Body Mind Spirit EP
Cat: JMEP 023. Rel: 06 May 21
  1. Meditation #1-2 (1:36)
  2. Body Mind Spirit (feat Dumama) (7:05)
  3. Saturn Return (6:37)
  4. Elevation #1-2 (2:51)
  5. Phoenix Rising (5:07)
  6. Nuit Des To'eres (8:18)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

  3. Back To Tha Underground (5:35)
  4. 2 Black, 2 Strong (feat Hakim Green) (3:51)
Review: The Burrell Brothers (Rhano & Rheji) were by far the most prolific artists to release on seminal New York City imprint Nu Groove. Since Defected acquired the label's back catalogue, a new era brings new material by the pair for the first time in almost three decades - the latest arriving in the form of 'A.B.T. 2 (A Burrell Thang). It's that unmistakable sound of Stateside house music from the early '90s all over again as heard on 'Cut A Rug', wth a sound that many young producers of today try so hard to replicate. On the flip, we've got the druggy basement jam 'Back To Tha Underground' which is perfect afterhours tackle, as well as '2 Black, 2 Strong' (feat Hakim Green) and the famous "it's time for the percolator" vocal sample.

Signal EP (12")
Cat: MIDA 02. Rel: 13 Apr 21
  1. Signal (5:46)
  2. Swim (5:46)
  3. Lock (3:27)
Review: Tallin's MIDA already got those in the know talking with its first EP, and now they come through with more interesting sounds. Ajukaja & Ats is a production duo form the same city and they have a swirling, synth heavy sound that traps your head amongst the stars. The drum breaks on 'Signal' are deft, sleeping you afloat next to a tight bass riff and those well sequenced synths. 'Swim' is all squelchy sounds, bright daubs and alien lifeforms over more busted beats and 'Lock' heads off on a cosmic adventure with jittery modulations, distorted and crunchy drums and smeared pads that bring a sense of serenity.

  3. Cosmos (Telephones Subspace remix) (7:20)
  4. Cosmos (Beatless) (3:41)
Review: After All Is Well visited his friend Martin Iveson in his UK studio, the pair had lay down a few killer cuts, but the most standout of the lot was this one, which is sort of what it might sound like if Jean-Michel Jarre did Norwegian Cosmic disco. It's defined by the Korg Monopoly's weird paraphony and is rhythmically sustained by the Arp 2600 Bass line. Who else to remix but the legendary Prins Thomas, who layers in deep, funky bass, then Telephones explore the edges of the cosmos with a Subspace mix before a beatless version is also included.

Cat: ASC X. Rel: 05 May 21
  1. Back In Black (7:28)
Review: Master minimalist Thomas Melcior is back with a new release on his Aspect Music imprint under the alias Back In Black. Although this is only a single sided release, there's all you need right here. The eponymous release features all the hallmarks of Melchior's singular sound: from its rich tapestry of ethereal - almost arcane- tapestry of elements reaching near spiritual moments, underpinned by meditative and clipped rhythm programming. Be prepared for yet another altogether magickal experience from the legend.

  1. Slippers All Summer (6:28)
  2. Fascinating (6:14)
  3. Jaffa (6:57)
  4. More Than Micro (5:55)
Review: In case you need bringing pop to speed, Locus is a brand new record label from the same vital team behind FUSE London. The sounds are a little quicker than those on the main label, with a future feel, electronic funk and cool to spare. Josh Baker takes the reins this time with the glossy vocal tech of 'Slippers All Summer' complete with nice cosmic pads. 'Fascinating' is a more jittery groove that tease and please with razor sharp hi hats and daubs of synth, then 'Jaffa' picks up the pace with acid bass, rave whistles and scintillating drum work. 'More Than Micro' closes on a nice heads down deep house vibe for the calming and late night hours.

  2. Ban Ban Eya (Joaquin Joe Claussell Cosmic Arts dubness) (8:49)
  3. The Healers (LP version) (4:03)
Review: Sacred Rhythm head honcho Joe Claussell must be one of the most relentless artists out there. Each new weekly seemingly brings more of his spiritually intense reworks and this time out he is doing his thang to two tracks by The Bayaya Citizens. His take on 'The Mofocongoietric' is arresting thanks to its taught synths and off-grid keys all colouring in a prickly, percussive groove. 'Ban Ban Eya' (Joaquin Joe Claussell Cosmic Arts dubness) is just as intense and busy with those rapturous synths extending up the heavens and last of all original tune 'The Healers' brings some afro grooves to the EP.

Review: Since launching in early 2020, archival techno specialists Back to Life has reissued some genuine gems from the likes of Ron Trent and Chez Damier, Bam Bam, G-Man and Leo Anibaldi. Their latest missive comes courtesy of the effervescent John Beltran and his lesser-known Nostalgic project. What we get is fully remastered versions of a trio of tracks from 2006's Going Home EP. On the A-side you'll find the original EP's standout cut, 'Placid Angles', a deliciously dreamy chunk of house-tempo Motor City techno rich in undulating analogue bass, sunny chords and intergalactic melodies. It's backed on side B by short IDM number 'Detroit Movements' and 'Going Home', a superbly emotive, atmospheric and immersive sci-fi techno number that's as blissful and positive as they come.

