Bar 25 Music 125
  1. BONDI & ROTH - "Resize" (Kiki remix) (7:21)
  2. Danny Faber - "Hampi" (7:10)
  3. Phonique, Fairplay - "Zatar" (6:45)
  4. Martin Waslewski - "Dimensionen" (6:36)
Review: Berlin's Bar 25 was a real haven in the German party capital. It's reputation lives on strong in the label releases, the latest of which is a celebratory various artist affair. Kiki kicks things off with a heads down tech house stomper that undulates just enough to keep you in the groove.
Danny Faber's 'Hampi' is a headier affair, with suspensory synths keeping you locked on edge and then Phonique and Fairplay link for the more tribal and mysterious sounds of 'Zatar'. Closing out this party-ready EP is Martin Waslewski with the far-gazing chords and twinkling retro future keys of 'Dimensionen.'

Design Of The Body Sublime
Cat: SUNONYRLEGS. Rel: 16 Dec 20
  1. Design Of A Body Sublime (feat Fox) (6:08)
  2. Design Of An Eye Sublime (feat Fox) (5:52)
  3. Design Of A Lost Sublime (8:07)
Review: Given that both Call Super and Parris have fine track records and have successfully developed their own unique, off-kilter trademarks sounds, you'd expect this first collaborative EP to not only be very good, but also sidestep rhythmic and stylistic conventions. The suite of tracks certainly ticks those boxes, with opener 'Design of a Body Sublime', the first of two tracks featuring vocalist Fox, somehow managing to brilliant fuse elements of broken techno, vintage US garage, Afro-house and UK bass. The track's New Jersey garage influences come further to the fore on the similarly rhythmically off-kilter 'Design of an Eye Sublime', while closing cut 'Design of a Lost Sublime' is a more glitchy, tech-house influenced number rich in curious instrumental samples, 4/4 techno drums and wayward electronic sounds.

  6. Yu Su - "Brittney" (live mix) (8:27)
  7. Adam Pits - "Wind Tunnel" (5:07)
  8. DJ Sports - "Needs Dub" (4:11)
Review: Needs' commendable charity drive continues to bring forth the goods, both in terms of good causes and world class club music. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

Floating With The Current EP
Cat: OVNIE 002. Rel: 04 Oct 19
  1. Dan Piu - "Dusky & Puish" (7:05)
  2. Dan Piu - "Depresismatica" (5:28)
  3. Pohl - "Mello Phone" (5:26)
  4. Pohl - "Space In The Distance" (5:59)
Review: Ovine build on the momentum of their first EP with another new house offering that is beautifully deep. It features two tracks each from Dan Piu and Pohl, and they all hack back to dreamy Italo, classic Mr Fingers and the more pensive Chicago greats. "Depresismatica" is a real highlight with its meandering basslines and infinite cosmic horizons. "Mello Phone" offers more pixelated melodies and busy beats and "Space In The Distance" has the sort of freaky edges and dusty analog textures house lovers always fall for. Already, then, this is a label that is setting a high standard.

Gabriel (reissue) (limited white vinyl 12" 再出版)
Cat: LARV 019WHITE. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Gabriel (The Scroll mix) (6:59)
  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

  2. Phran - "Nexxxt" (4:49)
  3. DJ Handsome - "Pop Yo Pussy" (4:46)
  4. Traxman - "Get High" (3:00)
Review: Hot damn! Fresh Chicago booty action from legends of the genre on the fifth outing from the increasingly on-point Albion label! Here we have the legendary Dance Manian Dj Lil' Tal with "Questions", which sees the producer give up some of his classic ghetto sound with the usual bag of kinky vocal samples, while Phran's "Nexxxt" is rawer, nastier and more punishing while still keeping the vocal shots. Legend Traxman looses the plot on the bumpy "Get High", and the mysterious DJ Handsome sways and swings among bleeps on the aptly named "Pop Yo Pussy".

  3. Sleazy McQueen & Vinyl Addicted - "Hot To Trot" (5:41)
  4. Patchworks - "Batracien" (5:08)
  5. Le Blanc - "We Can Fly" (4:40)
Review: Detroit/Houston joint venture Kolour are back with another instalment in the Tale Of Two Cities series - and this is one serious all star cast if we've ever seen it! The creme de la creme of nu-disco appears here, starting with crazy Canadian Eddie C kicking off the A side with the sunny slo-mo antics of "All Time Freak", followed by the one and only Napoleon! Simon Mills throws down some more of his usual sexy and lo-slung grooves on "Over & Done". On the flip, current scene favourite - the Whiskey Disco boss Sleazy McQueen teams up with Vinyl Addicted on a seriously hot edit of an underground classic (to those that know) on "Hot To Trot" while Lyon's Patchworks hands in another similarly 'respectful edit' on the sultry late night blues of "Batracien". Finally they head down under (to Adelaide, Australia that is!) for Le Blanc's funked up disco house jam "We Can Fly".

