Drums #1
Drums #1 (12")
Cat: FIT 004. Rel: 22 Nov 11
  1. Part 1
  2. Part 2
Review: ** FIT REPRESS ** Naturally for a producer who prefers to remain anonymous and call themselves A Drummer From Detroit and name their debut EP Drums, both tracks here veer into dextrously percussive house territory. Amidst the dizzying, jazz influenced rattle of Shake Shakir style rhythms that characterise the A Side workout our erstwhile protagonist weaves in desperate vocal strains and overtly dramatic piano and horn stabs which only serve to increase the panic inducing pace. The flipside treatment is slightly slower in its execution, yet increases the jazz funk melodic elements which make it the less a hectic and more involving production.

  4. Acoustic Cut
Review: After a successful debut release with Untitled Gear, Croatian label continues their journey through fields and forests. Still exploring the Russian Federation, only this time they hired Udacha's honcho and main protagonist A5. Record kicks off with 'Fantasy'. A dreamy kalimba piece which eventually evolves into a deep house track and could be described as a soundtrack from your latest dream while 'Raw Abstractionism' doesn't disappoint it's name. On the flip side we are introduced to the afro banger 'Torri Wowo' which feels almost like driving through safari on a truck. 'Acoustic Cut' calms things down and brings us to an end with a clear message.

  2. Fluid (4:29)

  4. Cheremushki Groove (The Cyclist remix) (6:53)
Review: Having lurked in the tape scene for many moons, AL-90 brings his dishevelled house sound to the dancefloor with this single for Tape Throb. Despite the name of the label, this is in fact destined for vinyl, and leads with the fuzzy yet funky "Cheremushki Groove", assisted in the process by Monokle. There's a whiff of Gerry Read's dusty production values present on "Fluid", but AL-90 seems locked into a more discernible beat. That changes on "Cataract" with its degraded hardcore breaks drowning under a sea of unforgiving processing, while Tape Throb label boss The Cyclist is an appropriate choice of remixer to finish the record with a crunchy yet focused version of "Cheremushki Groove".

Review: For the first time VIBRAPHONE RECORDS is releasing a record by an artist other than THE TRUE UNDERGROUND SOUND OF ROME. For such an exclusive event there could have not been a better choice than Italian DJ/PRODUCER, Nick Anthony SIMONCINO. For the production of this record, ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO (Sunset Islands) Simoncino uses a selection of strictly old school analog synthesizers, and drum machines, which takes you on a charming magical journey through the Mediterranean Sea with pulsating minimal deep bass lines, oneiric harmonic textures, exotic tom tom patterns, hypnotic sexy and catchy grove beats. ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO is a record that connects and combines the essential elements and spirit of deep house music along with providing its visionary future...

Review: Featuring the collective talents of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Sondorom and Shonky, it's little surprise the Apollonia project has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with in house music over the past two years. Less a production unit, more an excellent DJ tag team and label collective, Apollonia output to date has been the sole Trinidad 12" issued through their eponymous label back in 2013. A debut album then is something of an ambitious move, yet Tour a Tour demonstrates the Parisian trio are more than up to the task. Said to be inspired by their unified approach to Djing, the album consists of 13 tracks that ramp up the intensity deftly in a manner to reflect a DJ mix. French legends Phillip Zdar and Alexkid lend their considered touch to proceedings throughout.

Review: Berlin deep house heroes Cinthie and Stevn Aint Leavn are back on their ever reliable Beste Modus imprint for its ninth edition and they aren't messing around on this one. Quality classic house vibes all the way - a timeless Windy City vibe dominates the A side courtesy of Cinthie, who serves up the sultry and swing-fuelled late night groover "Everything I Say" before taking it back to '94 with the dusty and soulful "Good For You & Me". On the flip, Stevn Aint Leavn is in fine form, too, particularly on the moody and bass-driven back room dub "Quins".