Review: Seriously authentic vibe son this one from Billy Lo, which is a trio of artists from Detroit's Motor City. Bill Beaver is a Sound Signature and Mahogany Music alumnus, Darren Abrams wrote the classic 'Loose Piano' on Third Ear Recordings and Darryl Tis is the third piece of the puzzle. This EP features a repress of 'Its The Life,' a forgotten classic from the D that first came in 2002 and now costs a small fortune on Discogs. As well as the original, NDATL's front man Kai Alce remixes and two additional jazzy tinged, deep house gems are also included on this gold standard EP.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan's Bluetrain alias is one of the most revered in techno. Its output spans multiple decades and the quality level has always remain high. It is a project the serves up precision minimal sounds, steeped in dub history and always designed for dance floor hypnosis. 'Relacion Especial' is one of the more playful cuts he has produced, with a catchy trumpet riff layer over silky drums and whimsical chords. With his remix, German wizard Move D blisses it out to make for a perfect early evening house jam, while Joaquin Lledo ups the pressure and brings sun worshipping synths to the fore. A tidy package indeed.

  2. All I Want (extended NRG remix) (7:06)
  3. All I Want (Purple Disco Machine remix) (8:08)
  4. All I Want (DJ Tennis remix) (7:16)
Review: Boys Noize and Defected seem like rather odd bedfellows on paper. The former is known for making caustic, in your face club tracks that are aggressive and heavily textured. The latter is one of house music's most smooth and feel good labels. Yet with 'All I Want (feat Jake Shears)' they somehow find a sweet spot between the two. The tune has gauzy chord vamps and and a rigid beat, but the vocal is catchy and smooth, while the bass sequence is sure to lock in any crowd. The remixes take in star-gazing, upbeat disco house funk and dub, stripped back and trance inducing minimalism from DJ Tennis.

  4. Scott Hallam - "Modern Senses" (7:03)
Review: Reflections Of Yesterday is a new label 'with an eye on the future and a subtle nod to the past.' For its inaugural release, they have tapped two current heroes of the techno scene to present on each side of Reflection 1. Leeds' Al Bradley of 3AM Recordings is in fine form here, with the deep, down and dirty afterhours bounce of 'Pale Blue Dot' followed by the old school acid house swagger of 'In Flagrente Delicto'. On the flip are two more tracks, this time by Mancunian Scott Hallam of Axia Records who presents another serving of irresistible 303 wiggle on the glorious 'Kettle Crusader' followed by the high tech soul of 'Modern Senses' and its respectful nod to The Motor City.

Review: The next Shall Not Fade release comes from Berlin-based Marc Brauner, he of label and popular Youtube channel Houseum. He serves up some more old school deep house flavors you've come to expect on the Rarities EP, jam packed with half a dozen late night expressions in mood music. From the early '90s Chicago bounce of 'Too Real', to the bright like neon tech house of 'Things I Did' - it's clear that there's a wide variety of moods and grooves on here. Over on the flip, 'I Knew You Would' is a heartfelt affair for those saucer eyed moments under the strobe lights, while 'Neptun' respectfully takes its cues from that timeless F- Communications vibe of old. He's got a wide range of sounds in his arsenal and is a perfect fit for the raw, MPC loving Apron label run by Funkineven, which is where lands now. This fulsome EP takes you on a jazz tinged house trip to the edges of the galaxy with far-sighted chords and reflective moods one minute and noodling, funk laced beat pieces the next. It's as high in quality as it is timeless.

Review: Calou hails from Bern, Switzerland and brings plenty of refreshingly air vibes to these new tunes for Straight Ahead Music. 'Amnesia House' is catchy and melodic, with nice crisp drums and shiny pads bringing uplifting feels. 'Miami Heat' is a more physical house jam with leggy drums and soulful vocal coos and 'Borderland' then picks up the pace to glide along on a nice bassy groove that has yawning pads and a grand scale. Proving he has plenty of different tricks up his sleeve, closer 'Going Up' offers yet another interesting take on house music, as this time the melodies get more sci-fi and late night.

Review: Joseph Caserta specialises in reworking little known soul and disco gems into brand new weapons. He does so on his own label as well Bridge Boots, with a couple lined up for the next few weeks. The first is this one, which features two version of '(M)', starting with the Baby Maker dub. It's a slinky bit of squelchy dub disco funk with lively perc and pixelated pads. Picking things up and taking them out of the bedroom and onto the dance floor is a 909 Mix with more upright drums and a fat bassline.