  6. Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

Ten Years Of Phonica Sampler 1
  1. Joakim - "EAHR"
  2. Panoram - "Alpha Marmara"
  3. Psychemagik - "Triumph Of The Gods"
  4. The Draughtsman - "Fade To Green"
Review: As the famed London establishment toasts ten years in the game, the first vinyl sampler from their chunky two disc compilation is out, featuring four choice cuts for those who want the tunes on wax. First up Joakim is in a particularly soaring mood with "EHAR", all analogue tweakery and cyclical rhythms with a distinctly optimistic feel. Meanwhile Panoram is laying down a more jammed-out, jazzy flavour of downtempo on "Alpha Mamara", which Psychemagik follows on from with the sumptuous disco strings and Schifrin funk of "Triumph of The Gods". The Draughtsman meanwhile gets into a much more mechanical frame of mind with the last track, falling into a broken beat and letting rich harmonies slowly form from hushed tones, exercising great patience and subtlety in the process.

Out Of Order Vol 1
  1. JT Donaldson - "Got Myself Together"
  2. Maximiljan - "Son Of A"
  3. Professional Gigolo - "Professional Gigolo"
  4. Tuneon - "Hangin On"
Review: Proud Yorkshire label Hudd Traxx have been putting out a reliable stream of quality deep house since 2005, with artists like DJ Sneak, Rick Wade, Iron Curtis, Jay Bliss and Agnes just some of the many names to appear on the label. This 46th release features three debutants, while the fourth name, J.T. Donaldson, spearheads the release with a wishy-washy, bassline driven deep house vocal cut "Got Myself Together". Hudd Traxx provides Dusseldorf producer Maximiljan with his first physical release with the track "Son Of A" which merges the linear 909 house style of Norm Talley with smooth chords and cheeky vocals similar to the now defunct Swiss house duo Azuni. But most interesting for the label on this release, it's the two new names in Professional Gigolo and Tuneon that prove Hudd Traxx still know where to look when it comes to unearthing new and vibrant talent.

  4. Bartellow - "1001" (Skrillex Theme) (8:13)
  5. N-Gynn - "Jumanji" (5:59)
Review: Bobby Pleasure's Needs label continues to gather steam behind a message of togetherness, raising money for worth causes and trying to help those less fortunate in society. On this third instalment Lord Of The Isles leads the way with a typically romantic swoon of analogue bass and gorgeous 80s synth strings, while Mehmet Aslan lays down an earthly prowler powered by organic instrumentation. "Trust The Mountain" introduces Petwo Evans with a daring strain of broken electronica heavy on the crackling signal processing. Bartellow's "1001 (Skrillex Theme)" is a craft machine disco workout, and then N-Gynn takes things tropical with the exotic tones and bold drum machine hits of "Jumanji".

  3. Shee - "Me, You, Us" (6:53)
  4. Purple Ice - "Adeus" (7:02)
Review: According to the hype sheet we have to hand, the "Home Turf EP" is House of Disco's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. There's plenty to get the juices flowing throughout, from the bounding bounciness of LPM's rap-sampling disco-house cut "Get With It", to the impeccably warm and sun-kissed jazz-house vibes of Purple Ice's "Adeus". In between you'll find the rolling, synth-heavy warmth of Mix & Fairbanks' deliciously loved-up "Shergar's Revenge" and "Me, You, Us" by Shee, a chunky sample-house number full of swirling strings, looped guitar riffs, hazy chords and righteous spoken word samples.

  4. Bouhouz - "Fairy Tale"
Review: Tabernacle have an enviable instinct for visionary talents in the well-ploughed field of purist machine-powered techno and house, and their various artist releases can be a goldmine for new names to add to your watch list. So it goes on this latest transmission, kicking off with the dusty Chicago house styles of Models Over 18 before switching stance drastically to the splayed out tonal investigations of Paradize. Bitch & Bites are equally subversive, shirking dancefloor demands to apply classic techno motifs to a fractured but ultimately inviting strain of hardware-honed techno. That leaves it to Bouhouz to round the EP off with a gentle murmur of synth patterns carefully composed for a spiritual, subliminal end result.

Review: D. Tiffany presents the third installment in Planet Euphorique's Tiny Planet series, with four choice cuts. First up are Canadian life collaborators Mutually Feeling (Ariana Molly & Pulsum) with the slo-mo hardcore of 'Gutted Honeydew' accompanied by an evocative vocal. Next up, fellow Montrealer Pascale Project brings the totally loved-up vibe of 'Fly Zone' which also features a talented singer. Things take a much darker turn on the flip, with some of the label boss's cohorts from Vancouver taking charge. First is Jodie Overland with the mental overdrive of 'Are You Done Yet?' followed by local minimal wave/industrial duo Sigsaly going out all guns blazing on the hard dance mayhem of 'Carve'.

