Cat: RAREFIEDREMIX 1. Rel: 24 Sep 19
  1. TAR - "Amplivagant" (J Sparrow remix) (5:25)
  2. Primer - "Signals" (Crypticz remix) (4:33)
Review: It's the release that recently moved Skream to tweet he'll make 140 music again, Rarefied dig deep back over the vaults for their first remix release. First up is the Skream co-signed remix of T. A. R.'s "Amplivagant" in which Navy Cut captain J.Sparrow flips the bassline into a steamroller of a mix where the groove has a technoid mind of its own and the demolished results speak for themselves. Flip for Crypticz twist on Primer's "Signals". Switching out the skittering two-steps for ghostly amen echoes while keeping the tone and vibe just as eerie and haunted, it's another remarkable remix. Absolute solid gold.

  1. Arrival (3:17)
  2. Barcode (5:01)
  3. Missing Amsterdam (2:55)
  4. Tasteful (feat Rygby) (3:46)
Review: Chonk Mob familia Koma joins the gang at White Peach with this far-out four-piece that showcases his broadest and most considered range. "Arrival" sets the scene with big cinematic pads, arpeggiated pipes and a mood that gets deeper and darker the more you stride into it. "Missing Amsterdam", meanwhile, shows a calmer Koma as we mooch to poignant chimes in the most contemplative way. Finally, the bashy steel drum twister "Tasteful" plays the consummate pudding course as Koma and fellow Chonkster Rygby serve up the final course of this exceptional feast. Koma back soon.

Bobby (hand-stamped 10")
Cat: FAVX 003. Rel: 08 Oct 19
  1. Bobby (4:15)
  2. I Wonder Why (3:46)
Review: Sheesh! And the award for the swampiest, most mutated and wooziest 140 jam of recent times goes to Sibla & Teffa's "Bobby". Presented here on the a; proper sleazy, rolling, oily cosmic dub funk - with some fantastic vocal stamps from the master - it's quite remarkable for the pair's first ever collaboration. As is 'I Wonder Why' on the B. Taking a slightly more traditional dub route, here they dig deep into the roots and really get involved in the sounds and elements, gradually easing us deeper and deeper into the blend before we realise we're cap-deep in a pretty heady psychedelic stew... And we have no plans to swim to shore. Limited to 300, this won't hang around.

  1. The Eyes (5:07)
  2. Lurkin (4:40)
  3. ET (4:49)
  4. Left Behind (5:06)
Review: It's been a long time since the dank and dirty one last appeared on DUPLOC. 2015 to be precise. During that time DUPLOC have gone from strength to strength as a platform and Enigma Dubz has honed his sound to incredible levels. Warm, wet, trippy and loaded with a funk that seems to come out from nowhere, his signature and style is here in all its glory across four tracks. Highlights include the spooked-out desert charm of "ET" and the classic samples and barrelling sub swagger of "Lurkin". Don't take our word for it, the whole EP needs your attention.

Cat: BTG 006. Rel: 13 Aug 19
  1. Embers (5:48)

  3. No Gravity (7:17)
  4. Embers (Danny Scrilla remix) (6:18)
  5. The Awakening (Etch remix) (6:57)
Review: Having appeared on the likes of Nous Disques, Dream Eater and Collection Artaud, it was only a matter of time before London beat splicer J-Shadow's glacial, unnerving textures and sounds would find a home on Bun The Grid. With strong senses of techno and electro deep in the low-end mix, highlights include the nutty, almost breakcore style flippery of "No Gravity" the powerful technoid dirge of the title track "Embers". Loaded with remixes from none other than Etch and Danny Scrilla, once again BTG have spoilt us rotten.

FKD (hand-numbered 12" limited to 295 copies)
Cat: WRDUBS 07. Rel: 24 Sep 19
  1. Chad Dubz - "FKD" (4:54)
  2. JFO - "Destroyer Of Worlds" (5:35)
Review: For the seventh salvo on Well Rounded Records' "Well Rounded Dubs" series, the hard-working Brighton crew has secured tracks from two hard-working and well-regarded producers. Bristol based Chad Dubz handles side A, reaching for the weirdo effects, psychedelic electronics, sub-heavy bass and head-nodding beats on bleeping post-dub head-nodder "FKD" (think Mad Professor after overdosing on LSD and you're close). Over on side B Manchester's JFO takes over and treats us to a particularly deep dubstep excursion where creepy effects, ricocheting percussion sounds and horror style spoken word samples cluster around crunchy beats and a suitably sustained sub-bass motif.

