  1. Back In The Box (4:13)
  2. Herbie (3:18)
  3. In My Head (3:12)
  4. Perfunktion (5:35)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Boofy landed on Pinch's Tectonic. Both Bristol. Both magnetised to the fringes. Both responsible for untold low end hurters like these... "Back In The Box" is a heavy pressure cut with pneumatic kicks and ominous stretched brass textures while "Herbie" is a highly strung piece that's stripped back to just drums, subs and an eerie faltering lead and builds and twists when you least expect it. Flip for the churchy chords and rattled percussion of "In My Head" before "Perfunktion" closes with jazzier chords and a stone cold steppy kick arrangement. Classic Boofs.

Razor/Predators (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HILEVRECS 001. Rel: 15 Oct 18
  1. Razor
  2. Predators
Review: Bristol-based badman Borai has been quietly issuing some of the city's most immense club wreckers for many years now, sometimes in partnership with October, and sometimes flying solo (as on the crucial Anybody From London for Hotline Recordings). Here he's inaugurating Higher Level with some absolute dance slayers, kicking off with the mammoth pitched-down drum funk and gut-wrenching bass of "Razor" before switching stance for the dreamier but no less rowdy "Predators." Both cuts are a masterclass in classic breakbeat science, delivering the foundational UK sound with panache that sets these weapons far apart from the rest of the pack.

Cat: ZEN 10353. Rel: 08 Aug 13
  1. Freakshow (feat Danny Brown & Kiki Hitomi)
  2. Louder (feat Flowdan)
  3. Dirty (feat Flowdan)
  4. Kill Them (feat Daddy Freddy)
Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

  1. Wisdom (5:48)
  2. Stuck In The Loop (4:43)
  3. Stuck In The Loop (Hebbe remix) (4:39)
Review: Gnischrew's label hits its third outing with Bristol's Chad Dubz. Maintaining the meditative theme from previous Sub Audio outings, Dubz opens with "Wisdom" wherein a whole barrel of space funk is ripped open and the skanks are so textured you feel you get lost inside them. "Stuck In The Loop" plays the consummate foil as the Bristol producer takes us on a much more paranoid, tunnelling trip. And if that's not enough, man of the moment Hebbe provides a killer remix for good measure. Be wise.

  1. Chad Dubz - "Pricks" (3:47)
  2. Karnage & Dayzero - "No One" (3:45)
  3. Guesswerk - "Persian Dub" (4:55)
Review: The cavendish crusaders are at it again. And this time they're rolling out the barrels with full V/A power. Chad Dubz opens with the provocatively titled "Pricks", all sludgy, swampy and twisted while Karnage & Dayzero up the energy with a dramatic symphonic loopy nod to the far east on "No One" while Guesswerk close the show with the long awaited "Persian Dub". On dub for a good couple of years, this gravel throated swinger has been doing the business for a select amount of DJs for some time. Now it's finally yours. From Bristol with fruit. Tuck in and be quick about it.

Review: Following last year's "Contours", Nottingham duo Congi return to Fent Plates with more raw emotion. Once again with another five track feast that reflects their deepest, widest range to date. Across the EP we're immersed in tangible textures and feelings ranging from the cinematic piano laced two step of the title track to sludgy lofi hip hop of "Too Much" by way of the outer planetary R&B of the finale "Like The Seasons". Genuinely beguiling.

Review: Dubkasm's digi-dub roots dig deep into the early 90s. Boosted into the future by fellow Bristolians Pinch, Appleblim and Headhunter, here we find them declaring "Victory" with this instantly show-stopping horn-heavy skanker. Laced with space and complete with myriad versions, a fine balance of meditative bass and mind-blowing sonic creativity is at play throughout. Those with a penchant for the abyss-levels of dub science should jump straight on "Verse IV". Hear that stretched horn sound and you'll soon understand why it's been sub-titled "Raw Piece". Decolonize (12")
Cat: SEN 006. Rel: 31 Jul 18
  1. Decolonize (4:36)
  2. Global (6:30)
Review: Croatia's Ognjen Zecevic, otherise known as Egoless, has been absolutely smashing over the last three years, with releases for imprints like ZamZam Records and Deep Medi Music instilling his sound at the top of the contemporary bass game. To that point, here he is on Youngsta's Sentry Records, home to producers like dBridge, Caspa and Gramz - so you know the quality is on point. The title tune "Decolonize" is an Eastern riddim, mashing up tough dub-steps with flutes and chimes from the Levant; "Global" keeps that narrative going with some Middle-Eastern melodies blended up and filtered-down into a heady, percussive groove for the ultimate mood-switcher.

