Review: The New York-based (U)nity is made up of Michael Valeanu, Axel Tosca Laugart, Chris Smith, Max Cudworth and Amaury Acosta. They formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. They say they've been influenced by everyone from Chucho Valdes to Art Blakey to Led Zeppelin to Kendrick Lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. "Guarapachanga" is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at The New School. It's derived from the style known as guarapachangeo - the most advanced form of Cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. On this recording, (U)nity is graced with a guest performance by Grammy Award winner Pedrito Martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on Cuban music. Martinez is also a priest in the Yoruba religion and a historian of Cuban culture.

Over its eight and a half minutes, "Guarapachanga" twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from Latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. The whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the Afro-Cuban essence that is the band's lifeblood. The white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous DJs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. If you didn't know "Guarapachanga" was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a Loft classic; yet it's also as fresh and exciting as anything you'll hear this year.

  1. In Your Eyes (9:42)
  2. As Above So Below (8:05)
Review: After spending last autumn working alongside Rampa and Adam Port (see the trio's excellent "You Are Safe" album on Keinemusik), Andre "&Me" Boadu has enjoyed a quiet 2018. In fact, this outing on Pampa is his first release of 2018. He begins with the atmospheric and undulating delight that is "In Your Eyes", a slightly jazz-flecked rolling deep house excursion that brilliantly builds energy throughout. Boadu accomplishes this using two contrasting melodic elements: fluid piano solos and a foreboding electronic motif that increases in prominence and intensity as the track progresses. Over on side B, "As Above So Below" is an altogether deeper proposition, with hushed, cymbal heavy percussion, tech-tinged drums and a spacey, undulating synthesizer melody combining to create a hazy late night mood.

  1. 154 - "Daze" (3:25)
  2. Damon Lamar - "Rising Sun" (7:57)
  3. Claro Intelecto - "Signifier" (6:19)
  4. Lowtec - "Dat America" (6:48)
Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

  1. Sunday Avuncular (7:56)
  2. Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone (6:14)
  3. Mononymous Persons (5:37)
Review: Tathan, Mensah and Dego get brow deep in bruk science once again with three supreme grooves. "Sunday Avuncular" is a rampant fire that's sparked with minimal elements but suddenly whips up into a full uptempo storm. "Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone" is the smooth talker of the set with its soulful boogie tones and a momentum that gets more and more direct as the track develops. Finally "Mononymous Persons" concludes this special 12" with a staccato beat and groove so wet 2000 Black should consider selling special branded towels. Exceptional.

Review: 2DeepSoul are the core crew behind Inner Shift music, so as you might expect they've got a keen instinct for the finest strains of pure deep house as you'd happily dig from the likes of Patrice Scott or Fred P. They open up the Windows EP with the dreamy haze of "Clarity" before "Contour Lines" brings a pulsing, techy lead into the mixture of sweeping pads and snappy beats. "Someday" is a rich, harmonious ambient excursion, and then "It's A Sign" finishes the EP off with a truly meditative trip for the smoothest deep house cruisers to lock onto.

Review: German imprint Quintessentials' mission statement is to keep underground house music on the map. It claims to hold a candle to those old house records: they love that raw yet soulful vibe. For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of B side cut "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

Review: While they may have mined many of their classic early releases, it's taken until now for the resurgent Vibraphone crew to return to their very first offering form way back in 1992. 49th Floor was a pseudonym of Stefano Curti, one of the mainstays of the label, and Night Passage was the classic record that started it all off. The whole EP has been given the remastering treatment and sounds fresher than ever, with "Fast City" in particular shining bright with its urgent swing, luscious bassline and sprightly keys. This is house music in its purest form, often imitated but never replicated.

  1. Planet Be (5:53)
  2. Almost Heaven (6:16)
  3. Contrast (7:19)
  4. Entropy (4:46)
Review: Having successfully joined forces with Samo DJ on two tidy EPs for Public Possession and the Trilogy Tapes, former cos/mes man 5ive makes his long-awaited solo debut. First up is the undeniably cosmic and spacey deep house chug of "Planet Be", where shimmering synth riffs and bubbly electronics cluster around a sparse, tribal-tinged groove. He successfully breaks up the beats and ups the dreaminess on languid ambient house cut "Almost Heaven", before wrapping what sound like Harmonium lines around a bustling Afro-house groove on "Contrast". 5ive rounds things off in impressive fashion via "Entropy", an ultra-deep affair that sounds like dub techno for the dream house generation.

  1. Some Song Teachers (5:56)
  2. Dilemma (5:40)
Review: There's a lot to be said for club music that aims to both soothe the senses and move the feet. We can think of few better examples than "Some Song Teachers", the title track from this Public Possession collaboration between Cos/Mes member 5ive and label-hopping Swede Samo DJ. While underpinned by a sturdy, tactile rhythm track, it's the blissful electronics and undulating, rising and falling synthesizer melodies - new age influenced, but also intensely positive and mood-enhancing - that make the track so addictive. Flipside "Dilemma" is similarly smile inducing, offering a tasty twist on melodious, dusty deep house. It's nowhere near as striking as its' predecessor, but it's still a very fine track indeed.

