness. Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

Review: Bandulu strike again! This time with fellow kindred system spirit Bengal Sound. Two more totally disarming, otherworldly experiments, if you've just returned from Outlook then you'll already know what damage these are causing. "Never Mind" warms up with graveyard stroll before opening up into a strange shimmering organ riff that doesn't quite sound as if it's made on this planet. "Short Stay" meanwhile twists up the percussion and drum arrangements, making them almost breathe with trippy toxicity and a wooziness you just can't find in any other style of music. One of a kind and already teased out a few months ago. This new batch won't last long.
