Tempa Allstars Vol 8
Cat: TEMPA 104. Rel: 30 Dec 15
Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

Caski - "Lunatic"
El-B - "Romp"
Review: Some two years since their last emission, El B's Ghost imprint returns with a double dose of dark side swingers weighed down by the sheer pressure of the bass! There might be little information to hand about Caski (other than a remix credit for Man Recordings from 2009) but "Lunatic" is perfectly titled and perfectly poised to cause dancefloor mayhem with rave specific stabs aligning to bucking percussion and screw face inducing sub bass in gleefully obnoxious fashion. It makes for the sort of track you hope there isn't a club photographer nearby when it gets dropped. EL B's contribution "Romp" is positively serene in comparison with detailed bouncing steppah rhythms (some lovely cymbal touches) engulfed by a jagged, schizoid mid range garage frequency.

Chad Dubz & Biome - "455" (DJ Madd remix) (4:40)
Review: For the latest volume in FatKidOnFire's vinyl series, boss man Will Benton has handed over the reins to Foundation Audio founder Chad Smit AKA Chad Dubz, a producer who can usually be relied on the deliver the sub-heavy goods. He begins by joining forces with Biome on '455', a laidback but weighty slab of punishing dubstep creepiness, before uniting with Eddy Seven on a fine fusion of bassline style warped bass and crunchy post-dubstep beats ('Strictly'). He goes solo on 'Nilaari', an aggressive and angry slab of dancefloor dubstep peppered with 8-bit electronics, before DJ Madd delivers a sparse, stripped-back and insanely sub-heavy re-wire of '455'.

Conzi - "Kway" (4:12)
Ehua - "Venom" (4:51)
Zygos - "'11" (4:01)
Jamiu - "Rasaks" (4:47)
Review: Full 140 futurism right here from burgeoning London label Cutcross as four exciting new-gen artists from across Europe flex their sub muscles. Conzi lights the smouldering fire with 'Kway', a smoking slab of roomy dubstep primed strictly for big systems. Ehua follows with an even deeper piece of club bass as she weaves startling atmospheres between spacious percussion. Elsewhere Belgium's Zygos fires off some heavy sirens before Jamiu (a UK artist who used to be known as Perspective) brings the whole EP to a juicy and joyously unsteady finale with the rattling percussion and heavy dub echoes of 'Rasaks'. Cutting edge bass.

Deep Heads Dubstep Vol 3: Sampler 2
Danny Scrilla - "#1 Station" (4:55)
Escapism Refuge - "Traps" (4:00)
Sukh Knight - "Havoc" (4:30)
Synpal & Ras Stimulant - "Ital Being" (5:52)
Review: The Deep heads crew have put together some superb sounds for the third volume of their Deep Heads Dubstep Volume 3 and now they are issuing plenty of the cuts on a series of tasty samplers. Danny Scrilla kicks this off with some classic urban soundscapes and reflective synths and Escapism Refuge's 'Traps' then gets a nice bump on. Sukh Knight's 'Havoc' introduces some nice frosty low end wobble and Synpal & Ras Stimulant close down with the midnight shuffle of 'Ital Being.' This is cutting edge stuff that shows there is plenty of life in the dubstep sound yet

Moody (4:40)
Review: For The Heads bring some moody sounds on their fourth EP, with the mysterious E S P behind the beats. This is their first release of the year and only a fourth since 2018, but it hits hard. 'Blank' is a low end wobbler with pitch shifted vocals turned into a synth sound. 'Mycelium' is another sparse and mysterious one with curious leads and bright chords underpinned by hefty sub bass. 'Limits' is a marker, more lurching track with whirring machine sounds and crashing hits while the title track rides on the most bulbous baseline of the lot. It's brilliantly late night and urban.

Stalactite (Alter Echo remix) (3:15)
Stalagmite (Tetrad remix) (4:55)
Review: E3 makes his debut on Gourmet with two almighty constructions; "Stalactite" is a wave of trippily textured bass that just laps and laps over you relentlessly, pushing breath out of you with every wash. As the name suggests, "Stalagmite" has a much lower centre of gravity with a much more stern tone and restrained sense of menace. Remix-wise E3 frequent partner in grime Alter Echo switches out the bass drama for a swinging dancehall riddim and a sparse, teasing groaning bass hook while Tetrad gets his 4/4 dub on with "Stalagmite". Another fine feast.

