Revolution Time
Revolution Time (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SYSTM 036. Rel: 16 Dec 20
  1. Revolution Time (feat Ranking Joe) (4:33)
  2. Revolution Dub (4:00)
  3. War Flute (feat Don Fe) (4:34)
  4. War Dub (4:00)
Review: In these times of difficulty and dread we always turn to music, and there can be no better safe space than these deep dub wise meditations courtesy of Spanish studio wizard Bukkha. Featuring the vocal talents of Ranking Joe and melodic flute work of Don Fe, 'Revolution Time' is a heady one with steel plated drums and swaggering kicks. The dub is more paired back and subtle, while 'War Flute' is another gem that pairs flute beauty with drum based heaviness. A second dub rounds out what is a crucial EP.

The Business EP
Cat: IFS 026. Rel: 06 Jan 21
  1. The Business (3:19)
  2. Naraka (4:20)
  3. Amplified (4:34)
  4. Unresolved (4:12)
Review: Infernal Sounds return with family member Chad Dubz (Foundation Audio) alongside debutant Somah - the latter previously of Deep Medi Musik, Scrub A Dub and Chord Marauders fame. The Business EP features the wonky wall of sound of the title track and its proper progressions in grime, followed by the sinister street level futurism of 'Naraka' going down a dark dubstep route. On the flip, the dread infused mediative dub on "Amplified" is an EP highlight, followed by the equally minimal and contemplative halftime journey "Unresolved".

Procession
Procession (heavyweight orange vinyl 12")
Cat: MEDI 115. Rel: 17 Dec 20
  1. Lobby Theme (4:42)
  2. Eldritch (3:38)
  3. Procession (5:47)
Review: Sheffield-based Dom Tarasek aka Commodo has been making tracks for nearly 12 years now and returns to Mala's Deep Medi Musik with the Procession EP. The three tracks on offer are loosely based on a H.P. Lovecraft inspired story "where an investigator shows up at an unfrequented hotel and discovers a supernatural cult." After the trippy wall of sound polyrhythms on the introspective 'Lobby Music,' more Cthulhu Mythos vibes await on the deep dubstep journey 'Eldritch' before going further down the spiral with the arcane and dusty downbeat epic 'Procession'.

Duna EP
Duna EP (12")
Cat: BSSKRT 002. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Duna (4:19)
  2. Duna (SCHIM92 remix) (4:40)
  3. Duna (Datra remix) (3:44)
  4. Duna (Crowley remix) (3:41)
  5. Duna (Moonstreams remix) (4:21)
Review: The Basskruit gang (aka duploc.com founder Pieter Grauwels and producer Hebbe Versteegh) serve up a second release that follows up the very well received first in fine fashion. The label states it is on a mission to support the local Belgian and Dutch scene and does that by turning to Cubiqle. Once again the music deals in brilliant 140bpm tackle, with heavy bass and crisp percussion. The original, 'Duna', sways and swaggers on half time bass and beats with a saw tooth lead. various remixes include SCHIM92's more broken, heavy take, low end wobble from Datra and Crowley and more prickly synth work from Moonstreams.

Silk Wave
Silk Wave (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SHO 004. Rel: 24 Nov 20
  1. Silk Wave (5:51)
  2. Cosmic Tuba (5:04)
  3. Grounded (feat Javeon) (5:29)
  4. Taken Under (feat Anna Lisa) (7:23)
Review: At one point it felt like we were waiting years between KOAN Sound releases but since their delicious debut album Polychrome in December 2018 they've been incredibly busy with substantial show-stopper EPs like 'Intervals Above' and this summer's curveball 'Silk Wave'. Loaded with some of their most brazen, mind-bending pieces so far; 'Grounded' is like Steve Spacek wearing 2089 hi-tops, 'Silk Wave' is a wonderfully mushroomy mangled web of glitches and stretches, 'Taken Under' is a deep sea odyssey that gradually unravels the closer we get to the surface while 'Cosmic Tuba' is a straight-up swaggering hot mess. Brassy as you like.

Morbid Impulses EP
Cat: DDD 073. Rel: 16 Dec 20
  1. Sweat (3:27)
  2. Magdalena (4:35)
  3. Morbid Impulses (4:27)
  4. Sosa (3:22)
Review: Deep Dark & Dangerous comes on strong once again this December with a badman new offering from Oxossi. This one has it all, from grime-tinged production to deep bass, edgy stabs to lush violins, all of which add up to cinematic tracks that push and pull you in many different directions at once. 'Sweat' sounds like if Wu Tang made dirty dubstep, 'Magdalena' is a percussive and tropical track from the depths of a South American jungle and 'Morbid Impulses' is pure dystopian wobbler. 'Sosa' closes out with gorgeous flute leads taking you down a deep dark path of mystery.