Review: Doug Smith and Richard Payton aka 95 North are a house music production duo from Washington DC. They are well known for their 90's discography which was full of hits on the likes of Strictly Rhythm, King Street Sounds and Slip 'N Slide, including collaborations with Crystal Waters and Sabrynaah Pope. "Let Yourself Go' was originally released in 1995 and probably one of the best moments of their activity in the house music scene. The jacking and swing fuelled vocal house of "Let Yourself Go" (Penn Ave mix) is a real zeitgeist of stateside house music of the mid noughties. Equally memorable were the dark and tribal drums of "Capitol mix" (reminiscent of classic Cevin Fisher) or the deeper and sexier garage vibe of the "Georgetown mix".

Review: Smile & Wave appears from out of nowhere with two unknown names heading up the first release. There's no indication of who is behind A Houseband or Russian Hackers, but both of them have done a damn fine job of bringing two sure fire killers to wax. The first is "Another Love Another Happiness", which as the title candidly suggests is yet another version of the oft-sampled "Love & Happiness", this time framed in a bubbling, dubby deep house context for the mellow heads to soak up. By way of contrast Russian Hackers get busy with "303", bringing some forthright jack to the table.

Review: Yam Who?'s Midnight Riot is back with another volume of funky, party starting edits, so come and get your fix. Aashton's "Pride" samples the diva vocals of you know who on this smooth and soulful number. Peza's "Black Gold" is pure classic disco, reminiscent of Salsoul, possibly? Fabiolous Barker's "The Paradise" has that retro and Balearic vibe that fans of labels like Love On The Rocks and Efficient Space will certainly dig. "The Jam" by Rayko is a re-edit of you guessed it: Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam".

Review: The "Coordinates" series is a fresh project from Freerotation regular and concept-embracing techno producer Aboutface. According to the detailed blurb provided by the label, each track "explores the aural terrain of two sets of location coordinates around the world". So, if you stuck the co-ordinates listed as the A-side title into Google Maps, it would point to the Chiapas region in Mexico where our hero encountered (and recorded the sound of) bats. On the resultant track, his ultrasound bat recordings rise and fall around a glistening, life-affirming workout inspired by both the Motor City and early UK ambient techno. Side B, whose title co-ordinates point to a location in Lincolnshire, is an ultra deep ambient house masterpiece laden with tropical rainforest noises and poignant melodies.

Subp Yao takes the closing honours with a spaced-out beat jam that sits somewhere between IG Culture and Roska. Shango-a-gogo.

From the tough rolling jack of "D Question" with its ghetto house samples and hypnotic chords that call to mind Binga's work on 50 Weapons not long ago. Review: There's plenty of hype swirling around this short-run debut from Londoners Adelphi Music Factory, with regular radio plays and appearances in a host of top DJs' set lists resulting in insatiable demand. It helps, of course, that "Javelin" is an absolute beast. Packed with energy, the A-side version sees them generate maximum sweatiness by working cut-up gospel vocal samples atop a loopy, full-throttle, techno-tempo disco-house groove. Honestly, it's one seriously heavyweight rub that's guaranteed to get dancefloors eating out of the palm of your hand. The B-side "Dub" is, if anything, even wilder and heavier, with the little-known outfit utilizing stretched-out, delay-laden vocal lifts and restless piano stabs over ten action-packed minutes.

Review: This is Adam Wickens' - aka ADMIN - first appearance for Kolour LTD, and we're happy to see the UK deep house producer continuing his steady path to maturity. This two-tracker is part of the label's 'LTD 10s' series, and this particular one is the fourth instalment; we love it not only for the quality that has graced the releases up till now, but also because we're fools for the ten inch format. "Reach For Love" sounds like it could be on Moodymann's Mahogani, a sensual house charmer complete with gorgeous piano keys and assembled with pure hypnotic delight. Side B's "You've Got Me" is similarly cool and laid-back, but the beat is speedier here, the percussion more floor-centric and the vocals sexier than ever. What a gorgeous little tip - cop it!

Review: More from Bristol-based party-starters Boogie Cafe, whose recent releases have impressively straddled the fine line between tooled-up re-edits and all-original productions. On the A-side, they've persuaded New York-based Bristolian DJ Nature to remix current Bristol resident Admin. The man formerly known as DJ Milo does a terrific job, too, offering up a trippy chunk of loose, breakeat-driven, deep house disco that boasts serious amounts of energy. On the reverse, Admin remixes Chezz's "Bossa", wrapping spacey synthesizer motifs and a killer synth bassline around a superbly fluid and crispy broken-house groove. It's a seriously soulful interpretation, and arguably the stronger of the two tracks.

Review: Adryiano Richter's trademark brand of dusty, sample-based deep house with strong funk/soul leanings has landed him a great reputation and releases on the likes of Heist, Soul Notes, his own Cestraw and current it label Shall Not Fade. This is actually his third release for the label in less than a year which is particularly impressive, we must say. The Dream With EP is possibly the German producer's finest offering yet; although probably only a child when the emerging sounds of French Touch came up in the late '90s, he's managed to recapture the zeitgeist incredibly well 20 years later. The funked-up soul power of "Got U Lovin" or the neon-lit rapture of the title track with their clever loops and crunchy SP1200 style drums would make legends like Cassius or Alan Braxe stand up and notice. The infectious DJ tool "All Damn Nite" calls to mind classic DJ Sneak or Phil Weeks.
