Fallow & Alex Compton - "String Assassin" (3:49)
Kaido - "Kennedy Bridge" (4:27)
Zha - "Without" (3:47)
Nakes - "Moksha" (4:02)
Review: White Peach's admirable Peach Bits series, which draws together previously unreleased gems from the label's growing roster of artists, has reached its fifth volume. While previous volumes have largely aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this edition is more eclectic in outlook. Compare, for example, the paranoid, exotic darkness of Kaido's deep dubstep rattler "Kennedy Bridge" and the Eastern mysticism - via the Spanish Riviera - of Zha's "Without", which pairs gentle dubstep rhythms with lilting Japanese melody lines and flamenco guitar flourishes. Or, for that matter, the drowsy, post-rock-meets-dubstep haze of Fallow and Alex Compton's "String Assassin", and the blissfully exotic, almost Balearic melodies of Nakes' thrillingly positive dubstep shuffler "Moksha".

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Witness the sickness. Kahn & Neek reunite for their first release in over four years on Boofy's Sector 7 and the wait's been more than worth it. Still full of tension, still unbounded, still heavy as elephants, "(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss" takes the lead and it's classic K&N business with its grime elements and big downpitched string riff. It's backed by three more disarming messages: Both "Random Lab" and "Shimmer" take things down to 130 creating more space between the drum hits and heavy chords before "Venus" bids the last farewell with dense atmospheres, big clouds of harmonics and some unique drum sounds. Let's hope they don't leave it another four years.

Review: Who said it doesn't snow in May? Bleak Winter return with their second cold snap after a successful launch with Sub ARTroniks last December and the climate is just as icy and unforgiving. A sub-zero V/A affair, this second instalment ranges from the acidic synth echoes of Karnage & MarkIV's planet-bashing "Zenith" right through to the barbed woozy jazzy haze of Nixsin's "Dreamin'". Other highlights include Korin Complex's staccato data funk gem "Off Kilter" and Deadroom's warm-skanked soul on "Arbaria". Wrap up warm.

Nu Era Dub (4:41)
Mutants (4:26)
Review: Grab this while you can! Kromestar & N-Type's badass trip continues with two more powerful collabs. "Nu Era Dub" is straight up G business from the moment that classic sample hits you between the peepers. A massive dub for the likes of Caspa, Hatch, Cimm or Sicaria Sound, if you've been to any big 140 dance in the last six month then you'll already know this one well. "Mutants" is a complete flip as the pair dig into their jungle influences and cook up a smoky, horn-led 140 jungle vibe. Refreshingly varied and raw... And soon to be rare.

Review: It's been another banger of a year for Ricky Kalsi with a string of releases on his own Nebula imprint plus the likes of Dream Eater, Rotpot and Green King Cuts. Here he makes a very rare appearance on N-Type's Wheel & Deal with two more dark juggernauts. "Bad Trip" cracks open the heavens before the melted bassline oozes out and rains pure prang. "Rolling Skies" continues the theme of heavy weather as Kromey and the bossman go toe-to-toe in an intense game of militant funk. Bad to the bone.

Nurve - "Silentium" (3:52)
Nurve - "Amazon Bleep" (4:51)
Nurve - "Best To Just Ride It" (4:29)
Review: Flexing across his two more prominent aliases, Raff AKA Demon AKA Macabre Unit AKA Nurve b2b's himself hard in the kisser at the behest of professor Nomine. Three tunes a-side, his 140 dubstep-inspired Macabre Unit guise takes the lead with drama and dark humour; "Darth Vader" is a theatrical skanker, "Mash Up Da Place" is a woozy, toxic jam with a bassline that spirals into paranoia while "Man Up" gets all stiff upper-lip with its rising bass hook that flips between textures with a nervous twitch. Raff's slower, tech-inspired Nurve constructions complete the story with glacial glee... "Silentium" is a sparse, deep space twist on halftime and alien jungle, "Amazon" is a swampy triplet swinging riddim while "Best To Just Ride It" sends us packing off to space on a rocket of off-grid drums and raw man-eating bass. Immense.