  1. Climax 1 (6:16)
  2. Climax 2 (6:19)
  3. Track 1 (6:57)
  4. Track 2 (5:52)
Review: Kerri Chandler has made a lot of terrific records over the years, but few are better than 1993's "Atmosphere EP", which in our opinion contains some of the most on-point "garage-house" (as it would have been called then) ever made. This yellow vinyl reissue proves our point: you'll struggle to find a more infectious fusion of New Jersey organ stabs, sparkling piano riffs and bumpin' club grooves than "Climax 1", or the tougher dub mix "Climax 2" for that matter (a revision made all the more alluring by Chandler's use of heady African vocal samples). The goodness continues on the flip, where the jazzy and immersive deep house warmth of "Track 1" is quickly followed by the Larry Heard-inspired brilliance of "Track 2" - a kind of tribute to "Can You Feel It" that features some dizzying piano solos from the hugely talented Chandler. In a word: essential.

Review: Another new week means another selection from Joe Claussell's impossibly steamy and intense reworks. The super limited Manifestations: Long Versions EP 2 collects another three such tunes on one coloured vinyl. First is a dreamy and sun kissed tune from Mental Remedy that is all breathy vocals and noodling solos, then The Bayara Citizens offer a high speed salsa dance that transports you to the south of the Med and beyond. Another one from Mental Remedy cloys out with more afro rhythms and organic, wooden percussive sounds.

Review: . NYC outfit Conclave are an interesting proposition. Described as "live musical assembly of rotating musicians headed by multi-instrumentalist Cesar Toribio", the outfit makes music rooted by all aspects of Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean musical culture. Their second single, Perdon, offers a taste of their forthcoming debut album. The track itself is a bouncy, floor-friendly jazz-funk treat full of intricate instrument solos and spacey synth sounds, but if anything, the accompanying Louie Vega remixes are even better. The Masters At Work Man first transforms the track into an authentic Latin house shuffler (the 'Louie Vega Remix'), before taking a deeper and more driving direction on the more electronic Expansions NYC Dub. Rounding things off is a tidy instrumental version of Vega's main mix.

Review: Dennis Cruz and Josh Butler are two of modern house music's most hit making artists. Their contemporary European sound now takes them to Crosstown Rebels for 'Ahora Todo Va,' a festival-ready anthem if ever we heard one. It has a summery, tribal, percussive sound that makes sense outdoors under the sun, with Latin vocals and a shuffling beat that is easy to lock into. Gorgon City remix it into a more twisted and tense tune that builds the energy levels through big synths and epic breakdowns. Both are likely to be all over the place as soon as dance music is unleashed in June.

There's a militant urgency to these tracks, which lean in hard on the drums and fill out the space in between with wriggling, writhing threads of electronic interference. If you're after melodic hooks look elsewhere, this is raw, tracky tackle for the heads down, all-night crowd.

  1. Life (7:16)
  2. Time (6:09)
Review: The opening salvo on DailySessions's new one for their own label manages to be both musically deep and subtle, as well as widely appealing thanks to the iconic vocal sample. It's left to soar over late night chords and nice organic beats that are filled with jazz cool and lounge lushness. On the flip is 'Time' which has possibly and even more famous vocal. This one gets a slightly punchier groove to carry it along, with all manner of Balearic guitar riffs layered in. Both are guaranteed fun-time floor fliers.

Gabriel (reissue) (limited white vinyl 12" 再出版)
Cat: LARV 019WHITE. Rel: 18 Mar 21
  1. Gabriel (The Scroll mix) (6:59)
  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

Cat: MINERAL 01. Rel: 10 May 21
  1. Deep System - "Radarscope" (6:39)
  2. Morose - "Holy Ghost" (8:02)
Review: Morose is an Italian DJ and producer now based in London, and Deep System is an unknown artist who had only two EPs out in the mid 90s.. Now they are reunited on the newly minted Mineral label as two of their choice cuts get welcome reissues. Deep System's 'Radarscope' has aged perfectly well. It's a turbocharged bit of electronic funk with elements of OG tech house, trance-y keys and warm house basslines. Drop this one and watch the floor go up a notch. Morose's 'Holy Ghost' is a speedy bit of deep house with a cosmic atmosphere and scraping hits that keep your head nodding for the duration. Super stuff.

  1. Adam Rock Dissed!! (4:38)
  2. Moths In Wallets (feat Mr Mensah) (5:07)
  3. Backchat For Toprock (5:18)
Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

  1. Cubbe (5:48)
  2. Everybody (5:05)
  3. He Was Out (6:43)
Review: Hot Creations' moment in the sun has long been over but the label has done a fine job of evolving into something new and fresh - that is a house label still, but one with a more edgy and less predictable sound. That's exemplified perfectly here by assumed newcomer Disaia, who offers up some full fat sounds. Opener 'Cubbe' is all modulated bass sounds and bumping kicks that keep you guessing as they never resolve, and 'Everybody' then slips into a more slinky tech house vibe that is quick and infectious. Last of all, 'He Was Out' is a booming late night cut filled with raw drum power.