Jansky (12")
Cat: ENV 022. Rel: 03 Sep 19
  1. Jansky (3:44)
  2. Twinkle Toez (3:16)
  3. Deadliest Force (4:42)
Review: Chonkster Rygby comes correct once again on one of his earliest stomping grounds, Encrypted. Opener "Jansky" doesn't so much as make you swoon but will have you swiping right all night long with its emotional chords and affable off-side bass bubbles. "Twinkle Toez", however, isn't quite the lover's lullaby. Creepy Halloween feels a-go-go, this explores a much darker side of Rygby's bounce athletics. "Deadliest Force" closes us off on more of a grime instrumental vibe but with a wry filmic edge. Emotions remain high. As they always do with this Bristol basssmith.

  3. Rapture 4D - "Skylab" (4:34)
  4. Rapture 4D - "Kosmos Redshift" (4:39)
Review: Scrub A Dub dub, two men in a tub. They're called Rapture 4D and newcomer Ruda and they're making some pretty stinking noises. "Hubble Flow Dub" transmits messages to the furthest corners of the cosmic over a rumpy-pumpy bass riff while "Left Hand Path" celebrates all the southpaws of the land with an eerie theramin-led bleep mosaic. Flip for two Rapture originals as "Skylab" takes us right down under the earth's crust with its swampy, gloopy flow and textures and "Kosmos Redshift" closes us on a freaky space jazz trip. Scrub's up!

Never Mind (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: BANDULU 012. Rel: 09 Sep 19
  1. Never Mind (4:19)
  2. Short Stay (4:13)
Review: Bandulu strike again! This time with fellow kindred system spirit Bengal Sound. Two more totally disarming, otherworldly experiments, if you've just returned from Outlook then you'll already know what damage these are causing. "Never Mind" warms up with graveyard stroll before opening up into a strange shimmering organ riff that doesn't quite sound as if it's made on this planet. "Short Stay" meanwhile twists up the percussion and drum arrangements, making them almost breathe with trippy toxicity and a wooziness you just can't find in any other style of music. One of a kind and already teased out a few months ago. This new batch won't last long.

  3. Gone For Never (with Axh) (5:33)
  4. Rubberhands (5:00)
Review: Deep mischief from the Bangor triad LSN. Their first EP since December 2018, it's an instant hit of low end refreshment that stretches the full terrain. On the A: "I Don't Know What That Means" is a deeply trippy workout that turns the spoken word samples inside out while "Oscillator" flips for a raw vocal cut that swaggers and smoulders in equal measure. Meanwhile on the B: "Gone For Never" is a stern jam sprung with a tightly coiled buzzing riff and "Rubberhands" brings every bit as much funk as its name implies. Squelchy.

Cat: FAV 013. Rel: 08 Oct 19
  1. Rotation (4:50)
  2. Sick As A Dog (6:27)
  3. Tumble Dub (4:40)
Review: Heavy rotation: Belgium badman Zygos returns to Foundation Audio with a full range of sounds. Three tracks, three vibes: opener "Rotation" is just as much of a techno jam as it is a dubstep track, all rolling motion and layers of percussion, "Sick As A Dog" brings the graveyard ghetto vibes, all spooky pads, groaning bass and rattlesnake snare rolls while "Tumble Dub" closes business on much more of a traditional halftime swagger vibe but with a mechanical hook that lives up to its name. Loopy business. Zygos always smashes it.