Quasar & Nova - "Witchcraft" (dub) (5:09)
Saule & Centauri - "Tyrant" (5:10)
Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.

Review: N-Type's latest collaboration project finds the dubstep don work with Wheel & Deal family member Sleeper. This is the latest of several such collections of tunes coming in the next week months. And that's great news because it is another killer four tracker. 'Dozer' is a real slayer with its fizzing synths and dark, cavernous bottom ends dragging you through a bleak urban landscape, then 'Arcane' follows a similar path but with a monstrous lead. 'Drift' is a bright melodic gem that has a more airy and reflective vibe and 'Carbon' closes with a seriously wobbly bottom end.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Outer sleeve torn and corner creased, but product in perfect working order***

It's easy to see why Loefah snapped up this single for Swamp 81. For starters, bass-heavy beat-maker Sumgii has already contributed a number of killer missives to the label's digital catalogue, and "Wanawake" contains one of his fattest beats to date - a sparse, warped, sub-heavy affair that sits somewhere between regular hip-hop and 21st century grime. Then there's the fine bi-lingual English/Swahili rap that sits atop it from Nah Eeto, a rising star of Kenya's blossoming underground. Her style and delivery is distinctive and on-point, working in perfect harmony with Sumgii's killer backing track. Loefah naturally supplies the obligatory remix, placing Eeto's vocal atop a crunchy bed of hip-house style James Brown breaks and stirring synthesizer chords.

Review: Dub maestro Mala joins forces with prominent British writer, dub poet and Rastafarian Benjamin Zephaniah and Natty for this heavy hitting, hand-stamped 12". "I'm a bad man anyway, this is my sound" says Zephaniah with real passion as spaced out pads and delicate chords soften his battle cry, and his musings on the black man's struggle, righteousness and Rastafarianism play out in absorbing fashion. Best believe this one is going to become a real cult favourite, not least because of the exceptional sound design and sense of space inherent in any Mala tune.

NDread - "Grandeur"
Demon & Chapta - "Fate"
Demon & Occult - "Motive"
Review: Four of MUD's brightest darkstars collide right here for an EP that has no delusions of "Grandeur" whatsoever. NDread ignites this slow-burning fire with a slinky, slo-mo halfstepper that's peppered with a beefy bass melody that never loses paces. Demon & Chapta's "Fate" follows. Spitting a spikier riddim, there's a playful balance of deep and pure darkness thanks to echoing amens on the fills and some ace warp-factor fine-tuning to the bass. Demon then teams up with Occult for the final heaving hurrah "Motive". Wafting with dreamy synth washes, we're thrown deep into a metallic sea of alien bass groans, complete with mild eastern twangs. Yet another consistent package from dubstep's deepest quarters.

Weedlot (6:02)
Clodbuster (5:53)
Suttree (5:28)
Calico (4:14)
Review: Skid Row is a carefully composed six-tracker of modern club and soundsystem oriented Bristol-influenced bass music. Believe it nor not, all basslines on this release are created by the same untypical hardware device, the Benidub DS71 Dub Siren. The tracks fuse grime and techno, picking up early reggae and 90s warehouse toasting - far from shiny algorithm optimization. 'Rictus' attunes the listeners to a playful, deeply swinging bassline embedded in reduced drums and comfy pads. 'Cockatrice' unfolds a technoid, almost trancelike impetus - dressed in broken beats and thoughtful vocal samples. 'Weedlot' sticks more to the funky side and cavorts with witty sonic effects, while the flip meets with 'Clodbuster': a conscious, truly demolishing badass tune in the spirit of only-the-rawest UK bass and grime; 'Suttree', finally, slows things down to a wide and wry space garnished with reggae horns and contemporary dance music samples. The record closes with growling drums, reverberant chords, tripping vocal snippets, and a sub-bass targeted on blurring your sight: 'Calico'.