Eastern Roots - "Elements" (dub mix) (3:41)
Review: Some 18 months have passed since Eastern Roots' last release, so it's good to see them back in action and in such fine form, too. The focus here is largely on the A-side hook-up with roots scene stalwart I-David. In both its original and Dub Mix variations, "Freedom Fighter" is an exercise in floor-friendly dub reggae rich in Augustus Pablo style Melodica solos, meandering delay trails, ricocheting percussion and heavy sub-bass. Over on side B, Eastern Roots goes solo on two versions of the more exotic and electronic soundsystem dub workout "Elements", with the decidedly trippy and mind-altering Dub revision being our pick.

Review: After launching with a Headland release last year, Subtle stride forth with another exciting talent from New Zealand for your radar: Ebb. "Surface Tension" is an absolute steam roller of a jam with the bassline unfolding its flabs over and over until you're covered in slimy low-end fat. "Bokkei" raises the prang stakes a little with minor key strikes and a more aggressive rolling bassline that doesn't so much as unfold but KO punch its way through the mix. Subtle? Sublime more like.

Chords Trip (5:07)
Review: Riddim Tuffa's Echoboy follows up releases on Moonshine and Solway Dub with this exceptional triplet of soundsystem jams on Soul Ex Machina. Cosmic, meditative but kicking like a sub-loaded mule, there's a gentle progression throughout the EP. 'Roots Of Dub' immerses us like a Smith & Mighty blueprint, 'We Lock Down The Block' is a little more dancefloor focused but still heavily restrained and pared back (similar to Tipper at his deepest and most star-gazey) while finally 'Chords Trip' closes on a much more traditional digi dub tip. Beautiful.

Review: Following a string of system sizzlers on the likes of Soul Ex Machina, Energy Of Dub and Solway Dub, Riddim Tuffa's Echoboy returns to the mighty Moonshine with three more exceptional slabs of meditative bass weight. Taking off where his debut on the label - 'Jahova' - left us in 2022, once again we're hurled head first into the bass scoops in a manner of ways - 'Fire' flings us in feet first, allowing us to skip and bounce over thick treacle low-end, 'Dem Time Dance Ram' spins us round before pushing us in so we're completely out of control and at the mercy of the percussion while 'Lofi Dub' chucks us in head first and tells us to mind our head on those wubs. Immense bass science.

Broken Tape Dub
Review: Kenzo's Lion Charge machine fires up for a new year with this spectacular slab of modern dub from Croatian producer Egoless. "From Dust To Dub" is a tightly coiled bouncer with a bassline so bulbous technically it requires diet advice from its GP. "Broken Tape Dub" keeps its feet in the same dance but its head is miles away thanks to tripped out mourns and outer planetary textures of the high and low variety vie for our attention. The perfect balance of roots fire and future.

Review: Old meets new and tradition meets invention on this 12" which sees Egoless return to LoDubs with three new tunes. These killer cuts showcase the artists signature reggae centric garage, as well as his back for dance floor ready bass and drum workouts that sound something like the bastard child of UK funky and tribal, drum driven dubstep. 'Before Dub' has a curious vibe that keeps you engaged, while 'Woodpecker's Groove' is a restless and kinetic affair primed to tease and please a floor with its unpredictable beats and charming samples. 'The Day After The Riot' is all about that low end and gorgeous reverb.

Global (6:30)
Review: Croatia's Ognjen Zecevic, otherise known as Egoless, has been absolutely smashing over the last three years, with releases for imprints like ZamZam Records and Deep Medi Music instilling his sound at the top of the contemporary bass game. To that point, here he is on Youngsta's Sentry Records, home to producers like dBridge, Caspa and Gramz - so you know the quality is on point. The title tune "Decolonize" is an Eastern riddim, mashing up tough dub-steps with flutes and chimes from the Levant; "Global" keeps that narrative going with some Middle-Eastern melodies blended up and filtered-down into a heady, percussive groove for the ultimate mood-switcher.

Uck Foff (4:41)
Review: It's been a strong year for Balkan badman Egoless who pulled in a whole new field of ears with his insanely on-point ska cover of Benga & Coki's "Night". "I'm From The Bakans" is a great showcase of his leftfield weight. The title track is an ardent reminder that we still have heaps of room to experiment in drums and textures with rhythm combinations that sound like no other. "Psychonautilus" is powered by creepy dreams. All wonky, foggy and freaky - if Nicolas Jaar did dub, he wouldn't sound too far from this. "Uck Foff" keeps us in the dense mists as thick atmospheres are broken but a strangely shuffling beat and unpredictable mechanical bass tones. No one is doing it like Egoless.

