Fear (SP:MC remix) (5:34)
Review: Fresh from tidy 2019 EPs on Sector 7 Sounds and System Music, Drone returns to the latter label with his first missive of 2020. There's plenty of highlights stretched across the EP's two slabs of wax, with our favourites including the creepy mix of deep dubstep rhythms and Autechre style melodies that is "20 K", the slow-burn headiness of "Flooded" - where picturesque watery melodies ride a skeletal beat and vibrating sub-bass - and the aggressive late night dancefloor paranoia of "Fear". SP:MC provides a tasty rework of that cut, focusing the action on a crunchier rhythm track and pulverising waves of distorted analogue bass.

Review: There's not a lot of info about Scott Gailey Spring's first album as Hotspring, though Mood Hut's description of it being, 'digital technology half buried in the soil', is rather good. Throughout, Gailey employs a brilliantly inventive, off-kilter mixture of tipsy, off-kilter drumbeats, distant auto-tuned vocalizations, manipulated new age music sounds, pulsing ambient chords, fluttering electronic motifs and knowing nods to future R&B. It's extremely hard to accurately describe, but both brilliantly beautiful and undeniably eccentric: the kind of album that will have you scratching your head and smiling enthusiastically at the same time. If you don't believe us, we'd suggest checking out the clips ASAP.

Review: Taken from their humungous 45 track compilation, this special six-track triple vinyl pack highlights the creative range for Dub Police's repertoire. Celebrating almost a decade in the game, the label has lead from the front since day one, nurturing some the scene's most exciting creative artists. Here we're treated to the widest range; from The Others & Emalkay's snarling saw tooth sizzle 2012 "Fallout" to L-Wiz's stunning smoky jazz stepper "Girl From Codeine City" via oceanic depths of the brand new and exclusive "SC Connection" from Matty G & J:Kenzo, every corner of the ever-expanding bass universe is repped with slickness and style. Arresting stuff.

Review: Farful & Mtwn made a big oppression with their first EP Collisions. Now they follow it up on a mission to "explore the use of modular synths, and also hardware, in more depth." As such the pair set up their gear and set to work, crafted hours of jams and passing them back and forth between their bases in Liege and London, then polishing them up into he tunes we have presented here. It makes fora record filled with club energy, but experimental edge, and goes from half time steppers to make you sweat to slower, more seductive passages of last night, bass driven sound.

Flo - "Unstable" (3:31)
Flo & Gisaza - "Monolith" (4:26)
Review: Finally. More presses of the killer 002 from Run Outs land and it's every bit as chilling as it was when they first teased us with it. "Unstable" is a meditative shimmering brew, unhurried and pace-setting while "Monolith" flips the vibe for something a little more warped and weird. Linking with mysterious producer Gisaza, they add a grumbling bassline, creepy arpeggios and sudden switches under a hazy cosmic sheen. Powerful stuff. You'd be wise to snap up on this before they Run Out again (not sorry).

Review: From the eastern sorcerer who gave us 'Dying On Acid' a few years ago on Deep Medi comes 'Pusher Acid', one of the most beguiling EPs Gantz has cast our way in some time. Six tracks over two 12"s, there's a real measured pace and sense of tension running across the collection as we gradually build up to the pensive, fierce and well-chiselled title track. Elsewhere we have the eerie cinematica of 'Sleepless Elite', the left-footed lollops and slug-like bassline of 'Chiral' and the palpitating, slo-mo seduction of the vinyl-only cut 'Spineless'. Keep pushing on.

Review: Putting the Head into Headland, New Zealand beat conjurer Gene Warriner gets his cosmic thing on for this superb System release. Each track laden with weight and hypnotic charm, 'Dogtooth' sets the scene and lures into the mist with its slow and sludgy diversions. It's followed by a whole stack next level sorcery; 'Roamer' is a disarming creeper from another dimension, 'Industry' was actually made out of your dreams while 'Sour' was made out of your nightmares. Finally Epoch goes bananas on the remix as he takes Headland's last single 'Garbo' and takes it to some very strange places. System smash it once again.

Review: Question: Can Headland do anything wrong right now? Answer: Absolutely not. Just listen to "Tasty Witch" (if you've not already heard it from the big guns at the likes of Outlook) and you'll agree. Big organs. Strange funk. Powerful positivity. And that's just the lead track. Elsewhere we're hypnotised by the purring subs on "Bedrock", we dive headfirst in low end treacle on "Idle" and get beautifully wavey on "Tweak". Double 12", double the fun; both Headland and System are in such fine fettle it's staggering.

Review: The second chapter of Sentry's compilation series furthers the notoriety of its lauded artist congregation, welcoming plenty of fresh faces to the revered artist roster. A four-track vinyl sampler, Syndicate Part 2 takes (as the label best said themselves) 'bass music enthusiasts for an extensive and stylistically varied ride'. KALI & Senncoria take dubstep into world music realms on 'Dragon Shape', LSN bring UK bass music forward on the urban grit of 'Shotta Kush', Substance teams up with label head honcho Youngsta on the blunted late night grime experiment 'Nug', and on what was probably our favourite track on here, Cimm presents a unique take on dub techno with the cavernous and glacial 'Glider'.

