  1. Strana Nepuganykh (7:20)
  2. Poceluy (5:38)
  3. Poi! (7:54)
  4. Ovosl Eendelsop (4:13)
Review: The long lost electronic sounds of Soviet-era Russia is what this young but already vital new label focusses on with its edits. The first few volumes have serve up some real treats and volume four is no such, either. 'Strana Nepuganykh' is a blissful post-rave sound with nice floaty breakbeats and pensive chords running throughout the mix. 'Poceluy' is more direct, with old school stabs and a busier, funkier break overlaid by some nice jazzy chords. There is a celestial charm to the bright white chords of 'Poi!' and then things get a little deeper on 'Ovosl Eendelsop,' which sounds like 90s Roni Size doing house music.

  1. Your Love (feat Leroy Burgess) (6:48)

  3. Soul Minimal (Stephan Hoellermann remix) (6:23)
  4. My House (Ron Trent & Chez Damier mix) (7:04)
Review: The Master Jams label has been active for five years now, but this is only its fourth release. And mores the pity to be honest because they always serve real deal house music direct from the source in the United States. They don't come much more revered than Chez Damier, the former Prescription man turned Balance label boss. His house sound is deep, soulful, perfect. The four cuts here show that with vocal stunner 'Your Love' melting your heart, the DJ Aly dub making things more club ready then a Stephan Hoellermann remix and Ron Trent & Chez remix closing out the flip with two lovely house jams.

  2. Forever Monna (Deep mix) (6:32)
  3. Forever Monna (Ron & Chez remastered mix) (4:46)
  4. Forever Monna (Rex club mix) (6:53)
Review: Chez Damier and Stacey Pullen's 'Forever Monna' is a stone-cold US house classic. It gets reissued every few years and never disappoints. A perennial favourite in DJ sets, this 2021 edition includes the original as well as a couple of different mixes. It's the firefly-like lead synths that stand it apart - they leave long tails in their wake and fill you with joy as the simple but effective, deep yet driving drums power things along below. As well as Deep Mix that brings the toms and congas front and centre, Ron & Chez's remastered mix-ups the pace and sense of shuffle, then a rex Club mix gets booty shaking with its big, busted bass and chunky tribal drums.

  4. Wave Flow (Lauren Lo Sung remix) (5:33)
Review: A new one on Lauren Lo Sung's Lolife label here by Rutilance chief DJ Steaw, featuring four deep and emotive house jams. It's called Pipe Fantasy and opens up with the pounding power house of 'In This World' followed by the ethereal dub techno influence of 'Wave Flow' which will have you truly mesmerised. On the second side, we have some good old fashioned Windy City inspired deepness of the title track, which receives a ripping remix by label chief Lo Sung - whose swing-fuelled and groovy rework is sure to fire up the dancefloor.

  1. The Wind As It Took Her (6:42)
  2. A Far Reaching Light (6:54)
  3. The Mirror (8:52)
Review: It feels like dance music itself is on permanent vacation right now so it seems apt to be listening to tunes from a label that has long been using that name. This time out, Fort Romeau returns to Permanent Vacation after an EP here earlier in the year, this time with three more psychedelic dance floor explorations. 'The Wind As It Took Her' kicks off with a sleek and futuristic house sound run through with warped bass, and the melodic overtones continue through the spacious and roomy 'A Far Reaching Light.' The deepest and nubbiest of the lot is closer 'The Mirror' which will get you in a trance.

Ron Hardy #45
Cat: RDY 4512. Rel: 28 Sep 21
  1. Jump St Man - "B-Cause" (5:36)
  2. Scrappy - "Freeze" (8:41)
  3. Nimrod - "Acid Haze" (11:03)
Review: 12 years after it first graced record stores, the popular Ron Hardy series of 12" singles showcasing tracks played, made or re-edited by the late, great Chicagoan DJ is still going strong. Volume 45 boasts some genuine gems, too, starting with Jump Street Man's 1987 NYC deep house gem 'B-Cause'. Rich in dreamy chords, memorable piano riffs and classic early house drums, it's one of the most loved-up club tracks ever made. Elsewhere, it's proper Windy City acid all the way, as Scrappy's funky, mind-mangling 'Freeze' is followed by an extended, double-length re-edit of Nimrod's 1988 jam 'Acid Haze'. We suspect this may be Hardy's own version, rescued from a reel-to-reel tape, but the label doesn't explicitly say that.

  1. Shuto Expressway (5:23)
  2. Anti-Lag (4:41)
  3. Rhythm Is Key (5:03)
  4. Bad Habits (6:13)
Review: We're pretty sure all the new school deep house heads will be excited about this new one here by Harrison BDP for London's Breaks 'N' Pieces, following up great ones by DJ Crisp and Stones Taro. It's titled Rhythm Is Key and features the splintered rhythms of the emotive opening cut 'Shuto Expressway', then 'Anti-Lag' follows in suit but taking a much darker turn down a left hand path. Over on the flip, we have some very UK flava on the "groovy" steppa that is the title track and ending with awesome nice 303 acid squelch on the hypnotising dub techno cut 'Bad Habits'.