It Goes (Benny Ill remix) (5:49)
Review: While his Six Sunsets partnership with Drumterror has become a staple feature of the UK bass music scene over the last five years, Luke Chipperfield-Outing has not released that many solo singles as Ekula. For that reason, this rare outing on Encrypted Audio is a significant release. Title track 'It Goes' is particularly potent, with Chipperfield-Outing peppering a weighty, post-dubstep rhythm with cut-up male vocal samples, UK garage style synth stabs and pleasingly glassy-eyed musical flourishes. The producer's UKG influences are also evident on 'Club Banger', a fittingly titled number that smothers a hardcore style breakbeat in female vocal samples, pulverising sub-bass and speed garage-inspired organ stabs. This hardcore revival vibe continues on the EP's closing cut: a rave-igniting revision of 'It Goes' from UK bass stalwart Benny Ill.

Review: YES! El B is back on the newly relaunched Bison Recordings with some of that proper dubstep business! The UKG legend first hinted at Bison's return almost 12 months ago, slipping out a brief clip of the heavyweight roller "Club Music (I Keep The Club Moving) on his Soundcloud - that it's taken till now for it to surface on wax can be forgiven seeing as Bison has been dormant for over a decade. The aforementioned track is the perfect complement of tuff, sub heavy dubstep riddims and ruff vocals from MC D-Twist and comes backed with the harsh mid range 2 stepper "Ghost In Your Stereo".

Stableface (Macc remix)
Review: Bristol hub Soul Motive scored a massive coup in enlisting Punch Drunk boss Peverelist to remix "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Clouds Of Moments, the 2010 debut set from Lithuanian experimental dubstepper Eleven Tigers. That they choose to complement it with two further remixes is tantamount to treating us, with both Dark Sky and Macc on board to further re-contextualise the cracked atmospherics. In the hands of Dark Sky, "Stableface" is twisted into a brooding dark side steppah with subtle hints of jungle pressure pervading the lower reaches, the 50 Weapons trio playfully teasing with the vocal before dropping in a bassline that can only be described as rude. On the flip, Macc showcases his enviable drumming skills with a heavily cinematic roller of a remix dominated by those rumbling, live rhythms.

Stableface (Peverelist remix)
Review: "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Lithuanian producer Eleven Tigers' debut album "Clouds Are Mountains" found itself pride of place on this 12" release from Soul Motive. Opening with an extended intro of cracked Burial-like atmospherics, the track soon gains a life of its own with its minimal 2-step beat and cracked vocal samples, complete with the kind of intricate melodicism of Four Tet. On the flip side Bristol's Peverelist turns in a fine reworking of the track. Taking the already sparse original and extending its panoramic reach even further, he concentrates on the micro qualities of the rhythms, opens up huge holes in the original's deft tapestry and creates a masterful reworking which brings out the dubstep within its DNA.

Despite the absence, Aleksei Egorchenkov is on fine form for Critical here, experimenting with new tempos and new collaborators without any hint of sacrificing his skills for raw, next level drum and bass. He's in typically deep, dark and clandestine form, albeit with an added sprinkling of sci-fi sounds and intergalactic vibes. He hits the ground running with 'Area 51', where sparkling, high-register melodies, echoing spoken word snippets and alien electronics ride punchy beats and a rumbling bassline, before opting for a more immersive and atmospheric sound on 'Into the Ground'. 'The Cosmos' ratchets up the sub-bass pressure another notch whilst also showcasing some picturesque lead lines, while 'No Sleep' wraps deep space ambient chords and delay-laden riffs around another weighty groove.

Enigma Dubz gets real with an obscene oscillator that rumbles heavily in a way that wouldn't have gone amiss on Immerse 10 years ago, Lost take us deep into the woods on a sledge of toxic bass slurry while Bukez Finezt lets loose in the freestyle way only he knows how. Review: Having already offered up the first part of their 50th release trilogy, the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew slams down volume two. While its predecessor focused on undeniably deep cuts, this edition is all about aural darkness. Enigma Dubz gets things going in fine style via the slow-spaced out riddims, creepy sub-bass and clandestine electroic motifs of "Exosphere", before Pushloop reaches for oddball sci-fi vocal samples, punishing wobble-bass and maniacal laughter on "Age Of Fear". Truth weighs in with the bleeping, slow-stepping haziness and bowel-bothering bass of "Show Dem", while Khiva opts for a vibrating sub-bassline, metallic hits and tons of ricocheting effects on closing cut "Flight Club".