Review: Hold on tight for some low end wobblers here from this new EP, Duploc Selects Y, featuring six sizzlers from six different artists on the DUPLOC label. Ninety kicks off with the cancerous 'Snek's Kiss' with its low end snaking through a desolate urban landscape. Then comes the icy stepper that is 'Ditcher' from Zygos and Mistah's 'Shook' gets more edgy with unsettling leads and earth shattering drums. 207 offers crunchy drum textures and hefty bass weight on 'Japan Digital' and Idioteque's 'Morality' is another lurcher with scraping hits. Ghostek closed down with the dread-fuelled 'Seek War'.

Heather
Review: St Petersburg based producer Nocow has being developing his brand of ethereal, emotive bass music for several years, and the past 12 months have seen his profile rise further with releases for Fauxpas Musik and Infinite Machine. Like those releases, there's an overwhelming melancholy that pervades the intricate post-2 step beat work of these tracks; "Butwe" combines sonorous square wave synths and mournful vocals in a remarkably clean R&B style production, the gentle 2-step of "Yule" comes generously drenched Burial inspired crackle and moments of string led drama, while the 140pm urgency of "Homeward Rain" is given weight with its minor key progressions and choral undertones. On the flip it's a somewhat different story; "Won't" is imbued with a sense of optimism, "Nomore" delivers a tech-house burner with found sound accents and rhythmic swing and "Heather" saves the best for last with its rolling organic percussion and synth backdrop that cascades over them like a misty waterfall.

Review: The first single to be taken from Maya Jane Coles' new dub-minded Nocturnal Sunshine project, both "Take Me There" and "Never Too Late" explore the fertile pastures amid the tech/dub axis with garage-minded glee. The former is a relentless, jittering stepper peppered with an array of twisted processed vocals. The latter, meanwhile, comes with more of Get Physical-style tubular bass and thundering rhythm that will sit in almost any style DJ's playlist from deep house to dubstep. If you like these, you'll love the album.

Review: Nomine; a university lecturer frequently found flexing on Tempa gets busy on Amit's ever-developing imprint Amar. "Closed Doors" takes the two-step equation and flips it with deep bass maths. "Empty Rooms" is a lean, minimal affair with echoes of Detroitian dystopian detuned synths and stop-motion percussion. "99' Aachen" sees Nomine adding to the grime narrative. Ardent kick/snare patterns, stark strings and rifle voicing from 9er, file under murker. Finally we hit "Voodoo Native", a militant march in the unknown powered by tribal drum thumps and a bass tone that plays the perfect drill instructor, eking ahead of the drums with pernicious authority.

128.1
Review: Nomine returns to Tempa for another session of unabated darkness. Meaning business from the off, "Nomine's War" rolls with some clever rhythm on the kicks and scorching Reeces that both amount to a cool sense of early D&B. "Anxiety Tone" is much sludgier and more paranoid. Again, there's a great sense of energy in the beat department but it's measured with much more menace. "128.1" closes the deal with more of a classic, traditional dubstep motif. Abyss-level production, slow hypnosis on the percussion and yet more begrudging bass tones. Make "War", not love...

Searching
Review: There seems to be a buzz about Nomine right now. Largely because he's seemingly come out of nowhere with one EP ("Jahpan" on Dubzilla) and is already on one of the biggest imprints in the scene. It's not hard to hear why, mind; "Nomine's Sound" is a tropical roller with a textured percussive pattern that just infects the floor with utter funk. "Searching" is a little deeper and more cosmic in its make up thanks to a hypnotic wood-block drum riff, mourning pads and a bassline that weeps as much as it wobbles.