Review: Epoch returns! And he's packing some of his rarest steez since "Soundboy Abduction". All air raid sirens, trippy widescreen basses and a scientific spoken word all comprise to form a brutal wall of sound slo-mo drama on "V1" while "Roacher" bubbles with a technoid sense of playfulness and unpredictability. Finally "Rib Cage" takes the surreal sensations to even higher levels with a melting intro, nagging hi-end percussion and the strangest harmonic strings ever to grace an Innamind release. Truly singular.

Joken (10")
Cat: CRUCIAL 019. Rel: 26 Oct 18
  1. Joken (4:04)
  2. Get Them Bags (4:27)
Review: Sleeper man Alex Fox debuted the GRAMZ alias earlier in the year via a two-track 12" on Sentry Records built around paranoid sonic textures, serious bass-weight and rolling 140 BPM beats. For this 10" outing on Crucial, Fox has taken a deeper approach, ratcheting up the smoky atmosphere while retaining sizeable low-end pressure. "Joken" and flipside "Get Them Bags" are hazy, ultra-deep dubstep workouts, with both doffing a cap towards hip-hop and grime (check out the manipulated MC vocal samples on the latter, in particular), as well as the crackling sonic textures of Burial. "Joken" rolls along nicely while remaining pleasingly subdued, while "Get Them Bags" has a little more sonic strut. Both, though, are excellent.

  1. Dip Dip Potato Chip (4:07)
  2. Illa (3:28)
Review: Recovering from the damage caused by Caspa's "Gutter Riddim" earlier this year, Youngsta's Sentry returns with a rightfully-hyped newcomer Gramz. Following a strong range of flips and self-releases, here we find the UK talent in full vinyl mode with two ridiculously on-point 140 jams. "Dip Dip Potato Chip" is every bit as tasty and filling as it sounds. Trippy, slurring and woozier than a disgraced celeb, this one sucks you right in and doesn't even bother to chew you up; it just swallows you whole. "Illa" takes the freakiness to even more refreshingly vital levels with its pitched ghetto vocals and drill-like snares. As with all previous Sentry releases, this is nothing short of essential.

Scavenger (12")
Cat: NMN 009. Rel: 07 Jan 14
  1. Scavenger
  2. Scavenger (TMSV remix)
Review: It's finally landed. Word of this driving slab of pneumatic techno-teased dubstep first emerged on FatKidOnFire in the spring of 2012. Powered by a pulsating heartbeat bass warp, enveloping synth washes and relentless rhythm dynamic that simply won't quit, it comes complete with a distinctive sitar hook that refuses to leave your ears for years. It's complemented by an equally disarming remix from TMSV where a snake-like percussion line takes the lead and the elements are dragged into a swamp of rich sub bass. Get scavenging as soon as you.

  1. Ishan Sound & Hodge - "C5" (4:37)
  2. Ishan Sound & Muttley - "Still Smoking" (4:24)
Review: Having recently notched up 100 releases, Tectonic begins a new era by offering up a suitably weighty collaborative release from Peng Sound regular Ishan Sound. On side A, the Young Echo member joins forces with Hodge - owner of the nicest hair in techno - for the deep and dreamy dubstep shuffle of "C5", where fluid riffs dance above a blazed but powerful beat. Muttley lends a hand on flipside cut "Still Smoking", an altogether livelier and more aggressive - if still suitably deep and hazy - 140 BPM workout that comes complete with stabbing, grime style riffs and some serious subsonic bass.

Review: Previously spotted on Boomarm Nation, Turkish bass experimentalists make their debut on Innamind's Blacklist imprint with four of the nuttiest, most far-out tracks you'll hear this season. Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. Off the planetary hook.

  2. Iskeletor - "Afromax" (Gantz Seytan remix) (3:53)
  3. Grup Ses - "Mimar" (Iskeletor remix) (1:49)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kerem Sevincli AKA Iskeletor, an Istanbul-based beat-maker and bass-loving experimentalist who last featured on Tektosag way back in 2013. His return to the imprint boasts a trio of tracks on one-side, with an attractive, etched illustration on the other. He begins with "Afromax", a two-minute flurry of chopped experimental hip-hop beats, mangled bicycle bell and nuts-and-bolts percussion and wonky, shape-shifting electronics. Gantz Seytan remixes, cannily emphasizing the wonkiness of the beats on an outer-space excursion that's near hallucinatory in its twisted, slow motion approach. To round things off, Sevincli offers up his rework of Grup Ses cut "Mimar", re-casting it as a dystopian, ever-changing experimental beatscape rich in redlined sounds and epileptic drumbeats.

