  1. Time Blur (8:09)
  2. Mon Mon (8:09)
  3. Run The Sun (7:59)
  4. Lunar (8:17)
Review: Lithuanian drummer Marijus Aleksa is cutting his teeth into house and tech with this solo debut via the YAM Recordings imprint, out of London, after having come to prominence thanks to his involvement in various groups, namely Contra Jazz, Mock?no Nuclear and Saga. As such, these four tracks present a delightfully jazzy strain of house music, starting with the electro-minded groove of "Time Blur" and followed closely by the more bumpy, more jovial sounds of "Mon Mon". Over on the flip, "Run The Sun" breaks the groove and dissipates into a much more loungy sort of flex, full of haze and mystery, while "Lunar" picks up the tempo and launches a minimalistic, drum-led pseudo-house rhythm with a distinctly organic aesthetic.

  1. Conversation (7:29)
  2. This Is The Place (5:51)
  3. From The Heart (8:08)
  4. Conversation (Awanto 3 remix) (9:23)
Review: Swiss trio Alma Negra can do no wrong in our eyes, with their recent outing on Lumberjacks in Hell being one of that label's strongest releases to date (which, given its strong track record, is high praise indeed). This four-tracker on Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings is packed full of dancefloor treats, too. Choose between the spacey deep house/heavily percussion Afro-house fusion of title track "Conversation", the hybrid boogie/dreamy deep house bliss of "This Is The Place" and the warm and woozy, percussion-rich deep house loop-funk of B-side opener "From The Heart". Fittingly, "Conversation" is given a going over by fellow percussion enthusiast Awanto 3, whose trippy remix adds a low-slung jazz bassline, wonky vocoder vocals and just the right amount of wayward electronics.

  1. Open Your Head (5:58)
  2. EEYE (5:01)
  3. Common (5:30)
  4. People, Places, Things In Spaces (6:48)
Review: Take a listen to the four cuts that make up Jackson Almond's WotNot Music debut, "Open Your Head", and you'll hear a myriad of influences and musical reference points. That the DJ/producer has managed to get them to compliment each other is particularly impressive. Check, for example, the jaunty U.S garage/jazz-funk/broken beat/Afro-house fusion of "EEYE", for starters, or the sparkling opener "Open Your Head", where glistening guitars and marimba style melodies ride a rubbery synth bassline and rich, life-affirming chords. Almond's love of layered percussion is once again evident on the piano-sporting, sun-kissed deep house shuffle of "Common", while "People, Places, Things in Spaces" sees him pepper a jazzy, off-kilter deep house groove with the kind of spacey jazz-funk synths that were once a hallmark of Herbie Hancock albums.

Rebirth EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")

  2. Love Changes (feat Evan - Malik Rebirth 2 mix) (8:12)
  3. I Am (feat Howard Wazeerud-Din II - instrumental) (7:18)
Review: The "Rebirth EP" is former Detroit Beatdown originator Malik Alston's first vinyl excursion in seven years, and it is nothing short of magical. The biggest treat is A-side "I Am (Vocal Mix)", a sublime chunk of undulating, soft-touch Motor City deep house soul rich in Afro-tinged percussion provided by Craig Huckaby, lilting brass lines laid down by Hardmatter's very own Zapata, amongst stunningly emotion-rich vocals. On the flip, you'll find a fine instrumental version featuring dubbier production and more of Howard Wazeerud-Din II's mesmerizing trumpet solos, as well as Alston's "Rebirth 2 Mix" of deep, dreamy and impeccably soulful shuffler "Love Changes". All in all, a seductive deep house triumph.

Her new Fundamentals EP is the first release under the Analog Tara moniker in 15 years, delivering funky techno crafted from analogue sound sources. From moments of warm and emotive hi-tech soul like "Percolation" and "Propulsion" or the immersive minimal techno journey "Density & Surface" - here's a bunch of intelligent grooves suitable for a variety of occasions in the club. She earned a BA in American Civilization from Brown University and an MFA in Electronic Music from Mills College and was a visiting Professor of Sound at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

  1. Form Of Change
  2. A Mental Image
Review: Charles Noel has been enjoying a resurgence of late, with his early explorations as Archetype resurfacing on a number of reissue labels. Future Primitive have tapped Noel up for two cuts that typify his left-of-centre approach, leading in with the sharp-edged beat excursion "Form Of Change" that will appeal to all lovers of reduced, off-kilter rhythm workouts. "A Mental Image" adopts a softer stance, laying out a bed of silken pads and errant tweaks that tap into the head-tripping mood of vintage techno while maintaining the future-minded thrust that makes true machine music timeless, whichever era it was crafted in.