Walk EP
Walk EP (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: MEDI 118. Rel: 17 Dec 20
  1. Walk (4:18)
  2. Inutile (4:38)
  3. Ambivalent (4:42)
  4. External Single Processor (4:41)
Review: This new EP by Quasar is a deeply emotional release. It's about the evolution of the French producer's state of mind in recent years, taking in his mistakes, success and love. All in all it's an evolution heard across all tracks, and he hopes to make you feel the same as he did while composing them. Beginning with the meditative piano timbres of the title track, followed by the deep and dusty dubstep of 'Inutile' on side A. Over on the flip, we have the knackered, off-kilter and arcane vibe of 'Ambivalent' followed by the tripped-out low end theories of 'External Single Processor'. Following up equally impressive releases for the likes of Artikal Music and oundation Audio, bear witness to yet more masterful minimal bass by Remy Gallet.

Do The Right Thing
Cat: MS 058. Rel: 15 Jan 21
  1. Do The Right Thing (5:09)
  2. Do The Right Thing (Roots) (4:32)
  3. Do The Right Thing (Roots dub) (4:32)
Review: Italian vocalist Marina P is the guest on this new 12", and she brings something different than anyone who knows her work might expect. On the brand new single from the forthcoming Radikal Guru album 'Beyond The Borders', she offers a soulful and human counterpart to the shiny metallic drums and urban dubstep bass all around her. She muses on the struggles communities face in the modern day and the mediative beats only serve to heighten the message. The original is backed by two roots style exclusive remixes by the Guru himself.

Kopstoot EP
Cat: BSSKRT 001. Rel: 06 Jan 21
  1. Kopstoot (4:38)
  2. Kopstoot (Hebbe remix) (4:23)
  3. Ketel (2:55)
  4. Ketel (TMSV remix) (3:05)
  5. Ketel (Requake remix) (3:25)
Review: The inaugural release for new Belgian label Basskruit comes from Sweepa of Version Collective, featuring the producer Tosti (Foundation Audio). The ?Kopstoot EP features some deeply reflective and hypnotic expressions in deep dubstep as best heard on the title track, which is chased up by an immersively rhythmic remix by label co-head Hebbe (Overdue/Next Level Dubstep). In addition, we have the groovy and bass driven party vibe of 'Ketel' over on the flip, which also gets treated to yet more worthy renditions. The mesmerising polyrhythms of TMSV's perspective were bang on, while Redquake's low end pulsations add more to an altogether dense, wall of sound presentation - killer!

Snails
Snails (12")
Cat: WPR 050. Rel: 24 Nov 20
  1. Snails (3:42)
  2. Daisy (3:15)
  3. Shattered (2:47)
  4. Tunnels (3:00)
Review: More frequently spotted on one of his other labels - Naan - White Peach impresario Zha celebrates the label's 50th release his first solo EP on the label since 'Southampton Lengman' way back in 2015. Taking off where wonky, left-sided instrumentals like 'Floating' and 'The Tale Of She' left us, once again we're taking to pastures previously unexplored... 'Snails' is all detuned twangs and curmudgeonly bass burps while 'Daisy' is pure hip-hop in its dusty jazz tone and timbre. Meanwhile on the B, 'Shattered' captures the repetitiveness and discipline of a kata while 'Tunnels' digs us deep, deep, deep underground with one of the gruntiest basslines Zha's cooked up so far. Juicy.

  2. Foucault Pendula (5:11)
  3. Munai Bailer (4:20)

  6. Theospinel Sulfide (4:41)
  7. Ekto Gambit (4:00)
  8. Zonic Emulsifizm (4:36)
Review: Roel Funcken is back with another genre-bending, mind melting sonic workout that makes for a perfect soundtrack for your transition from the real world and into an alternate reality. It's a record set in a faraway future, with the title translating as "are you a tourist guide?" in Turkish hinting at that concept further. It's a powerful headspace to be in, with warped bass and pixelated keys racing down on broken beats that lurch forwards into the unknown. This interplanetary exploration comes with a fantastic cover filled with colour and patterns that capture the essence of the music perfectly.