Speak Out (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SUBALT 021. Rel: 20 Aug 19
  1. Speak Out (feat Rider Shafique) (5:34)
  2. Koroga (5:07)
  3. Zee (4:40)
Review: Following cuts on Gourmet and Trusik, Osaka's City1 makes his debut on Subaltern with three more reasons to keep him radar-locked. Hurling us into the mix with no warning, "Speak Out" takes the lead with Japanese steel licks and fire tongue truths from Rider Shafique before "Koroga" oozes its way in pursuit. All wet and wobbly, it's 2007 all over again but with a wily sense of direction that never sits still. "Zee" closes the EP in true pranged-out fashion. Off-key, warped and a grumpy bassline that harrumphs for days, if you need any more reasons to keep tabs on City1 just lift the needle and play again.

  1. Suggestive Effect (4:43)
  2. Insecure (6:57)
  3. Iron Box (5:35)
Review: Uncompromised 140 magic right here as Tokyo's Helktram returns with their first full single in over two years. This time coming on Trusik, each cut flexes into a different dimension. Opening track "Suggestive Effect" hits like a pneumatic techno drill, marching militantly into your cortex with its staccato drill. "Insecure" plays the consummate foil with its glacial textures and weeping, woozy chords while "Iron Box" brings things together with a classic Coki-style pinched wobble driving the groove both back and forth in time.

Surface Tension (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SUBTLE 002. Rel: 17 Sep 19
  1. Surface Tension (4:47)
  2. Bokkei (4:39)
Review: After launching with a Headland release last year, Subtle stride forth with another exciting talent from New Zealand for your radar: Ebb. "Surface Tension" is an absolute steam roller of a jam with the bassline unfolding its flabs over and over until you're covered in slimy low-end fat. "Bokkei" raises the prang stakes a little with minor key strikes and a more aggressive rolling bassline that doesn't so much as unfold but KO punch its way through the mix. Subtle? Sublime more like.

  1. Winona (3:18)
  2. Worms (3:03)
  3. King Kan (3:35)
  4. Snakes Egos (4:12)
Review: These are tracks designed to rattle ribs and loosen the foundations of any building. They mark another step up for the esteemed bass talents of Samba after releases on the likes of System and Encrypted. "Winona" has a floaty light flute and devastating drums that makes for a nice juxtaposition. "Worms" is darker and more writhing with industrial sound designs and prowling beats, while "King Kan" is a wobbling, shimmering bit of bass gold. "Snakes. Egos" is creepy and unsettling thanks to the freaky synth motifs and closes out a well formed EP.

  1. Young Skeleton (4:13)
  2. Coroners (3:23)
Review: Fresh in the chem trails of his Bandulu release, the inimitable Bengal Sound crash lands back into our psyches with his disarming, not-of-this-world take on 140 music. "Young Skeleton" arrives just in time for Halloween, scaring the dickens out of us with its warped humanised tones, dusty atmospheres and distant chimes. "Coroners" takes us from the graveyard to the morgue... But with these hazy arpeggiated trinkles and eerie shimmers are we stepping towards the light or simply waking up? That's for you to work out.

Zeroes EP (12")
Cat: ARTKL 044. Rel: 03 Sep 19
  1. Zeroes (6:02)
  2. Baro (4:27)
  3. Pistola (5:35)
Review: Destination San Francisco: Artikal snap-up Saule for his debut EP release. Long-time selector but an emerging producer, he's pushing all the right buttons here. Opener "Zeroes" is all flabby moving subs and shimmering theremin harmonics, "Baro" hits with more of an industrial twang in the percussive textures without losing any sense of warmth, trippiness or weirdness (watch out for the danked-out breakdown, though). The final shots are fired on "Pistola" as things take an even stranger turn; tones melt, drums turn into pistons and the sub wobble is off the chain. From "Zeroes" to heroes - this one is a keeper.

  14. Crypticz - "Chrysalis" (feat Amy Kisnorbo) (11:23)
Review: Om Unit takes it to the bridge once again. His label's first V/A collection since its evergreen "Cosmology Selections" in 2017, it's another vast plain ripe in sonic depths and textures from some of the most left-minded, boundary-fusing captains in the bass game. Featuring two crucial link-ups from the bossman himself with two kindred spirits Djrum and Synkro plus a whole cosmic cornucopia of voyages from the likes of Danny Scrilla, J:Kenzo, Vromm and stacks more, every track is a highlight in its own beguiling way. No label flares with the same level of dark vitality, there's more than enough for our brains to chew on right here.