  4. Downstreamed (Mount Liberation Unlimited Ethereal Teen Dream version) (6:57)
Review: Last year, Art Alfie finally went solo after spending the first portion of his career collaborating with fellow Stockholm resident Mr Tophat. This EP for Toy Tonics follows hot on the heels of last year's debut album on Studio Barnhus and a widely acclaimed studio hook-up with Cassy. Our pick of the bunch is woozy and soft-focus opener "Downstreamed", where lilting synthesizer melodies and slowly shifting chords sashay in and out of a drowsy and dub-flecked slow motion rhythm track. Fellow Swedes Mount Liberation Unlimited provide their own "Ethereal Teen Dream" version, which craftily re-imagines Art Alfie's original as a defiantly dubby blend of Scandolearic bliss and hypnotic deep house. Also worth checking is the bounding dub disco/deep house fusion of "Bondkatten".

Cat: LT 060. Rel: 06 Sep 18
  1. The Rainbow Song (7:18)
  2. The Rainbow Song (S3A Broken SSL remix) (5:40)
Review: Following a surprise outing on House of Disco, Ludovic Llorca returns to Local Talk for the first time since 2013's much played The Same Thing EP. In its' original form, The Rainbow Song is a near perfect example of Llorca's particular brand of deep house - all stretched-out chords, a bustling bassline, tough but shuffling beats, cute cowbells and bluesy vocal samples. It sounds like an underground summer anthem in waiting. There's more of a funk-flecked urgency about the excellent S3A Broken STL Remix, which introduces further vocal samples and, arguably, an even more addictive groove. Certainly, it feels a little wilder than the original, whilst retaining Llorca's unique deep house perspective.

Flowers EP (12" 再出版)
Cat: SS 048. Rel: 08 Sep 18
  1. Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
  2. Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
  3. Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

  1. Cookie Monster (10:16)
  2. What Do We Do (8:57)
Review: Alex Attias seems to have found a soul mate in Luman Child AKA Pascal Strauss, a talented musician whose rubbery basslines and jammed-out electric piano lines feature prominently on both "Cookie Monster" and "What Do We Do". While many will be drawn towards the eyes-closed soul chorus vocals and elastic deep house swing of the latter, it's the jaunty, party-ready A-side that's arguably the strongest dancefloor workout. Similar in ethos to the Herbie Hancock/jazz-funk-influenced work of Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black project, the track is arguably one of the strongest of Attias's long career.

If you've spent so much as five minutes on their platform, you'll know the vibes on offer here; deep dreamy house laced with cosmic textures, rippling soul and a strong sense of timelessness. From the big vocal salvo of Bellaire's "Oh" right through to the final dubby echoes of Jesse Bru's "Setup", this is exactly the high level of launch release you'd expect from such a respected platform. Houseum is a feeling. A good feeling.

  1. Implacable Force (6:49)

  4. Sands Of Time (6:27)
Review: Rob Belleville is a producer from the Netherlands. His music can be found in the same space as producers such as Arne Weinberg, Microworld, Sean Deason and Drivetrain. He is know for moving between ambient electronica and atmospheric techno sounds, always warm and well produced. This release is no different, as here we have two very special tracks with the same integrity as anything Rob has written in the past. On the A side we've got 'Implacable Force' which features a driving techno foundation and washy synths, interwoven for perfect headspace. The second track in is Sungazing, which takes you into a more lazy groove with swirling, warm pads and more good drum programming. The B side features Rise 'n Shine and Sands of Time, both blurring the line between deep house and techno, with a fine balance between the melodic textures and tech house percussion. If you like atmospheric, melodic textures and quality music in general, this one is for you.

Soaring 303 acid lines create bigtime euphoria on jams like "QUIEN" (alternate version), moody electro in the vein of Dopplereffekt can also be heard on "Galope 034" but really finds his comfort zone on the bittersweet melancholia of "Identification Continua" or the hazy trip-hop vibe of "Aqui Es".

Review: Happily, Magic Feet man Craig Bratley is on fine form on this surprise Futureboogie Recordings outing, which we think includes some of his strongest material for some time. Check, for example, throbbing opener "99.9", a body-jacking, Italo-influenced throb-fest that wraps '70s horror soundtrack synthesizer melodies and foreboding riffs around a surging arpeggio bassline. Andrew Weatherall is on hand to remix, delivering a vastly different but rather brilliant interpretation that places exotic, snaking synthesizer melodies and yelping vocal samples over a Love From Outer Space-ready pitched-down groove. Elsewhere, "Italo Love" is an all or nothing tribute to the glory days of Italo-disco and "Take Me To Bedford Or Lose Me Forever" is a top-drawer chunk of intoxicating slo-mo synth-chug.

Review: Jesse Bru's career seemed to spring into life in 2017, helped in no small part by a quintet of hugely impressive releases. He's been pretty quiet so far this year, though Ships In The Night is up there with his strongest previous releases. There's a wonderfully bouncy and rubbery feel about opener "Ships In The Night (017 Rework)", a sample-heavy deep house workout laden with bluesy horns, dreamy flourishes and meandering spoken word vocal snippets, while "In Orbit" smothers a locked-in kick-drum beat with spacey, delay-laden synths and drifting electric piano chords. Also worth checking is "The Promise of Things To Come", a fine fusion of ambient electronics and bustling, layered deep house drums, and the jazzy-but-driving flex of EP closer "Dawn".