Review: Will Saul's labour of love finally makes its first appearance with this single for !K7, which sees the producer delving into a synth-pop blend that equally champions his house roots, with a little help from Scuba and Charlene Soraia's vocals. As well as the sultry tones of the original, there's plenty of premier league remix action to be enjoyed on this EP, with George Fitzgerald dropping a lean tech house pumper. Scuba meanwhile brings his own "Dub Of Doom" version that builds on a harmonious swell of melancholy, ultimately leading to a glorious peak time drop. Hercules & Love Affair bring the spiciest mix with their acidic version letting a wonderfully wielded 303 lead the way alongside some deadly organ business.

Review: Dan Curtin's musical quest began in early 1990s Cleveland and continues today in Berlin, where the pioneering DJ and producer carries on defying conventions and pushing boundaries.
Curtin's discography dates back to 1992, with his first releases for Detroit's 33RPM Records and Belgium's Buzz Records. He soon inked his own production hub, Metamorphic Recordings. Curtin's unwillingness to restrict himself to a singular style has been instrumental to releases like his albums Silicon Dawn, Web Of Life and Art & Science on Peacefrog Records, and work for further influential imprints such as Strictly Rhythm and Sublime.

Now he's elaborating his impressive discography yet again with an uplifting yet pumping EP for Turquoise Blue Recordings. A label that was founded to release house music that's deep, groovy and underground.
Featuring 3 originals and oneAnalogue Cops Remix, it's clear that Dan Curtin and Turquoise Blue Recordings make a good team.

Review: Earlier this year, Dan Snaith raised a few eyebrows by releasing a FabricLive mix that was almost entirely made up of previously unheard Daphni productions. It's some of those 19 productions, presented in extended and fully-fledged form, that make up the bulk of Joli Mai, Snaith's second Daphni full-length. It's a far more varied and evocative set than its largely dark, percussion-heavy predecessor, variously touching on dreamy, head-in-the-clouds late night house, acid-fired, off-kilter dancefloor psychedelia, bustling Afro-house fusion, stripped-back dub disco, revivalist rave thumpers and, in the case of stunning closer "Life is What You Make It", languid instrumental bliss.

Review: Well Cut Records return with another deluxe vinyl release with Dubble D presenting under his irrepressable "Moodymanc" monniker. Side A opens with "Comfort Me", a deep and gritty sounding soulful jam, followed by a 're-touch' of "War and Peace", a deep and dirty disco dance floor monster which has done serious damage in the past. Luke Solomun opens side B with his "Love and Death re-make", toughening up the drums and adding some analogue twists to take the energy levels up to the point of frenzy! The record closes with "Hashtag", a no nonsense, tough Chicago inspired groove which plays backdrop to a conversation between Snoop Dog and G Unit about the music game today which we thought said a lot about the state of play in House music today! A "beatapella" is an addition to the digital version of the release for those DJs who want to get more creative with the message!

He delivers a blistering 3 track acid tinged ep which kicks off with "Block Parties (Dark Entry)", a driving acid bassline with a great vocal layered on top. Review: Japanese artist Sunao Gonno's idiosyncratic sound has appeared on labels such as Endless Flight, International Feel and Beats In Space over the years, where he's dabbled in shoegaze, kosmische and psychedelia as heard on 2015's breathtaking "Remember The Life Is Beautiful" or on last year's contemporary jazz outing "In Circles" with Kazuhiko Masumura. An accomplished DJ also, he's no stranger to Berlin's Panorama Bar, where Nick Hoppner (Touch From A Distance) has long held a residency. The two artists collaborate for the first time on "Lost", featuring three sublime sonic journeys: go deep into the exotic on "Bangalore" with its world music influence, or chill to the vivid downbeat tones of "Love Lost" until "Start Trying" returns to the program with its neon-lit aesthetic plus breakbeats reminiscent of the rave era.

