Review: Since arriving in Bristol a couple of years back, Hull-born occasional Manc Sam Baobinga has been on a musical voyage of discovery. Joint Ventures - a collaborative album featuring contributions from leading West Country knob-twiddlers (Ginz, Hyetal, Guido, regular sparring partner ID), up-and-coming stars (Kowton, Gemmy) and pals from further afield (XXXY, Geiom) - charts that journey. Considering the all-star cast and musically eclectic nature of the project (slow house, future garage, wonky, post-dubstep, glistening electronica, even skittering drum and bass), Joint Ventures could have been a mess. Yet it holds together exceptionally well, coming on like a kaleidoscopic sprint through contemporary bass music's many varied strands.

Review: Aside from sporting the finest, bushiest beard in dance music, Ralph "Bass Clef" Cumbers has long been a producer with more ideas than most. Just as capable of making thrilling, bass-heavy floor fillers as quirky dubstep and oddball electronica, he's made a career out of surprising listeners at every turn. This latest album - his first for Peverelist's Punch Drunk imprint - is a good case in point. Having seemingly tired of straight-up dubstep and bass music (for now, at least), Cumbers turns his attention to linear electronics, classic Detroit techno and stargazing electronica, laying down a series of delightfully melodic compositions that arguably rank among his best to date. The album's forthright positivity is its most startling feature; clearly, "Clef" is in a good place right now.

Review: Benga's 'Diary Of An Afro Warrior' is one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year. If Burial's 'Untrue' dominated
2007's end of year critics charts then it's odds on this one will do the same in 2008.
'Night', the underground smash single lifted from the album has literally had ravers from countless club
scenes, DJs and grandparents whistling and humming its infectious melody for months now.
In addition to becoming the first dubstep record to be play listed on BBC Radio 1, 'Night' represented
Benga's tipping point for many DJ's and music lovers across the globe, including Gilles Peterson,
Ricardo Villalobos, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Herve, Shy FX and many others regardless of genre.
Benga is undoubtedly the force to smash it through and take dubstep to another level.

Review: The inhabitants of Swansea have a lot to shout about these days. Not only is their football team riding high in the Premier League, but the city also boasts the originators of a sound dubbed "deep rave" - a suitably warm, muted fusion of old skool rave influences, deep house, UK funky, tropical and murky Berlin techno. Here, said pioneers - hometown heroes Benjamin Damage and Doc Daneeka - deliver their debut album for the mighty 50 Weapons imprint. They Live! is a suitably deep and lovable collection of bass music given their distinctive twist, with extra warmth provided by vocalist Abigail Wyles. Deeper, headphone-friendly moments ("Halo", "Juggernaut", "Battleships") are offset by a string of robust, peaktime bombs, not least a fine version of scene anthem "Creeper" and the eye-popping "Deaf Siren".

  12. Sam Binga & Om Unit - "Reclaim"
  13. Greatest Distance (feat Romaine)
  14. Steppin VIP (feat Chimpo/Fox/Redders)
Review: Sam 'Binga' Simpson has always been a keen collaborator. In fact, his debut solo album - released under his previous Baobinga alias back in 2011 - was entitled Joint Ventures, and was entirely made up of co-productions. Wasted Days, the belated follow-up, is similarly minded, with the Bristol-based Hull exile being joined by an impressive roster of guest vocalists - Slick Don, TT The Artist, Rider Shafique and Warrior Queen amongst them - with old pals Om Unit and Chimpo also lending a hand. Impressive as it is, the genius of Wasted Days is in its' unique blend of bass music influences, with Simpson impressively fusing classic jungle, experimental D&B, footwork, ragga, dancehall, grime, IDM, smack-house and dubstep to create thrilling new hybrid workouts.

Review: James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there is only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: James Blake's Mercury Prize-nominated debut set gets a reboot, this time with a second CD featuring the six tracks that make up his new EP Enough Thunder. Since these tracks sound like a logical extension of the original album - and were, presumably, recorded around the same time - they're a neat fit. Of these new tracks, there's a mix of delay-laden piano ballads ("Enough Thunder", "A Case Of You") and typically maudlin bass music experiments ("Not Long Now", "We Might Feel Unsound"). There's also a strange but rather endearing collaboration with Bon Ivor, "Fall Creek Boys Choir", that features plenty of Blake's now trademark voice manipulation.

Review: St Petersburg producer BOP initially impressed a couple of years back with a debut album for Hospital offshoot Med School that blurred the boundaries between drum and bass, IDM and electronica. This sophomore effort continues that journey into experimentalism, impressing from start to finish with its mournful melodies, skittering beats and dream-like atmospheres. Like other junglists who have trodden this path - Instra:Mental and D:Bridge being great examples - BOP refuses to be chained to one style or tempo. So while there are D&B-influenced beats - particularly on the ludicrously titled "Extraterrestrial Creatures Are Stealing You From Me" and the excellent "Intercontinental Meltdown" - they often come wrapped in a sea of all-enveloping chords, ambient textures and heady electronics.

Review: Considering he's been releasing records for the likes of Planet Mu and Apple Pips since 2009, it would be something of an understatement to say that Brackles' debut album has been a long time coming - but it couldn't have been better timed. Although his sound - a rough hybrid of UK garage and funky styles with echoes of dubstep - is very much of the now, there's an obvious love for the classic sounds of 90s UKG which many of his more inexperienced contemporaries lack - assisted by the inspired vocal contributions from Lily McKenzie and Terri Walker. But it's not just a throwback record - be it the slightly offbeat bass and calypso vibe of "Walkin' Out" or the churning subs of "Squarehead", Brackles nevertheless manages to twist the template into weird and unique shapes. That this album has been released on Rinse isn't a surprise - he's encapsulated nearly twenty years of the station's sound into one record.

Review: It's been some six years since renowned misery guys Kevin Martin won plaudits for London Zoo, a typically dark, intense and aggressive full-length that showcased his unique ability to blend dubstep, grime, dancehall and dub techno textures into nightmarish new shapes. Angels & Devils, his belated follow-up, is intriguingly different. While the second half of the set is blessed with plenty of robust, floor-friendly riddims (each blessed with vocals from a range of impressive collaborators), the first half is an altogether more downbeat affair. In fact, it's these moments - the droning, dub-inflected ambience of "Pandi" and the bluesy, soundscape dub-soul of "Save Me" - that hit home hardest.

Review: If this heavy-hitting collection of previously unreleased cuts was meant as a kind of Ed Banger relaunch, it more than achieves its stated aim. Curated and mixed together by label bosses Busy P and DJ Mehdi, Let The Children Techno! is a joyous romp through rainbow-coloured dancefloor pastures. From start to finish, it exudes a smiley confidence that's truly infectious. With established names queuing up to offer bold, brash and occasionally brilliant contributions, it's packed with quality gear. From the disco-flecked dubstep-pop of Skream's "Boat Party" and hip-hop bounce of Busy P's "Procrastinator" to the shimmering beauty of Flying Lotus, bowel-bothering thump of Riton and tongue-in-cheek electro-funk of Breakbot, it oozes fun from start to finish.