  4. 3c 273
Review: FXHE maintain their monthly heat emission for 2012, with label boss Omar S displaying all aspects of his production prowess (as well as skill for a humorous track titles) across four productions - one of which features the button bashing assistance of one Patrik Sjeren. There's something icily brilliant about the restrained "Income Tax Refund Dance" melding a dark piano riff with snapping 808 kicks and rippling lo fi rhythms which only further justifies the title of Omar S's killer 2011 LP. It's complemented by the far rowdier box jam "The White Castle Song" which jackhammers a simple yet highly flammable key riff over low rent percussion for FXHE's most potent ode to the perfect warehouse moment since the all conquering "Here's Your Trance..." Given the lack of additional info, we presume the Patrik Sjeren that produces the B Side "Untitled" track is the same Patrik Sjeren that released in the mid 90s under a multiplicity of aliases, and his contribution is every bit as incendiary as the track preceding it, whilst "3c 273" sees Omar S slip into pensive utopian electro mode with aplomb.

Review: Made in the winter and spring of 2018 in 'edenic' Altadena, California: P & D Records co-founder (and Suzanne Kraft collaborator) P Relief is back with the label's third release. The now Berlin based producer serves up dreamy and mesmerizing lo-fi house on the splendid Idlehour EP, as heard on terrific jams such as the wonderful opener "Club Fever" while the zeitgeist of early '90s IDM is captured stylishly on the mysterious "Broken Bell" as well as on the dreamy, ambient house "Lolli".

Udacha 12
Udacha 12 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: UDACHA 12. Rel: 04 Jul 16
  1. P-SH - "Wee See The Island"
  2. Fitz Ellarald - "Mappa Mundi"
  3. P-SH - "Zsyamono's Odo Message From Flaming Trixx"
  4. Fitz Ellarald - "Simulacre Uno"
Review: Since 2012, Russia's Udacha label has been providing us with consistently excellent levels of grainy deep house, a particular strand of the genre that easily moulds into something altogether more ethereal and abstract. Newcomer P-SH constructs a beatless sway of placid harmonics on "Wee See The Island", followed by the minimal tribal rattle of percussion called "Mappa Mundi" by Fitz Ellarald. On the flip, "Zsyamono's Odo Message From Flaming Trixx" is hard to describe because of its constantly shifting bundle of sounds and sonics, and "Sumlacre Uno" by Ellarald ties thigns off with a beatless, spaced-out sway powered by a subtle collection of field recordings. Weird and wonderful - TIP!

The Loneliness Your Love Destroys
The Loneliness Your Love Destroys (limited 12" + insert)
Cat: PWF 011. Rel: 02 Dec 15
  1. When The Shades Open (7:38)
  2. The Loneliness Your Love Destroys (5:02)
  3. Into The Night (7:09)
Review: It's been some two years since Pacific Horizons last cast their spell on us with some original material, though Pacific Wizard Foundation did seek out a diverse range of contemporaries to delve into their discography for last year's self-explanatory Remix EP. The Balearic gods have answered the calls and ushered in a fresh batch of Pacific Horizons goodness to broaden your own mental horizons. Still wonderfully diverse in their outlook, the three tracks on Loneliness Destroys range from the ragged yet pensive box jam work out of "When The Shades Open" to the downbeat wave "The Loneliness Your Love Destroys" which inspired the record's title. Closer "Into The Night" veers off into twilight Balearic ballad territory.

Heaven Machine
Cat: ZKR 006. Rel: 23 May 18
  1. Heaven Machine (feat Arvild J Baud) (8:02)
  2. Shuffled (5:59)
  3. Lochergut (7:01)
  4. Father (5:11)
Review: Lush deep house with a dash of balearica on the label arm of Switzerland's respected Zukunft Club, following up some great releases by Jimi Jules and Look Like. The grooves this time come courtesy of Pacifica. Comprised of Balint Dobozi and Domenico Ferrari, they follow up a couple of great releases on local imprint Drumpoet Community - and this further refines their trademark sound. "Heaven Machine" is made up of all the right elements: steady beats, heavy bass lines, polyrhythmic synth arpeggios as well as some vocal and electric guitar additions. From the pop-inflected island dream of the title track that features some smooth vocals by one Arvild J Baud, the hypnotic and ethereal groove excursion of "Lochergut" right through to the melancholic yet bittersweet ambient bliss of "Father" - this is a fine release indeed

Codex
Codex (140 gram transparent vinyl 12")
Cat: HOTHAUS 001. Rel: 18 May 15
  1. Codex (5:12)
  2. NRG (5:08)
Review: Young East London producer Sam 'Palace' Walker has been part of DJ Haus's trusted inner circle for some time, having released on both Unknown 2 The Unknown and Hot Haus Records. Here he unreleased two more retro-futurist house gems - the kind of kaleidoscopic, rave-inspired tracks that evoke memories of early '90s pirate radio stations and illegal parties full of smiling dancers in bad long sleeve t-shirts. Choose between the bouncy stabs, hazy vocal cuts, bleep-era bass and snappy, cheap-sounding beats of "Codex", and "NRG", a piano-laden banger that makes great use of some familiar samples that were once a staple of breakbeat hardcore and bouncy house records. Oh, and the unmistakable rhythmic swing of UK garage.
