Rain (3:41)
Review: Last year Burial and the Bug joined forces as Flame 1, delivering an in-demand EP on the latter's Pressure label featuring two sizable slabs of industrial strength soundsystem science. Here they return as Flame 2, once again offering up a pair of weighty dancefloor excursions. A-side "Dive" is a loud and claustrophobic affair, as the duo wraps dystopian dub bass and sparse, mutilated post-drill rhythms in layers of apocalyptic aural textures and mind-altering dub techno style processed noise. Flipside "Rain" is arguably more suitable for dancefloor plays and sees the esteemed twosome combine pulverizing sub-bass heaviness with dancehall style drums that come smothered in mind-melting effects and paranoia-inducing aural smoke.

In Her City
Sin Love With You
Meu
Lock Lock Key Key
Review: Berlin-based operation Leisure System score a big hit with this, their fourth release, premiering the partnership of Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum in a holy matrimony of refined modern electronics. Opening track "In Her City" has the sheen of Edgar all over it, but the ravey chops have a Machinedrum cheek to them. What's most striking though is that as a whole, the result is wonderfully fresh. On the clipped funk-dream-pop mash-up of "Sin Love With You", or the jagged intricate wiggle of "Meu", this is the sound of two artists meeting perfectly in the middle without any battle of egos and instead creating an excellent new whole.

Cool Me Off (Chopstick Dubplate remix)
Review: The Moonshine Recordings crew return with another platter that matters, brandishing a double drop of skank up business to nice up any dancefloor. "Cool Me Off" finds Murda and Tuffist providing the perfect digi dub minor key bed for Roots and Rose to lay down their heartfelt harmonies. Junglists will flip for the B where Murda goes on a solo flex to add his Chopstick Dub twist with amen-rattling precision. One listen and you'll find this an appropriately titled slab; you will need to cool off after dropping this!

Review: Limited to 300 copies: Netherlands label Next Phase build on their CD and tape-only foundations and deliver their first ever vinyl-only release. As always, it's adorned with the label's usual detail-rich art and powered by innovative compositions. From the savage, break-choking Reinforced hymn "Perpetual Motion" and the dubby Zed Bias-style garage soul of "Poor Man Style" by way of Future Cuts style hurricane soul "Shifted Feelings" and the SUAD-schooled hardcore "94", no expense has been spared as the last 26 years of rave are tied together with true craft.

I Wonder Why (3:46)
Review: Sheesh! And the award for the swampiest, most mutated and wooziest 140 jam of recent times goes to Sibla & Teffa's "Bobby". Presented here on the a; proper sleazy, rolling, oily cosmic dub funk - with some fantastic vocal stamps from the master - it's quite remarkable for the pair's first ever collaboration. As is 'I Wonder Why' on the B. Taking a slightly more traditional dub route, here they dig deep into the roots and really get involved in the sounds and elements, gradually easing us deeper and deeper into the blend before we realise we're cap-deep in a pretty heady psychedelic stew... And we have no plans to swim to shore. Limited to 300, this won't hang around.

Review: Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has continually spread its wings since conception in 2005. Championed by fans of techno, dubstep, experimental and drum & bass alike, his latest EP for Honest Jons (and rumoured to be his last under this monkier) showcases the amalgamation of styles and sounds that has earnt the German such a far reaching fanbase.

If it does prove to be the final T++ release ever, then the alias will have left us with the most expressive and energetic of his works. Adding a real sense of personality, Profrock unearthed a handful of samples of the singer and ndingidi player Ssekinomu, recorded in East Africa in the 1930s and 40s in the label’s vaults for this release. Skilfully, the producer works these snippets into the complex rhythm structures, giving his music a human touch that has never been seen before. Profrock looks to the radical fringe of UK garage for the snapping 2 step vibe in these rhythms that remain central to all four tracks on the EP. This results in a clutch of tracks that take on an immensely tribal and subconsciously innate feel. They morph new structures from the forms of 2 step, techno and drum & bass around which Profrock wraps twisted FX and weighty sub bass to create one whole, throbbing organism.
So with quite possibly his final release, T++ leaves us, rather fittingly, with a record that sounds at once both ancient and modern. It has a totally unique tone, like a form of tribal language that can only speak to and be understood by today’s culture through these sub-heavy, atmospheric sounds.

Shawty (FaltyDL remix)
Review: 502 Recordings finally drop this one! Teeth is the alias of Finnish producer Matti Pentikainen, who has dabbled in everything from abstract hip-hop as Ceebrolistics to dub techno as Mi Ni Ma. Currently ruling the dubstep scene in Helsinki via the club night Alas his Katusea crew run, "Shawty" is a truly auspicious debut- having caught the ear of Sound Pellegrino boss Teki Latex who quite accurately described it as 'northern light-induced-clap-trap-house'. Distinguished by a sultry female vocal, frosted synths and beat programming that shuffles between dubstep, juke and dirty south hip-hop, "Shawty" is yet another hit for Oneman's fledgling label. Adding yet more reason to indulge is the flipside remix from Falty DL which adds more urgency to proceedings via scattergun 2-step riddims, affected vocals and jagged bass flourishes.