  3. Florist - "Blacky" (5:59)
  4. Christian Jay & Crump - "GG3" (7:14)
Review: Bristol's Banoffee Pies are back with their 11th edition. But as far it goes musically: this certainty ain't Bristol! Starting out with the smoothly reduced tendencies of local lad Christian Jay's "Rhotic" which sounds inspired by the sounds of Trelik, there's more of the same (albeit much dubbier and smoked out) on "Starry Nite Life" courtesy of Utrecht's Larry de Kat; very paranoid afterhour vibes on this one! On the flip we've got some more dubbed out fare courtesy of Christian Jay, again, who enlists a bit of help from Crump on the rusty and dust coated "GG3". All Caps artist Florist adds a touch of Vancouver to proceedings with the squelchy DJ tool "Blacky."

  4. Low Tape - "SK8" (4:57)
  5. Low Tape - "Untitled 15" (3:38)
  6. ROWVN - "BNKRS" (5:25)
Review: Prague based label Neo Violence releases music from all over the world and with no genre restrictions. Or as they claim "simply anything good from house, techno, electro, acid or bass music" in addition to running a bunch of club nights in their fair city and we salute them. On their second label sampler, we get treated to a bunch of gnarly and jackin' lo-fi grooves from the current mainstays of the label roster. On the A side, there's some ethereal house music from Jupiter Jax (100% Silk/Opal Tapes) with both "Midnight Drive" and "Just How U Do" reminiscent of Larry Heard's evocative deepness from his Trackmode days in the early noughties. Meanwhile, New York City's Baltra stays on the same retro tip; Windy City style (but circa '86 this time) with the raw and emotive "Through The Seams". On the flip, Russia's Low Tape comes up with some worthy additions, but for our money it's all about the woozy, dust covered sultriness of "Untitled 15". Finally Cologne's ROWVN serves up "BNKRS" (naturally) where he goes for that overdriven and tape saturated retro house vibe of Lobster Theremin.

  1. Laika (6:19)
  2. Laika (Domenico Rosa remix) (7:12)
  3. No Chill (6:19)
  4. Space Birds (7:50)
Review: Chicago legend Chez Damier has continued to gain momentum through his Balance Records imprint over recent years, but his Inner Balance offshoot has been used primarily to release music by new, younger talent of which he approves of. If you do make it on that list, you should be very proud of yourself. This is the label's fourth outing so far, and the unknown Keumel steps into the limelight four choice cuts, all coated in a warm, US house kind of glow. The opener "Laika" is a bubbling house groover with an acid-driven bassline running through its nervous system, remixed and stretched further out into hyperspace by Imprints co-boss Domenico Rosa. "No Chill" kicks off the flip with a quirky, upbeat groove that manages to slice and dice its percussion through a deep layer of electronic goodness, while "Space Birds" goes for the classic deep house approach to tie this neat little EP off in the finest of styles.

Review: DJ Tennis's Life And Death label welcomes Israeli artist Kino Todo for a new EP that perfect fit's the imprint's MO. That is to say this is electronic music with rich synth craft and plenty of guitar additions that make it psyched out and trippy as well as functional for the club. 'Paradox' is an unhinged drum workout and 'Vocus Pocus' manages to be rugged and retro yet also sleek and new at the same time. Todo's multicultural sounds on Moscoman's Disco Halal and Red Axes's Garzen labels, and now this transmission, sure are some of the most standout cuts of recent times.

Review: Given their shared musical heritage - both are members of the extended Firecracker Recordings crew - it's perhaps something of a surprise to find that Face The Facts marks the first serious collaboration between Linkwood and Gav 'Fudge Fingaz' Sutherland AKA Other Lands. It's less surprising that the album is really, really good. Touching on warming synth-boogie, head-nodding downtempo jams, mutant beatdown, Balearic beats, sunset-ready soundscapes and warming analogue deep house, the 13-track set is notable for the pair's extensive use of dusty old drum machines, tactile instrumentation (think smooth Rhodes solos, languid guitar solos and blissed-out synths) and Sutherland's hazy, sometimes seductive singing voice.

Review: Kelly Lee Owens makes her anticipated return with her second album, building on the promise of her self-titled debut with another assured expedition in the fruitful realm between melancholic pop and melodic, widescreen techno. There's a renewed energy and purpose second time around, with bolder song structures emerging around Owens' more forthright vocals. Tracks like "On" certainly tug at the heartstrings, but there's also space for outright dancefloor cuts like the wired mechanical thrust of "Melt!". Coming on like a confident step forward from her strong starting position, Inner Song sees Kelly Lee Owens stepping into a role as a fully-fledged pop artist with serious production chops, and making it all her own.