No one does the no-rules bass game like Nomine and here we find him returning to a deep temp(a)plate that he helped to sculpt. "Stomp" is concentrated doom with deep pressured coded into the wandering sub, industrial swagger and slo-mo mentasms. "Slip" continues the weight and steel foundry clanging drums but with vapour trails of Oriental melody sliding and swooning above. Stunning material from one of the hardest working and talented men in the bass game.

Review: Two certified dubstep donnies collide for 'Ascension', a unique album that explores 140 music from the system roots to the very outer edges. Made remotely during the recent frustrating years, the pair developed a strong creative code and built a body of work that taps into Nomine's 'Blind Man' signature but trembles with that minimal Mondays vibe Youngsta famously pushed. This 12" is a great snapshot of the LP with some of the beguiling features; Breezy Lee brings a Portishead like earnestness on 'Catch Me', there's the disarming violin work and stark bass tones on 'Chasm' and Lelijveld's spelling-binding whispers on 'Hidden' will stop you in your tracks. '528' takes us far east for a final blast of special inspiration. A unique set.

Review: Dat Pressure keep digging back into the archives of main man Noodles with some of the highly sought after heat that has been fetching silly money on the second hand market. When it comes to the darker end of the garage spectrum, some of these jams are right up there with the best and so getting a chance to lay your hands on a stone cold jam like "99" is a dream come true for any true 2-step head. Beats and bass just don't come sicker than this. "Black Puppet" meanwhile lays down the law as far as wobble bass goes, proving just how pioneering Noodles was with his work as Groove Chronicles.

Regal Dub (4:54)
Pagan Dub (6:01)
Mystery Dub (5:20)
Glory Verison (6:59)
Rockers Sci Fi (5:55)
Stronger Together (4:55)
Review: Former Grid member and now ambient superstar Richard Norris delivers two new oracular divinations for his very own Group Mind label, the imprint formed in and after the COVID-19 lockdowns to help mindfully assuage the creeping anxieties of the age. A six-track 12" limited to just 30 copies - numbered and signed by the artist himself (move quick, hares) - these six tracks segue between dub and deep listening, fronting the bass and keeping percussive elements spread and panned. Best on the obverse is the A3, 'Mystery Dub', whose endlessly delayed stabs and cutoff conga samples well convey a vacuum-of-space vibe. The B-side moves into snake-charming dancehall territory, the punning, chordophonic 'Rockers Sci Fi' and the vocal blissout 'Stronger Together' being the ethereal highlights.

Bonafide EP

Bonafide (4:40)
Single Fuse (4:38)
Fivers (4:48)
Intricacy (with Foamplate) (4:40)
Review: Nova is a new signing for the Infernal Sounds crew and the artist has saved some of his best work for the occasion. He opens up with 'Bonafide,' a dark and heavy wobbler with a busy, oscillating low end that is full of menace while some subtle pitched up vocals hint at the rave. 'Single Fuse' is a noter one to loosen the bowels and melt your face with its lumpy, leggy rhythms and tripped out watery effects. It's 'Fivers' which then gets more tight and tense with an edgy synth hustling in the background while jittery snares keep you on edge up front. 'Intricacy' closes with a heavyweight bottom end and plenty of reverb to get lost in.

Win U Back (4:40)
Glisten (Somah remix) (4:32)
Win U Back (Meddem remix) (4:47)
Review: Fresh from missives on Red Lagoon, Tribe 12 Music, ENGZ and Plantpower, Nova brings his unique brand of melodious, ultra-deep bass science to Romulus. He hits the ground opening with essential opener 'Ghosted', a collaboration with Saule that adds chopped spoken word samples and chiming, music box style melodies to a rolling dubstep beat and pulsing sub-bass. 'Glisten' adds more undulating, ear-catching synth sounds to a faster and arguably even weightier beat, while 'Win U Back' is ghostly, chunky and heavy in the best possible way. Remix-wise, we're particularly impressed by Meddem's rework of 'Win U Back', which alternates between heady ambient sections and deep, crunchy dubstep grooves.