Morning Glow Dub (4:03)
Review: It's been a while since the last solo missive from Finland's premier dubstep producer - three years in fact - so this expansive double-pack on Innamind Recordings is undoubtedly well overdue. He begins via the skittish beats, deep sub-bass and expansive, deep space electronics of "Flo", before bouncing between the pummelling analogue bass and trippy layered vocal samples of "Trippin" and the deeper, echo and reverb-laden deep dubstep shuffle of "Float". Over on record two, "Swamp Dub" is a quietly positive chunk of liquid dubstep warmth; "Tarrot" is a slow, steady and insanely weighty chunk of future dub; and "Morning Glory Dub" is one of the finest chunks of ambient dub we've heard in 2020. Impressive stuff!

Review: dBridge's mighty Exit Records get a superb mini-album out of Leftlow here. It's a collection of tunes that provoke great thought as the London pair offer up their most comprehensive oeuvre yet. These are headphone-ready sounds with meaty low ends and superb sound designs that are fluid, intricate, and underpinned by the sort of bass that will also work so well on a meaty sound system. Atmospheric and inventive throughout, there is an industrial tinge to 'Pistons' while dreamier scapes define 'Thoughtful' and lovely drum patterns get you on your toes during 'Green Eyes'. Irresistible stuff to any bass heads.

Review: Swiss label Dub Colony Music Switzerland looks across Europe to Mob Killa from The Netherlands for this fourth release after fine early entries from Sentient and TCP. '70 Degrees' opens up with a sense of late night mystery and urban loneliness. 'Kill A Boo' brings some gentle piano tinkles over earth-shattering bass that has you lurching from one foot to the other. There is more duality to 'The Mansion' which has a hypotonic lead flute up top and more weighty bass down low. 'Elitist' shuts down with a further mix of elegant and heady melody and more physical drums.

Review: 1985 don Perez gets back on the 140 ruffage and once again it's carnage. Swaggering, moody and unlike anything anyone else is doing, each cut bites with grilled menace. "Ravana" is all about the slow motion chainsaw harmonics, "Lifeline" is just raw subby hench stenchism, "Post-Mortem" stings with much more of a trippier, waspy edge before "Ends" finishes the business with a series of subverted rave and techno elements with Headland. Impeccable as always.

A fitting title for a dreamy vibe, it's backed up by a wide range of gems... Benga - "I Come From London"
SBTRKT - "Sleep In Tokyo"
Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

Smouldering, swaggering and spacious deep 140 dynamics to completely lose yourself inside. Rinsing and flexing TMSV's turbo breaks of 'Abyss Watcher', we're hammered with thumper after thumper; the ice cold snake-like breaks and tension of THUGWIDOW's 'You See How It Spreads Out Like A Fungus', Drumterror & B:Thorough's swampy 140 swagger on the 'Abyss' remix and Samurai Breaks' stampy, pulsating 'Marathon' are all key highlights. Review: Released just months ahead of the moment he stepped away from the music industry indefinitely in summer 2020, Bassnectar's All Colors album enjoys a surprising vinyl release. Sonically the album sees him re-exploring his hip-hop and west coast breaks roots with all manner of big swaggering grooves and sludgy basslines (see 'Rewind The Track' and 'Off The Grid') Elsewhere firing moments of EDM hype flare up throughout ('Uebok Gotta Run') and there's even time for a little fast lane D&B action ('Nice & Easy') Other highlights include the 8-bit euphoric likes of 'Rise & Shine' and the finale 'Optimism'. A colourful trip.

James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival via his own (major label funded) Atlas imprint ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: Seven years have passed since Burial first stopped us dead in our tracks with this universally acclaimed second album.. Sounding so different, so removed and far away from anything else, it changed the game entirely - and created a whole school of imitators in its wake. Now repressed by Hyperdub, this is a rare opportunity to grab it on fresh wax. Even if you have this on other formats in your collection, the dusty weight and chasmic crackles sound so much better on vinyl.

Review: Under the Calibre alias, Dom Martin has never been afraid to supplement his main drum & bass work with tracks that explore different musical styles. He's gone one step further on this album for Craig Richards' label, the Nothing Special. Stripped of all jungle intent, Grow impressively shuffles between jazzy future garage, hazy post-dubstep soundscapes, warm, breakbeat-driven grooves (the early Blu Mar Ten style bliss of "Thunder Fog"), throbbing futurist dub (the brilliant "Over The Top"), and, perhaps most surprisingly for those keen on D&B, four-to-the-floor deep house (the clandestine "Mention"). The fact that it's all rather good confirms what many in D&B already knew: that Martin is a hugely talented producer.

Review: St Albans-based Daniel Richmond has quietly built a solid reputation as a purveyor of woozy, atmospheric dubstep via a series of quality full-lengths. In the past, he's been compared to Burial, though Richmond's music and rhythms lack the paranoid, panic-stricken intensity associated with dubstep's self-styled man of mystery. There are some similarities, though, not least a love of subtle melodies, quietly upbeat compositions and wrong speed vocal cut-ups. This third album is arguably Richmond's most confident and swaggering, a typically robust set that fixes floor-friendly rhythms to his usual dreamy soundscapes.