Review: From Moods & Grooves to Sistrum, Brian Harden has served up more than enough soulful, synth-led house and techno in his time. It's just the kind of style that suits the mood on D3, and so the label has picked up his essential "Chicago To Detroit" jam and called upon a fine selection of remixers to rework the track. First up is Byron The Aquarius, who drops some expressive broken beat drums into the mix to spar with the illustrious melodic tones to great effect. Meanwhile the label boss Brian gets busy with a classic, straight-up adaptation on his "Chicago Sur Seine Mix" before Patrice Scott opts for an energised variation with poignant new Rhodes-esque keys floating on top.

Review: London's irrepressible Lobster Theremin label launches its new offshoot, Distant Hawaii, with Moods & Grooves signee Hidden Spheres. The mood is summery and the vibes are housey; "Waiting" kicks things into motion with a pseudo tribal beat and some lovely deep house action, while "Upsn Downs" goes a little off-kilter thanks to its rattling percussion samples and sporadic beat. On the flip, "Be A Man" enters the Detroit house territories thanks to its gorgeous pads and lo-fi vocal samples, and "Bill Loves You" chuck groovy jazz instrumentation over a slick groove. Noice!

Geek Emotions (remixes)
Cat: HC 001. Rel: 16 Aug 12
  1. Geek Emotions (Ajukaja remix)
  2. Geek Emotions (Gerry Read remix)
Review: One of the more recent additions to Berlin's transplanted house and techno community, Danny Berman aka Red Rack Em has been busy at work on his debut album as Hot Coins, slated for release later this year under the Geek Emotions title. As a taster, Gerry Read and Estonian "house not house" producer Ajukaja are called on to remix the title track, and with no available clue as to the original sound, all we can do is focus on the results. Last seen working with his country's most famous export in Maria Minerva and notable for plenty of work under his real name Raul Saaremets, Ajukaja calls shotgun with a woozily intoxicating rendition that seemingly breaks down all the original elements into a thickly satisfying groove that drives ever forward with infinite momentum while remaining steadfastly on the outside of traditional house sounds. It's matched by Gerry Read's remix which shows the youngster is willing and able to embrace real moments of sonic beauty as well as unrelenting brutality. There are still unnerving elements at play, such as the out of time plucked samples and gurgling analogue bass line that stays menacingly out of shot, yet there is also the most charming of fogged out string arrangements that repeatedly appears throughout before finally breaking through and releasing its full emotive range.

Hotly tipped duo, Invisible Menders, made up of outstanding DJ Jane Fitz and thus far underrated producer Dom Ahtuam contribute a stunning Balearic bass-heavy house cut "Fifth Time Lucky". Review: Now this is proper house music from the Noble Square label. Crate-digging veteran Volcon aka Isoul8 has linked with Diamond Dancer and enlisted the lush guitar of Piranahead to cook up a fantastically deep and effusive track that overflows with soul and spirituality, while the gentle vocals add another layer of cool. On the flip side, June Jazzin comes just as correct with a timeless broken beat track that glows thanks to the jazzy keys and bendy chords that light it up. Loungey yet heady, it's as good as it gets, frankly, and will swell your heart in two different but equally impactful ways.

Review: Studio K7’s long running mix series, DJ-Kicks, continues with an instalment from NYC disco head Juan Maclean (former hosts include the likes of Hot Chip, Booka Shade and Henrik Schwarz). Sculpted with a combination of classic tracks and more recent cuts, the mix displays a diverse collection of songs that are more focused on the club than past mixes.

Although Maclean is mostly known for his productions and live performances, he is also a DJ of some repute and his inclusion in the series is no surprise. What is somewhat intriguing, however, is his decision to make a straight up house mix. Over the running time of seventy-two minutes, Maclean keeps the energy levels high as his unleashes his collection of records meant for the club. Selecting from a rich tradition of house music with a disco twist, he includes a combination of classic tracks like Rick Wilhite’s "Get On Up" (remixed by fellow house don Theo Parrish) and recent disco cuts from the likes of Shit Robot, Still Going and 6th Borough Project.