  3. Flause
Review: For Those That Knoe continues in its quest to shine a light on criminally overlooked gems from the vast archives of house and techno, this time looking to the early 00s era of minimal house and the little known Swiss producer Canson. Using crisp, clicky rhythms as a backbone and embellishing the tracks with gorgeous bluesy synth touches, this is classy, understated stuff for the warm up or trip out crowd. "Newton" lets the chords linger around a robotic gurgle of percussion, while "Lachgras" takes a slinkier route into nocturnal keys clipped for maximum minimalisation. "Flause" edges towards dubbier territory with its subtly shifting tones, but the slinky house groove remains a constant as it ticks away underneath the shimmering textures.

  4. 11th Chamber (6:41)
Review: A double dose of debut action here, as Chicagodeep delivers his first solo EP on freshly minted Mexican label Short Attention Records. The action begins with title track "Flying Waltz", a pleasantly fuzzy and surprisingly spacey affair rich in jacking machine drums, jammed-out Clavinet style synth parts and deep space electronic melodies. The vintage deep house dreaminess of "Control Substance" follows, before Chicagodeep flips the script completely on the formidably sweaty, full-throttle acid house/deep house fusion of EP highlight "Sofia's Rage". To round things off, the Mexican producer doffs his cap to the early days of Larry Heard's career on the poignant, '86 style Chi-town deep house clatter of "11th Chamber".

  1. Like This (House mix) (5:16)
  2. Like This (DDD dub) (4:48)
Review: For the latest volume in their Foundations series on BBE, Kai Alce and DJ Spinna have decided to reissue one of the finest records from the earliest days of Chicago house, Chip-E's spellbinding 1985 anthem "Like This". This seven-inch edition features a fresh edit of Chip-E's original cub mix on the A-side. This version is essential largely because of the quality of K-Joy's impeccable vocal, though the re-mastered sound also makes Chip-E's crunchy Roland drum machine hits, bold synth-bass and spacey lead lines sound better than ever. Turn to the flip for the heavy and stripped-back "DDD Dub" version, which makes more use of the short "Like This" vocal, which was originally provided by the Godfather of House himself, Frankie Knuckles.

Review: Fuss-free London producer Chocky has graced some mighty fine labels over the years, including City Fly, Secret Reels, Dessous, Disconnected and, most recently, Flumo. Here the low-key deep house mainstay inaugurates a new label, Shhhhhhh.co, in the process serving up his first release of 2018. The headline attraction is "Chakattack", a deep, melodious and soul-flecked trip through Chaka Khan samples that come in two distinctive flavours. There's the smooth, dreamy and slightly spacey deep house vibes of the "House Mix" and the enveloping, off-kilter shuffle of the arguably superior "Broken Mix". Further deep house sensuality is provided on the flip, where "Dans La Chambre" does the horizontal mambo with bongo-laden beats, sub-heavy bass and some seriously seductive chords.

Review: Albrecht LaRooy's Analogue Attic imprint out of Melbourne, Australia has been a home for their own output as well as fellow Aussie artists like Sleep D, Rings Around Saturn and more. Here they present the inaugural EP from homeboy Adam McCoy aka Citizen Maze - and it's a great debut if we do say so ourselves. From the deep hypnotic techno of opener "Moonlight Sanctuary" which reaches near tribal moments in slow motion, the sensual and dubbed-out mood lighting of "Serenity In The Woods" (for those more introspective moments on the dancefloor) and B side cut "Glade Hollow" which goes for more of a celestial and balearic vibe - complete with one super sexy saxophone solo.

Review: If the name Timothy Clerkin sounds familiar, that's because you've heard his moody and neon-lit night moves as Heretic or Eskimo Twins across labels like Beachcoma, Nein Records and Days Of Being Wild over the years. This will be his second appearance under his birth name for London website via record label Ransom Note and as you'd expect - it is jam packed full of suave electro-noir antics. From the seductive slow burners like "Knife Edge Heart (feat Natalie Reiss) or "With You" to powerful dancefloor weapons like "Divisive" which see Clerkin join the dots between classic Italo and EBM, like he always does so well. On the flip, Factory Floor drummer Gabe Gurnsey delivers a tripped-out deconstruction of "Knife Edge Heart" which is equally worthy of your attention as the original.

  4. Play This One In Toronto (6:35)
Review: Last spotted on Second Hand Fun in 2016, young Montreal producer Comfort Zone returns with his first serious debut 12" and it's a beautiful game of two halves; Both versions of "Moonrocks" flex and wriggle with a hazy late 90s / early 2000s Freerangey / Jimpster type of dreaminess while all-out breakbeat jungle rollers "I Want U" and "Play This One In Toronto" show a whole other side to the young man. No time for sitting around and getting comfy on these ones...