  1. Manceingelani - "Vana Vasesi" (Theo Parrish remix)
  2. Zinja Hlungwani - "Ntombi Ya Mugaza" (Burnt Friedman remix)
Review: Honest Jon's continued endeavours to choose the interesting remix artists to tackle the high BPM joys of their Shangaan Electro compilation sees them turn to that venerable Detroit magician and erstwhile Wu Tang Clan member Theo Parrish. The Sound Signature boss comes through with a masterful thirteen minute plus rewiring of Mancingelani's "Vana Vasesi" which retains the thunderous tempo and brilliantly chaotic rhythms yet instils the track with a woozy, intoxicating swing via the twisting synth waves. Complementing this, iconic German producer Burnt Friedman turns in a remix of "Ntombi Ya Mugaza" by Zinja Hlungwani which is far less frenetic but no less enjoyable, flipping the track in a dub wise style with off kilter drum programming, spine tingling keys and staggered vocal affectations.

He serves up an impressive five tracker here titled Lounge Excursion, which features the dusty, jazzy Chi-town style of deepness of 'Knock Jazz' with its rich string section, there's also the low slung groove attack of 'Party People' and the glassy-eyed and bittersweet tones of 'C Jazz Funk'. Welcome back Mr Gow!

Review: We've heard plenty about the underground electronic music scenes in Napoli, Milan and Rome, but not so much about the new wave of deep house and broken beat producers currently emerging from Bologna. This EP from Bristol's Boogie Cafe Records tries to put the record straight by bringing together a quartet of cuts from some of the city's fast-rising producers. Check first the insanely funky, broken house brilliance of Sam Ruffilo's blues-sampling "U Make Me Sing", before bathing in the jazzy solos, drowsy male vocals and jazz-funk-flecked cheekiness of D'Arabia's "Straight Outta Fire". Brine takes over on the flip, first joining forces with Ruffilo on the revivalist '90s NJ garage flex of "Request Line", before going solo on the ultra-deep, woozy and sun-kissed deep house warmth of "Star Chaser".

Trust EP
Trust EP (12")
Cat: TRST 001. Rel: 20 Aug 21
  1. Trust (5:45)
  2. Track 2 (6:01)
  3. Drop The Bass (6:08)
  4. La Burbuja (6:35)
Review: After a couple of years of breaking through and blowing up as a DJ, Saoirse now makes the logical next step and starts her own new label TRUST. She takes charge of the first EP in blistering fashion with four tracks of physical house and techno. The title track kicks off with high speed and ragged electro immediately sweeping you off your feet. 'Track 2' is punchy tech-house business with psychedelic melodies and neck-snapping bite, 'Drop The Bass' is a throwback banger that pulls no punches and 'La Burbuja' is a dark warehouse sound with mysterious leads. This is as versatile as it is vital for DJs wanting to make an impact.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing and minor split on outer sleeve, also the record has very light surface marks, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

REPRESS ALERT LIMITED 180 GRAM VINYL!: Sushitech toast 15 years with a plush new edition of one of the label's classic albums. Delano Smith hit a high watermark with An Odyssey when he first dropped it in 2012, and it still sounds utterly flawless as a shining example of Detroit house. From the slinky funk of 'Survival' to the minimalist dub inflections of 'Trust In Someone', this is the positively classy end of the club music spectrum. At all times a sturdy rhythm section carries the tune, whether it be the shuffling hats of 'Midnight Hours' or the shimmering jack of 'No Turning Back', but the real prize here is the seductive mood Smith weaves throughout all 11 tracks. Looped up and hypnotic, but with each piece telling its own unique story, this is a masterclass in deepest house music.

Review: Elina Shorokhova aka Soela is a multi-talented artist hailing from southern Russia who now calls Berlin her home. It is there where she continues to build her presence in the community through her live and DJ sets, alongside documenting the local scene and artists through her lens as a photographer. Following up an impressive run of releases on the likes of E-Beamz, Lost Palms and Australia's Red Ember, Shorokhova returns with four evocative tracks on the ever reliable Kompakt imprint. From the sensual breakbeat driven progressive house vibe of "Lily", soothing and sensual deep house for the late night on "Close Your Eyes" and the slinky and hypnotic tech hose of "White Becomes Black" - we have only seen the start of Shorokhova's blossoming and promising career.

Review: For deep house diggers, Soichi Terada has long been a source of inspiration. While he's still active, it's the early '90s material he released on the Far East Recordings label - an imprint he founded soon after his graduation in 1990 - that most excites. Following the 2014 re-release of his sublime hook-up with Nami Shimada, "Sunshower", Rush Hour has decided to put together this excellent retrospective. Compiled by self-confessed fan Hunee, Sounds From The Far East contains a mixture of hard-to-find Terada originals, collaborations, and tracks by fellow Far East Recordings artist Shinichiro Yokota, all in the label's trademark melody-rich, evocative deep house style.