The mix has a free flowing feel throughout due to Maclean’s raw method of producing: the whole compilation was mixed live using only two turntables, a couple of filters and a tape delay, placing the emphasis squarely on the sprit and excitement of the mix as opposed to its sound.

Review: Soon London's SlothBoogie crew will release "Dancing With Friends", a celebratory compilation marking the blog-turned-label's 10th year in operation. This sampler 12" showcases a quartet of cuts from the forthcoming compilation, which is entirely made up of previously unheard productions. Our pick of the bunch is Kassian's fantastically driving and surprisingly low-slung disco-house stomper "Warehouse Discotheque", which more than lives up to its name, though the lo-fi piano-house loop-funk of Leatherette's "Your Love" pushes it close. Elsewhere, Joe Cleen's contribution is a deliciously daring fusion of jazz-funk flourishes and organic deep house jauntiness, while Felipe Gordon's "Deep Like The Hole We Live In" is a woozy skip through hybrid nu-disco/deep house territory.

  2. Toot Sweet
  3. Self Inflicted
Review: Jaime "lhas" read follows up last years push 2 shove with 3 brand new tracks for another great release. "If it takes all night" is a get down and boogie journey of melodies and groove. "Toot sweet" is a workout on 80's drums and b boy bass. "Self inflicted" ends the EP with some serious live synth action to drift away on.....music with love in Jaime's 20th year of releasing music.

Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

When The Morning Comes
Cat: NSRVINYL 011. Rel: 28 Nov 19
  1. When The Morning Comes (7:57)
  2. When The Morning Comes (instrumental) (8:33)
  3. When The Morning Comes (Kyle Hall & Amp Fiddler remix) (9:41)
Review: Whether making musically rich deep hazy or hazy, pitched-down beatdown jams, Alton Miller rarely gets it wrong - as is proved by the impressive number of labels queuing up to sign singles from the veteran Detroit producer. The latest is Noble Square, a fine imprint run by Chicagoan heavyweight Ricardo Miranda. Even by Miller's standards, "When The Morning Comes" is extra-special, featuring as it does distinctive vocals from Amp Fiddler and extra percussion programming by Kyle Hall. The trio's slick, smooth and groovy original version comes accompanied by a similarly tasty instrumental mix and a wonderfully woozy and jazzy remix by Fiddler and Hall that's arguably even better than the inspired A-side mix.

  6. Sunny & Blue (4:17)
Review: Mr Yo So hails from Poland and makes his way to Father & Son Records & Tapes for a solo EP having previously appeared on Maciek Sienkiewicz's label as part of a compilation two years ago. Mr Yo So's sound is a wide-ranging technicolour wonderland laden with expressive synths and ever-evolving compositional heft that draws on a wide range of influences to make a very distinctive end result. "Freetual" works around digi-dub motifs and warm lead lines, while "The Road To The Forest" comes on like a neo-classical composition. "Delicious" has a noirish 70s funk tone at its core, and "Louis I Know (Part II)" takes a slow and smooth approach. There's never a dull moment on Delicious, that's for certain.

I Rise (Francois K Remixes) (12") (1 per customer)

  1. I Rise (Francois K Journey vocal) (11:20)
  2. I Rise (Francois K dub) (7:36)
  3. I Rise (Francois K bonus beats) (3:40)
Review: Earlier in the year, U.S disco and house legend Danny Krivit took his scalpel to Emilie Nana's super single "I Rise", a warm and woozy fusion of shuffling beats, visions of Shiva chords, blissful electronic melodies and stylish spoken word vocals. Now Compost has turned the track over to another bona fide U.S legend, Wave Music man and former Prelude remixer Francois Kevorkian. He does a superb job, re-casting Nana's original as a constantly building cosmic house epic on his superb, near 12-minute "Journey Vocal" version. His subtle percussive changes and ear for atmosphere come to the fore on the suitably trippy and head-in-the-clouds dancefloor Dub, while the "Bonus Beats" take sees him layering up the drums and effects with incredibly impressive results.