Gunman
The Cosmonaut
Review: Tomas Roels' herbal homage "Haze" gets a very subtle VIP massage. A little polish has gone into the percussion and bass to give it that cheeky head nod to the heads who know the original. Elsewhere we hit "Gunman" and "The Cosmonaut". The former is a frenetic riddim jam with all manner of ricocheting percussive elements and off-beat funk. The latter is as deep and spacious as its title suggests thanks to weeping minor synths and an ominous groaning bass. Three kindly reminders that TMSV is killing it right now.

Review: Bringing their series of Croydon flavoured ruffage to a heavyweight six-track climax, TMSV, Samurai Breaks and THUGWIDOW's 'Surrey Street' collection comes together on one limited, hand-numbered, lathe cut 12". Rinsing and flexing TMSV's turbo breaks of 'Abyss Watcher', we're hammered with thumper after thumper; the ice cold snake-like breaks and tension of THUGWIDOW's 'You See How It Spreads Out Like A Fungus', Drumterror & B:Thorough's swampy 140 swagger on the 'Abyss' remix and Samurai Breaks' stampy, pulsating 'Marathon' are all key highlights. Street talk.

Listen (4:19)
Review: Vinyl-only imprint ZamZam Sounds is edging towards 100 releases and will surely hit that milestone at some point in 2024. This is release number 94 and comes courtesy of Innamind alumni and South London sorts Traces. A-side 'No One (Can Tell I)' is the more obviously dub-minded of the pair, with echoing vocal snippets, delay-laden drum machine cymbals and percussive hits riding a skeletal, sub-heavy 'riddim' that adds dubstep swing to a 21st century dub groove. Over on the flip, 'Listen' is a more orthodox dubstep workout - all jaunty but moody grime style stabs, fiendish wobble bass and hot-steppin' South London beats. As usual, the seven-inch is ultra-limited and comes housed in a hand-printed sleeve.

Review: The mysterious Tremble has already appeared on Ruffcut before, his previous 10" being a gnarly blend of dubstep and pure bass delight, and he's up to the same tricks on this latest two-tracker. "Radix" sounds like the kind of dub version that Jah Shaka would play these days, except the beat is broken, shuffling, and the tones in its core are closer to the DMZ end of things, or even Livity Sound's output. "Chalice" follows the same sort of formula, but what is different here is the texture and sci-fi sounds surround the whirlpool of bass holding the track together. Rahh...

Yesterdays
Review: How Strange is Truth's fourth release on Tempa following last year's Devil Hands and Chicks & Drugs. The brass bell chiming title-track features the eastern-tinged vocals of female singer Bijou. Layered over the top of wobbly bass rumbles that create its lurching groove are keys similar to 187 Lockdown's garage crossover hit "Gunman". Two tracks appear on the B-side with the minimal yet heavy drum passages of "Justify" sounding like something that would be right at home on Deep Medi, while its vocals and synth work nestle quite comfortably into the Tempa aesthetic. For some deeper bass vibrations to bliss-out to there's also the icy cold and dusty "Yesterdays".

Review:  Tempa turns back time while staring defiantly into the future: Youngsta takes Truth's summer 2013 thunder-jam "Devil's Hands" and turbo-charges it with such a steppy dynamic you can see the speed lines firing from your speaker. Next up, take J Kenzo's 2012 minimal blunderbuss and introduce an added synth texture and a slinkier groove to the bass. Both fine examples of how to smash a remix while paying respect to the strong originals.

Tribe
Review: Fresh from impressing all with his drops for Distance's Chestplate label, Tunnidge steps back for more Deep Medi action with two brilliant cuts. Rolling out the cinematic dread step atmospherics, "Dark Skies" applies shuddering sub bass undulations and exceptional usage of Rutger Hauer at his best to a punishing half step riddim with consummate expertise. It is however the B Side track "Tribe" that truly impresses, sounding like it should have formed part of last years excellent Congotronics Remix album on Crammed. African rhythms, chants and percussion are edited and twisted around intricate drum programming and droned out sub bass with startling results!

Take Flight
Review: As a long time favourite on his Soundcloud page, Deep Medi finally do the right thing by Tunnidge and release his club-wrecking stepper "Twenty12" in all its apocalyptic glory. The drums are king here, pounding heavy whilst sounding deft and limber at the same time. The doomsday melody ensures the vibe stays appropriate for the track title, and it would be hard to resist such imposing energy in front of a proper soundsystem. "Orion" heads further into synth explorations, laying the dystopian melodies on thick while keeping the bass pressure high, leaving it to "Take Flight" to cool things down with an approach that sounds like the ambient teaser before a devastating jungle drop that never comes.