Cat: WRDUBS 05. Rel: 21 Aug 18
  1. Jackson - "Bloom" (4:40)
  2. Ether - "Ghossst" (4:17)
Review: Two sides, two vibes: Well Rounded Dubs get real with two refreshingly singular pieces of 140 innovation. Yung Jackson builds on his releases on the likes of Dub Tribu and Under Surveillance with this long awaited industrial strength minimal swagger jam. Sounding like it was made in the hottest part of a metal foundry while wearing an iron shirt, it's the sound of a new generation artist making a serious statement of intent. Flip for more forthright soundsystem fury from Denver's Ether as he gets his grunge on with a rough, sludgy bass riff that scuffs the beats, the gutter, its knuckles and your own purdy little features. Limited to the not-so-well-rounded amount of 297 copies, sleeping on this is not recommended.

Review: Following his recent collaboration with Sepia on Wheel & Deal, Chonkmob's Koma gets busy on Encrypted with three dastardly originals. "Moonlight" is murky and all fogged out with devilish tendencies while "Uncle Sullivan" takes a trappist approach with its lavish lead strikes creating drama on every up and down. "Deep In The Crease" (with Dalek One) is all about the hip hop breaks, gritty sleaze, off beat samples and sweary cockney. Need a more trippiness? Jump on Murk's remix.

Review: Emergent chameleons Letherette are making quite a splash following their initial appearances on Ho Tep and Brownswood, and they deliver their first EP for Ninja Tune with an assured tone to their hybrid sound. At times sounding positively housey and at others locked into a fractured kind of groove, the overwhelming feeling is one of savvy pop music that reaches for all the right kind of signifiers to hold weight with the underground without fearing to embrace song structures and brief moments of anthemic bombast. There is a largely downtempo feel to Featurette even when the tracks are a touch more lively, but it binds the EP together smartly to offer a cohesive group that appeal on many different levels.

  4. Kode9 - "Xingfu Lu" (Helix remix)
Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Review: Last spotted on Encrypted's Codedinsound V/A album in 2017, Denver's Malleus returns with his first full EP for the label. If you've been following his sounds on the likes of Gourmet Beats and Foundation Audio, you'll know exactly what's up here; swampy, otherworldly textures, trippy aesthetics, warped and weirded out sound designs. "Damien" takes the lead with demonic graveyard arpeggios and pressurised kicks while "Dragging The Lake" is swampy, grotty and gloopy in consistency but poignant and barbed in emotional energy. For maximum wonk jump on "Grinn" while militant nightmare heads should jump straight onto the finale "To Kiss The Witch's Flesh". Filth.

  2. 12:09 (6:54)
Review: As a DJ, promoter and producer, Version boss Orson has been championing dubstep in Germany longer than almost anyone else (fact: he made his production debut way back in 2010!). These days he's an established figure internationally, releasing music that's every bit as good as that made by the sound's British pioneers. "Life Gamble", which opens his latest EP, is something of a peach. Built around a headline grabbing, digi-dub style bassline, the track is deep, dreamy and melodious, with ambient sound washes offering a neat contrast to his ricocheting dubstep beats and blazed audio textures. Flipside "12:09", meanwhile, is a far more straightforward proposition, with the German bass-head serving up an intoxicating dancefloor stepper rich in stabbing bass and echoing electronics.

  1. Yrs Ago (6:50)
  2. Animus (4:59)
Review: Callum "Paleman" Lee is one of Swamp 81's most decorated artists, having released a string of well-regarded 12" singles for the hyped, bass-obsessed imprint. Yrs Ago is his third EP for the label's 81 offshoot, and sees him joining the dots between techno, post-dubstep bass music, and angular electronica. The title track sets the tone, with robotic voices, creepy electronics and smooth sub-bass riding a metallic, broken techno groove. Flipside "Animus" is a marginally more melodic affair, with spacey chords and bubbling arpeggio lines riding a punchy electro rhythm. Both tracks are naturally rather heavy, and undoubtedly amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

Pinch's 2010 speaker shredder "The Boxer" gets an absolute fouling with epic distortion on the bass and swaggering drums. It's so heavy it's been on dub for at least two years. Review: Fragrant frequencies from New Zealand: newcomer Scent makes his official 12" debut on soundsystem celebrating Aussie imprint Modern Hypnosis with two beguiling modern dub cuts. First up is the pneumatic stamper "Trax" where the prominent beat patterns are offset by a slightly off beat warped stab to create a fun but focused marching sensation. "Just A Dream" plays the consummate foil as Scent takes us much deeper into his psyche by way of slo-mo sci-fi drums and swooning, star gazing chords. Beautiful.
